So, my husband and i were told this is the bar to go to if we are in the city and want good food at a good price.
the breakfast is amazing and so is the chicken wings. the food has been fresh and timely.
However, the service was less than fantastic... (at night).
Not sure who the 'big' girl behind the bar is?- and she may be the server and or owner? but she has a big attitude problem as well.
On many occasions, we have been there when she is working and the bar is empty so one would assume she would pay extra attention to the few people in her bar. This is NOT the case though. She always appears to be in a negative mood and is complaining to (a friend?) at the bar...
She has never made us feel comfortable nor ever gave us her name and she has seen us more than one occasion.
We love the breakfast when Cindy is working so we assumed the night staff would be more inviting. ?!
At first it seemed odd to us the first night we went and the bar was empty.. However, upon our second and third etc time the bar remained empty and the larger sized girl with black hair has been the employee working. ...
I am hoping she is NOT the owner because she has very limited social skills and tends to be in a bad mood or complaining about working so much and/or complaining about other employees.
Needless to say,
As much as my husband and i love the food served after breakfast wr have decided to only frequent kickers during breakfast hours when we know that Cindy or the girl on Sunday is working..
It is unfortunate to have such a negative employee working night shifts especially when the bar appears to be empty.
Perhaps making her customers feel welcomed and not cleaning up and preparing to clean in order to close at 10pm. Â (which made us feel uncomfortable because we had not received of wings yet)
... It is NO SURPRISE the place is empty the times we have been there when this girl is working....
good luck keeping customers with her attitude.
All everyone  has said is true. Best kept secret that I hope gets out. I like it so much I now bartend/wait one night a week just to be a part of it. Long before that I learned to try it out and eat here and the food is stellar. Have even made some new friends. LOVE IT. I say none of this because I work there one shift. I won't even mention the shift. Just check it out--you won't be disappointed.
Review Source:Why is this place not packed all the time?
I have no friggin idea but they should be!
Great food & cheap prices. Â This has become our go-to place for a late breakfast on Saturday or Sunday mornings.. You know those days- when you might need to recuperate a bit.. Kickers has exactly what you need!
The first time we went in we were greeted like old friends and I've met and talked with a few of the bartenders and the owner - nicest people ever!
Sooo.. anyway.. back to the food- they have a breakfast that has a ham steak that they've marinated in pineapple juice that is to die for. Â Did I mention that it is about 1/2" thick and comes with eggs, toast and all the fixin's on a very large plate for right around $6.95 (give or take - can't quite remember but it was CHeeeeP).
Everything we've had there has been delicious and gigantic and cheap.
They have more specials than I can even being to list. Â Daily specials and weekend specials.
Don't be scared off by the location - it's fine.... really it is. Â Would I lie to you?
You should get there now!
This place is such a dive, I thought the menu was a joke. It wasn't. I was in the mood for something "lighter," so I opted for a turkey club. A short time later, a sandwich with 6 HUGE strips of bacon and an entire package of deli turkey arrived at my table. The lettuce and tomatoes were fresh (I was as shocked as anyone) and the fries are actually huge slices of real potato fried to a flavor level I can only describe as grease...and I mean that as a compliment. The service staff was literally one person (bartender and waitress extraordinaire), but she did a great job.
Not the best club and fries I've ever had, but certainly the biggest and quite possibly also the cheapest, which is hilarious. Almost as hilarious as the fact that a place this run-down and dirty has the balls to serve food...especially good food.
When I had a craving for the apparently elusive "dirty" style chicken wings, a friend of mine told me I should try Kicker's. Â I was starving when I finally got there and of course disappointed when I didn't see the wings I craved.
Nevertheless, the waitress who doubled as the bartender was very friendly, and the place was somewhat quiet. The menu had lots of great stuff and I noticed the prices weren't very expensive so my first thought was "this can't be good food".
The waitress told me the special of the 12" pizza and said that since they take a while since they are made to order, I might want to order an appetizer. I opted for the toasted ravioli. After what seemed a while and what started to bother me since my stomach was growling, the waitress came out to say they were out of the ravs since they were busy over the weekend. Ok, Potato skins would do.
About 15 minutes later, the waitress came out with a plate of the biggest most loaded with cheese and bacon potato skins I've ever had experienced! Provel, chedder and strips of crispy bacon all on what I believe was half a potato that still had meat on it rather than the run of the mill potato skin that is skinny and has  a blob of cheese and maybe a few sprinkles of artificial bacon if your lucky.
After about 2 and a half of these, I had to stop until my pizza arrived which just as I sat back to rest, here it came. I ordered a sausage and bacon and that's exactly what it had in abundance! The sauce was in my opinion just icing on the cake of a pizza that had big chunks of sausage, not the little balled up kind, and strips of bacon that was crisp and not just there, and a layer of provel cheese that was just a little burnt on top which was just fine with me. It had to weigh at least 5 pounds! And the thickness was almost comparable to a stuffed pizza.
Three pieces later, and in need of a wheel chair to leave, I asked for the check which I couldn't believe for the drinks, pizza and skins was surprising! For this quality of food I could have easily expected a $40.00 bill even with just two items and drinks. The food was amazing and I will definitely be back. And on a side note, even the leftovers heated in the microwave are delicious.
i don't understand the economics of this place--their prices are cheap, the portions huge, and the quality high for bar food. take their house salad--rather than a handful of iceberg sprinkled in provel and drowned in ranch--for three bucks you get a pile of mixed greens, chunks of tomato, cucumber, and carrots with a generous helping of shredded cheese. nobody would bat an eye to pay $7 in CWE or clayton for this salad. i get it every time, even though i know it will fill me up and i'll struggle to finish even half a sandwich. speaking of sandwiches, theirs are over the top--the breakfast club is actually two sandwiches--a ham, egg and cheese on top of a blt. the only reason it's not two sandwiches is they share that middle piece of bread. there is no real dignified way to eat it--it's too big to take a full bite. you just have to pick it up and eat the parts that bulge out until it's gone. you won't mind, and you'll need napkins.
this place ought to be packed all the time, but unfortunately their location in lovely industrial south broadway keeps them a (too) well-kept secret.
Kicker's is the place to be after 3 hours of hot, sweaty roller derby practice on Monday nights. Â We pile in around 10pm, hungry and thirsty for a cold beer.
Kicker's is your typical dive/neighborhood bar. Â Everyone who works there is really friendly and the few non-derby customers I've talked to have been great as well. Â Any bar that can put up with a huge rush of derby girls is golden in my book.
My favorite thing about Kicker's on a Monday night is their $2 fun beers! Â They have a big cooler full of different beers - Wheach, Blue Moon, Boulevard, PBR, Hardcore Cider, Blueberry something-or-other, there's something in there for everyone. Â I can spend a few hours there and walk away with an $8 tab. Â The food is also pretty decent for a "dive bar." Â The fried cauliflower is my favorite but they also make nachos, potato skins, pizza, wings, and a lot more.
I wouldn't come to Kicker's on an off-derby night because it's not too close to my house, but it serves it purpose on Monday nights.
Kicker's Corner has been an anchor in the Carondelet neighborhood for several years now and before that, was a great place to go to in the Patch neighborhood. Located right on the main strip of South Broadway near I-55 and Bates, Kicker's (as the locals call it) is an unpretentious bar and restaurant.
This unpretentiousness, however, disguises the fact that, from the moment you walk in the door, you're treated like an old friend from everyone there. Kicker's is open at 7 a.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays and 8 a.m. Sundays and Mondays with one of the best breakfasts on the South Side. The specialty is omelets, and they don't scrimp on the eggs and toppings. My favorite is a ham, bacon and cheese omelet with home fries washed down with a diet Coke.
The lunch and dinner specials are also excellent - in fact, there's a special most every day and night of the week, breakfast, lunch and dinner. The more popular specials are $5 cheese pizzas Tuesday nights (additional toppings are $1.25 each); $8 steaks with two sides (I generally get a salad and baked potato) on Wednesdays; gigantic (and when I say gigantic, I mean GIGANTIC!) pork steaks on weekend nights with one or two sides for $6.50; and $2 burgers Saturday afternoons. From 3-7 p.m. Fridays, Kicker's also has half-price appetizers (wings, cauliflower, mushrooms and toasted ravs).
For the fans, there's always soccer on at least one of the many TV screens located throughout the bar and dining room (Fox Soccer Channel is a favorite). The local teams also get played on a regular basis (especially Cardinals and Blues games), and behind the bar, there's TWO high-def TVs (you haven't seen any sports until you've seen them on HD!). There was always plenty of soccer talk during the recent FIFA World Cup in South Africa, and plenty of discussion among the regulars of what was going on throughout the tournament. When the local teams aren't playing, there's always a good assortment of music coming from the jukebox - everything from hard rock to classic alternative to traditional country to pop hits.
Besides the food, there's always cold beer waiting to be served, both on tap (the usual assortment of A-B products) and in the cooler. The specialty is always $2 "fun" beers. I'm not sure what they mean by "fun" beers, but you can see them in the cooler - things like Red Stripe, Stag and Pabst, for instance. There's also a good assortment of Schlafly beers and Guinness in cans. Besides the beers, there's also a full bar ready to make your favorite shot.
What really makes Kicker's special, though, is the out-and-out warmth and friendliness from the entire staff - Matt, Chris, Chrissy, Kristi, Chris, Sue, Rachel and Katie (and I'm sure there's one or two folks I've missed - my apologies for that). They're always there with a smile and a kind word for everyone who comes in. And the regulars there are equally fantastic people - I've made many a good friend there.
If you're looking for a South Side neighborhood place that's fun to be at and with good food at reasonable prices, you can't go wrong stopping into Kicker's Corner. Hours are 8 a.m-midnight Mondays, 7 a.m.-1:30 a.m. Tuesdays-Fridays, 8 a.m.-midnight Saturdays and 8 a.m.-11 p.m. Sundays. Stop on by and tell them I sent ya - you'll love it!!!
