I have been here recently with my cousin in law. Red Bull and Vodka was a flowin' and a punk rock band was a playin'. There was a $5 cover charge which I was not a fan of, but the bartenders were cool.
We actually sat outside on the patio. You can still hear the music and see the dancers at the windows. Oh, and no smoking. Only by the sidewalk on Hermosa Ave.
Walk over to the beach for some nice fresh air after a couple of drinks ;)

Life's a beach...

Awesome bar/lounge. I love the live reggae on Sundays! The crowd is mixed and everyone dances. A terrific vibe.

This place has done a great job of revamping itself over the last 6 months. The music, the drinks, the staff and the overall experience is really great now. If you like live music and the beach, this place is a perfect place to check out.

Domestic light beers on tap. Not much selection as far as bottles. Weak margaritas.
I didn't eat here so I can't comment on the food.

Came for happy hour jazz on Wednesday nights three times now. Fantastic musicians, cool cooky crowd, yummy beer and food. The food is half off until 8 PM, and much better than most of the surrounding joints. I want to make this a habit. Must try Sunday Jazz brunch soon. And, no cover charge!! This place is a classic in the South Bay and I'm glad it's here!

This place is super mellow. They often have a drink minimum on live music nights (which is almost every night) but the music is usually good, and so are the drinks. If you are looking for something low key, this place is never busy...

The downside of this place is its Hermosa beach prices. Which are high. Other than that its TERRIFIC. The bands are great. A terrific vibe. Reggae every week. We're talking South Bay bands that are the nest Dirtyheads, Slightlys, and Tommorows Bad Seeds of the world. This place is awesome. Right on the Peir. Fun Vibe times. No loud electronic music. Vibes mon, pure vibes.

Its one of the first bars I've ever set foot in when visiting LA. And I feel in love with the South Bay, and Los Angeles RIGHT AWAY! One of the types of places that makes me love Southern California. Plus to feel that is the pier Henry Rollins and Pennywise played right on this peir at one point give it that the NEXT big band could break outta here feel.

A good place to go if you like live music. There wasn't a cover, which was good for a Saturday night (at least there wasn't at 9pm, when we arrived). It was really loud inside with the band, so we opted to sit out on the patio so we could actually talk. When I went inside to use the bathroom a few times, it didn't seem like the place was very packed. It actually seemed kind of dead for a Saturday night on the pier. I had never been before, so not sure what it's usually like. Unfortunately there were no drink specials or anything, so I would say it was pretty average all around.

Never go here.

We came here for Sunday night karaoke because we felt so sorry for this pathetic bar. My friend tried to put on a legit performance to wake up that drowsy, lametastic crowd. He sang "Friends in Low Places" and unbuttoned his shirt about halfway down, for sex appeal. The insecure nancy boy running the karaoke, immediately became insecure. "No no no, you are ruining it for everyone!" he squawked, a panicked tear streamed down his face. Apparently this girly man was so shaken/aroused by the site of chest hair became confused and hysterical. We left shortly thereafter.

In summary, this bar is the Mark Sanchez of the Hermosa Pier. Sometimes people talk about it, no one actually believes it's any good, and it will be gone soon. I would call it a waste of space but it's so small that it would do injustice to that phrase.

Live jazz band + hearty brunch + Hermosa Beach Pier = a great way to start off your Sunday!

That's exactly what I did one Sunday thanks to a friend's invitation. She is a jazz aficionado and a singer as well!

The Lighthouse Cafe is one narrow room with the bar to the left, dance floor in the middle and stage to the right. Ample seats/tables are available at both ends of the dance floor and stage. The room is airy and lined with brick walls. The overall ambience is homey and cozy - like a friendly local joint :)

I did notice a rather older demographic that Sunday morning. It's too bad because I think younger people would have a great time munching on the oversized nachos, variety of meaty and cheesy omelets, burgers, fries, etc...

Actually, I've been here on a Friday night and there were older folks here as well haha I think it's safe to say that Lighthouse Cafe attracts a different (older) age bracket compared to all the other places on the pier like Sharkeez and American Junkie. It's not a bad thing; just an observation :)

Anyway, I had a great time brunching with friends over my veggie omelette while the CJS Quintet performed on stage!

http://www.yelp.com/user…

PARKING: There is a parking lot behind Lighthouse but it fills up by 11-11:30am on weekends. Also, there is a parking garage north of the pier right next to Starbucks. Sorry, I don't remember what the rate was.

Overall, don't come here expecting the type of crowd found at Sharkeez, American Junkie or Waterman's. However, do come if you're looking for a place with a live band.

TIP: I recommend checking out their calendar of events before heading over.

For me (and apparently others in my age group and some older) this is the place to go. I like hanging there in the evening when they have live rock bands. There's nothing like live music for the soul and some booty shaking =D

I like the atmosphere and crowd. Twice I went and they had the lights turned up all bright in the evening and I didn't like that. Don't know why it bothered me, but it kinda ruined the setting for me. Although it was much easier to see those two drunk girls who spilled their drink then slipped on it? IDK.....anyway, appetizers are huge and delicious. Staff is cool too until 1:30 when they start bootin' everyones drunk @sses out the door. It's always nice to take a little walk along the beach after closing time. You might even get lucky and see a few skinny dippers ;) Woo-hoo haha

BTW, parking can be a bitch in the summer. Don't forget your quarters for the meters, unless you park in the parking structure. In that case, note that there is more than one machine to swipe your card. Everyone huddles at the one up front while the back one has no line. You're welcome.

The lighthouse café is one of my new go to reggae spots on Sundays and Wednesdays... I think they also have reggae on Tuesdays but I know for a fact on Sundays from 4-8pm and Wednesdays starting at 9:30 pm. I'm so happy to have found a place that I enjoy, playing the music that I love.

My boyfriend and I went on a Wednesday and had a blast. I first off love Hermosa Beach, it's just a wonderful place haha everything is amazing down there. We were lucky enough to get a table when we went because it was pretty busy since they were filming a music video for a new upcoming reggae artist. We were hungry so we got some food, we got one of their nachos and that sucker was HUGE just a mountain of chips and cheese. Along with a lime grilled marinated chicken sandwich with fries. Both dishes were tasty, nothing to special but it did the trick... filled us up because we hungry and prevented any drunken disasters.

I got one of their specialty drinks a "Miles Davis" which is a large orange juice container, one of those that you get when you go to IHOP and order OJ for the whole fam of pineapple juice, rum and deliciousness with the longest straw ever. The straw is actually the size of my torso (I'm 5'1).

We'll most definitely be going back because bwoy I love me reggae!!!

I've been living in a bathing suit the past month, and most of that time has been in Hermosa, and the BEST of those times is Sunday Funday!

Lighthouse has live Reggae on Sundays and it's a really chill scene. There is nothing better than being able to walk into a place in just your bikini. Makes sense, since Lighthouse is 10 steps from the Strand/sand. It was helpful in the end, since we sweat sooo much grooving non-stop for like 2-3 hours straight! And everyone around you loves to groove too.

Greaaaaat music, we had a group of 10 people and there was lots of space to dance with a chicken strip in one hand and a Red Stripe in the other!

I think the only reasons this place is in business are: being on the beach and drunk patrons. The music I've heard there sucks. The ambiance doesn't fit the location of being steps away from the beach. Looks like everyone in there is high zoned out on bad music.

The service sucks on top of it! My friend and I walked in to get a bite to eat, we spoke to the waitress on the way in and sat down for 15 minutes...nothing. It wasn't even busy. We left.

This place is the spot to go to on Sunday afternoon. They have live jazz and never disappointing ones either.

They do sometimes have a cover charge depending on whose playing (one time it was 10 per person, so make sure you have cash just in case)
There is usually always seating. It has a tendency to get a little bit crowded, but it certainly doesn't stop the waitress from finding you and taking your order - get the Nachos (10 bucks i think)

The place is old and you can really see it when you look around, its a little on the darker side when you go inside, but it just adds to the charisma. I've never had a problem with any people there, staff and patrons alike. Very friendly vibe.

When you're done comping on your nachos and sipping on the vast selection of alcohol behind the bar (if you so choose), you can step outside and BOOM! Strand and Sand.

We stopped in here this past weekend on a whim, because there was what sounded like an awesome band playing.

And...ladies and gentlemen, there WAS an awesome band playing! I don't know what they were called, but they had the entire place groovin' and swayin' along to their infectious tunes.

Drinks were ordered, and served up fresh and cold promptly. They weren't fine martini's but rather bar fare. We didn't try the food but it looked delicious.

Make no mistake about it, this spot is unlike every other spot along the Pier - it's a dive. No frills. Strong, cold drinks. Good bands. You better believe I'll be back!

The drinks are pretty strong too! (from what I can remember ;oP )

Walking about Hermosa one day and saw this place.. one of the few that were less crowded than the others..okay mind made up - i was hungry and thirsty!

The live jazz permeated through the walls as I sat outside and enjoyed my Stella and the best chicken tenders I have eaten in such a long time! great selection of beer on tap the bar keeps were very friendly and the service was great

The waitress was amazing and took shots with the other patrons.. cool!

The seating is great only because the outside gives you the front and center circus of the people walking by.. oh yes there is and endless array of people watching here!

Let the parade begin!

I will be back and take those chicken strip around one more again!

Even with super amazing cover band, Mara & the Big Rockstars, Lighthouse is just another dive... granted a very decent dive that is right off the pier.

However, a beach locale and a door man doesn't make it any less of a dive--and that's A-OK by me!!

There's a good selection on draft and you can get the beloved PBR here--which is a definite PLUS. I've never cared for the food here so I can't say how it is.

The atmosphere is relaxed and the crowd is nice and friendly. I've met a lot of friends and friends of friends here and it has always been chill.

"Don't stop! Believin'!!!!!! Hold on to that FEEEEEEEELINGG!!" *high five to the random guy next to me*

I'm not rating The Lighthouse higher because to me, a lot of the positives are a result of Mara and not necessarily the venue... will return at a later time to check this joint out w/o the music.

---------------------------------------------------------

On a dark, eerie night while leaving The Lighthouse, our buzz was immediately killed.

As we approached the curbside to call a party-cab to take us home an evil lady approached me and my crew.

She rambled nonsense and I ignored her and tried not to make eye contact because I didn't want to turn to stone.

Our COOLNESS must have done something to piss her off... with an ominous glare, she lined us all up and machine-gunned us all down with a slew terrible adjectives.

-OLD (my friend who was half the age of the crazy lady)
-GAY (her husband who did not look gay)
-STUPID (my buddy and former college football player)
-UGLY (yours truly)

Eek... haha... it was SOOOO weird, and kinda reminds you that weird people like PBR, Journey and 80s Covers too... watch out for her if you go here!!!

A night spot that serves a hot dog with tater tots IN the bun is my kind of place.

I always find that I enjoy myself the most here when I'm in Hermosa. It's a great spot- the line usually isn't too bad and you can opt to sit at a table, eat, hang out, and enjoy the live music. Or, if you' re feeling lively, you can head inside and dance your heart out.

To me, it fits the relaxed beach vibe. A red stripe, live music, fried goodness and a tater tot hot dog? I'm goooooood.

What more could one ask for? The Lighthouse offers high energy, melodic blend of roots, dancehall, lover's rock and ska all in one place! It's guarenteed to inspire lots of dancing and vibing to anyone who walks through the door.A must for those who want to sip on their favorite drink and chill the hell out on a Sunday afternoon...

Detour is an amazing amazing band who I have seen at many different venues, but not quite like this. Here at the Lighthouse they are up close and personal...where else can you go listen to the band then get to sit and talk with them? Not too many places...Detour keep on jammin'!

Had a Sunday afternoon for beers at Hermosa Pier and the only bar left with patio seating was Lighthouse. They had some live jazz band playing inside, but still was pretty loud from the outside. When i finally went in to use the bathroom i realized why they were so loud, they had like a 20 piece band on stage!

Bud Light pints were $5.50/each ... ouch.

An extra star for having a jazz band in an area where Journey could be playing in every bar, at the exact same time.

I went last Friday, only because the Sharkeez line was too long. It looked like the best 2nd choice because of the live music and a $5 cover charge with no line. Unfortunately, the band that was playing that night had a bad choice of songs most of the night or maybe they just sucked. Though, they got better with each drink.

The crowd was older... the majority seemed to be in their 40's. The crowd was pretty diverse but not enough. I would recommend this spot to the mature crowd, at least on a Friday night. I still have to check out the other nights; they have some potential. I'm sure this place will get better as it warms up this summer.

This reggae band Detour ROCKS. They rock so bad they make girls want to take their clothes off and guys don't even notice. This band is so awesome, it's unbelievable. Seriously I'm not even kidding it's worth the trek and enduring the weekday late-20s crowd of happy hour-going bro-dawgs to check out this reggae band. The bar is TINY and most people sit outside until the band goes on, and then the joint fills up a bit more. There's lots of high tables and seating inside and out, and it never got so full that you had to wait for a drink or anything (we came on Wednesday night). Cool, nice bartenders and waitresses who will take tequila shots with you (say hello to Vinnie) if you don't want to drink alone.

We got there around 7:30 and caught the tail end of the happy hour (not a very good one, they only have like meatless nachos and peel-and-eat shrimp, wtf, for $5 and PBR on special but I can't remember how much - but it goes til 8 pm) and got a table outside. They turned the heaters on when the sun set.

I got the sliders, awesome concept: 1 mini burger with bacon and spicy mayo, one with mushrooms, one with guac and one with cheese. BUT they were really well-done and came with the multi-colored chips, instead of the expected fries. I thought they were OK for $8.75. My friend's nachos though, the ones not on happy hour special, were AWESOME. They had beans, big chunks of chicken, cheese, sour cream, olives, jalapenos, the works. Those were probably worth the $8.75. When we were done eating, we moved inside.

The people here are single and ready to mingle. There are groups of guys and groups of girls, and then a lot of guys by themselves. My drunk friend was dancing and causing a commotion so some guys decided to try hitting on me, sitting at the bar. But, they were really friendly and didn't seem too hostile when I politely nodded and smiled and clearly ignored their advances. Really friendly, chill people there to watch the reggae band. The dance floor started going around 9:45ish, about 100% girls. I wouldn't say this place is a club but more of a relaxed live music spot. At least on Wednesday nights.

I give 4 stars because the band is a 5, the beer selection is a 3 and the food is a 4.

This is a place I love to frequent, and between being sandwiched between the trendy bars on Pier Avenue in Hermosa Beach and the sometimes questionable crowd rolling through, The Lighthouse Cafe clings on to its dignity by being unique and using its history to attract different crowds.

The Lighthouse was converted into a bar in 1940 and started playing Jazz music in 1949. Since then, The Lighthouse has become a notable Jazz landmark on the west coast. It's had its fluctuations throughout the years, but now they've seemed to have reached a compromise. Every night has a different theme, and they really seem to reach across the board.

Mondays are karaoke nights, where debauchery and humiliation go hand in hand.
Tuesdays are Trailor Park Tuesdays, where you can hear "great" 80s metal, classic rock and some tribute bands.
Wednesday night is Reggae night. Smoke on the patio, just be careful what you light up. Cops go crazy in Hermosa ;].
Thursday nights are my favorite nights. Jazz from 5 - 8:30!
Friday's and Saturday's are sort of wild card nights, where you get different bands, playing different sounds. Some are cover bands.
Sunday's offer the most in one day. Jazz brunch in the morning, followed by Reggae, and topped off with 80s rock after that!

The venue is charming and cozy, with round tables and high seating. There's also a patio option, equipped with space heaters. The wait staff is friendly and approachable (having your order taken isn't a big production), and the prices are reasonable, as are the portions of food. Dress is casual, and girls, heels are welcome, just be careful of those metal rings around the tables! I'm a shorty, so I need to use them as a stepping stone, and it's not so easy in heels.

It's 21 and over after 5:00, but if you're there prior to that, you should be fine. Parking isn't necessarily easy. There's a structure located near The Lighthouse that is more accessible (not to mention more affordable at $3.00) than the silly valet parking that some places offer.

My ears are still ringing. Anyway, I came here with my friend and her boy's boys and well the crowd, it just reminded me of that dave chappelle skit with john mayer. If you know what i'm talking about then you know, if not then just forget about it!

But yeah, friday night I guess is rock/alternative live band night?

I don't know if it was because of the band or the night but the crowd was just too old for me. I don't mean to be an ageist but when I'm trying to get to the front of the crowd to sing along with the band who's playing a cover of one of my favorite No Doubt songs and I get hit by a lady who's probably in her late 40's and looks like she's had way too many tanning sessions and tells me to get out of her way...there's something wrong. I wanted to tell her off and be mean but I didn't want run the risk of getting in a fight with this woman and potentially giving her a stroke or something.

But yeah, if you're into live music I say come here but research first what genre is playing that night before you go.

i dunno but i had a great time here Wed nite ... it was fun.
i got here 7pm and discovered it was happy hour til 8pm.
Cabo margarita sounds good ... so i tried one for just $5.
hmm, it was yummy! a lil sweet like a Cadillac margarita.
so i had another then she arrived... timing is everything. ;)

the sun was setting ... mood was mellow ...all clicked nicely.
so why not have another Cabo margarita? then we ordered
a pizza with carne asada and avocado ... yum, it's good too.
next thing i knew, it was 9pm and the band started playing.
reggae! i love live reggae... the band (Detour) was chilled.

Major reason for loving The Lighthouse? LIVE MUSIC!

Been going here since it reopened around the time I lived in Hermosa. A great spot with a lot of interesting people. Give me live music and I am happy. (most of the time)

The drinks are good too, and food (as I recall) is decent too.

When you're the DD, there are so many things you realize that you could have missed out on had you been drunk. Sometimes you should just be drunk.

I split this one star rating between the nice, fine-ass bouncer who carded us and the laughs I got out of watching all the uncoordinated dancing and excess of jazz hands.

It happened to be Friday night with the cover band "Jungle Juice". Now with cover bands, I'm of the opinion that since you're doing a cover, you should probably stick with trying to duplicate the original song as close as possible. That wasn't happening here tonight and it was throwing off my sing-along vibe.

I didn't get the crowd at all here. There was a big "I Don't Care" element to it. I don't care what a fool of myself I'm making on the dance floor. I don't care that my g-string is hanging out and everyone can see. I don't care that everyone is watching my gf grinding on my leg to a Green Day cover. I don't care that this dress is 2 sizes too small for me. I don't care that everyone is watching me while I accost my date who won't kiss me.

At first I was peeved about the $5 cover (like who pays a cover to go to a bar liike this?) but then when I realized there was a band there who would take a cut, I was alright with it, until I heard them.

Oh and the last thing I want to bitch about? The bar seating/standing area is so narrow that, unless you are butted up against it, you can't wait in line to get a drink without one of the bouncers coming up to you with his annoying flashlight and removing you from the narrow aisle. Stupid! Who designed this space?

Coming here made me talk myself into finding all sorts of reasons to never come back.

It's 12:30 in the morning, and I'm hearing impaired. Let me tell you why.

I went for a jog around Hermosa Beach earlier today, and noticed that this bar near the pier had Karaoke on Monday nights, and still being one who has never Karaoke'd before, I thought I'd give it a shot.

So, when I strolled up at 9:30 this evening, I didnt hear amateurs singing on the stage. Instead, I heard a metal band, and then realized it was Tuesday, not Monday. Tuesday is Full Metal Jacket night.

So I thought, what the hay. Went in and ordered a Newcastle... just as the band began a 20 minute break. So I wait for their 2nd set while watching videos on the flat panel. Happened to catch the Sex Pistols doing Pretty Vacant, so that held my attention for a while.

The band came back and rocked the house. They even went WAY back and did Change by Van Halen.

I visited the men's room after the 2nd set, and found myself next to the rhythm guitarist. (its a pretty small bathroom). [MENTAL NOTE: I don't think the guitarist felt comfortable holding a conversation at the urinal.]

Now I feel bloated and irritated, because the brown ale is sitting heavy and my ears... they are a-ringin.

So...

Pros: Fish Bowls
Cons: Old people dancing. Weird drunk nerdy people (and not good nerds... which i consider myself to be), but scary nerds. that likely got drunk for the first time in their lives and decided to "come out of their shell" by doing some weird sort of dance. they almost looked like they were nerds on MASSIVE amounts of acid. But they weren't... and then there was the human with the jersey type hair (90s style peeps) who was doing quite the ass shake. INAPPRO to an 80s COVER BAND. Who shakes their ass to tainted love?!?!??!??

Positives:
1. you and your friends can take over the joint.
2. There was 1 attractive man there outside of my group. That's right. Only 1. In the land of HERMOSA (hot, slightly amazingly trashy guys)... nope. only 1. and he wasn't from california... and was wearing a carolina shirt... GO HEELS. ONE QUALITY DUDE?! COME ON! I go to Hermosa to stare at men with rippling abs. NOTHING ELSE.

We left... and went to henneseys.

If you want to see some old people (like people in their 60's!!!) showing off their hottest dance moves, which trust me, have their own wow factor without having the influence of alcohol, then The Lighthouse is the place for you.

Definitely a people watching place because everyone in my group could not stop watching the old people grab each other's butts while they were dancing to a live 80's cover band. The cover band was so-so but part of the reason I didn't like them was because this bar has not so great acoustics and the sound was all off balance meaning you could barely understand the lyrics to the songs.

Besides seeing the old people shake their bon bons the drinks here are CHEAP. 6 of us got mixed drinks for a whopping total of $31!!! And then my friend Kerri and I got their famous Dizzy drink which came recommended from the security guard we talked to while we waited to get up to the bar, and he even said "hey...16" to the bar tender. Which is their secret lingo for hooking up customers and those customers were us!!! This drink comes packed with alcohol and comes in a giant fishbowl complete with two really long straws and this drink was tasty but definitely packs a punch within this punch mixture!!

As the night went on, the customers inside started decreasing in age, and eventually it had a pretty good mix of people but it took a while for the fountain of youth to play its role at this hole in the wall bar. Oh ya, and their little mini corndogs----not good, and their fries came out cold!!! I made friends with a girl who was friends with the keyboardist in the band and they brought him COLD food!!! that is just wrong....just wrong....

I went to the Lighthouse with a friend of mine (who happens to be a lot older than me) for happy hour and a jazz band.

The band rocked, the company rocked, my ginger ale was tasky and a piece of the BBQ chicken pizza was okay.

PS I know they're trying to be all cool and what not but they should dist the rafters

Eeeek? I hadn't reviewed the lighthouse yet? How can that be? Ok here it goes... Of all the bars in Hermosa that have live bands on random nights I'd rather see a band here. It just feels right here and it feels wrong everywhere else. I've seen rock bands here, reggae bands and cover bands (bring back the Dave Matthews Band Cover Band!) I'm also a fan of the music they play between bands.

They have a nice patio outside and their food ROCKS! If you're walking by, looking for a place to eat and there is room on the patio... you should take advantage of that opportunity!

There's no Air Conditioning at the Lighthouse so on hot days it's ass hot inside! The bouncers and bartenders are friendly. If you're into mixed drinks try the Dizzy... it comes in a fish bowl with multiple straws has rum, vodka, Jager, Red Bull and Fruit Juice and it's easy to drink!

Even though there's sometimes a $5 cover I've never had to pay it : )

When all the other bars are overflowing and have lines up the bunghole to get in, The Lighthouse was a safe haven for our tired @sses to plop down and re-hydrate and refuel after tanning and napping on the sand during our July 4th.

Why was there no line here? Maybe cuz this bar is the only divey spot on the pier in Hermosa. All the other bars remind me of the Sunset strip where all the star f0ckers go to and congregate at. The Lighthouse is the equivalent of the little dive on Hollywood Blvd. r0cks with bands, friendly waitresses and YUMMY mini burgers. One order comes with four different little burgers and fries, which I only got to have the taste of ONE burger since Dirty D ate the rest. Why was I so surprised? ;pp Lub you Double D!

As far as the drinks went, I'm sure this place had very well to do with the fact that everyone in our party were wasted off their arses by the time we blew this popsicle joint.

I haven't been to Hermosa Beach in a few years, but after this last 4th, I'm starting to think I need to visit more often....

One of the less busy bars on the pier, it still does the trick for me with cheap drinks and live music! Once again, I'm easily amused.

On any given night, you'll have a live band on stage with genres from 80s to Ska to Reggae to Punk to my favorite local band EVER, Building a Better Spaceship. Usually, no cover or if ever there is one, it's usually only $5 to get in. I like this place because it hasn't conformed to the other attitude-driven bars on the pier... like Sangria or Dragon.... and there's hardly ever a line! They serve mediocre food but have a heavy hand in pouring drinks. A big board above the bar shows all their enormous, colorful, specialty drinks if you wanna get hammered... and who doesn't wanna get hammered?

The crowd is pretty hit or miss depending on the band that's playing, they've got your cougars, your hotties, the implants, the gangstas, the rockabilly folks, beach goers sporting flip flops and not much else... and then the normal folks, like me! : )
