3.25/5 - solid service, but kinda mehh on the fish
coworker and i came for a slightly early happy hour, and it was cool enough in the afternoon to sit out on their patio. there was some kind of filming going on across the street, so we got some nice entertainment too.
i appreciate how they openly served our chips with all 3 of their house salsa options (the mango and the roasted were more interested than the standard). my friend got a veggie quesadilla which looked filling and gooey. i had some grilled fish tacos served with a couple standard sides. i'd say the mayonnaise sauce that normally comes with the fish tasted a little too uhhh industrial, and then the fish was pretty dry. it was an odd ratio to bite into a small dry cube of fish, then into a large chunk of the red cabbage slaw on top, which also was oddly dry. overall it's not horrible, but also just can't compare to true california options.
the search for good tacos continues...
My initial review of this place was rather dismal as we had dismal service and sub-par food. I received a polite e-mail from the management and was invited back. After seeing them at the Louisiana marathon and sampling what they had, I decided to give it another shot.
It went a bit better this time. Our server was nice enough to acommodate me coming late and brought me a water in a timely manner. As for the food, a friend and I split a Catalina chicken sandwich. I though the flavors were well balanced with the chicken, the avocado, and the bread. I tried a dessert, a Jorge's Low Rider Desert Dessert, which was okay. It's nice to have fruit in a dessert, but I don't think a fried tortilla compliments it that well. I would recommend the chips and salsa; it's hard to go wrong when it's made in house.
Our server wasn't snide and he didn't keep the change. He was a nice guy.
Cold Beer & Good Burger
I went in here for quick bite on a weekday night earlier this week. Â Bar crowd seemed fun, and were most likely regulars. Â The bartender certainly seemed engaged with everyone at the bar and all were having fun.
Table service was fast, friendly, courteous, and responsive. Â There seemed to be a conference going on at the convention center in town and a German guy walked into the bar. Â When his waitress recognized that he was German, she quickly called another waitress over who spoke German. Â She sat down with him, explained the menu, made him feel welcome, and took his order in German. Â Impressive.
Back to the food. Â The Lucy burger was excellent, accompanied by sweet-potato fries which were outstanding. Â
Overall, a solid, nondescript bar with excellent staff and decent food. Â if you are looking for fancy decor or non-bar food, this is not the place for you.
Their chips and house salsa was great. Make sure to ask for it if they don't initially offer it to you when you get seated.
I had the craw fish quesadilla. The food and service was great. Their menu is influenced greatly by California. Since I was on vacation looking for some local flavor, seeing all the same offerings I'm used to seeing back home wasn't exciting. But that's just me. Many might welcome the fact they can have their home favorites while on the road. If I was in the area again, I would pass on this place and go to a place that offered a more authentic Louisiana meal.
Lucy's is a fun place to hang out with your friends. I come here almost every time I go to BR. Like Out of Bounds in Metairie, the staff at Lucy's knows how to have a good time. They even have lots of special events here to kick it up a notch.
The food is decent overall with lots of forgettable items but with a few notable exceptions. The Juicy Lucy is an awesome burger. It is a staple on their menu for a reason. The Fiesta burger is different and tasty (a burger served between two tortillas). The mahi mahi is tender and delicious.
My friend Brittany works here. She is the best bartender around! I'm not just saying that b/c she is a friend. She really is an awesome bartender and she is always having fun while at work.
The bar serves great drinks and they have lots of different margaritas for the ladies (and gents who fancy margaritas)!
LAID-BACK SPOT TO HAVE FUN WITH FRIENDS!
RECOMMEND!!!
If you are looking for "regular" mexican or bar fare, this place is great. Â Me, my husband and some friends ate here after having a few drinks downtown. Â I was a little nervous as we were the only diners at 5:30 in the evening. Â Despite my fears, the food was good. Â
The chips and salsa as well as the queso were great appetizers. Â I had the "baja rolls" which were kinda like a soft shell taco, but were great! Â It was more than I could eat. Â My husband had a burger, which he said was great. All of our other friends had either poboys or burgers and also raved about them. Â
When I passed this place at lunch it was packed. Â During the early evening on a school night it was not so busy. Â I don't think this had to do with the food or service, but because of the time of year we visited. Â
I would not make my way to downtown Baton Rouge just for this restaurant, but if you happen to be downtown and are looking for a place with "simple" food and good service, I suggest  Lucy's!
Cal-Mex is a pretty good description, fish tacos being the central feature of the genre, the quality here is  kinda so-so if you have spent time in San Diego it is way below  that standard but on the other hand I am not sure if BR has something better than this in the fish taco / surf bar food market or not. OK place to hang out and have some drinks. The food was sorta kinda OK I guess, just sort of mediocre. Perky waitresses.
Review Source:Stumbled across this place while we were out and about in Baton Rouge. Overall impression? Eh.
Had to wait a bit to be seated, and quite a bit longer to be greeted by a server. The cold mango salsa was nice, but the chips it came with were pretty soggy. The veggie sandwich was basically a grilled cheese... which I guess would've been okay if that's how it was described on the menu. The steak salad was... eh.
There isn't a lot to choose from in this area, but I bet if there was, this place wouldn't be around for long.
My husband and I tried to eat at Lucy's last night prior to a concert. We arrived and were seated immediately. Almost all the tables were full, but there weren't people standing around waiting to be seated until after we arrived. It was busy, but nothing a skilled staff shouldn't be able to handle. After we were seated, we waited 15 minutes as waiters served the tables all around us and ignored us completely. Finally I had to flag down one of the waiters to let them know we hadn't even put in a drink order yet. About 5 minutes later a waitress came over (one of the ones who'd ignored us), and took our drink order. To her credit, she was very friendly. We put in our food order with our drink order and let the waitress know we were going to a concert in 45 minutes. I ordered a veggie sandwich and my husband ordered 2 tacos, but we waited a half hour and still hadn't gotten our food. So we flagged down the waitress and asked about our order. She went to check with the kitchen and returned telling us it would be another 15 minutes because the restaurant was really busy. At that point we had to leave without dinner in order to get to the concert on time. So overall, we were at this place for 45 minutes with no food (and it's not like we were ordering beef Wellington...it was a sandwich and tacos...). We left for the concert with no dinner, and I ate soggy fries from the theater concession for dinner. This was my first night out since being put on bed rest 4 months ago prior to having my baby, and Lucy's very nearly ruined it. Thankfully the concert was good, because Lucy's was terrible.
Review Source:Went to Lucy's on two sepeate occasions.
The first I went with friends from work. New to baton rouge we decided Lucy's was alright since everything else seemed closed or a loud party scene. We wanted drinks and food.
My peers had a fish dish  wich was said to be tasty. My other peer had the taco which he thought sucked. They got to him cold and lifeless. He kept mentioning you can find cheaper tacos twice as good in Chicago. His Beam and Coke was WEAK even though he ordered a double.
I had a turkey burger with a side salad with "cilantro vinegrette" The vinegrette was virtually flavorless on top of a mediocore green salad. It was okay. The turkey burger was tasty, but could have been WAY better.
The food was average. Service okay.
note: A woman carring a backpack that had a knapsack over it walked in and stood with a menu in her hand wating to get noticed. She waited five minutes and left. Three employees stood around her staring at her like she was an alien. I didnt like this at all. Servers must withold judgement and be nice to all. This lack of courtesy rubbed me the wrong way.
Second occassion:
Had to work on superbowl sunday downtown. Had no car. Walked around after work to try and find a place showning the game. The Belle casino had the wrong atmosphere and the Hollywood was too far. Lucy's saved me. Luckily they had 3 buck draft Abita Ales and 50cent chicken wings.
Started out with chips and salsa (2.95) Salsa wasnt hot, a little salty, and well I wouldnt call it salsa, but more of a coarse dipping sauce that was average and tasted like it came from a jar. Tostadas were "baked fresh" but they were thin. It was okay.
The beer was okay, but I put that review on Abita not on Lucy's.
The chicken wings were suprisingly good. Then again, after two beers watchin a good close game and an aging Madonna lip sync, anything will please. But hell, for 50cents a wing, you cant go wrong.
The bartender was attentive given the full occupied bar, but soon the waiters and bartender acted like little children throwing ice at each other. I could have done without this.
Dont come here to eat a meal as I think the value is weak compared to some other places.
But if you wanna grab a couple of beers/drinks and snack then sure.
TIP: Wed. is chicken wing night.
All in all...a typical "midscale" chain.
Really liked going to this place last year. It was kinda nice to get away from usual br fare. My fiance loved the seared tuna, and I usually went with the Rollitos, a taquito like dish.
Went there last week, was really disappointed. They no longer have the wasabi seared tuna or rollitos. Service sucked as well. The rice and beans used to be good, but seemed like instant made this time. It seems like they are concerned mostly with drinks, so maybe you won't notice the food sucks.
I've eaten here a bunch of times, but after my last visit, I am done with lucys.
Went here while visiting Baton Rouge for work. I was looking for a light dinner. Â I was here on Taco Tuesday, decent prices and drinks were cheap. Â
I ordered a beef taco, a fish taco and a crawfish taco on wholewheat taco soft taco shells. Â The crawfish was my favorite, the beef was ok as was the fish taco. Â There was too much taco shell and not enough meat.
If you use foursquare, check in and you get free salsa and chips and the salsa is homemade and delish! Â
I sat outside on the patio and really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere. Â Definitely a good place to relax and chill after a long day. Â The servers don't pressure you to keep ordering food or drinks.
Lucy's Retired SYSCO Shack.
Stopped in for dinner before a show at Manship Theatre next door. Â I tried the grilled shrimp poboy, and my wife had the fried version of the same. Â This place is awful. Â The fries and shrimp were obviously frozen Sysco fare. Â The bread was a large hot-dog style bun. Â Also, the food tasted like it was fried in old tractor greese. Â
The waiter was nice, Â but took the fake surfer bar routine too far. "Have you guys ever been here? No? Well take your time, look around and enjoy. Â Kick your feet off and dig your toes into the sand..." Â Seriously? Â Chili's serves more authentic tex-mex fair than this place serves. Â (please don't read that as a compliment to Chili's...)
I regret Subway wasn't opened.
OK I have tried to like this place for no other reason than it is 20 feet from where I work but I can't manage it. After numerous bad experiences starting with over an hour wait between appetizer and entrée, which to the credit of the manager my party received business cards good for free meals next time around, however next time around one of my co-workers had a jerk burger that was well somewhat tainted. The waitress tried to convince her that it was the jerk seasoning and that's how its supposed to taste even though my co-worker spends several weeks every year in Jamaica and is pretty familiar with jerk seasoning. Another co-worker tried the burger and seconded that something was very off about it but again we tried it for a third time. Like I said it's really convenient but honestly the food is not good and the service is slow really slow. I mean they can't even get queso right. It's bright orange and I'm almost positive made of some cheese powder, nothing taste fresh and all I can hope is it's a better bar than it is a restaurant.
Review Source:Seeing the mixed reviews on Yelp, I decided I wanted to check out this place while I was downtown last night. Â I mean, it sounds promising: the bio on the website and the menu all sound like it could have potential for the Baja California style food I miss so much.
We order some chips and guacamole before even opening a menu. Â Chips arrive hot, fresh, appropriately salted. Â Good! Â
The guacamole looked like it had cabbage mixed in with it. Â Uh, what? Â Well, come to realize the container that they had (the white ceramic restaurant standard) was filled 2/3 of the way full with a small scoop of guacamole on top. Â That's it. Â We ate all of the guac, and only used up 1/3 of our chips. Â Yes, I understand avocados are expensive, and making guacamole is time intensive. Â But to charge $7 for what equates to maybe 1/4 of a cup of guacamole with a basket of chips is complete and utter BS.
We ordered salsa, so our chips wouldn't go to waste and were charged an additional 2.95 (no more chips). Â Yes, complete crap.
I did ask for future reference about the rice & beans served with the tacos. Â The server knew they served black beans, but described the rice as a "dirty rice." Â If he was just using it to describe the color, that's one thing, but I started to tear up thinking of the simple baja california white rice & black beans combo. Â And, when you order tacos the options are corn (hard shell) and flour (soft shell). Â Um, why can't we have soft corn tortillas? Â
I'm intrigued by their bloody mary's, and the chips weren't bad. Â I'm not saying I won't come back for chips, salsa and a bloody mary, but I do not plan on ever trying their food.
I know I'm probably just homesick and bitter. Â If you go and enjoy their food, great! Just do not think in any way it's representative of baja california style food. Â Just do yourself a favor: plan a trip to Southern CA, experience In n Out Burger & even lower-end fast-food style food like Wahoo's, and you'll realize what Lucy's could do but don't. Â Sigh.
The food served here is not a good value for what you you get. The jerk chicken appetizer was good but at $6 for 4 of them it was somewhat of a tease. The beef tacos were not much better (if at all) than a fast food taco that you can get nationwide and for much cheaper. The beer selection was decent but nothing that blew me away. This is a good place to go if you are downtown and going to dinner because the whole area basically shuts down and this is one of a handful of places that stays open. If you have a car it is worth the drive to find a better place to eat. The atmosphere inside is ok, somewhat like another beach themed nationwide chain.
