I am really glad I tried this place. The decor has totally changed and is quite cozy inside. I have eaten the Jade Rama Noodles as well as the Garlic and Pepper Delight. Both were delicious, but I was over the moon about the Jade Rama. I always thought the other Thai places in the area were average, and I'm now making M Kafe my go-to place for Thai cravings.

This is really a neighborhood jewel and is just what the underdeveloped Thorndale really needs. I have eaten here now more than 5 times and have never been disappointed. I have tried the Mango Chicken, Panang Curry, and some veggie dishes as well. The hand rolled vegan egg rolls are awesome! The staff is very welcoming and friendly which is a nice change from Indie, where the staff are not rude, but indifferent. The interior is a bit bright but small and intimate.

Plenty of vegetarian options, delicious, good portions, good prices, freindly staff. Love it!

First, I take the rating system seriously. A five star review means five friggin stars. Like, truly incredible food and experience. There's no way a little storefront place is going to get a five star review. Most places would probably get two and a half or three.

Second, I don't review often and only when I feel strongly.

Now, this place did not look promising. It had turned over a couple of times, doesn't usually have customers, took a while to decorate, etc. We lived a block and a half away and never went because I was sorta biased against it for no reason. plus it's around thecorner from Indie, where we've been eating since it opened.

We got a menu under our door and considered it a few times, but I shot it down because I don't let go of my opinions easily. I'm working on it and as part of that, we decided to order from here.

So, we're vegan. The menu surprised us with its extensive vegan options. I had the Jade Rama w/ peanut sauce so I could easily compare to Indie's version (which I have pretty regularly). The peanut sauce was fresh and flavorful with just a touch of spiciness, the spinach noodles were a pleasant surprise and the brocolli cooked to just right -- not too soft nor overdone. My wife had the Tom Kah soup. She says it has a delicious, rich coconut milk base and a lot of hearty veggies you don't expect to have in a typical Tom Kah. We also split on our opinion of the dumplings -- I thought they were crisp and tasty, she wasn't as impressed.

We agreed both of our dishes were, no kidding, better than Indie's equivalent dishes.

Lesson learned: don't judge before you try. We'll be going back.

M Kafe is an amazing restaurant with an amazing vision. The food at this Thai/Vietnamese cafe is delicious, very fresh and healthy. The vegetables are always cooked just right- tender yet still crisp. All of their sauces are homemade and vegan, and they have an entire vegan menu.Their entrees are unique and everything I have eaten there is wonderful. They are under new ownership by a woman who is a 20-year veteran in the restaurant industry, and are no longer serving pizza or carrying grocery items. The ambiance is much better than before- the decor is simple and classy, the lighting is soft, and there are flowers on every table.

I met the new owner, Patty, and I have never seen someone who cares so deeply about what they do for a living. She made a point of coming to our table to make sure our food was to our liking, and had a long conversation with us. She told me that they use locally made tofu that uses locally grown, organic soybeans, and they use organic vegetables whenever possible and triple-wash them. She is passionate about healthy eating and creating dishes that will satisfy customers.

The prices are very reasonable, and the food you get is more than worth the price. You can get a Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwich on French bread for only $4, or a combo with a Banh Mi, Miso soup, and Thai spring rolls for under $9. Their spring rolls are great, and I loved the Royal Rama with broccoli, carrots, peanut sauce, grilled tofu and jade noodles. I can't wait to try more of their entrees!

If you love food that is both healthy and tasty and want to support local, organic businesses, M Kafe is a must-try!

With the sad news today that El Norte tacos has closed, I decided I had to try a new place for delivering my dinner. Kismet... a new flyer came in the mail. Mike and I ordered a thai and japanese dinner of Sushi and a basil chicken dish from M Kafe which has just opened (correction--under new management) at 1136 W. Thorndale. The sushi was a bit different than I expected but very fresh and good, and the basil chicken dish is not only yummy but also filled with awesome veggies and super super fresh. To top all of this good news off, the lady that took my order called back to be sure we liked the food. You can't ask for more than that! http://mkafe.com or 773-878-8060.

Good food and prices, but long wait and there was hair in my sandwich..

The food was good for what it was priced. Supposedly they are going to do a renovation and be really nice in about a month's time (mid to late-september)....Had the pad thai. Could use more fish sauce. Pho was really good and for 6.60 a bowl...a BIG bowl, it is worth it. Bubble tea was a bit more icy and chalky than I would have liked, but for the price, it's good to go. They have Bahn Mi sandwiches which I would like to try one day. The pizza looks good too, but not so sure. Is a weird mix definitely, but glad to have a "good" place to get these items in my neighborhood for cheap.

I just came back from there after hunting for a spot to calm my bubble tea needs and also to get a great sandwich without booking it up to Argyle or back down to Chinatown like I normally do 3-5 times a week. Also, I eat a lot of Asian and tropical cuisines, so my pallet knows when it receivs something of a treasure. To start, it is a cute family owned business with a great atmosphere. The service was great and the woman that was making the food was just amazing. She knew that when I ordered a sandwich plus 2 BBQ Bao's, that I would not be eating the Bao's until later. So she stopped, asked me and gave me instructions on how to heat them up later to keep the flavor.

The sandwich was also amazing, and the veggies were so fresh. The cucumber crunched, the BBQ pork was perfectly intertwined between the carrots and all this sweet, savory was topped with fresh parsley that left a wonderful aftertaste of clean after eating. The prices are also very good as well. It's amazing that the sandwich, 2 Bao's and a bubble tea were under $11.00.

All in all, for a really good local edgewater place to get great food, wonderful attentive service that will have you leaving with a happy go lucky smile on your face as if you'd discovered a new guilty pleasure, I recommend to give M Kafe a try....It was well worth it and I will be a regular here.

I just stopped in here for a bubble tea after the beach. I probably would recommend this place if you don't like kids serving you and making your food. Bless their hearts for trying and i guess good for learning the trade but seriously the maybe 5-7year old girl gave me 7 nickels back for my change....she had a quarter to begin with, i felt like she just want to practice counting by fives. To top it off she was the one who made my smoothie, it was pretty mediocre in my opinion, too runny and pretty flavorless, but they also don't use real fruit so that definitely sways my opinion(i usually ask but I forgot, all i was thinking about was something cold..)
So all and all if you support child labor and/or don't mind child like mannerisms when it comes to service and food this would probably be a decent place for you. Price were also pretty decent.

I'm a little mystified that M Kafe is a combo pizza/Thai joint. In what world does THAT make sense. It's off-putting to read a menu that's pizza... and Thai. Like, wouldn't you want to just specialize in one flavor profile and make it totally awesome?

That was way harsh, Tai. I'm just going to shake my head at the weirdness and carry on.

I popped into M Kafe and ordered a strawberry bubble tea. For $3, it's priced really well. While I liked the actual smoothie I wasn't a huge fan of the tapioca balls. They tasted oddly like coffee, which wasn't great with the strawberry. They're also mushier than I normally prefer. What can I say? I like my balls firm.

I would recommend carrying out as it's really hot inside, small and has NO ambiance.

This is a great place to take out, deliver, or dine in. Their pho is excellent. There's nothing bad I can say about M-Kafe. I plan on trying their pizza, too.

Yuck. I don't know if it was an off day or what but every dish was bad bad bad. I ordered Pad Thai w/ Beef, Red Curry w/ Tofu and two BBQ Bao for delivery.

First the Good:
-About 30min after I ordered they called to tell me they only had one BBQ bao left and would I mind if they replaced it with pork. I thought that was very courteous of them.
-The delivery was about 10 minutes earlier than estimated. Love that.

Now the Bad:
-The pad thai was almost inedible. The egg was big thick chunks cooked omelet style and seriously overdone (most pieces were well brown on one side). The beef was also way overdone and my mouth muscles were actually sore from chewing afterwards. The noodles; (you guessed it!) also overdone, and the sauce/seasoning was weird and slightly chalky as though they didn't mix the dry spices well enough. A minor detail, but the accompanying lime wedge was seriously old and brown. It could barely manage a feeble two drops of juice.
-The red curry was even sadder than the pad thai. It was just a few chunks of tofu, scallion and bamboo shoots, floating aimlessly in an extremely watery grey pink broth of...well, "curry" I guess. The scant few pieces of tofu were actually good though.
-Sadly, save for two bites, the bao ended up in the trash. It arrived wrapped in cellophane and rock hard. Gentle 10-15sec microwaving bursts with a bowl of water for steam support did nothing to revive the poor buns.

I'm giving them one star for customer care and one for speedy delivery. Unfortunately, you can't fill your belly on customer care and speedy delivery so I won't be ordering from here again.

Quality, cheap food is hard to come by these days, but not at the Vietnamese-Thai-American fusion food joint that is M Kafe.

For less than $7, I scored a strawberry bubble tea and a bahn mi (a vietnamese sub sandwich). There are like 6 types of bahn mi that cater to both meat eaters and vegetarians, such as BBQ pork, tuna, lemongrass chicken, and lemongrass tofu (those with psychic vegan powers, ask to hold the mayo).

The fruit bubble teas are made with fresh ingredients, and the green tea version uses a high quality, finely ground green tea powder called Matcha. Bubble teas take about five minutes to make from the time you order.

To those interested in noodle dishes, try the pad thai and pho, which are delicious and generously portioned considering their price.

M Kafe's location is a stone's throw from the Thorndale el. Decor is colorful and in some areas, still being remodeled. There are Buddha statues, cooking books on shelves, and small, European-style tables which fit 20 to 30 people.

The clientele ranges from kids coming home from school, to families ordering a pizza, to people like myself looking for a low-priced meal (try the Pho for cheap nutritiousness).

The only downside - the credit card minimum is ten bucks.

Like another reviewer said, once Min discovers how much people love her food, she should charge more. But even if that does happen, the prices would just match that of Argyle restaurants!

Support Min, and you'll support a woman who knows food and knows her customers. Stop on by!

After hitting a playground with some friends and their daughter, we were ready for a snack and decided bubble tea would fit the bill. All of us had been meaning to stop by M Kafe for several months and are so glad we finally did!

I had a lychee smoothie, which was absolutely perfect. The mango bubble tea was also a hit. We ended up getting a bun to share, which was good enough that I decided to stop by again for dinner.

For dinner, we ate family style and shared everything. The pad thai was really good, and just the right amount of spice to the sweetness, and good proportion of noodles to veggies. The bowl of steak pho was huge, with a delightfully fragrant broth. Delicious! The seaweed spring rolls were unusual, but tasty. They had a sheet of seaweed paper rolled around the veggies and shrimp before the rice wrapping. And the buns, well, I could eat them every day. BBQ or plain pork are the best. My friends and I walked out very satisfied and happy with our new find.

The portions were generous and the prices very affordable. Depending on what you order, you could have a filling meal for anywhere between $5-10. It looked like most entrees started at $5.99. We had a good time chatting with the owner, and while the place is undergoing some renovations, the food was good enough that we didn't mind the unfinished space.

Give this place a try and support a fantastic neighborhood business!

My friend was in town and we decided to drop by because I've been meaning to check it out since I moved to the neighborhood. The ladies were really sweet. Mentioned that they used to be a bakery but because of the economy they were focusing on different new types of food. I think they're pretty focused on the pho, rice dishes, bubble tea, pizza, and the usual asian appetizers (egg rolls, spring rolls, etc.) My friend and I thought it was pretty good. We got the pad thai, spring rolls, egg rolls, and short ribs all made to order sooo good. They are never busy as far as I've seen but I would say drop by and give these ladies some business they are pretty nice. Don't mind the decor inside, they said they would be remodeling at some point to kind of focus on being a restaurant but still be able to do fast food.

Yummy and cheap, simple Vietnamese food. Tofu is available, though not listed on the menu. Dishes can be made vegetarian, but be sure to inquire about oils and broths. The pho was very good, if lacking in vegetables. The owner is lovely. Stop in and say hello.

Be prepared to pick up as delivery isn't really set up there yet. We've always loved her bao and decided to try her other foods. The lemongrass pork chops were outstanding. I meant to order the Pho, but forgot (mental note to order next time). On a lark, we got the shrimp scampi pizza as an appetizer. OMG, the pizza is now a new favorite. Her crusts are great and the shrimp and garlic, no tomato sauce, pizza, is out of this world. Please help this restaurant thrive. The owner often has her kids over and it's a family place. Great prices...until she figures out people love her food.

I wanted to check this place out because I used to visit once in a while when it was Bunz Bakery. I remember the owner stating that shortly, it would be changing to an asian take out place.

I ordered their grand opening special for $6, which was a gigantic take out tray of Chicken Fried Rice. There was also another chicken dish on special (cant remember what it was), as well as a pork chop special. I know fried rice is not exactly the most adventurous thing to order, but I wanted something hot and steamy on a cold dreary day like today.

The Fried Rice was OK, nothing special, but certainly not bad. The owner said that their Pho is really good, and its what they are known for at her other restaurant in Chinatown. I'm thinking to myself "If you have an outstanding dish that you are excited about, why arent you offering THAT as a grand opening special"?.

I guess the whole time I was waiting for my order, I was thinking about what a loss it was not having the bakery there. She still has some bakery items, but they are mostly costco cakes and other pre-made things that are wrapped up. In addition to that, she has potato chips, candy bars, donuts, pizza, vietnamese grocery items..... Such a disappointment. The owner is a very nice lady and I wish her well. She just needs to focus on one or two things and do them really well. If she is super talented at Pho, make it a pho place! If she is super talented at baking (which I know from Bunz Bakery), than she should do that. My fear is that she will try to be everything to everybody, and fail. That would be such a loss to the community.

I was originally on my way to Dominick's after getting off the Red Line but changed my mind at the last minute and decided to stick my head in what used to be Bunz. I only stopped in because I did a double take and saw some people eating what looked like big bowls of Pho by the window. To my surprise, they did have pho! I was too excited for words because I only live down the block and was glad to see I could get Pho just around the corner. I approached the counter and was happily greeted by Minh, the owner. She was super friendly and really helpful. I ordered a bowl of Beef Pho as well as a Pork Bun to go.

Anyway...both the Beef Pho and Pork Banh Bao passed the test. The Pho broth was actually really fragrant, very traditional. Pork Banh Bao filling was really close to how I would make it at home. Overall I think this place does a good job of giving a little taste of Vietnamese flavor to the neighborhood. I'm kinda skeptical of the Pizzas they sell, but who knows?

If I'm ever feeling lazy to go out to Argyle I could call for delivery (which they do). I'm so glad I stopped in here today.
