I was there this last week for an evening event where there was musical entertainment. This is a nice place and I liked the atmosphere. Because it was cold outside I was looking forward to ordering a hot sandwich or bowl of soup. I was disappointed because every item I asked for wasn't available. I eventually just ordered coffee and a dessert. But, you could have made more money if you'd had hot foods available. Others behind me were disappointed as well.
Review Source:This is a cozy little cafe in Downtown South Bend, perfect for studying, with ample space and seating and free wifi. Â It's not usually that crowded so it's a really relaxed environment.
I've come here on many a studying outing, and always get a lot done. Â
Prices are fairly reasonable, and I like the coffee, as well as the food options I've tried. Â They have pretty much the standard menu selection, including sandwiches, pastries, and soups. Â And I absolutely love the 'Stay Awhile Coffee' option, which lets you get unlimited refills of coffee for a very reasonable price, as someone else mentioned. Â
It's also open until late on saturdays!
A regular stop of mine for coffee at least, since I work downtown. They roast their own coffee and it's wonderful, they have four daily brews to choose from (a house blend, decaf, a flavor, and another variety) - and a tip: if you bring your own mug you get a small discount. Espresso drinks are ok but a little overly sweet and expensive for my taste, which doesn't actually affect me much since I'm more of a black coffee kind of person for the most part anyways.
Food: salads and sandwiches aren't anything special and are way overpriced. BUT - the soups are wonderful, they've told me they are made from scratch and I believe it. The white chicken chili is on the menu daily and is amazing. Also impressed with the breakfast sandwiches - again, a little expensive (but that is to be expected at cafes, I find) but you get a healthy portion of eggs and not a thin sliver like I've had some places - the croissant with egg, ham and swiss is my favorite. Baked goods are also all homemade and wonderful - some of the offerings are a bit overly sweet and frosted for me but are sure to please most people. The peanut butter bar is something I crave. They also have small treats that seem to rotate during the year - buckeyes around the winter holidays, chocolate dipped strawberries sometimes in warmer months, made from scratch granola bars by the register some days that are delicious and great for a small snack.
Atmosphere is attractive, as it is a nice downtown location with large windows looking out at the street, lots of dark wood, a few large comfortable chairs, free wifi. At times they seem a bit understaffed, but that seems to have improved since the kitchen closes now at 2pm. The staff is also very friendly and will probably know you by name once you've been in a few times. All in all, I'm very happy they decided to put their second location so close to my office, I will continue to be a regular for coffee and the occasional baked good or breakfast or soup.
I've been here several times over the last few months. Each time I've been there the employees seem inexperienced and tacky. The lady helping me had no idea what the specials were and lacked the dignity and manners of a professional. :/. Maybe things will get better in the future. Also the decor is more "cutesy coffee shop" and not real stylish....strikes me once again as slightly tacky. If the prices were a little lower, help was friendlier, and atmosphere was a little more quality then I'd be a fan!
Review Source:My daily stop for the best in coffe, foods and service. DownTown South Bend got lucky with Main Street Coffee House decided to open a 2nd location here! I have also been to the Nappanee location and it's just as good.
Their baked good (are made in the little kitchen on site) are AMAZING and worth every penny. Â They roast their own coffee and it's great serving brewed, latte, cap, blended and everything between. If you like smoothies they have those too some with syrup and some with fresh fruits.
The staff is SUPER friendly. I am there sometimes for morning coffee, and breakfast just to return for lunch. They offer great daily specials. All the food is fresh and light, the soups are simply the best around.
Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to Main Street Coffee House!
