It's takeout only but hey I wouldn't want anyone to see me pig out on this delicious food. My boyfriend is the exception, lol.  We tried the smothered chicken, fried chicken, mash & gravy, mac & cheese, greens and peach cobbler. Two sides are included with main dish. The majority of the meal was good. The cobbler and cornbread were acceptable. I don't think anyone could top my mother-in-law's  cobbler.  The cornbread was dry and kind of hard. Nevertheless, it's not a deal breaker. I have a few soul food restaurants that I frequent and I will absolutely add Mama Lou's to the list.
Review Source:Mama Lou's has some good soul food, like fried chicken, collard greens, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, etc. They have smothered pork chops on Wednesdays and Saturdays too, but unfortunately, I was too early and they weren't prepared yet. I definitely want to go back and try them, because the fried chicken was great! I got it to go and brought it back to work, and I luckily have Cholula at my desk, which made the chicken even better. This definitely beats the nearby Subway and Jimmy John's.
Review Source:This place is basically takeout only- they have 4 or so bar stools you could eat at, I chose to take my meal with me... When I got home and opened the container I just knew I had died and was now in soul food heaven lol. seriously though, I have been on a HUNT for the perfect soul food joint and after 3 (or 8) restaurants I am happy to announce ''MY SEARCH ENDS HERE''! I ordered beef ribs, mac n cheese, & greens. I won't even attempt to describe the perfection that those ribs are- I can't think of the words right now. Mama Lou's (or rather her children or grandchildren- whoever they were) knows soul food! And the prices are reasonable.
Review Source:I have now taken food to go from this restaurant many times, and they always have the friendliest servers! They get excited when new cornbread is made, and every meal comes with free cornbread for dessert.
They still tweak the menu from time to time to adjust for cooking up the right portions on specific days, but I don't stray away from my side of greens and mac & cheese anymore since everything else looks like they haven't been touched in the last few weeks.
There's really not much around this area, and it sure beats subway!
This is the place to go! Â I am getting hungry just writing this review! Â So good. Â Warm and friendly service - fresh, tasty soul food. Â You can eat there, but this is "take out" dinner for my family from time to time. Great menu. Â Great dishes. Â You can't go wrong. Â Don't forget the peach cobbler for dessert!
Review Source:So what's a poor white girl from the burbs doing in Bronzeville? Â Never you mind! Â But I'm glad I was, if only for the opportunity to experience this dee-lite-ful little place. Â Though I've never had "soul food" before, I can't imagine it would get much better than this. The smothered pork chops were quite tasty and I really enjoyed the mac & cheese which was actually BAKED without that runny orange goop that most people think is what the cheese should be like. Â I'm not a mashed potato eater, but gave them a try and finsihed my portion. Â Now, cornbread...... Â Obviously I'm no expert and used to the sticky sweet stuff carried by chain food places. Â This was NOTHING like that, and I'm not sure that was a good thing. Â But everything else was hot, hearty and made for a real "stick to your ribs" type of meal. Â If I'm ever back in the neighborhood, I'll be sure to drop in again.
Review Source:Me and my hubby recently went to this place thinking this was going to be a blow you out the water soul food place... well I was wrong but I want to be fair and give you the pro's and con's.
Pro: The place was clean and the worker sanitary, I like how the menu look, The woman at the register was very nice, friendly and accommodating.
Cons: The macaroni was OK but I've had better there was a lack of cheese flavor small amount of seasoning or salt and no pepper at all also the macaroni was overcooked, the collard greens was cool but i like my greens mixed because sometimes collards are just bitter sometimes, my corn muffin was hard and very tough and burnt, the smothered chicken was OK the fried chicken was a lil tasty but the skin wasn't really crunchy it was kinda soggy. They had the food under food lamps and the food looked dried out and not very appetizing I had a taste for peach cobbler but the cobbler didn't have any crust!, also this restaurant don't have a lot of choices so if you just like chicken, fish and that it with a few sides then check it out but this place really need to add more to the menu and the flavor otherwise i would think this was a chain restaurant. I just wish I experienced what everyone else was commenting about this restaurant...
Oh Smothered Fried Chicken Yo !!
so we went to Bronzeville for the afternoon, and my partner had bookmarked this place to try, and oh so glad he did
now don't let this place fool you it is very small with almost no seating, most people get it and go but there is a bench along the window with about 5 or 6 stools so we ate  there
we both got the Smothered chicken as it was just swimming in gravy you knew it was gonna be good and juicy too, I got the Mac N Cheese very tasty and I also got the green beans had a little turkey neck up in there for extra flavor
a little hot sauce on the side for my chicken, oh yeah and ask for a wet nap as your fingers are gonna be sticky as you get all up in that Chicken and do momma proud and clean your plate
they were all out of bottled water that day or they would of gotten 5 stars but at least they had Pepsi in stead of Coke
we will be going back and soon
This is the first time I have ever been there and I was not disappointed! Â I had the chicken wings and catfish. Â Both were terrific. Â Catifsh was fried with a cornmeal crust and was great. Â It wasnt overfried and the fish was fresh and meaty. Â The wings were also very good. Â Fried with a golden crust and not over battered. Â Wings were the right size and seasoned well. Â For the sides, I had mash potatoes and collard greens and creamed spinach. Â Potatoes were creamy and the spinach was with fresh spinach. Â Yummy! Â The cafeteria style place also had good moderate prices.
Review Source:This is some of the best soul food I've had in a long time. Â I had the smothered chicken with collard greens and macaroni and cheese. Â The collard greens have smoked turkey in them, so for you none pork eaters you will enjoy them. Â To top it off I Â finished with the peach cobbler. Â I am in love:) Â When I first discovered this place, I went three days in a row. Â Check it out, you won't be disappointed:)
