Their fries alone would give them four or five stars, but overall, a three will suffice.
I've come here twice since my college bff lives so close. The first time I got their Italian beef, which was pretty good! But the price point is quite high, especially since the second time I visited the place I got a cheeseburger which was so obviously from a frozen packet it was a bit off-putting to pay $8 for a meal.
I'd probably visit again, just not for their burgers.
Man-Jo-Vin!? Man-Jo-GEM!
So, Sunday we were hurting a bit. A tad (VERY) hungover on a rainy Sunday with no groceries in our house...I decided it was time to make our debut at neighborhood mainstay, Man-Jo-Vin. I'd walked by many times, but never quite understood the place...but now I do. NOW I DO.
It's localized "fast food" in all its glory. Chicago style hot dogs, chili dogs, tamales (a Tamale boat is a tamale in a hot dog bun, what!?), fries, shakes, pizza puffs...you are craving American junk food? They've probably got it.
I tried to be relatively good and ordered the jumbo chicken sandwich. Besides the mayo, it was probably a pretty safe choice. Marinated and cooked fresh, topped with lightly grilled onions, tomato and lettuce and placed atop a lightly toasted bun. We both opted for massive Diet Cokes. Bill rang in at just about $8. Not too shabby! My guy tried to say he didn't want anything, but then proceeded to eat half of my sandwich. He also commented that it was surprisingly good for the somewhat bland nature of a grilled chicken sandwich.
What would I come back for? A chocolate shake. A tamale boat. The Chicago style dog combo (TWO!) for under $5. Other things. Whenever I'm hungover again.
The place has history (check the pictures on the walls) and a sense of humor (see also: pictures on the walls). The staff was courteous and though not jumping to help me, were certainly adequate. The space is clean with 4 or so booths/tables to sit and enjoy your food and we were joined by a group of little leaguers with their dad (rainout!) and a pair of older gentleman. Everyone wins and Man-Jo-Vin!
*Not open late.
*Does accept credit cards.
*Easy street parking surrounding (watch for rush hour limits)
*Fairly cheap for the 'hood!
I'm surprised at how much I liked it...in this part of town a good lunch option can actually be a bit tough, but this place has its program on lock down.
Now someone please send me a tamale boat on the double!
I had heard really good reviews of this place, so I popped in to give it a whirl. Â As other reviewers have mentioned, the staff seems very catatonic, not able to display even the slightest sign of emotion whatsoever. Â You won't get small talk, a friendly greeting and even a hint of a smile. Â To me, this is somewhat off-putting and makes me wonder what the back story on this place is and why these drones are staffing the front counter as if they are in mourning. Â
Beyond this, the food is very delicious. Â French fries are out of this world. Â The Italian beef sandwiches are just as good as many others you'll find across the city. Â Burgers and dogs are also done very professionally for a grill joint. Â I just wish the workers were a bit more personable and friendly. Â It would make things much less awkward and much more enjoyable.
This place has a great story going all the way back to the 50s, but honestly....I'm focused on the present when it comes to the food.
$4.99 daily special for a hot dog & soup. Â For the quality, its a total bargain. Â Tasty hot dog (loaded), incredible fries & decent chicken noodle soup. Coffee was a bit watered down, but maybe I got a bum pot...no biggie.
Next time, the home made shakes....
Really nice, high-quality fast food. Hand-cut fries, fresh burgers, and good shakes. They also have some interesting things on the menu like a tamale in a hot dog bun with grilled onions...
For fast food, very good! Priced accordingly (higher than normal fast food but not unreasonable).
Ok....Nanny talking here. So, I took my little ones to this quaint little "mom and pop" stop on our way hme from our "let the kids go crazy and wear themselves out" session at the park today, for lunch. And, all I can say is  these fries were PHENOMENAL!!! Real homemade fries with the very healthy skin still intact...fried to perfection! Burgers! Need I mention the burgers!!!!???  My two little ones gobbled them up do fast my head spun! Strawberry shake was delish! I will be coming back for the recommended chicken sandwich! I can't wait!
Review Source:I really wish I didn't like this place. Its a family run place. I can only imagine what its like at their family reunions. Dull and lifeless is the only way I can describe these people. The are absolutely the void of any personality. You would think after a over year of frequenting a small establishment  week after week that they may actually acknowledge us? Nope. Would it kill you to smile or be the slightest bit personable?
Well as mush as I despise visiting this freak show of sandwich making zombies,  they do have really good food. Just like their sign says "Just good food" They really mean it. That is ALL that it is.
I have searched high and low for a better Italian beef sandwich and I could not find one. I wanted to, really I did. I have been to burger joints with so much personality the owner would  come out from behind the counter and give you a hug. Unfortunately a hug , didn't make their sandwiches any better.
So, if you are looking for a good burger or Italian beef, this is the place but may I suggest take out....
What's there not to love about this corner burger-and-shake shop in Roscoe Village? The food is great, the service is wonderful, and it has such a small-neighborhood feel that you forget you're in the middle of a city. A very popular place for families with small children, but I like it because it is a great hangover cure. This place is an institution!
Review Source:Hungry and headed to a dart bar that had no food, I was looking for a good burger without having to spend $15. Out in the wilderness of Roscoe VIllage, I knew my choices were limited. When I saw the neon light signaling Vienna Beef Hot Dogs, it was like seeing a magical pool of water in the proverbial desert materialize, only this time it was real!
The furniture was new, the booths were without slash marks or graffiti that mark more uncivilized parts of the city. I perused the menu and there were hot dogs, italian beefs, burgers, shakes, and all sorts of goodies including corn dog and pizza puff. I decided on a double cheeseburger combo for $7.25 and tax which made it about $8.
I sat and waited and there were some kids playing in the background and some other people who ordered too. Food came in short order and I took my food to go. Once I settled into the bar up the street, I unraveled a pretty delicious cheeseburger with grilled onion, which was a pleasant surprise. The cheese seemed like the kind used with cheese fries but I was down for it. There was no ketchup with my friends, but I didn't much care. Â Overall good value for what I got, nothing otherworldly but very convenient.
I realize that this is primarily a hot dog joint, and I owe them a return visit for that much, but the burgers aren't anything beyond a basic fast food experience. Â
My double cheese was absolutely slathered in ketchup, mustard, and long cooked onions. Â It's difficult to eat a burger in a dignified manner, but especially so when you've got onions hanging way out of your mouth. Â My preference, tastewise, is chopped raw onions, but that's also a much simpler option for not wanting to look like you're wolfing down a zebra on the Serengeti, too. Â
The fries were excellent. Â Crispy and full. Â I'll be back for the dog.
We stopped here yesterday for lunch while out Geocaching. The burgers and fries we had were excellent. The fries were nice and hot, crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. The burgers were tasty and hot!
This is not a typical hot dog / burger stand. It is clean and well lit. The bathrooms are so nice you could think you were in a much more upscale place. The prices are not upscale though, so it was really a nice experience.
I was at the old Man-Jo-Vin many years ago. It had more of the type of atmosphere I like (typical hot dog joint), but this place blends in very well with the surrounding neighborhood and suits the clientele.
Great Chicago-style hot dogs and polish sausages, outstanding pineapple shakes, and some of the best fries around!
Service can be slow sometimes, but it's definitely worth the wait. Â Seating can be tight during normal meal times, but outdoor seating is available during the warm months.
Went to Man-Jo-Vins for my second time today. I ordered a chili dog and bought my boyfriend a gatorade out of the cooler. It was quite as cheap as other reviewers have said. It was $6 for just those two items. To my surprise, the cashier decided to give me a small basket of fries for free.
My chili dog was tasty and sloppy as it should be. The fries were crisp and not too greasy. I want to go back to try a chocolate malt!
you are looking for a good burger under $5. Â corporate fast food is out of the question. Â cozy up to man-jo-vins, a north side burger/dog/beef landmark. Â it's been around a long time, and when they rebuilt it, we thought it was going to change. Â luckily we were wrong!
i call this "naughty food." Â cause it's SO good and SO cheap. Â i LOVE the double burger with cheese, grilled onions, pickles, mustard & ketchup. Â it's like $4.50! Â i'm not a dog person, but my hubs always gets a dog with the burger. Â must be good cause he's picky. Â yesterday we tried the home made soup-it was awesome!
and the same owners for decades. Â very friendly fast service. Â i love this place. Â i don't want to, but i do.
Sometimes you just need your grease!
My man and I were pretty bummed when the original closed down and was knocked down. We used to live across the street and the smell of the place would make us drool.
We moved away from there maybe 2 years ago and every time we drove by we'd check the space. We were delighted when they finally reopened!
Best fries in the city! The rest of the menu is too. I think the prices may be a teeny bit higher than other beef joint in the city but such is the way of Roscoe Village.
We don't go there nearly as often as we used to but like I said, sometimes you just need grease!
The line at Hot Doug's was too long. Â This has left me still a HD's virgin. Â If they always have that line, I probably will continue to be a virgin. I am not interested in ridiculously long crappy foreplay no matter how good the final orgasm will be.
Moving on. Â I was all depressed after HDs and drove around looking for a something to fulfill my craving. Â Man Jo Vin's provided me with a strawberry malt, french fries, 1 Chicago dog, and 1 corn dog. Â It was a very good quickie.
Not your average diner...Especially since the name doesn't end in diner like the rest--nor anything easy to pronounce. Â Man-Jo-Vin, no clue! Â Well that was until I read the Yelp rival's Centerstage bio. Â It only goes wayyy back to its 1953 origins when the brothers Manny (Man), Joe (Jo) and Vince (Vin) started it up. Â Now it has been completely remodeled and the only dineresque flares are in the tables, chairs, exposed aluminum and clock. Â
I was just looking for a quick/cheaper place to eat and almost passed MJVs up. Â The minute I bit into their hand-cut french fries, I was soooo glad I didn't keep driving. Â The fries come right out of the grease causing a crispy outside yet soft a potato-y interior. Â I finished them on my way home before I could even take a mouthful of my burger. Â My bill at the register also surprised me with a 1/2 pound burger (which looks like a full pound on a bun) with the works, plus the delicious fries for only $5.50! Â That's a steal!!! Â My new favorite place; especially during Halloween time when the workers dress up with face paint and all.
I have been there twice. Â The prices were too high, the cooks move slower than molasses, and the fries were excessively greasy.
I figured for a hamburger joint, they would be fairly fast on a take-out order. No. Â They moved like molasses, bumbling leisurely around the grill. Â I waited 20 (literally) minutes for a veggie burger and fries once. Â I watched them serve other people who got there after me, before they even started on my order. Â I figured I should phone it in next time, so I asked for a menu, but they don't even have one. Â
As far as atmosphere- When I walked up, the outside of the place is stroller city.  The inside was packed with children.  I am sorry to be a hater, but I HATE screaming children running amok.  If your baby starts violently wailing, do you ignore him and  just sit there and finish your hot dog?  Apparently so.  I finally got my overpriced food, and darted out the door.
Rode past this place for the last couple of months on the bus and never saw it. Â I was just walking around the neighborhood today for lunch and wanted something from some place different as there are not a ton of lunch places that are walkable.
I went in and was greeted by 2 pleasant women. Â So I ordered a Hot Dog and a large chili to go. Â The service was very quick, I walked down to the corner and back and my food was ready.
The hot dog was plump and covered in the requested mustard and onions. Â Their fries seem to be hand cut and were fresh and hot.
The chili came in a large bowl and was also very good...your typical diner type chili.
With my limited options I will be back but not because of convenience but also because the people were friendly and the food was good.
If any of you think this is a "newer" addition to the neighborhood, then you must have not lived in the neighborhood that long. This place has been around for ages, it just that the original was torn down a few years back, and rebuilt and reopened recently. Â Really shows how long some of you folks have really been around. Â ANYWAY... great greasy fast food. I love the hand-cut fries and the burger w/ everything (ask for mayo & relish too) is fantastic. Sure, it's not a Kuma's burger, but who's comparing.
Review Source:Dude, what kind of name is Man-Jo-Vins?? It sounds like a Chinese restaurant with crappy Kung Pao Chicken. Well regardless, it's not Chinese... it's a newly opened hot dog stand type place with a few booths and some counter seating. There may be no fortune cookie for you, but what you can get is a corn dog, cheeseburger, italian beef, italian sausage, grilled cheese sandwich, gravy bread (still haven't figured out what that even is), cheese fries, soft-serve ice cream, and on and on as long as you're maintaining a 'junk food diner' type of mentality.
It's good greasy fare and pretty much all we have to offer in the way of encased meats now that Hot Doug has moved West. A small caveat though... their 'Chicago Hot Dog' doesn't boast the typical neon relish that usually scares my intestines to tears anyway. That shit just ain't natural (like a hot dog is?). But it does come with celery salt, sport peppers, dull green relish, tomatoes, onions, mustard and a pickle - oh yeah and a small serving of the fresh cut fries. Not bad for hosting a hangover even if I don't get a fortune cookie.
I stopped in Man-Jo-Vins today, a newer addition to my neighborhood, for a quick and tasty mid-afternoon lunch. The space is small, but mostly clean and cute (think simple retro chairs and booths) and the staff is friendly and fun.
I ordered the Chicago style jumbo 1/4 lb. hot dog which came with a small order of hand-cut fries. The dog was juicy and flavorful, and the fries were fantastic. I love fries that aren't so crispy or greasy that they lose their potato-ness, and these fries tasted like seasoned strips of potato. Fries like these are to find, so I'm grateful that they exist in my neighborhood. Or maybe I shouldn't be...too many fries equals too much belly...
Anyway, I'll definitely be back to Man-Jo-Vins for their soft serve ice cream, to try out their Polish sausage, and maybe even sample their Italian beef. Except I'll have to go early--they're never open later than 8pm, which in my opinion, isn't late enough--especially since the food they serve would be the BEST drunken antidote on a late Saturday night.
Welcome to the neighborhood!
