I want to like this place, I really do. The Irish nachos are pretty good and the quesadilla, though lacking in spice, is decent the service is abysmal. As a bar food lover I expect delicious greasy food, long waits, and a full stomach. With mccanns expect that experience never to happen. You can stand in the front and envision an invisible cloak over you because the chatty severs at the end of the bar do not give a damn that you're there. Dont expect a table. In my three visits I was able to enjoy a meal the first time but I must've accidentally walked out of the house the next two times because nothing happened. Mccanns I give up on you.

Great pub food.  Usually I place an order to go, but sometimes if the company I'm with wants to have a drink or two, then I will eat inside.  The Steak Tidbits are my favorite on the menu, tender pieces of steak with cheesy garlic bread.  Mmmm, so good.  I also love their loaded nachos and the cajun wings are good too.

I do not drink so don't have an opinion of the bar service.  There is a pool table and dart boards which makes it unique.  The place is a little small, so it tends to get cramped, and there seems to always be one or two obnoxious morons who like the sound of their own voice there, but otherwise it fulfills its purpose of being a small local pub which just happens to have great food.

Has a good selection of beers (mostly bottles) that change every so often. Good for grabbing some food and watching a game. 4 Stars cause they don't have HD Tv's, they're happy hour specials usually only include Bud and Coors light, and can be a little overcrowded to hangout in on a Fri or Sat night.

I dig this place, they got darts and pool tables and the staff is pretty cool. One of the girls is kind of a bitch and thinks she;s really cool but whatever, I don't stay long when she's there.  The beer is good, the burgers are good, the wings are pretty good, there ARE NO TOPLESS DANCERS though.  Still its a very good spot if you're looking to stay local or if you find yourself in Astoria on a Friday or Saturday night.

I end up here every few weeks to have dinner, beer and watch UFC. I love the atmosphere and the amount of TV's they have means there is not a bad seat in the house.
Love their food. You get a good portion and the waitress will keep coming with the beer!
As I never venture in on 'non-UFC' nights Im not sure what its like. But I would say add more seating at the back where the pool tables are!

Beer-Chicken-Beer-UFC. What more do you need?

Love this place. Melissa the bartender is the greatest ever. Actually all of the staff are friendly and very helpful. I used to live in queens and frequent this place all the time. Great bar food! Great drinks and great value!

Came in on a Thursday night cool spot, great specials thru out the week. Staff is all female so the bar top was full of 40+ males.  Wings were bad as in no bueno, but did discover that Tabasco green and blue cheese make a great combo. I'm sure they are great spot for 12am to 4am.

Popped in here with my running buddy for some food before we ran around the park (we never made it running...thanks for asking).  Our food was awesome and the waitress was very friendly.

The prices and portions are fair, fair, fair. I only wished we had gotten some beer!

Ahh McCanns pub, where do i start....I have only been in this place a few times when i was visiting astoria for a week, but it was the closest bar to where i was staying so i ended up in there multiple times.

Let me start by saying this is the type of bar, where a group of us can take tequila shots at 10AM without getting any strange looks from anyone. Its almost as if that is a perfectly normal thing to happen in this classy establishment.

The bouncers..ohh the bouncers..I had the pleasure of meeting two different bouncers at this pub. Bouncer #1 took the liberty of examining my ID for a good 5 minutes. I have never seen anything like it. He was flicking and bending it to check the structural integrity, holding it up to the light to check its HOLOGRAPHIC integrity as well as making sure it had the adequate Virginia color scheme, and then cross referenced it to myself, just to be sure it was really me. I thought this whole charade was pretty hilarious. This man takes his job VERY SERIOUSLY.

Bouncer number 2, on a different night, this guy wore a shirt that was entirely to tight, in order to show off his MANLY biceps, and had long blonde hair, almost as if he was trying to pull off the "Clay Matthews"  look. He also checked our IDs very closely, but did not have nearly as impressive of an ID checking procedure as bouncer #1. This guy sent the message "nobody fucks around in McCanns while im on duty"  And let me tell you, everyone drinking at McCanns that night was on their best behavior. Job well done, bouncer #2.

I thought McCanns pub was a laughable bar, but all in all its not that bad. Not anything great, but not bad either.

I used to frequent this place often, but over the years its gone down hill. My first gripe with McCann's is the televisions, which at this point are out dated. For a destination "Sports Bar" they really could use an upgrade. TV's are small and low definition, and the largest screen, a projector, isn't much better. For a place that is often packed by locals, its disappointing that they don't replace them.

I like the free wifi, which more establishments should have. Also the food is pretty solid, except for some of the more recent changes/additions. This place is good in the winter, but I wouldn't recommend going on a warm bright day, there aren't any windows, none. Without them  it's so dark I nearly tripped over a stair venturing in on nice spring day.

Beyond this I'm surprised, having been so often, that I wasn't provided more buy backs. Of course that's neither here, nor there. Lastly, their main bouncer, who's been there for quite some time (hmmm...how do I keep this g rated) is a real stick in the mud.

I must've been delirious from all that high altitude hiking earlier in the day, but I came in here, sat down, and I ordered a salad! Whoops! that wasn't the plan. I was ready for their heart-stopping thick-ass pub burger with extra cheese, extra bacon, and extra greasey juice. Yum!!!!

Well it turns out that when you're on some sorta high, each next decision builds upon your previous one. I was building on a theme there. I guess hiking got me so excited, I wanted to taste it in my mouth. Now, if I had saw a cow during my hike, I may have opted for the pub burger. Alas, no cow sighting during my hike. Although there was no chicken sighting either, but that didn't stop me from topping my salad with chicken. The waitress lady winking at me helped that decision a lot (good job on that upsell Stacey).

Truth be told though, I didn't really choose the salad. The salad chose me. I remember asking quite a few foodies in my past dining adventures, "what's your favorite vegetable?" And, on an alarming number of occasions the response I received was something that I have never tried before, roasted beets. I just saw it on the first page, and I didn't want to look any further into the menu. It was a Roasted Beets Carpacio Salad with baby greens, red onions, goat cheese, and toasted almonds tossed in a balsamic viniagrette.

It was an amazing salad. The beets had a woodsy note to them, almost like wild mushrooms. But, then they are juicy too (think cranberry sauce), so they offset the texture from the grilled chicken. The different textures really melded well together. There was the dry leafy greens drizzled with the tart viniagrette dressing, woodsy & juicy beets offsetting & complementing the lean grilled chicken, crunchy almonds, crunchy red onions, and soft smearably crumbly goat cheese. And, then of course, with each bite, you can mix up those flavor and texture profiles as you like by how you combine them. Ingenius! It was pretty too. It looked like a christmas tree in my bowl (with grilled chicken as ornaments).

I came here with some peeps, enjoyed some good brews and a great eating experience through a wonderfully designed salad.

I have been to this place a few times now.  I like the atmosphere, the staff is friendly and you get served quickly.  The food is good.  I have gotten a wrap and wings, and both were delicious.  They have pool tables in the back, which is fun if you are just looking for a relaxing night.  I will definitely go back.

Definitely a solid bar. Haven't really left the neighborhood in over a week, due to the hurricane and finally stumbled into McCanns. I've lived 2 blocks away for or about 8 months now and every time I pass by, I just think to myself "god this place must be a dump"

I was really pleasantly surprised last night. Yea there were a few old men with 2 teeth but for the most part the crowd was great. Young locals, mixed in with some older regulars. They also have great specials, last night it was a flight of any 4 beers for $4.50....Nice.

I think I've found my neighborhood bar.

Nice local pub right down the block from me abode.  Buy backs are always nice and they have some kind of special going on most of the time.   People watching is a plus and minus at this place :).

Although it's typical bar food, I have to say that they do have REALLY good wings.  Don't get the quesadilla though - they're a hot, sweaty, nasty, greasy mess.

And try desperately to take over the jukebox and play instantly whenever the girls that comes in play the ENTIRE Adele album followed by the ENTIRE Rihanna album while singing at the top of their lungs... (or just leave - I know the servers want to when this happens).

i really like McCann's, as it reminds me of one of my favorite places in Long Beach, CA:  Legends. i first came in nearly 3 years ago because it was the only place i could find to watch a San Diego Chargers game. then my new coworker and i started coming after work, since we were clocking out after midnight on a routine basis. we just wanted to unwind! and watch our baseball teams!  then my stupid ex-boyfriend and i would come in to hang out where no one we knew was around. he was a jackass like that.  now i just come in because i like it, damn it.

great beer specials.  every dish i've tried has been yummy (last night it was the chicken tidbits on a hero..... DELISH). the bartenders have always been super cool. i love that it's open til 4am (this California girl *still* isn't used to that!).

all in all, McCanns is a delight.

I've been a few times to this bar when grabbing dinner in Astoria.  Cool, laid back, relaxing atmosphere.   Prices are very reasonable- $5 pint drafts or you can upgrade to a 20 oz for a buck more.

I was there the other night catching the Rangers playoffs game.  You'll see mostly locals who you see at this pub.  They have a strip of flat screens where you can catch all the local live games.

Definite spot to chill after a days work.

The owner of this place refuses to pay for a HDTV signal/network box, so still no HDTV even though the joint has televisions capable of carrying the signal.  If you want to watch games on proper screens, go to the Irish Rover off Steinway.  It's much much better

6/22/13: The owner has still not upgraded to HD in the bar, and despite the great staff, management needs to get their act together.  I did get a case of food poisoning from eating some undercooked chicken wings the other week.

Seeing as how I've lost count of how many times I've been here (and, thanks to their strong drinks, MORE than lost count of how many times I've left here!) figured I should prob. throw my two cents in.

They recently revamped their menu and changed some of their management. So far, so awesome. Whereas a few months ago I would say "McCanns would be much better if they just gave up on the food concept and stuck with the drinks", now I can honestly say I get cravings for their beet salad with shrimp. And these aren't tiny typical bar fare shrimp, either.

They can def. get over crowded with not enough seats, but if you wait it out a bit usually spots will open up at the bar. And I don't know if they're still doing this, but we've had to pay an entry fee in the past when a pay-per-view game is on (ok, understandable) but then they give you funny money which you can't get change for so you end up paying $10/drink...just odd.

Props and cheers to the chef, who is very friendly and has done shots with my friends and I on a couple occasions. And to the bartenders, just keep doing what you're doing and I'll keep showing up and forgetting I did by the end of the night!

This is your typical neighborhood sports bar/pub with several tvs.  Not a bad spot to catch a game, but not place I'd go to if I didn't live fairly close.  They have all your supermarket beers, but not much of selection of micro brews.

The food is hit or miss.  So far these are what I've tried here:

Buffalo wings - average.  Not the best, not the worst.  Medium sauce is quite hot.

Buffalo chicken sandwich - Terrible.  Just don't get it.

Buffalo bites - Damn good!  Imagine a really good slice of buffalo chick pizza w/o the pizza part, and yes I like buffalo sauce if you can't tell already.

Fries - Good.  Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside.

Overall not a bad place to start off the night, but not somewhere to come out of your way for.

I'm new to the neighborhood and recently stopped in to check out the local irish pub watering hole.  Gotta say I was very impressed.  Lots of TV's, standard beer selection and a friendly wait staff made for a good time.  I didn't try the food but the beers were cold and cheap!

I'll be back in the near future.

I wish I could give this place another star.  Food was good.  Beer was okay.  I asked for a pickleback and the bartender said, not so politely, NO.  I asked if they had pickles and she said yes.  I asked if they could just get some pickle juice out of the bucket.  Again, NO.

I was with friends having a good time otherwise I would have gone somewhere else.

I live a half block away so I decided to become somewhat of a regular here.  Great selection of beers on tap, and am especially a fan of pale ales.  Sometimes you get a fun crowd and sometimes it's tame, but I always have a chill time here whenever I need a drink and don't want to go far.  Sometimes I wrap up my Saturday nights out by going here before heading home.

The bar food is decent.  After a few beers anything fried and cheesy is good.

The only thing that drives me absolutely nuts is that all of their TVs are not broadcasting in high definition, so you're basically getting a stretched out picture on all their screens.  Seriously, please get it fixed.  It makes watching games there really terrible, so that's really my only complaint.

I can't say much about this place since I was just visiting a friend in the neighborhood.  We stopped for a beer.

Service was quick.  Friendly.  Atmosphere was welcoming though ambiant noises were quite loud.  Nice layout.  Would stop by again when I'm in town.

Having recently moved to Astoria, I am in search of my favorite local pub and grub fave. I have to admit that I really like the vibe at McCann's.

The appetizer menu has a great variety of options, but it is the flavor of their Cajun chicken wings that stands out. The sauce is perfectly spiced and not overbearing.

I have also ventured to order their Benedict Burger, which was awesome! 10 ounces of beefy goodness. It's topped with bacon, cheese and is smothered in hollandaise sauce. I ordered it for dinner, but it may become my favorite brunch order on the weekends.

Both times that I have been there I have had exceptional service from the waitstaff, Gretchen and Keri.

Great tunes on the jukebox, a dart board, pool table, and a multitude of televisions. I feel welcome here.

There's always one or more of the following at McCann's on a given night:

-A guy who's way too rowdy.

-A guy who keeps repeating stupid/annoying phrases in an attempt to be funny.

-A guy trying to bum cigarettes in the bathroom.

If you can avoid 2 of the above when you go to McCann's, you'll have a nice time. If you can't, at least you got a cheep beer out of it.

This was one of my first reviews and I feel like I didn't give it enough of a review, so I'm giving it another go.

Food: Great (except the wraps, they're no good) and relatively cheap.  I think it's better than your average pub grub.  They have a massive and extensive menu, so anyone can find at least a few things to choose from.  My favorite, still, are the buffalo bites (the sauce, the texture, everything is vundabar).

Drinks: Fantastic and cheap.  $5 for called alcohol (I think well is actually the same) and Wednesday night is ladies night, so it's half off everything.  They don't have a regular happy hour, but they have specials every day.  They have a few fruity mixed drinks which aren't bad, but nothing frozen, which I prefer when I'm going fruity.  Quite a few beers, too, according to my beer-drinking friends.

Atmosphere: Very fun, laid back and local.  Lots of Astorians and a lot of times you'll see one of the local fire houses here, if that interests any ladies... It's generally crowded, especially after 7:30/8 on week nights.  I rarely come on weekends, but it is crowded then, too.  I prefer the week nights.  There is a pool table in the back, which is free certain times of day.  Not a lot of tables, so get there early or be prepared to wait.  Lots of TV's and they usually have a few different games on.

Employees: Everyone is very friendly here, right down to the bus boys.  All easy to talk to and can answer all your questions about the menu.

McCann's was my first bar/pub experience in Astoria about 3 years ago and it is still at the top of my favorite's list.

I really like this place sometimes it does get to crowded but when I have a table I have a good time and I think its so cute they put a little sign that says "Gone for a Puff "on your table when you go outside.
I love that they have a pool table kinda sucks that they charge you $1.50 which isnt alot but I feel like it should be free.

Unfortunately it has progressively gotten worse over the years.  The food used to be good, but is barely edible these days.  The last time I had a wrap it was like eating cardboard.  Burgers with steak fries are still pretty good and have decent bud/miller lite beer specials.  Can get overcrowded and too noisy.  I prefer the Massapequa location as it has a much better vibe and a lot more space.  Kind've dark and gloomy inside.  They don't even give you the free beer wood chips anymore.

Ok for a quick beer, but outside that not one of my favorites any longer.  They need to step it up with other sports bars opening up around town.

It's a nice place to hang out on a weekday night and watch a baseball game. They have a couple of pool tables in the back. The back is a little isolated, but it gives it a relaxing feel.

The bartenders are good, and the waiters are above average.

This isn't really a bar to go to if you want to meet someone or mingle.

    Overall a good experience.

I got love for this place. I have been here on a few random occasions and each time I'm pleased. My roomie is moving back to our hometown this weekend so we went to grab a drink last night.

As we walk in we see that low and behold Wednesday is Ladies Night. Yeah half priced drinks for me : ) !  The bartender comes over quick to take our order and delivers our drinks promptly. $7.50 total for an amaretto sour and a blue moon....not bad!

I listen as the jukebox shifts from modest mouse to whitney houston to queen to beastie boys to carrie underwood. I then have to see how a mix as such is made so I scan the modern-looking jukebox to discover quite a variety.

I then grabbed the menu and I'm impressed with McCann's prices, quality, and selection of bar food. I recall having a pretty solid veggie burger here back in the day. So I'm tempted to come back to McCann's on another Wednesday for some more half priced drinks and a meal. If I had a local bar, this would be it.

Here are some points to note:
-You can play free pool (M-F 10am-5pm, Sundays 7pm-4am)
-Weekday drink specials (Wednesday's Ladies Night 8pm-1am)
    -Tasty bar food
    -Young crowd
    -Pleasant bartenders
    -Clean bar
    -The bathrooms are claustrophobic
    -Lots of TVs
    -Trivia
    -Happy Hour (10am-6pm)
    -$15 minimum for credit cards

    This place is pretty solid.

The service, the three or four times I've been, has been sub-par. The bartenders are typically chatting with regulars/significant others and my glass has typically sat empty for far too long.

That said, the food is pretty good, standard bar food- pretty decent wings and fries. Stick to the pitchers, as individual beers can be a bit pricey for the neighborhood.

    Still, a neighborhood go-to.

I hate to admit this, but I don't go out in Astoria very often.  I'm not proud to say it, there are some nice bars out here, but I'm a slave to Manhattan.  Maybe I'll change, but I'm not sure when.  So when I say McCann's is probably my favorite bar in Astoria, I might not be saying all that much.

But, I am saying it's a good bar.  The main room is a little small and gets packed when the place is busy, but there are plenty of tables and the bar is well staffed so you shouldn't have to wait long for a drink.  Darts and pool tables are in the back, and unlike a lot of places, the crowd is generally cool about giving people space to play.  Drinks are not too expensive and the beer selection is solid, but I usually stick with my standard Yuengling ($4.50 pint, $13 pitcher).

I don't really think of this place as a sports bar because the TVs are generally pretty small.  To me, a sports bar needs a good number of good sized plasmas before it's a place I'll go to just to watch a game.  On the other hand, it's a great place to watch a boxing or UFC PPV because they put the shows on every TV and never charge covers.  Having this place within walking distance from my apartment is wonderful for the bloodthirsty caveman that still exists deep in my soul.  The caveman who doesn't want to pay $20 to get into a bar when the stupid PPV is only $50 and then still have to pay inflated alcohol prices.

    Here's another thing said caveman likes about McCann's:  women come here.  And not just women willing to go to a place with sports on the TV with their guy friends, but groups of single women.  I remain amazed, but will never complain.  My last trip to McCann's is a good example.  My buddy and I started talking to a group of four girls.  One might as we have had boyfriend tattooed on her forehead, 1 was drunk and was about 1/2 beer away from drunk & obnoxious (drunkoxious?) but the other 2 were cool and had potential.  Until the following conversation;

Buddy:  So where are you from?
Drunkoxious Girl:  I'm from a small town between D.C. and Baltimore.
Buddy:  Baltimore?  That's the STD capital of America.  Remind me to never have sex with you.

Then when I tried to fix all this he got pissed that I wouldn't admit I had read Freakonomics and knew he was right.  Needless to say, end of potential.  But I do not blame McCann's for this, and I will be back.

I come here for football all the time in the fall/winter with a few friends.

One friend is a hardcore regular so the staff have gotten to know him, and consequently the rest of us. They are a little overworked (not enough of them) but have always been friendly. I agree with the other reviewers, buybacks used to be better, but we still get one or two those cute little wooden tokens for a free drink when we go.

The place is TINY but they have a lot of tv's with all the games on. Best deal on football Sundays are the Pitcher/appetizer sampler for about $16-17. The 3 or 4 of us usually split two samplers over the course of the afternoon/evening and then just get more pitchers after that!

It can get crowded since it's so small but it's a fun place to come watch the games if you are with a group and arrive early enough to get a table!

Walked into this bar on the recommendation of a friend.  If I only knew what I was walking into?!

So this place is having the bar's Christmas party, which means free top shelf open bar till 1030 (Thursday night, 9 pm entry).  But, it doesn't end there...then Santa walks our carrying all sorts of bar ware (t shirts, hats, pins, etc) and is handing it out to the crowd with his "elves".  This guy must've had 50 shirts to distribute.

But, it doesn't end there...Next, Santa walks around with wrapped presents.  He looks over directly at me and points.  A present is handed to me.  Being egged on by my friends, I unwrap the gift.  Staring me in the face is a brand new DVD player, for free.  Is that not ridic?!

As the party continued, bottled Brooklyn beers made an appearance.  God Bless McCann's.

Football and beer makes Marisa a happy girl.

Friends and I headed to Queens at noonish yesterday and found McCann's on a suggestion from a local.  Every -- and I mean EVERY -- 1pm game was showing on the thousand screens above the bar (ok, they have 12 or so, but it does literally feel like a thousand when you're inches away from the plasmas and sipping a pint).

Their $16 special will get you a pitcher of Coors/Bud and an app sampler big enough for 2 to share.  They also serve breakfast all day -- happy news for those of us that consider eggs & bacon the perfect companion to a Blue Moon.

I agree with Ryan G & Blake W.  This is a solid bar with better-than-average pub grub.  Any place that lets me sit for hours staring at the tv's until my eyes go blurry is a good find.

What a total waste of a beautiful Irish Pub.

This is a nicely appointed pub with above average food, 2 pool tables and ample space.  All signs point to a great local spot.

Problem is, the staff is awful.  I have gone their on numerous occasions and spent hours without ever getting comped one drink.  Also, it is not uncommon to wait for an hour plus for your meal to come out when you order it.  They may be pleasant, but they show no respect for repeat clientelle, which is what gives a pub it's character.

What does this mean?  It means that this is not a good local bar. period.  Despite all it's amenities, it lacks any kind of atmosphere that would make you want to come back again.  It's a real shame.

I agree with Ryan G. here.  Beggers can't be choosers with the bar situation around this part of Astoria.  McCann's is exactly what your average bar should be..  Reliable.  The food is cheap and tasty, the beer selection is acceptable and the bartenders are attentive.

If you're looking to improve your social/intellectual life via a bar scene...  (read: improbable)  look elsewhere.  :)

It's a bar..  enjoy it as such.

I will give them this:  McCann's has really above-average pub food, for really decent prices.  McCann's also has a good beer selection and attempts to inject fun into the place by having $11 beer-and-burger night and $3 drafts on NFL game days.

But the people who go here are horrendous for the most part.  Rude, obnoxious and with a very poor taste in music.  Or at least, that's all the juke box plays.  The bar is also very oddly set up, so that there's very little standing room and half the time you get your drink spilled on you as someone squeezes past you to go to the bathroom, which is inconveniently located in the basement.

I've had some fun watching NFL games here (most teams are represented at this diverse watering hole, including my beloved Cincinnati Bengals, and there's a surprisingly large Browns contingent for my Cleveland-raised boyfriend, too), and sometimes it's fun to play free pool on Sundays and grab a bite to eat, but other than that, steer clear of this place.

Too bad they don't deliver.  Then I could just get their food without having to set foot inside the place.
