I have no choice but to give this place 5 stars for being what it is....a fabulous large bar in the heart of Soulard with a ton of different bars to drink at and patio seating and nooks that should appeal to just about anybody. Â Get this.....they even are dog friendly!!!!! Â I was told by our bartender not only outside but inside during the winter..........two paws up for this!!! Â I am not the biggest Cajun food junkie so the menu is rather limited to me. Â I decided on the fish tacos they were approx. 10.00 and hubby had the gator and sausage wonton things...he loved loved loved them....
you know what I loved???? Â The bananas foster with ice cream and beignets. Â Wholly Molly was that desert fabulous. Â It was around 9.00 but big enough for two-four people easily.....Our bartender was professional and talented. Â I watched her make several drinks during my couple hour visit here and they used fresh muddled mint for the mojitos and seemed to mix and shake her cocktails with love and care.
This is a great place to go on a nice summer evening or fall even and partake of a few drinks...while listening to some nice live subtle acoustic guitar music.
Our favorite spot in ALL of St. Louis! Â The biggest, best, most fun patio around! Â Great food, too! Â The service is awesome! Â The bartenders remember our names, are always smiling and friendly! Â Molly's is our go-to-spot for a Saturday afternoon/evening!!!
Also, the free shuttle to Busch for Cards games is awesome!!!
Best damn patio around, great staff and amazing food and drinks.
Love the calamari as an app, bbq and spinach salad with strawberry dressing is wonderful, and if you like Mac n cheese, get it! Desserts here are amazing too.
Lindsey is a wonderful asset to Molly's team, keep her. Great live music keeps the atmosphere light and fun. Always a pleasure and memorable dining experience...probablty why I am a regular!
Well hello, fried green tomatoes. Where have you been all my life?
We went here for a friend's birthday get together. I had zero expectations because it was a last minute thing so I didn't have time to peruse the menu or look Molly's up on yelp. We were put in a small room to the right of the front door. Which was fine because we had a large group and were probably a bit loud. However, not as loud as the bachelorette party that was put in the room with us. So there's that.
The server was friendly and efficient. She got our orders out correctly and the checks separated appropriately. The drinks were a tad slow but not too bad.
The bf and I ordered an appetizer of BBQ Shrimp & Fried Green Tomatoes. They were seared shrimp with Molly's New Orleans style BBQ sauce and served over fried green tomatoes. The batter on the tomatoes was crispy and seasoned but not too greasy. They were so tasty. I've wanted great fried green tomatoes ever since I saw the movie, lol, and I finally had great ones at Molly's.
For our entree we both ordered Shrimp Pasta Ligurian. Which was sauteed shrimp in a spicy crushed red pepper and garlic olive oil, tossed with spinach and egg linguini, sun dried tomatoes, walnuts and feta cheese. It was good but not spicy at all and even though I like feta I feel that it didn't add anything to this particular dish.
I'm really giving this a 3 star based on other peoples food that I tried. There were some burnt tasteless sweet potato fries and some over sauced Parmesan Eggplant Napoleon. It was layered with cherry tomatoes, mozzarella and fresh basil. Then topped with marinara and Parmesan cheese. It had a bizarrely caramelized aftertaste and the eggplant had a weird spongy texture.
The prices were average to the low end of high but mostly ranged around reasonable.
I would definitely give this place another whirl.
Service was ...weak. They were clearing tables so we were told to sit out by the lobby. After they let us in (there were a lot of tables free), they forgot about us for a while before getting us a menu when we finally asked and then forgot about our utensils after bringing us food. However, the server did swing by after we ate and tried to explain a little more about the food so it evened out. This is the kind of place I wouldn't want to come when they're really busy- they seem overwhelmed easily.
However, the food was actually pretty good! Presentation was clean and everything was delicious, even the alligator which tasted like fried, slightly touch chicken. Worth trying. Jambalaya was not spicy but had good seasoning. The gumbo was rich and full of okra and sausage and the bowl was good to share, just enough as a tiny appetizer. Good food! They also forgot the fried oysters part of our order so they brought it out for free when we reminded them- I'm glad, because man, it was good! Fresh, well battered, definitely worth paying for (free's not bad too!)
This review comes after a long and fun "Ugly Christmas Sweater Pub Crawl" throughout Soulard. Â We went to a few bars before this one, so once we arrived we all had a little bit of a buzz going, so maybe that is a contributing factor to this review, but anyways... here it goes!
As we walk in, the door man gives us a piece of paper to join their text club, and if we do so we get a free shot. Â Right there they have already won the key to my heart. Â Free booze and me have been best friends since the beginning. Â This was my first time to Molly's and I was very impressed with the layout and overall feel of this place. Â It was so much fun. Â The DJ was I believe DJ Old Skool or something of the like, and he played nothing but sub 2000's dance and hip hop. Â Another key to my heart lies there. Â When you play some Montell Jordan, Ice Cube, 2Pac, and the like, I am a very happy boy! Â
We in fact had so much fun here that we skipped two of the bars after this one that we were supposed to go to in favor of more time here. Â They had a good beer selection as well, and they were very reasonable. Â I look forward to coming back here perhaps around Mardi Gras, or the next time I find myself in Soulard!
Really fun place to hang out and have some drinks with friends.  Got a little out of control the Friday night we went.  They were offering free shots to anyone who showed the bartender a text from Molly's on their phone.  I think people were being heavily over-poured.  I saw a fight and lots of people falling down.  We are in  our twenties and are used to a crowd like that.  But I know my parents would've left immediately. My friends and I sat by the fire right at the enterence.  The patio was nice. The bathrooms were pretty disgusting.  I think they need to have a little more crowd control.  But other than that, we will probably go back.  It was a nice place.
Review Source:Went back to Mollys Last weekend and the FOOD was fantastic....We had a special Fried Chicken Dinner.........it came with asparagus and Mashed potatoes..Yummy!!!
The desert was banana foster and bread pudding, two of our favorites... Â Service was great and price reasonable. Â I will go back again
Molly's is the type of place that makes Soulard great. Â After taking over their neighbor Norton's they have added a cajun menu. Â Southern treats line their menu, which borders on the expensive side. Â They offer up foodie delights, such as alligator rangoon, yum. Â The beers are relatively cheap and the service isn't bad. Â As far as atmosphere goes, there's an expansive patio that you'll rarely have a hard time finding a seat. Â On weekends they feature live music and as it cools down a bit, their fire pits get lit.
Review Source:Yelp was the origin on how I found Molly's. It's not a patio staple. It reminds me of the Old Mill Stream Inn in St. Charles and I loved that little gem. The fire pits and chillaxing mood is my type of place. I do not however like their lack of selection in beer. I look forward to going here in the future, IF they widen their selection.
Review Source:While sitting outside on a beautiful day prior to a Redbirds game is a real treat it's all about the food and that's where it fell apart for me.
I ordered the Crawfish and Shrimp Étouffée, rich dark roux with Louisiana crawfish tails and gulf shrimp on a bed of white rice and at $14.95 it seemed reasonable. It was totally uninspired and the most bland Étouffée I have ever had, what a disappointment.
My son had the Muffaletta, a classic New Orleans sandwich layered with kosher salami, capicola, mortadella, smoked provolone cheese and house-made olive salad. Served panini pressed or cold, he went with the panini and that was actually pretty good.
$100 later I left pretty unsatisfied with the food. They do offer a free shuttle to the Cards game which is a real plus and the lady driving the shuttle was awesome. I'll probably give it one more shot but go for a burger or sandwich next time,
I've been to Molly's for dinner and had a very good experience. So when I got tickets for a day game at Busch I thought I'd try Molly's for lunch and then take their FREE shuttle to the game. Call me stupid...why haven't I done this before.
First...they have a pretty good burger. I tried the classic cheeseburger. It was cooked to order and served up just like I expected. I had my choice of several sides and went with the sweet potato fries. Somehow they were gone before the burger. Hmm?
The bill came in at $8.74 without tip. (I just drank water.) Not bad. Then we walk over to their big comfortable shuttle and seven minutes later I'm standing in the stadium. Did I already mention this is a FREE shuttle. Let's see....what's the average cost to park for a Cardinal's game. I'm sure you can do the math.
Pick up was also a breeze after the game and we were back to Molly's in just a few minutes. I'm told they offer this service for Ram's and Blue's games too and I plan to use it again.
Their driver's name is Becky and she was very accommodating to everyone. You can tell she's havin' fun too.
Spectacular Alligator Rangoon. Â Crab cakes were so-so. Â Jambalaya had good flavor and a burn that crept up on you.
Orange Dreamsicle drink was creamier and less orangy than I would've expected. Â Good beer selection, my bf had the Delirium. Â Had to specifically request a glass glass instead of plastic. Â I guess they only use plastic on the patio.
Really lovely patio. Â Large but divided up nicely so it felt small and intimate in the area we were in. Â Had a great seat near the bar so we could watch the cardinals desimate the cubs while listening to live acoustic guitar that was really nice on a not too hot night.
Friendly, prompt service.
Bill was a little higher than expected, but we did have an appetizer and 2 entrees, drink and a beer. Â I think next trip we'll probably try sandwiches instead to alleviate that.
It saddens me to have to write this review. I had high hopes of having a great experience with some friends the night we went. The girls and I had planned a night of Karaoke at Molly's; but of course we wanted to grab a bite to eat since we were already there. We arrived around 7:45 and grabbed a table on the patio since we were told that it would be ok to do that. Once we sat, I kid you not, we waited for literally 12 minutes before anyone came over to say hello to us. We actually had to flag down a waiter and ask for menus. It was ridiculous. After we got out menus it took another 5 minutes for our server to come over to greet us.
I am not going to use a name in this review, but our server was awful and so slow! I ordered a beer (in a bottle) as did another one of the girls. The other 2 I was with ordered sangria's. Well, we waited and waited and waited. Finally our server came over (empty handed) and said that they don't have the ingredients to make the sangria; are you kidding me?!?! We waited for that? Where was my beer? I know you have a bottle of that at the bar, should I go get it myself? I could do that quicker than waiting on you to get it for me. I was really irritated because my beer finally arrived (the wrong beer may I add) about 10 minutes after I ordered it. No excuse for that; and it was semi warm, I assume it was sitting on the bar waiting to be delivered for that entire time. Once she did bring the drinks over she dropped them off and walked away...didn't even bother asking if we would like to order anything!
At this point I was irritated and so were the others. I felt bad since Molly's is in my neighborhood and I always talk so highly of it! That night was a fail. When our server walked by we flagged her down (for a second time) and asked if we could order some food! Seriously, she looked at us as if we were speaking a different language. I'm sorry, is it not ok to order food at the restaurant???? By this time it was already about 8:30! We had been there for 45 minutes and had just ordered!
The food came out quickly which was good because everyone was hungry. Our server came over a few minutes after the food arrived and I ordered another beer; luckily it came out quickly too. I am not sure what the problem was or why the service was so terrible that night. I'll be sure to avoid that server in the future...or maybe she was having a bad night? Who knows. I'm just a little disappointed in Molly's right now. I'm sure I'll go back for drinks another time, but I'm not sure if I'll try patio dining again.
One positive review of Molly's is that it is a great place for drinking out on the patio; their patio is seriously one of the best in Soulard!
I recently held my organization's dinner here after Market Grill closed. Â Molly's really came through for me on short notice. Â The room was nice, and the food was delicious. Â The staff was really helpful with getting our screen and projector set up for presentations.
I plan on coming to Molly's next year, but maybe getting a bigger room. Â The Private Dining Room was a little cramped with 30 people and a presentation set up.
Had a wonderful time here. Came on a Friday for an early dinner, it was nice and secluded inside. Bf and I ordered the alligator rangoon, since we were intrigued and had never had alligator. It arrived steaming hot - I cracked it open - absolutely amazing. Definitely recommend it.
I ordered the Eggplant Parmesean Napolean. I haven't eaten an eggplant parm I didn't like, and Molly's did not disappoint. I'm accustomed to a large lengthwise filet, so I was a little surprised when the Parm came and was cut width wise. Apparently napoleon means cut width wise. Regardless of the way it was cut, it was delicious. It was healthier than what I'm used to - less greasy and not as crispy. When I commit to Eggplant Parm, i've kinda dedicated myself to the idea that I'm getting crispy unhealthy deliciousness, so the slighty healthier deliciousness was a bit of a surprise.
Our waitress was also very friendly, and the service was great. Sometimes when it's slower, waiters tend to forget about you, but this was not the case at Molly's.
For those interested, the outside patio was popping (and smoky), so be warned!
Definitely excited to come back for round 2.
I've been to Molly's several times on Fri/Sat evenings on the patio out back, and always had a good time.
I liken it to a McGurks like experience, hold the mega crowd of frat holdover douche-bags. Â But I digress, that's not why I'm writing this review. Â Although it is a great place to get drinks outside.
Finally tried the restaurant and it was REALLY good! Â I love Cajun food, but this was good cajun... and the service was great, drinks were done right, and I really dig the interior of the place. Â I'll definitely be back for lunch and dinner, and to watch Cards games outside on a weekend.
I am a huge, HUGE fan of Molly's patio - it's much better when the weather's good and you can sit out there.
I've ended up at Molly's on a couple of different occasions with friends - once during the summer and once during the winter. Â Summer was infinitely better but winter was pretty entertaining too.
The food I can't speak to - I've only ever been there after dinner for drinks, but they can do those well, I tell you. Â When we ended up there over the summer it was great because it was a random Tuesday night, it was fairly late (maybe 9 PM or so), and the weather was perfect for hanging out on the sprawling back patio. Â To be honest, I didn't even know that patio existed, but I was instantly in love with it. Â
Picture this: pavers for the whole patio, a number of different tiers for different groups to mingle in, wrought iron chairs and tables, a bar to serve all patio goers exclusively, a little stage off to one side complete with live, semi-bad (but highly entertaining) local musician with a guitar AND cabanas! Â Yes, you read this right - there are what I can only deem "cabanas" on the patio of Molly's - there's just a few right at the far end but their large round booths with pillows and covered tops: that's a cabana in my world.
Inside the atmosphere's a little less spread out and relaxed and instead a little more cramped and relaxed. Â The tables are closer together, the bar's still equally as large, the bad musician is still there (just amplified in the closer quarters) and the cigarette smoke's less escapable. Â Yes of course, escapable is a word - I made it one.
It's still a totally fun atmosphere and perfect for a late night drink though - if you can opt for the patio outside - it's easier to have a conversation and be heard. Â But if you do end up indoors and need to get the stink of cigarettes out of leather (jackets or skirts, for instance), hang the offending leather item in a very cold place (either outside or inside a freezer). Â For some unknown reason it freezes the smell out - go figure. Â Handy tip to know though - I've employed it more than once since then. Â :)
This place is pretty cool. Â I've been more times in the summer because they have a really cool patio. Â This time I stayed inside since it was the middle of winter. Â One of my favorite bartenders from D's Place was guest bartending here during their "Bar Wars" contest. Â
A typical Soulard bar with exposed brick, Christmas lights, and beads adorning the walls. Â A DJ was there spinning some pretty cool tunes too. Â Drinks came fast and the crowd was fun.
Downsides... The bar is a shotgun style bar so moving around is a problem once it gets busy. Â My first drink came in a plastic cup. Â They had a limited supply of glassware. Â I hate drinking out of plastic... call me a snob. Â They're kitchen closed on Sunday very early... I think mid afternoon. Â I left drunk, but had to go elsewhere for food. Â The pizza at Tucker's down the road did the trick.
Not bad! Met up with some friends here last weekend for drinks (what else?), chatter, and a wee bit of dancing, if I remember correctly. Yeah. It was one of THOSE nights.
Anyway, I thought Molly's was pretty cool. Not my favorite bar ever, and definitely not a go-to for a night out, but I didn't hate it. The drinks were strong, it wasn't TOO crowded, and the music was cool. Top 40-ish stuff. Oh, and the DJ granted my request for 'Baby Got Back' almost immediately! Good times.
This review is one of the times that I wish Yelp had 1/2 stars. My experience was truly a A-OK+ visit. I'm sure after another visit or two I could easily be a fan. The food we had was great, what held the score back was the service. The service was just a little slow.
How we ended up at Molly's was a surprise to us both. We were driving around wanting some place new and being in Soulard - there was hardly a place we hadn't tried, so Molly's is where we ended up.
We ordered multiple appetizers to create a meal for two. As you will see, we went with a seafood theme. We started out with Tuna Summer Roll and Crab Cake. The Tuna Summer Roll was better then some I have experienced at a Sushi bar. The Crab Cake was moist and flavorful, not like one you'd get in Maryland, but good.
We also tried their BBQ Shrimp & Green Fried Tomatoes, as you can see it doesn't photograph well and the taste was similar. This dish did not impress us, Broadway Oyster Bar does something similar so much better.
The last two items I'll mention were the best by far. Molly offers, Alligator Rangoon, something I have never heard of before. I have eaten Alligator and love Crab Rangoon - so why not give it a try. It was very unique and I look forward to having it again. We also tried Baked Macaroni & Cheese which was the bomb. This m&c could be a favorite of mine easily.
Look forward to revisiting and see if I can't bump them up to a 4.
My wife and I ate here for lunch on a Monday afternoon last week during a visit to St. Louis. The patio is beautiful and I bet would be great for drinks in the evening. The place was very empty, so we had pretty attentive service.
I gotta say i am always a little apprehensive about seafood/creole cuisine in the Midwest, but our food was not bad at all. We ordered the BBQ Shrimp and Fried Green Tomatoes and the Jambalaya. The shrimp was fantastic, but the jambalaya was just meh (not bad, but didn't really stand out).
This is a review based solely on a Sunday brunch. I've never been here for the night life nor for dinner.
Back story: I met this guy @ a bar the night before. We were both stood up by our dates. He had a vengeance, I was on a vendetta. I had been at the bar for 2 hours hanging with my friend, and him and his neighbor walked in. I was standing in the bathroom line, he started chatting me up -- which turned into us talking until last call, which led to him asking me out Sunday.
We decide to do lunch with him letting me decide. I kept trying to decide. I knew I wanted to try something new that I could write a Yelp review about (sad, right?), and something that could cure a hangover.
I called up my friend Stephen H. He suggested Shaved Duck. Well, Shaved Duck is clearly closed on a Sunday and doesn't even do lunch. My fail of calling to check to see if they were even open. I get there, see it is not open, I call the dude. "Hey, where are you?" He replies that is he is near such and such....near Soulard. I suggest Bogart's. Strike 2. It is closed as well on Sundays.
By this point I don't care what we do. I tell him, let's do Soulard, and he can decide. We went to Molly's.
The ambiance is really neat. I liked the windows and such and the decor. It's nearly 1pm and we are the only people in the place. After we get seated and start talking, a family walks in. A woman and her two kids. I'll be damned that the host couldn't sit them any where else except right next to me and my date.... So much for an intimate Sunday brunch.
Though they were not paying us no mind, I just felt that was poor choicing on the Molly's staff's part. By this point I'm annoyed. I'm trying to pay attention to every last word my date is saying, but at the same time I feel like we have an audience next to us.... Especially when they were 2 feet away from us.
The server comes out, gives us the scoop on the specials. I order one of them. $10.95 for some mediocre penne pasta noodles with sausage? Yeah, I will never make that mistake again. It was really bland and poor choicing on their part by making it a featured dish.
My date ordered their jumbulaya. He enjoyed it and consumed every last bit of it. He didn't like their tea. He said it was really watered down.
After my overpriced dorm room meal, and yes I said overpriced, because I wouldn't dare pay $3 for it if I would have known it was going to taste like that.... We ordered a dessert.
Now this may surprise you. I was floored -- we ordered the banana foster. They were out of ice cream, but they shaved off the price some and I swear it was the best I'd ever had. I'm a harsh critic when it comes to banana desserts. Especially when I think it was better than my grandmother's home made banana pudding. It was so good! Like an orgasm in your mouth. I was scrapping the sauce from the plate because it was delicious. What's funny is my date encouraged me to.
Molly's redeemed itself. Food was not my thing, dessert definitely my thing. I might have just ordered a dish I didn't like. Who knows.... I will go back because I must get this dessert again. Also, I am curious to see how their night life is.
I've become somewhat of a Soulard girl, especially since i started working in Soulard and because several of the area restaurants have upgraded their food.
Molly's is one of my most regular spots because of the awesome patio and because, they have menu options that are much nicer than the average bar food options in Soulard. However, my last couple of food and food service experiences at Molly's have not been good.
First of all. I don't recommend the brunch. Our waitress put our table of two order in behind two large tables that came after us. So, we waited an hour for food. We had to ask for EVERYTHING from condiments and spoon for coffee, utensils for our food and condiments for our food. Our drinks were not refilled until the end of our meal and we waited a very long time for each element of the meal. Â We were there for two hours and not by choice.
My $11.50 Fritatta was terrible. Uncooked eggs was the worst part. I ordered it because it said it had crab and asparagus. Unfortunately, there was barely any crab or asparagus to be found on my very expensive fritatta. Instead it was covered with brie and truffle oil. Who puts brie with crab? This was seriously nasty and truffle oil with brie is just bizarre.
The mac & cheese that used to be awesome at Molly's is not so good now and on a recent visit, I tried the fish tacos. REALLY bad. That stinks since so many local restaurants are rocking the fish tacos now. Molly's should be too.
One last thing, I told the chef about the uncooked eggs and inedible fritatta later that afternoon when he was floating around outside (the waitress did nothing about it during brunch). After he explained that he didn't personally make it, he said "shit happens." Let's just say, that was the wrong answer.
I LUV the patio at Molly's and am glad Soulard has them. I attended a recent Morel Mushroom dinner and had a fabulous meal for a very fair price, put on by same said chef. It was truly awesome.
Unfortunately, the brunch and the fish tacos, mac & Cheese need to go bye bye, and overall service needs to improve, Â I won't be hurrying back any time soon.
Here's the second leg of Jim B.'s Bachelor party we actually ran into the girls having their party as well so it was a kind of joint party at this time. Â The place was busy and it was super hot outside. I think I was getting sober just standing because all the alcohol I had at ITap was seeping out of my pores. Â
The outside patio is great though. They have little cabanas that you can chill out in if you can snag one. Â I remember when they were booths with pillows but now I think they have converted them all to tables. Â It is kind of amazing how many people come in and out of the place and how many people the place can hold. Â The inside bar was jammed wall-to-wall with people so if you aren't ok with people bumping into you then this place on a weekend probably isn't the greatest. Â
I'll probably be back here but definitely on a nicer and cooler night. Â There isn't much in the way of cooling off outside even with the huge drum fan they had. Â We didn't last here too long and I had to two fist it since the bar area and wait times were kind of a mess.
Brunch with a Cajun flair!
Molly's Sunday Brunch offers breakfast standards like scrambled eggs, bacon & sausage links as well as their own Cajun spin on biscuits & gravy, eggs Benedict, mini crab cakes and more! The price was very reasonable and despite the temperatures being below freezing outside the restaurant was snuggle-ly warm, even when we were seated next to a window. Â We have since returned for dinner and found that the restaurant has remained warm, the wait staff are very friendly and the food remains yummy. Â Molly's is semi-fine dining with a casual and warm atmosphere. Â Oh, and lastly, I really enjoy the eclectic music they play. Â I have heard everything from pop to American standards while dining.
Well color me irritated. Â Just came back from a less than stellar experience at Molly's. Â We had never been here before and had a Sauce gift certificate. Â I was super excited about going because our once favorite restaurant (the late great Moxy) was now under the watchful eye of that chef Eric Brenner....or so I thought. Â
After we inquired, our server informed us that their G.M. has been there for three weeks and their NEW chef has been there for a month. Â What??? Â The reason we asked was because of some rather glaring boo-boos in the service side of things. Â
Let me say that the food was good. Â Ok. Â So I was a bit peeved that I was supposed to get brussel sprouts and instead got asparagus. Â The half roasted chicken was a deboned breast and thigh. Â I like having a heads up to changes prior to them being put in front of me. Â It would have been nice for the server to mention the need to make these changes. Â Not spectacular but solid in terms of flavor overall. Â However, our server was a bit nonchalant for my taste. Â Not once, not twice, but THREE times we had to remind him that we required gluten free. Â Keep the freaking bread basket away!!!
It also seemed a bit odd that while we are sitting in the very schmancy dining room that there was music blaring that was heavy on the Rob Zombie, Metallica, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Â I know they have a separate bar area....did they mix up the sound systems? Â Did their rockin bar have relaxing strings or slow jazz wafting through the room? Â Grrrr....when I asked the server what was up he said, "oh yeah, we turned that on earlier" and walked away. Â HELLO?
The whole experience just felt sloppy. Â I'd like a do over please.
Holy huge patio! This patio/outdoor area was the biggest I have ever been to. They had 2 bonfires lit around the property to cozy up next to on a mildly chilly evening.
The prices were average, but they do have a $20 minimum on all credit cards, but they did not enforce that with our group. The main outdoor bar was crazy packed, however, the bar at the far end of the patio and down the hill was not crowded at all, so we were served quickly! I don't think non-regulars really know it is there.
I only came by for late night drinks so I would like to come back and try out the inside area and their menu. I did have a good time at Molly's!
Molly's in not fancy, but who needs fancy when you can sit in a great outdoor garden? Sitting outside at Molly's, was like sitting in the French Quarter, very reminiscent of Pat O'Brien's. To be sure, Molly's is certainly a bar first, and a restaurant second; very much like you'd expect when sitting in any other New Orleans haunt.
Molly's restaurant has a simple but tasty menu. The Steak, Fish Tacos, and the Duck were each among the favorites. The Jambalaya and Salmon fell a little short of bien.
Give Molly's a try, you might like it too.
My first experience at Molly's wasn't so great. We were seated by a bus boy who seemed slightly in a daze. When I asked for a table in the sun he looked around and then goes "shade?". Nooo, sun. Our waitress seemed pretty friendly at first and regularly checked on us throughout the first half of our meal. I ordered the fish tacos, which were pretty good. They came out on flour tortillas even though the menu stated corn tortillas, but that was fine by me since I prefer flour. The husband got a cheeseburger that he said was just OK. I do love their fries.
I also love their patio. It has several levels and is very shady. I imagine it would be hard to get a spot on a nice evening, but we were there around 3 on a Saturday and had no problems.
But back to my bad experience. Partway through our meal the waitress disappeared. No refills or anything. We finished, sat there, the bus boy came and cleared our plates, we continued to sit there, and sit there. She was walking all around us going to her other tables, so I finally got annoyed. My husband eventually went down to the bar where she'd been hanging out and asked for our check. She then looked annoyed like he wasn't supposed to be down there, but guess what, I didn't want to sit at that table for another 30 minutes while you ignored us.
I'm not going to impugn the entire restaurant because of a faulty waitress and I would like to go back and try out the inside at some point, but my first impression was much less than favorable.
I wouldn't really consider myself a "Soulard girl". When I say that, I mean - I dislike pub crawls, crowds in general, overly loud cover bands, bluegrass of any kind, Mardi Gras, large groups of frat boys, etc. I avoid Soulard, because in most cases, there isn't a single place that has wowed me to the point of revisit.
Then you have guests in St. Louis from across the state with varying degrees of pickiness, who want to experience the city. You want to take them to places with local flare that aren't overly touristy. You want them all to be happy with the food they order because you are the resident foodie in the group and simply must represent.
The guests were staying downtown, so I wanted to pick a place that wasn't downtown, but close enough to it they could get their tipsy selves safely home. They wanted to go to a place that would 1) feed them amply, 2) take good care of them (full drinks for adults at all times), 3) tasted good and made everyone happy. This is a tall and intimidating order, if you ask me. Especially considering the fact that I take eating food and drinking drinks very seriously.
So, I aimed, shot in the dark and to Molly's we went.
We were seated immediately despite a large group that included younger children. It was surprisingly empty, which worked great for us. Right off, it was loved by all (though, my 9-year-old brother took a bit of an issue with the "naked ladies" on the walls). The vintage environs, dark and a bit moody. Spicy food, good cocktails. Full bellies and light heads abounded.
I couldn't begin to account for the food everyone ate. I, personally, started out with a refreshing sparkling wine. The server just plunked a mini bottle of it in front of me with a wine glass, which I found a tad off-putting. I ordered the fried green tomatoes (a recommendation from a friend whose husband works at Molly's - Hi Lee!). I also got to taste the mac and cheese and the calamari. All left me completely satiated and content.
I do recall that the Po' Boys my brothers ordered were over flowing with fried oysters, which amounted to some very happy seafood eaters. We asked for everything on the side with one of them because the youngest is the pickiest of them all and doesn't like veggies or sauces. It came out with everything on it, but it didn't seem to bother him too much. All he wanted were the oysters, anyway.
They treated me and my out of town guests very well . Despite a few minor hang-ups, I was very happy and thankful that they didn't embarrass me or wreck my street cred. Truth be told, I will come back to Soulard for Molly's. Even though I'm not a Soulard girl, I would think again about moving to Soulard and making Molly's my neighborhood bar. I would wear my cutest vintage get up and walk myself to Molly's  and feel fancy sipping cocktails on their New Orleans-style patio. Yeah...I loved it that much.
We both had the Prix fixe. 3 for $32
Mussels-tomato-garlic broth. Fresh! and the crusty bread was perfect.
BBQ Shrimp Fried green tomatoes-Sweet and spicy, amazing.
Caesar Salad-a little off. House made caesar but no fresh grated parmesan? Â Romaine was browned--next time will get the beet salad.
Duck Confit & Breast with fingerling potates and green beans was cooked perfectly and a very generous portion.
Rack of Lamb with black eye pea cassoulet was as good as it gets.
Bananas foster beignets-rich, decadent, it was perfect ending to a amazing dinner.
Menu is getting ready to change so we will be back soon for sure.
Visited Molly's and was pretty impressed. Â Some minor issues keep me from issuing 5 stars, but I know I'll be back.
The prix fixe me option is awesome. Â And here is why - you get a freakin' ton of food for a fair price.
Bread and butter - I won't swear if they make their bread in-house or not, but it was still hot and tasty. Â And I'm almost tempted to give an extra star just for having whipped butter. Â What? Â You mean butter doesn't have to have the density of Roentgenium (which may or may not be dense. Â Just work with me and say it is).
So I stared with the Onion soup - as noted previously, this is heavy on the onions, but also rich with flavor. Â Delicious.
Mushroom risotto - the selling point here was the white truffle oil drizzled over the risotto. Â Just adds that extra "woo" to the "hoo."
Bayou etouffee - this was tasty, but a little too light on the crawfish tails and alligator sausage that is supposed to be part of it. Â The beautiful wife had the jambalaya risotto, which is far superior, so next time, I'm going there.
It can get a little pricey here is you're a drinker (*ahem*). Â Martinis ran $9.25 each and a decent zin (Lapis Luna), ran $36 for the bottle (retails around $14 or so).
Service was wonderful and attentive. Â Only minor drawback was having a table of four being seated _right next to us_ despite almost the entire restaurant being empty (and they had a different server).
Like MacArthur, we shall return.
Cute little restaurant, although I was surprised that it was so quiet on a Thursday night (esp after not being able to get a reservation at all our other choices!). Â Our waiter was great - very attentive and answered all our questions.
Mixed feelings about the food, although prices are reasonable and they also offer 2 prix fixe options: for $27, you can get a small plate, medium plate, and a dessert (or substitute soup/salad). Â For $32, you can get a small plate, a large plate, and a dessert (or substitute soup/salad).
Food from last night:
1) Bread/butter - great and homemade!
2) Caesar salad - disappointing. Â Some of the lettuce was turning brown...ick.
3) Onion soup - a little on the sweet side and practically no soup (all onions!).
4) Lobster mac & cheese (special) - not bad...there were a few pretty good-sized pieces of lobster.
5) Berkshire pork - the bf was disappointed that the pork was on the fatty side, but that is my preference! Â *yay* fat!!!
6) Mussels - the others said there was too much garlic, but that's OK by me.
7) Chocolate pecan pie - I think it was still frozen or something bc it was rock solid.
8) Bananas foster beignets - the group said these were awesome (I don't like bananas, much less bananas foster).
The bf said we'd prob pass on coming back for dinner, but he would be OK for coming in for dessert (he was sad they were all out of the bread pudding).
Went here after they took over the restaurant next door. Loved it! The food was amazing and the atmosphere was warm and cozy. They have a great wine selection as well. The service was OK.
The only downside was when we got there there was a wait and the bar area in the restaurant only seats 4-5. They were full, so we felt like we were in the way while the servers were trying to get food, drinks and put in orders.
At the end of the night though it was a good experience. I would definitely go back.
My memory is a little foggy but I'd wager to say Molly's is a better than average bar. Â The patio out back is spacious and there were fireplaces scattered about to add a little warmth to a cold October night. Â The bartender out back was friendly and fast, prices were pretty reasonable.
Oh and a note to another gentleman who reviewed this establishment: You tipped a server less than 10%? Â LESS THAN TEN FUCKING PERCENT!? Â Are you fucking kidding me? Â The server isn't the one cooking your food, or pricing the menu, dude. Â On top of that, he or she has to tip out the bar, the busboy and anyone else helping them out. Â I hope you feel good about fucking over someone who spends their whole shift on their feet and putting up with other people's bullshit.
We initially wanted to eat at Norton's but it seems they were combined with Mollys - which is terrible.
The service was awful, the food was overpriced, the menu was extremely limited and the lack of specials was presented to us as a benefit.
One of the few times I've ever tipped lower than 10% and if we weren't already so hungry we would have left to find someplace else to eat.
