I live in the neighborhood, was excited to hear a beer garden was opening, and really wanted to like this place. However...
I hate that the "garden" is a under a huge patio roof. There is no way to sit and enjoy the sunshine in the current layout. It seems such a waste that the beer garden is a small section of a larger parking lot. Why not expand it into the parking lot and have true outdoor space like Zeitgeist or the Missouri?
Also despite what it says on yelp about being kid friendly - it is NOT. I was there recently, the place was half empty and we were repeatedly told that our kids had to stay seated. I have never experienced this before in any patio situation. I felt like I was being micromanaged. They should either welcome kids or not allow them. This half way in between thing is uncomfortable.
I love this place. Quality, creative burger options with local, medium-rare-by-default cooked meat and delicious buns (an oft overlooked but key part to a burger). The fries are awesome and the onion rings are delicious as well. The beer selection isn't my favorite but I really come for the burgers.
Review Source:OMG, what a cool place, a total find. Â I actually came across it by mistake but I'm so happy I did. Â Amazing selection of beer, great service and overall atmosphere - breezy ceiling fans, outdoor seating, nice selection of tunes... Â I ordered the brat and a pint of tasty brew (called Arrogant Bastard ale). Â Perfect combo on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Â I love discoveries like Moxy Beer Garden. It may be off the beaten path, but well worth the drive. This definitely will not be a "best-kept secret" much longer!
Review Source:Shortie review this one, since I can't say I had a thorough visit here. Met some friends here for a few pints, but had eaten already so stuck to brew.
Decent tap list for the area. Nothing along the lines of Beer Revolution, but not many places are. Sat outside in the "Beer Garden" which as others have pointed out is really just a fenced in section of the parking lot with a few picnic tables and portable heaters. Service was alright, although would have hoped for better since they were really quiet (Saturday night, too). Definitely agree with one of the other reviews that said that their beer sizes aren't correct. Their "20oz" is nowhere near that, maybe only a couple ounces bigger than their advertised 14oz.
Friends of mine who are regulars there advised that the food was okay, but the vegan buffalo bites (battered and fried caulifower florets with wing sauce) were outstanding. Next time I stop by, I'll give 'em a go.
All in all though, a reasonable wee spot. Nothing to write home about, though, or go out of your way for.
Moxy is amazing! This neighborhood has needed new life for a long time and Moxy really fits in. Loads of outdoor seating (a surprising rarity in the Bay Area), an impressive selection of beers (with good happy hour prices), and really good food. I love it, and would go there more often if I could.
Review Source:We wanted to try this place. It was a previous wine bar and the space is pretty. Open air and even has parking. Their beer list was decent. I would have liked more Belgium choices but they had enough of a selection to enjoy a beer. Their menu is very limited. Only one salad and a couple of fried appetizers. It would be nice for them to expand on the appetizer and salad section. One salad seems very odd being in the area where seasonal vegetables are some of the most bountiful in the country.
The sandwich section is ok but you don't get fries with your meal. These are ala carte sandwiches. If you don't like fries, unfortunately you are stuck with their only salad as a substitute.
We tried the onion rings and vegan buffalo wings. Both were decent but I would suggest that you share these items. They are way too much for one person. We liked the cauliflower initially but the hot sauce fatigued us after a while and their version of ranch dipping sauce had absolutely no flavor at all. Adding lemon juice or some acid to the sauce would help accent the appetizer but it just fell flat. It would also be nice for them to add various dipping sauces to the fries instead of the innocuous ketchup. They just seemed boring.
We tried the patty melt and blue cheese burger. The patty melt needs to be revisited. First, it should be on dark rye which really makes the flavor of the bread and other ingredients mesh well. The sandwich was very over dressed with the aioli and ketchup and it was just a mess trying to get through. It really detracted from the pickles and caramelized onions. I didn't understand the chipotle choice. It seemed misguided. Â And don't even attempt at cutting it in half. The blue cheese burger was ok. I'm disappointed in the fact that they do not take temperature requests on the burgers since they pride themselves on using local grass fed beef. Our burgers came out well done. What a terrible thing to do to a great product. I would of wanted our burgers mid-rare. These seemed dried out. Bummer.
The service was friendly if not aloof. We had to flag down our server to get more beers and when we were done with our meals, the server just plopped down the check without asking us if we wanted another beer. It's a beer garden right?
The place has tons of potential. Great space and beer. What couldn't you ask for? I would love for them to focus more on the food side. Add some sausages to the menu, maybe mussels. Something that goes well with beer. BBQ? Short Ribs...something! The quality and price for the product we tried would not be enough to go back because we want more variety. On a single visit we tried 42% of their menu. Please revisit the menu and get more options that compliment beer!!!!
Hmmmmmm... hard to give a beer+burger place nearby a mixed review.
On the one hand, the tap is decent, and the fries are delicious (although, I feel like adding a side of aioli is basically cheating).
I ordered a blue cheese burger. It was super sloppy, but decent. The bread was fairly unremarkable, but the meat and toppings were satisfying.
Service was okay. The kitchen was backed up, so we got our fry order as a dessert. Took a while to get folks' attention for drinks and checks.
There are an odd number of strollers and children around for a place that bills itself as a beer garden. More strange are the numerous "Mind your children!" signs plastered all around the patio.
In any event, I might go back if I'm in the area, but I've got better burger and beer alternatives nearby.
Went here to hang with a friend in the neighborhood. No bike parking! Lame. Big parking lot, but sometimes when I drink beers I'm not trying to find a dd or drive. I was greeted immediately by some nice staff waiting in the dining area. The bar tender checked my young friends passport for the birth date before serving beer, and that took a few minutes and was super awkward about it. I guess not his fault that he doesn't see those all day long.
The "atmosphere" if you believe in that is not super great. There are lots of imposing printed out signs about children and no pets, that come off as kind of weird instead of informative. I know from working customer service that repeating yourself all day sucks, but I don't like reading paranoid signs every corner telling me what to do. The music they had on blows and was uninspiring rock Ala apple bees or something.
The food was pretty good. Fries with a truffle dip were good, and while I thought the "vegan wings" sounded a little weird, they blew my mind. Breaded cauliflower in a tangy buffalo sauce, who knew so good? Beer selection wasn't tooooo bad.
There was this super bad ass cat walking around the patio area that was pretty cool and curious and obviously a neighborhood cat. He kept getting shooed away by the manager or the waitress for some reason. The cat would lurk behind a bush for a minute then come back into the patio, and they would try using the cellphone flash light ap to spook it. Cat could care less, and kept us company more after they weren't looking. I almost wanted to steal this spy cat after a few beers, since it was a super bad ass but it had a collar (and thus an owner). Anyways, I thought that was weird too. Just kind of a weird place.
These reviews are bullshit. This place has amazing beer and the Ruben has changed my life. I've maybe been on slower evenings (although saturday isn't a slow time) but the service has always been friendly and on point. It's a bit expensive, but worth it. I'm super pleased to have a superior beer garden in my neighborhood. But don't come, I want a table whenever I go ;-)
Review Source:I really want to support this restaurant as I live 2 blocks away and it has so much potential...I gave it a third star because I really want to see it succeed.
But I should have read the reviews before I went and spent $100 on mediocre food and terrible service. Â It seems they have had a rocky start and an identity crisis...are families invited to dine or not? Lane Splitter on San Pablo is a favorite hangout for me and my family and it seemed that Moxy was promising to be similar...good beer, good /easy food, relaxing environment. Â
Well the hammer has fallen and children are definitely not welcome. Â Our children were very well behaved and there were only 2 other people in the restaurant (we ate dinner at 5pm) and the owner made it a point to tell us that our children needed to remain seated at all times. Â Yup, got it - I saw the signs posted all over the patio and printed in the menu. It sounds like they got overwhelmed with families taking the place over... And I get it kids are chaos. But there are tons of families in the neighborhood and we are hungry for a place to frequent. Maybe you could have one night a week that's family night...choose the deadest night - it doesn't matter to us parents we never go out/always wake up early - Monday night and Friday are the same to us :)
Sadly the servers were unfriendly and the service was slow...it took forever to get menus let alone our food (which btw is the best way to keep kids in their seats - feed them!)
The burgers were ok but the buns were soggy. Â The beer was delicious as were the truffle fries - super yum. Â I could eat an entire order of truffle fries! Â We tried 4 different IPAs and really enjoyed the variety.
I will try to stop by every now and again and have a beer with my adult friends who don't have children...after the kids are in bed. But I live 2 blocks away and was so hoping to go there regularly to have a beer, feed the kids and chill. Oh well. Â
Oh and rip out the tile floor inside and put in wood floors. Â Casa Vino always felt so dead & ugly inside and you haven't changed much of the interior aesthetics.
A few benches in a parking lot are NOT a beer garden (as the name suggests) - looks rather run down.
Besides the look and feel of the place, Â beer is also overpriced and miss labeled. Â According to their beer list, they serve 14oz & 20oz sizes.
The 14oz beer is served in a 12oz glass and the 20oz beer I ordered was delivered in a ~15oz glass. Â I pointed out the discrepancy to the server who did not think it was a big deal. (water is served in 12oz plastic cups - which allowed me to measure)
Plenty of places with great beer in Berkeley - no need to to go there to get ripped off.
The truffle fries are GREAT. Â
I also had a lamb burger. Â The pickled onions were a little odd for a burger, but no biggie, I just took them off. Â The burger was quite good. Â I like the comparatively thin bun and the sauce.
OK selection of beers on tap. Nothing to write home about, but decent.
I'm fine with it not being more kid-friendly. Â I don't go to drink beer at day care centers, so I'm not sure why someone would expect a bar to cater to that.
The canned classic rock'n'roll was too loud and played on poor quality speakers. Â Seriously, this was the biggest negative; Â just turn it down a notch, OK?
The music was too loud and the server seemed annoyed to be working. The burger was $9 and was just meat on a bun with a huge glob of ketchup. No garnish, no lettuce tomato onion pickle nothing! My medium burger was bleeding, and I watched two other people send theirs back for the same reason. Blech.
Review Source:We had lunch here last week on the nice deck. Â The burgers were excellent, and the garlic fries nothing to complain about either. The meat was well seasoned and cooked to our specifications. Â Buns were also very good. Â An impressive array of beer and good music rounded out our visit. Â Hard to think of a better burger I've had in Berkeley, and I've tried pretty much all of them. Â Well done!
Review Source:The beer and the veggie burgers are both great. Â The beer's a bit expensive, as in I can have one beer there for about the price of two at most restaurants. Â I'm really glad they moved to the neighborhood, as Casa Vino never drew us in, despite being only a block from our house. Â It always looked a bit run down, and it really didn't add anything to the neighborhood, so when Moxy moved in, we and our neighbors were all really excited to have good food and beer just around the corner. Â And a beer garden, and a patio!! Â
Sounds like a great match for a neighborhood with tons of young families, right?  Well, our upstairs neighbor had his birthday party there a few weeks ago, and all his  friends with young kids came too.  We spent tons of money, had lots of fun, and took over the whole southern end of the patio with our party that filled up three big tables.  The kids had fun too.  They danced and played and stayed over on our end of the patio.  We asked several people there about adding a kids' menu, and they said they'd look into it.
Â
We just went back, and I asked about a kids' menu, and the server told me they're not getting one, and they're trying to "cater more towards adults". The Facebook page changed their business description from "beer garden" to "bar". Â They even have signs posted now that say, "For the safety and comfort of all our guests, children must remain seated at their table with adult supervision. Thank you for your cooperation." So WHY DID THIS RESTAURANT OPEN UP IN A NEIGHBORHOOD WITH TONS OF FAMILIES IF THEY DIDN'T WANT OUR BUSINESS??!! Â Bad idea. Â People who live in this neighborhood either have kids or really like living around them. Â And the patrons with whom we've interacted at the restaurant have also enjoyed our being there. Â
Madeleine K, you can go back there now, and we'll go to Lanesplitters instead.
My wife and I live a few blocks from here and decided to stop in for a weekend lunch. Â Since it was still pretty new, and the old Casa Vino in this location was never super-crowded, we were expecting it to be pretty empty. Â Not so. Â Most of the tables outside were taken (it was a nice day in mid-May), but there was one left where the host seated us.
The beer selection is quite good, mostly (entirely?) on tap and mostly California. Â There was a good variety and our server was particularly well-versed in being able to describe the flavor, level of bitterness, and better known alalogs of the various brews. Â He had an unusual skill in being able to explain taste without seeming pretentious or overbearing and totally deserves to be called out by name except I totally forgot to ask what it was.
The food menu, for a vegetarian, is mediocre: there's  the veggie burger (albeit a good homemade one); and then like seven varieties of meat sandwich. How about a entree sized salad (preferably with beans and avocado) or something? Allegedly, according to our server, Moxy is planning on an expanded menu and that would be the primary avenue to get more stars from me.
The outside patio is nice -- they put up a nice fence and a few decorations, but it could use a little extra somethin'. Â I think that might just be more plants and more decorations. Â Also, there was a bunch of equipment -- garden hoses, tools, other such junk -- on one end that definitely detracted from the vibe. So second most important item is to make the patio seem like a nicer place to hang out. You're on a good path -- I don't even think Casa Vino used the patio -- just keep on going and put a little more effort into it.
WHAT? No dogs allowed on the patio?! I can enjoy a limited beer selection at home... I live around the corner. While I do want to support a local business, I think they should cater to the folks in the neighborhood. What other place in Oakland or Berkeley with an outdoor seating area does not allow dogs that are under their owner's control/leashed. I waited there awhile to get seated, and ran into some neighbors. We thought the music outside was a little bit too loud to have a conversation. I left before ordering, because the service was too disorganized. Hope things change for the better, Moxy, cuz I sure would like to be a patron.
Review Source:Had a great meal with friends and family. So glad this place opened so close to my home. Service was good and friendly, burgers were inventive and tasty, and beer selection was uncommon and enticing.
I would have only given four stars, but added an extra one to help offset the one-star review from someone upset about a phone call. That just isn't helpful to give a new business a one-star review over a phone call.
Good luck, Moxy. I for one am delighted to have a neighborhood beer garden/burger joint and look forward to many more visits.
This place has a ton of potential so I'm willing to give them another chance once they have a better handle on things.
That said, for a beergarden they have a pretty mediocre beer selection (especially by Bay-Area standards). Their veggie options are also a bit meh. Gets pretty crazy on Friday nights, and I like the beergarden vibe. They seem a little overwhelmed at times, but that should get better as they figure things out.
I was stoked to have a beer garden in the neighborhood, until I visited Moxy last Friday night. The place was crawling with children -- literally. There were at least a dozen children, screaming, leaping, running around. I am happy there is a place where parents can bring their children and get their drink on (wait - am I? I'll save that judgement for another forum) but this should be HEAVILY ADVERTISED (on their website in addition to Yelp). It was a complete turn-off. We called our friends to tell them not to join us -- we'd be better off enjoying a few beers in our backyard. We did stay and drink the beer we had already ordered.
Unfortunately, the beer selection was average at best, AND the beers were expensive! $6 for a draft? At an establishment that is advertising itself as a beer garden? No, thanks.
The patio is completely covered, so although you're outside, you won't be enjoying the feel of the sun.
And, you can't sit down until half of your party arrives. As a hostess, I sort of find that reasonable, but in reality it's just another reason why this place isn't great.
Such a great idea and concept but so poorly executed.
Moxy is what happens when people who know nothing about beer or running a restaurant, and have no clue about how much money it costs to make it look like you give a rip...decide they should open a place of their own. Â
The draft Beer: Â On the chalkboard that featured 7 new beers, Â 1 Stout, 1 Sour or Farmhouse and the rest IPA's.. Gosh, Â such variety...
The bottled beer: Â Nothing that cant be found on the shelf at Safeway... So let me get this straight you opened a beer destination and offer nothing that I haven't had "EVERYWHERE ELSE" Â
The restaurant: Â Â The bathroom window is at the top of the ramp to the front door. Â For both the Men's and women's rooms. Â They have removed the bottom pane and put in a screen! Â Nothing says "Hey let's eat like watching a guy taking a leak in the men's room." Â Conversely I have no desire to greet the new arrivals with my fly unbuttoned.
The food: Â Fair...I looked through another screen and into the kitchen. Â It's very large and there were many people working in it. Â So why is it the only food they can put out is a burger and 3 variety's of fries?
Obviously they spent all their money on the outdoor overhead sound system, and wanted to show it off...Why else would they make the volume 20% louder than something that would allow for casual conversation...
There are so many places that offer way better and larger beer selections with good food. And many more good food destinations with interesting beer lists.
Unfortunately this is just some place hoping the folks in the neighborhood will not know any better.....
I am SO happy this place opened up walking distance to my house. Our little section of North Oakland/South Berkeley doesn't have that many places to hang out within walking distance.
We went in there to watch the Warriors/Nuggets playoff game and grab a beer and a bite. They had a nice selection of high quality beers (mostly local and Californian) on tap, including cider. It was pretty busy and I get the sense that I am not the only neighbor who is excited about this place and wants to see it do well.
Fries were AWESOME. Owner and staff were friendly and enthusiastic.
Burgers, on the other hand, were not even close to awesome. In their defense, I ordered a veggie burger and maybe those don't get ordered too often? The bread was only lightly toasted and was way too soft. The veggie patty was also apparently undercooked so, together with the bread, the whole thing had a mushy consistency. It was also served on a big plate with nothing else on it, and it looked sad. A pickle or orange slice or something would have been nice.
Anyway, I am rooting for this place and I will definitely return. I hope they figure out their burger situation soon, because this spot has potential.
I'm happy there's a decent place that we can walk to from our South Berkeley home. We thought about going to Barney's for burgers but decided to try this new place instead.
Good things:
-Fries. Delicious, perfectly cooked fries with yummy spices (the plain, non-garlic, non-truffle)
- Regular burger was really delicious
- Really friendly, efficient service
- Food was served very quickly (not too busy on a weekday lunch)
- Location - South Berkeley has a dearth of good restaurants and beer gardens
- Nice to be able to sit outside
Needs improvement
- Decor - it's pretty bare
-Burger buns. Would be better toasted a bit. Mine was not cut evenly in half which meant that the top was very thin and the bottom was quite thick. By the end of the burger the top was pretty much disintegrated due to its thinness.
-Ketchup added already. When I was a kid I liked ketchup on my burgers, but now I much prefer mayo and mustard and would rather be given a choice.
- Food presentation left a lot to be desired. Just a burger slapped on a big white plate.
- Regular Burgers come with butter lettuce. Lamb burgers come with onions and aioli, but not lettuce.
- Beer kind of pricey, not a good selection of cheap beer
- No high chairs. Maybe the point is that they don't want to attract kids young enough to be in a high chair. If so, then we're not really going to be able to go too often. It makes for a much more enjoyable meal for us if our kids can be safely seated in a high chair (at least for the time it takes us to scarf down a burger). And the alternative (outside anyway) was mostly benches (which our little ones fall off easily).
A comfortable place with good food and sweet service, but I think it's a little overpriced for what it is. The beers are a bit more expensive than other beer gardens and the selection, while good, is no better than other local options. Had the salad and it was excellent, actually. Quite filling with  arugula, white beans, cucumbers, olives and feta.
As others have mentioned, this is a family-friendly place. I don't mind kids at the beer garden, but when they're running around shrieking, that's a different story. I don't drink at your daycare center. Don't bring your Chuck E. Cheese party to the place where I'm spending a decent bit of money to get a buzz on.
No wifi, no dogs allowed.
Moxy Beer Garden was a great stop on the bike-ride home from Berkeley to Oakland. Â Great outdoor area with very friendly service, an unassuming vibe, and an amazing selection of beer! Â Love the Hefeweizen and the Amber IPA!
Also, the truffle fries are a steal at $3 for a (relatively huge) "small" order. FREAKING YUM.
The beer itself was a little pricey, and they didn't offer pitchers or even any cheap crappy beer....left a little to be desired, but I had a great time and love the location and setup. Â Next time I'll get some actual food from the menu (which is essentially composed of about 8 burgers).
I'm totally O.K. with this place.
I enjoyed our visit to Moxi last night for the most part.. The garlic fries are delicious and so was the lamb burger. Service was friendly although the waitress was a bit overworked. I believe her difficulty stems from the layout of the restaurant where she needs to cover several tables indoors as well as go outside to serve a long row of tables, leaving either those indoors or those outdoors out Of her eyesight.
My question. Is Moxi a beer garden or a restaurant?. If it is a beer garden then the beer is overpriced for a beer lover like I am to go for the beer. At nine bucks for a glass of beer I am unable to afford the five or six glasses I would prefer to sit and enjoy. Better lower the price of beer and offer pitchers.
Since the beer is high priced like in a fine dining establishment then perhaps the goal is to focus on bringing in return customers to enjoy fine food? If this is the case the menu needs to be greatly expanded. Ten or twelve items and all standard beer pub type foods will not bring foodies like my designated driver Wifie back for the food items.
Three and three quarters stars since the beer and the food is good. Unfortunately with the limited menu and the expensive beer, my party of four will not be able to return for either.
.
Moxy is great!
First, it makes a great spot for a family lunch. We brought our 6-month-old along, and there were a bunch of other families there having Saturday lunch.
The food was all excellent too - we had a pair of medium-rare, perfectly cooked burgers, an over-generous basket of fresh cut fries, and a truly delightful salad made from arugula, sprouts, feta, olives, and vinaigrette.
The salad was really impressively sized and quite tasty, and I thought the fresh butter lettuce made for a great burger topping. Service was fast and friendly too.
I wrote a longer blogpost about it, since I live in the area: <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsanpablopark.blogspot.com%2F2013%2F04%2Fmoxy-beer-garden-and-future-of.html&s=5dd48166e0d74ac36f35d5a6361eddcf79ab0df77507f4ae8cda6058bdf6c735" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://sanpablopark.blog…</a>
The hubs and I were so excited to have a new beer/burger joint in the neighborhood! Perhaps we were overly hyping it up in our minds or they are still working out a lot of inefficiencies.
I'm rating this place 3 stars. This place has a great outdoor patio...we didn't actually sit out there on this visit, BUT it looked like a great place to hang out on a summer afternoon/evening. The thing to order here are the garlic fries...the garlic fries are great here! Definitely the best we've ever had in the area and the order comes in a nice big bowl, uses real garlic and they stayed nice and crispy to the very end. They also have truffle fries which looked good, too...I'd imagine those taste great, as well.
One of the major things we noticed and was disappointed by was the service. It was very slow...we sat there for a good 15-20 minutes before someone came around to take our order. There were other people there who we saw that were sitting at their tables, waiting for someone to come around that never did..so they had to actually walk themselves up to the bar to ask if they could put an order in. We knew this place was new so we didn't want to expect much...but the whole process of ordering and getting our actual food took a long time.
We also tried their burgers...which are just ok. Their bun didn't seem to hold up their part of keeping the burger together. We didn't feel it was anything special...and for $9+ for a burger we expected the quality to be a bit more than what it was. It's also an important thing to note that they don't put the lettuce/tomatoes/onions/pickles on your burger unless you specifically ask for it. The hubs thought that all came automatically and he was stuck eating a plain meat patty between two buns. I know it says that they won't include it unless you ask on their menu, but I think the server should at least double check to make sure you know what you're getting, as at most places it's assumed your burger would have those things on the plate.
Overall, this place is a great neighborhood spot to get some beers and have some garlic fries....as for the burgers, they aren't the greatest. I hope this place succeeds and gets their slower service to be a bit faster. Only time will tell.
One last thing...they really could use a bike rack somewhere on their premises. We rode our bikes here and saw 3 other people, also looking for spots to lock their bikes and had to lock them to a rack that was down the street. All the closer signposts adequate for locking a bike to were already occupied with locked bikes. This is Berkeley, after all...I'm sure the biking community here would love a place they could bike to, easily park their bike within view of that great patio and enjoy a beer with their garlic fries...just sayin.
A very, very solid 3 stars.
I'm so glad there's a decent burger place in the area (in addition to Victory Burger!). My girlfriend and I were riding past on our bikes and noticed Casa Vino was doneso and a beer garden took its place. We're more beer drinkers so that makes me happy.
Anyways, they've only been open for a week so there's a bunch they need to work on, however I can see the potential!
Good stuff:
-Prices. Everything is under $10, sweet.
-Fries. Huge portions for a half order and they're super tasty.
-Burger selection. Lots of choices including veggie, turkey and lamb!
-Beer selection. It's a beer garden, duh.
Needs some work:
-They're new, which means slow service. It'll get better the longer they're open.
-Decor. It could use some work as the floor and wallpaper clearly weren't updated from when this was Casa Vino.
-Burger buns. For some reason ours were a bit soggy, could use some more toasting. If only they used Acme bread MMmmm..
-Ketchup added already. I find it odd that they added ketchup already inside of the burgers. What if somebody doesn't like ketchup on their burger, or they're picky about the amount? My girlfriend's burger was good but there was more ketchup than she would've liked, resulting in too sweet of a burger.
-No condiments on the table. Another weird thing is they don't have ketchup, mustard, salt/pepper, and napkins already on the table.
Like I said, they have some work to do but they can really shine if they make a couple minor adjustments.
Moxy  Beer Garden offfers 13 draft beers on tap (5.5+), burgers and fries.
eats: the burger(9) "choice of cheese, butter lettuce, ketchup, pickles, red onions"
-ordered med. rare, got reddish meat but it wasn't juicy.
-meat chewy, tender
-bun sweet tasting
-burger better than average, looked like 1/3#
3.5 stars
pour: english apple cider (5.5) "stow..."
-nice
-beers selection slightly average, Â 3 stars
-beer pricing not the cheapest nor the highest.
on draught:
-bartender kept trying to clear my plate before i was finished
-liminted seating at bar, tables outside and inside.
-no wait staff noticed in the afternoon.
-parking in lot limited to 6 cars.
Haven't gone yet. Just found whomever answered the phone when I called to be absolutely rude. Â It was after 6pm so maybe they were busy but that is no excuse to be rude to a potential customer on the phone.
Until that moment I was excited about trying it out. Â Now, I may never go. Â Why bother when there are so many other fabulous options.
I live around the corner from Moxy. As with many of my neighbors I was excited about a new place opening in our neighborhood. We'd love a nearby place to get a hamburger.
I was mostly disappointed when went to the opening 5:00pm April 18, 2013. I ordered a hamburger (tasty, but bun fell apart), deep fried onion rings (oily), and a bottle of beer, total $27.00 with tip and tax. Neighbors had complained that the previous restaurant at that site, Casa Vino, was charging $8 for a glass of wine. My bottle of domestic beer was $8. I hope Moxy adds a combo entry so a complete meal can be gotten for under $20.
The noise level was irritating. Loud recorded music played through speakers both inside and in the outside seating area. This may lead to problems down the road with neighbors, especially since Moxy plans to stay open from 5pm to midnight.
Even through the neighborhood has lots of young couples with small children, the Moxy menu and setup are not kid friendly. Young couples are not going to hire a baby sitter to nip out for a hamburger, they will take the kid(s) with them.
Moxy could have used a manager or owner at the door to guide customers and staff. There was a lot of confusion at the entrance of both staff and customers. Service was choppy.
Anyone who has mobility issues (difficulty walking or wheelchair) has NO access to the outside sitting area unless someone helps them navigate a flight of stairs, or opens an unmarked (no sign about handicap access) gate from the parking lot for them.
I and my neighbors hope that Moxy can thrive through working out some of the kinks.
Sunday eve 8pm 2013-04-28: The issues I wrote about above are still there. I stopped by to get a burger and beer, but the music was still too loud for me to be comfortable, so I looked around the restaurant and scanned the menu, and then left. There were at least thirty customers, mostly young singles and couples.
Apparently some of my neighbors are giving this place a bum rap. You want a kid-friendly menu? How many kid-friendly craft beer joints are there in South Berkeley?? There was at least one child for every six adults on opening night. Am I complaining about all the whining kids at my local craft beer joint? No! You should be happy a place like this exists and allows children in the first place.
I arrived around 6:30pm on opening night and had three pints and the Moroccan Lamb Burger. The beer selection is stellar, and all local, and my lamb burger was the single best lamb burger I've eaten. There were problems one would associate with a new place on opening night, but the good far outweighed the less-than-good.
Bottom line is that this place is what it claims to be, and kicks ass at that. If you want a playground out front and a children's menu, stay home or go to McDonald's.
OMG!!!!!!!! Moxy I'm so in love with you!!! I live literally around the corner and have been waiting for a place to catch a drink and yummy food. YOU HAVE DELIVERED!!!
Even with your opening craziness you had great food, service, and atmosphere. Seriously you deserve a beer for a job well done! We will be coming often. Â
XO your neighbors
P.S. I did leave off a star for the confusing seating while arrival but I'm sure you'll work out a system.
Took a drive out to Moxy Beer Garden last night for their grand opening with a few friends. We arrived a little after 9pm hungry and thirsty for some fine brews. As we were greeted by a waitress/hostess, she informed us that they were no longer serving food. Disappointed, we decided to sit down and drink instead. We expected someone to take our orders but no one came (that expectation came from the greeting of the waitress/hostess). After waiting for 10 minutes outside we left empty handed and went back to Berkeley.
Their beer selection is decent. Maybe I'm just spoiled with awesome craft beers from nearby locations like Beta Lounge or Jupiters, but I wasn't impressed by their selection. Sure, they had a couple of obscure ones that I haven't tried, but I was expecting some champion drafts, especially for a grand opening. I would have loved to try their food but apparently they close the kitchens at 9pm. Seems early to me. I'm not giving them a 1 star rating because if I lived within walking distance, I could see myself frequenting Moxy often.
Minus a star because it's not walking distance from my house.
Bonus star for the haters.
I'm really surprised by how whiny the early reviews are -- obviously when you walk into someplace that crowded, nothing is going to happen very fast, here or anywhere else. Maybe you are just really, really special and that's why you're expecting everyone to stop serving everyone who's already there just because you deigned to drop in. Whatever. I hope you guys don't come back because I don't want to listen to you complaining about whatever's up your ass next time I'm there.
Fantastic spot, kind of like if Zeitgeist was clean and had more California-style food and wasn't so windy -- there's big patio area in front with lots of picnic tables with and a very mixed crowd of neighborhoodies, families, college kids, and everyone else. The decor is super gorgeous and cute and made me want to go home and redecorate.
Went to the opening and they were obviously not expecting such a huge turnout. Even so, we were able to get seating and beers [great selection] pretty quickly. Food took longer and they were out of beef so I reluctantly ordered a the blackened turkey burger. Turns out they make one helluva turkey burger. The onion rings were some of the best I've ever had. The fries are amazing and come in a ridiculously large serving -- our table had two bowls and a dozen people on and off over a couple hours that we were hanging out and we couldn't even finish them.
The staff were very nice and  super apologetic about the beef shortage. I had a great time hanging out and will definitely will be whiling away a bunch of sunny Berkeley afternoons here.
