Came here in the afternoon of the Providence College graduation. Lee were looking for a little snack before an early dinner. Both my sister and I ordered bloody Mary's. Â They were a little heavy on the horseradish but all in all pretty good.
All three of us ordered stuffed quahogs which were PERFECT.
I ordered French onion soup. It was ok but lacking in flavor.
With some time to kill before graduation ended we also put in an order for Reuben egg rolls which I also thoroughly enjoyed.
The menu was extensive and had a ton of things I wanted to try. Will definitely go back the next time I'm in town. Seemed look a fun place to watch Patriots games!
I have been coming here for years before or after the PBruins game to grab a drink. One night I even met Canny the Can (I think that was his name), the Narragansett Beer Mascot here. Later that night he was stolen, I wonder if he was ever found...sorry tor the cliff hanger but I don't know the ending of the story.
It was not until this weekend that I actually tried the food. I have to say I was pretty impressed. It starts off with a bowl of sliced pickles which have a great taste and a hearty crunch. I got the steak and cheese with fries. It was perfectly cooked and had a nice flavor. They have a large assortment of sandwiches to choose from. On top of this they have a nice and reasonably priced beer selection. If you are in the downtown Providence area and are looking for a sandwich Murphy's is a good place to try!
My husband and I went here for lunch last week. Â He ordered a pastrami sandwich, which the waitress dropped on my lap and my arm. Â I had short sleeves on so it burned like hell, plus expensive gray business pants that were stained. Â There were pastrami bits all over my food I ordered because of the spill. Â I didn't want to cause a scene and I felt bad for the waitress so I kept my cool, although I was extremely pissed off. Â I had a meeting to go to in an hour and had to attend with ruined pants. Â The waitress said to get them dry cleaned and send them the bill...
I would have been OK, but then they brought the bill over and were still charging me for my meal and my husbands pastrami plus the 2 cans of soda we ordered. Â I figured they should have comped something because of the inconvenience they were causing me with my wrecked pants and my burnt arm. Â I asked for the manager and now regret that choice. Â She came out and actually BLAMED my husband for ordering a greasy sandwich when I had a meeting. Â She also said something along the lines of "why are you upset about a little bit of pastrami falling on your lap?". Â It was the ENTIRE sandwich!!! Â She kept talking and talking and hardly let me say a word. Â She went on and on about how her husband once ruined a $400 shirt of hers with a sloppy joe and how she has her doctorate degree and some dissertation she wrote. Â It made me very uncomfortable. Â I asked if she could take something off the bill since our lunch was ruined and she just ripped the bill up in front of my face.
I ended up going and buying pants that only cost maybe a 1/3 of what I paid for the ruined ones. Â I only did this because I needed something fast so that I could attend my meeting and brought over the receipt the next day. Â Of course I got an attitude when I dropped it off. Â The person who took care of it actually had the audacity to tell me I shouldn't have gotten new pants, I should have had mine dry cleaned. Â If you saw this stain you would know there was no way in hell it was coming out. Â It literally covered both thighs. Â I will never ever go back there again.
This was my lunchtime stop on the way to Boston. Part large bar, part small deli, Murphy's takes up the entire corner of the building on Fountain Street. Categorized with the overused description, Irish Pub, I was curious what that actually meant in R.I.
I quickly figured out the Reuben sandwich is their signature item. Being a general fan who hadn't had one in awhile, I figured I had to try the Murphy's Famous Corned Beef on grilled rye with a side of coleslaw and their homemade pickles.
I was pleased to see the large sandwich was piled with plenty of meat, sauerkraut and Swiss cheese. No skimping here. The coleslaw was standard but the pickles were slammin'! They still looked like cucumbers, but tasted just like a pickle should...not sweet.
The older lady bartender was very pleasant and friendly, capping off a very nice lunch experience. Thumbs up, Murphy's!
Oh Murphy's...you have fueled me through many concerts. Â I used to come grab dinner here before playing shows at either Lupo's (right next door) or the old Club Hell (a solid 5 minute walk away). Â It became a kind of ritual. Â Sandwhiches are always good...big...messy...delicious. Â You can even go for a LARGER MONSTER sandwhich to share. Â The prices are on par and the specials are usually pretty good. Â We tried the wings for the first time a couple weeks ago. Â I got buffalo...and was pleasently surprised. Â You cant beat $2 for a half pound, either! (special during Sox, Bruins, Celtics or Pats games) You also get a lil bowl of FREE pickles!! Â I lile the pickled tomatoes the best. Â
I wouldnt drink the coffee, though. Â The pots are located under the scratch ticket vending machine so when the ticket slides down the ramp...the little shreds of broken dreams looks like it might get mixed into the brew. Â Please relocate the coffee!
Oh...and try a "Shave and a Hair Cut". Â
I like this place. Â But the last visit was mildly upsetting. Â We hopped in the day of the the Providence St Patrick's Day Parade and 5K. Â Clearly it was going to be busy...but it wasnt as busy as other places we had come from. Â With that said....they were out of Guinness AND corned beef. Â WTF!? Â The waitress said it was because they didnt think they were going to be busy....ummmm...Irish bar...with a parade and 5k?? Â Oi!! Â Another downer was that the bartender was scooping ice with the glass they were serving with. Â Another no no. Â Jut saying. Â
All In all...usually a great place to grab a massive sandwhich, some wings and a beer.
So update on Murphys:
1) Murphy's stayed open on Friday night during the blizzard when everything else in Providence seemed to shut down. Â Mad props for that.
2) We've made a serious dent in their menu, and found it's nearly impossible to find a meal that resembles something healthy. Â That said, here are some of my recommendations:
French dip - YES! Â The bread isn't the best quality, but this sandwich has a ton of flavor.
Pickles - YES! Â They are not the pickles you expect from barrels or even from jars, but when you're hungry, heck yea! Â Go for them!
French fries - These fries are clearly frozen. Â But they are addicting. Â You can't have just one.
Burgers - They ooze with fat, but they are so darn flavorful!
Rueben - Get it on marble bread. Â Sadly, not the best Rueben I've had, but still very good.
Onion rings - They are excellent, but they are rich. You can only have 1-2 before being done with them. Â I would strongly suggest you get these to share.
Fish and chips - My least favorite dish so far. Â The fish is very deep fried and the white skin was still left on when I had it on Friday. Â Not the best, ladies and gentleman. Â Stick with the sandwiches and skins.
3) This place can go from empty to hopping in minutes, especially after a PC or Bruins game.
4) When there's nothing on TV, the bartender turns on Netflix, at which point you are subject to whatever banal show s/he decides to put on. Â We had to endure the Dave Chappelle Show and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia on Friday night. Â So make sure you go when some sporting event is on TV.
Awesome sandwiches!!! I usually get them to go and they are still tasty when I get them home...never soggy or falling apart. Their pickles are so tasty, too!
The bar aspect is fine...lots of seating, good, quick service, and reasonable prices. Not much ambiance, just very typical Irish "flair" all over the place. At night there's usually a bad dj or even worse karaoke and it gets really loud.
Start with a Reuben and go from there!
What's that bar with the decades-old industrial carpeting and the endless Irish kitsch? Save the modern aesthetic for the 21-year-old in stilettos and a mini-skirt. I want Allagash White in my pint glass, horrible Tuesday night karaoke in my ears, and the smell of fried food in my nose.
I want elbow to elbow with the facets of humanity. This is where we all become friends -- in the flickering glow of the television, arms stuck to the bar, drunken philosophers calling across our drinks about sports and politics, sentimental so-and-sos cuing up Hootie on the jukebox. Â
Bathrooms relatively clean, a staff everyone adores, and very handy to the URI PVD campus. Plus, complimentary cucumber, green tomato, and peperoncini pickles. My favorite place to get shitfaced downtown.
I don't know anywhere else that makes it's own corn beef in RI. And Murphy's has been making it right for longer than I have been alive. They have a huge menu but why you would order anything but a rueben is beyond me!
The staff are the same people for as long as I have been going and they are not friendliest but they are good at what they do. This is a real Irish Pub and not some chain like RiRa. Expect good beer and big portions. I have never left here with an empty stomach!
Murphy's Deli is a fun Irish pub right in the middle of downtown. you wont find much parking near it, but that's an excuse to see the city as you're walking to Murphy's. the place is very open and inviting. the deli counter is right along the back walk in the bar area and i think it adds a little something like you re almost in a real deli but a bar? if that makes sense hah
we sat in the bar area and we're waiter-ed on by the bartender. at first i thought he might have a tough  time doing both, but he was right on point with serving the bar and taking care of us.
they have all types of deli sandwiches with all the deli type of sides to chose from. and a regular menu of burgers, nachos, soups, salads etc. i got the M3 deli sandwich with was pile high with corn-beef and pastrami with Swiss on rye. Their homemade Russian dressing is on pointttttt. The sandwich was amazing tons of meat tons of cheese which i loved.. they re not cheap on the cheese. I got the potato salad for a side which was great not a lot of mayo which i like and very flavorful.
The prices are very reasonable, for four guys with apps, entrees and drinks our bill was around 70 bucks.
absolutely would come back here.
Murphy's is a way divey Irish bar. The leprechaun decor is way over the top, but the food and beer selection is impression. I counted a dozen taps, and lots of bottles on my visit.
Murphy's has an extensive... reuben menu? Is that a thing? Yes! I ordered their Murphy's Reuben, which was stacked uber-high with corned beef. The burger menu looked similarly impressive.
I'd definitely recommend a Murphy's stop if you're looking for a good beer and some meaty food.
Living in the area I frequent Murphy's almost weekly. Late night and early, I'm always satisfied. Tonight I came in after work for a drink and some food. Debbie was amazing. She is usually behind the bar on my visits and tonight along with other nights was just amazing. Her service was beyond amazing. The steak and cheese I ordered from the late night menu was HUGE! It was loaded to the top with steak and fresh onions and peppers. Way better than some other local places. I was more than pleased. Everything was piping hot and fresh. I would 100% recommend anyone to come here for a quick bite and a brew. This is not fine dining so don't come here with your nose up in the air. This is local pub food done right. Make sure you ask for the pickled cucumbers and peppers. Â Delish! I will be back again soon and make sure sit at the bar. You will be happy you did!
Review Source:Recently went here to eat an actual meal, as opposed to strictly consuming beer, for the first time ever. I was told by Yelp PVD's unofficial wing master that I was making a huge mistake by thinking anywhere else had good wings until I tried Murphy's. You see, I'm new to the wing game, and admittedly have much to learn.
Sat in the general dining area, which appeared to be seat-yourself. I am 98% positive the waitress looked over at the table. She seemed to be a bit overwhelmed with a larger party, directly adjacent to us. When their party was joined by about four more people, they were immediately greeted and served drinks. At this point, about ten minutes had passed. Irritated, we decided to just snag a high top at the bar.
The bartender came right over, and from this point forward everything was great. I ordered 8-wings (don't make fun, this was only my second wing experience)- 1/2 bbq and 1/2 buffalo. The bbq wings paired well with the Kentucky bourbon Ale, and the buffalo washed down amazingly by the Green Monstah IPA. Sadly, due to inexperience, the sauce on my last drumstick caused a freak incident in which I seemingly threw my chicken at the lone gentleman sitting nearby. Sorry sir, and sorry little chicken. I so wanted to eat you.
Will definitely be back for more wings, just gonna' make sure I sit in the bar area!
This place is great. Â Sort of a dive-ish looking place but the sandwiches were fantastic. Â Everyone i was with had the pastrami and corned beef and everyone was more than satisfied. Â We had the mozzarella sticks and onion rings, which were tasty. Â Service was good, atmosphere was good, definitely stop in here for lunch if you're in beautiful downtown Providence.
Review Source:Love this place....dive-y Irish bar but sooo worth it. Â They have amazing sandwiches...the M12 is fabulous.Irish pub...need I say more. Â Guiness is good and if you want a stiff pour..need to come here. Â Holy crap, its only a splash of mixer. Â Thats all you get. Â Does the job!!
When ordering at the bar...get aggressive. Â i'm not used to being pushy but the lady bartender..
(I forgot her name) she's great!
It's a bar. And a deli. Oh Rhode Island the fun things you have to offer. The wings there are awesome. I ordered the sesame teriyaki and they were great. Very reasonably priced. I like that they keep the 'staples' of beer on tap, but constantly rotate a few different local beers. There not always good, but they're local damnit! A nice place to head to after a Bruins game or just out with some friends.
Review Source:I sat at the bar with a friend and had a really good time. Â Service and food was excellent! Â However, when I went to the bathroom, my sandwich (which I put in a to-go box) was THROWN OUT! Â Really? Â I only went away for 5 minutes, and the bar was only half full. When I came back, Â I was offered the sandwich from OUT OF THE TRASH by the bartender!?! I loved my sandwich but I feel like for $10 I could at LEAST enjoy the second half the next day....or an offer of some money back? Â Something? Â Really? Â What an unconcerned staff!
Review Source:I have loved this place for years. Â Although I did enjoy the old grittier location in the semi=alley that is Union St, but the new spot ain't bad either. Â Murphy's is a great little Irish pub, with some amazing reuben sandwiches. Â In house made corned beef piled high on rye bread, some kraut and house mad thousand island dressing, can not be beat. Â
The rest of the menu is jam packed with a great selection fo deli sandwiches, some burgers, soups, a handful of irish fair, and then some ridiculous monster deli sandwiches on the back of the menu, not for the faint of heart. Â Although I do love their reuben, by arteries only allow it on occasion, my go to os their turkey club.. piled high with fresh sliced turkey, crispy bacon and a little thousand island... def on of my favorites. Â Along with the food, they have about a dozen beers on tap and a couple of old surly bar maids to round out the vibe of the place. Â
Definitely a great spout with great atmosphere for anything from lunch, to a few drinks before a P-bruins game (FYI- it gets nuts in there before games, so give yourself plenty of time if you want to grab food) or just whenever.. check em out, you wont regret it.
Great spot for a beer and a delicious reuben. I had the corned beef and the pastrami versions, and the pastrami might be too much to handle for one person. There are lots of "fake" Irish bars out there - Murphy's is the real deal. Feels like you're walking into someone's living room, in a good way.
Review Source:Looks can be deceiving! This hole in the wall on a corner in downtown Provi totally shocked me. Â I thought we were going in for just a little lunch but no, it was a GREAT lunch. Â Salads, sandwiches, apps and entrees, they had it all and YUMMY pickles when you sit down. Â This is a gem and my impression was way more than expected.
Review Source:I LOVE Murphy's!!
BEST CHEAP WINGS. During games and All Day Sunday 25 cent wings!
The buffalo are good, and I just discovered the garlic, they are delicious.
The reubens there are awesome, best you'll find in the area. They have pretty cheap beer, nice bartenders and keno.
They have karaoke on tuesdays, I love it awesome crowd! They always have drink specials and everyone should try Murphys!
I was a little skeptical the first time I walked by this place, but then one of the valets at my hotel told me that this is where all the locals go. Â So, I decided to try it out! Â What a GREAT find. Â They have some great pub food and amazing deals. Â If you go when sports are on, they have a crazy deal on wings which are very meaty and have a very tasty wing sauce on them. If you go any other night or day, you have to try the Rueben! Â One of the BEST I've had! Â The wait staffi s very friendly and they will remember you the next time you stop on by.
Can't wait to make it back just for this pub.
Typical Irish pub but with a pretty huge menu. Â My corned beef hash with poached eggs this morning was excellent. Â Portions are pretty big, I probably should have split mine with my wife.
Service is friendly and the location can't be beat for me. Â
Beer selection is fine, as to be expected at an Irish pub. Â Smithwick's is my usual choice, although because of my love for all things RI and only getting home occasionally, I have been known to order a Gansett draft, too.
Murphy's is firmly ensconced on my list of regular spots for my trips to Providence.
Love this place for lunch. The sandwiches are piled with deli meat but not so much that you can't fit your mouth around it. I appreciate good sandwich ratio. They all come with their housemade pickles. I don't even like pickles, but I sometimes eat these. Very lightly pickled, still crunchy, cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers.
You can also get sandwiches to go.
Great Fresh and Cheap! A irish pub with all the right things - food, booze, great wait staff, great location and home made pickles! I've started going here more and more often. It's clean and very convenient to everything going on downtown. The food is alway a pleaser - I Recommend the Patty Melt - It's done the right way - on toast, mayo and very juicey. The rueben is also tops!
If you have a cocktail ask for a "big boy" glass as the regular pour is kind of jelly jar/water glass size.
Recently started having drag brunches what a riot! (3/12)
Murphy's has great homemade pickles/green tomatoes. Â I could eat them by the bucketful. Â Otherwise, the deli food is passable. Â I once recieved spoiled eggsalad, but otherwise, everything's been okay.
The drinks are pretty cheap and the service is usually just fine. Â The new space is totally void of personality, though. Â I miss the old dump. Â THAT was Murphy's!
What drew me in was the hard cider. Â I spent the afternoon moving into a new apartment and really wanted a refreshing beverage and a good meal. Â My desire for cider luckily lead me to good food.
I ordered the cajun chicken sandwich with seasoned potato wedges. Â The portion size was pretty big and the chicken was cooked well. Â The flavor was great with just enough heat. Â The potato wedges were pretty good, and I'm not usually a big fan of them. Â
One of my roommates ordered the patty melt and the other opted for a burger. Â Both raved about their dishes, too.
For dessert, we all split the Brownie Sundae, which I found to be the most disappointing part of the meal. Â Not surprising, though. Â Places like these aren't typically known for having out-of-this world desserts.
All in a all, a great place to grab a refreshing beverage and a hearty sandwich. Â Will likely be back again!
If you like Rubens then you have to stop at Murphy's. Â They give you a bottle of russian dressing to go with your sandwiches too! Â The Corned Beef and Pastrami combo is out of this world. Â Don't get too fancy, just get it on rye with russian and a pickle and fries. Â So good. Â Stay away from the macaroni salad, not because it is bad, but because as a side, it is tiny. Â
Only complaint is that it can get very packed and they tend to be light on waitstaff. Â Had to wait for a while a few times. Â Still, the sandwiches are out of this world.
Best reuben ever
Business lunch, party at night
Lots of space to chill
I'm what you could call a connoisseur of fine salted meats covered in 'kraut, and to echo Elizabeth C's review, this place has one of the best Reuben's I've ever had. Lots of meat, not too much Russian, and a heaping of sauerkraut not just spread on, but placed on each sandwich half. The 'kraut could be a touch spicier, but really I'm not complaining.
I like popping over here in the middle of the day, just as the lunchtime crowd is pushing their chairs back in. The service is kind of slow, but it's peaceful; the TV's aren't too loud, and if there's 4 other customers there it's probably considered a rush.
Points deducted for the service speed the tiny bathroom which certainly has a line longer than the one for the gentleman's club down the street anytime after 8:00 PM
BEST REUBEN EVER!....Hands down! The corned beef is made everyday, not too salty...the sauerkraut is delicious- slightly sweet and not too vinegary (if that is a word). Im thinking they make it there as well. I save this place for a special, once-in-a-while treat because they definitely do not skimp out on the portion size.
Review Source:Stopped in here late night for a drink or two on a Friday. . . place was full, not packed, but every seat was taken. Â Bartender was attentive, got shots and beers very quickly. Â Had to squeeze into a small bar stool area near the windows to be out of the way of the foot traffic near the bar. Â Great for a quick stop in unless you happen to find a seat at one of the several tables. Â Didn't have any food, though the combination of deli and bar is an interesting one.
Downside: Â 1 bathroom for guys, 1 bathroom for girls. Â No extra stalls, just the one toilet for each. Â Sucks when you have to pee really bad and you have to wait forever and a day for people to do their business. Â Some pictures of the regulars on special celebratory nights at the bar for your amusement while waiting in this small hallway. Â Better off packing it up and making your way to the next bar. . . with more bathrooms.
Stayed here on a Tuesday night on a business trip. Â Nice place to relax (and for us, to stay out of the downpour) and down some drinks. Â Serving decent food late night is a big plus.
Wasn't too crowded being a Tuesday night after a holiday; had a few locals, a bunch of twentysomethings, hottie Asian chick to my right, and some other folks who clearly looked like business travelers (a bunch of hotels close by).
Unusually clean bathrooms.
Tasty, traditional American food and low prices.
I had a vegetable wrap that was filled with broccoli, mushrooms, and cheese. I had to interview someone for a class I was taking, so I was a bit nervous during the meal. I took most of the wrap home, and it was still delicious.
Also--amicable staff, air-conditioned room, and clean restrooms.
