This place has incredible pizza's. I don't venture far from a cheese slice but it's one of the best in San Diego. The place is super mellow, dog friendly, it has fun community style seating & you can even get some awesome craft beers on tap!
I will warn those who go however, especially late night, that the service is pretty horrendous.
I've had several occasions where I was either ignored, given insane attitude or on one occasion forgotten about.
This past weekend I Â went in & let's just say after several attempts at trying to find out when my pizza would be ready I had wasted 25 minutes just to leave hungry & a bit annoyed.
My suggestion is if you go, go during the day & be prepared to wait a little extra maybe with a beer
My family and I visited this small pizza place over the holiday weekend. We had just come by from the nearby dog beach and were looking for some cheap eats. This place was perfect. They sell really good thin crust pizza by the slice and have a small outdoor patio that is pet friendly, so our pups were able to sit down and have lunch with us. We will definitely be stopping by again on our next visit to the beach.
Review Source:AMAZING pizza shop in the Ocean Beach area!! They had an AMAZING beer selection on tap and the pies were top notch and very affordable!
You need to walk past Hodad's (which is still an amazing burger spot..), and try this pizza spot! Amazing original styles and the staff was super cool!!
Love the pizza and beer options here. Â We always come here after our beach volleyball games and have never been disappointed. Â The pizzas they offer are unique and have fun names, the prices are totally reasonable and the staff are super friendly. Â Only downside is it is cash only, so make sure to stop at the ATM!
Review Source:"No crap on tap!". Their slogan alone made me wanna step up to the bar! As I was cruising Ocean Beach I saw the sign that said they had Green Flash palate wrecker on tap and a visit seemed in order. The employees spin dough like pros and pour pints like veterans. A pint and a slice seemed only natural and turned out to be nourishing. When in the area the taps and pizza will not disappoint.
Review Source:Whenever I'm Ocean Beach, I make it a point to stop at Newport Pizza. This place is awesome.
They have a wide local beer selection (I'm not from the area so this makes this a good spot for me to sample the various microbrew tastes of San Diego) and the pizza slices are huge and never disappoint (this is coming from a die hard deep dish fan). Everyone is really friendly and they allow well behaved dogs on the patio (Ferdinand loves taking a nap at our feet after a nice run at the nearby dog beach). Prices are pretty fair too--didn't expect that from a place 500 feet from the water. Really good people-watching if you like doing that--the patio counter faces outwards so you can see almost all the way down Newport.
4 slices of pizza is way more than enough for me and my girlfriend to get filled up. Save room for drinks! Can't wait to come back.
The pizza is good if you get it fresh, but I've definitely had an old slice a time or two. Good beer selection though, they always have something I've never heard of before. I might consider giving them four stars if they weren't cash only.
It also sucks that the line between the smoking patio and the inside of the restaurant can, at times, be non-existent.
(+)
- pepperoni pizza
- nice people
Friday night and I was desperately hungry after my beer at Gallaghers. Since the street dog guy wasnt there (so sad about that) we went next door to this place for some pizza. It was late, not many people there and only pepperoni was left at 3 bucks per slice. I was disappointed there weren't any other options but beggars can't be choosers.
Pizza was great and slices were large, I scarfed my piece down pretty quick, then proceeded to eat the rest of my friends slice lol. Nothing exceptional but still a solid affordable pizza slice.
Workers were really friendly and if you go late enough they might give you a deal on the slices :). Would recommend!
Updated review.... I gave this place 4 stars a few years ago. Now, we're down to 2 stars.
Great beer selection
Great pizza IF AND ONLY IF you order a whole pie.
Cashiers handle money and pizza without washing their hands or wearing gloves
Wait time is usually double what they tell you when it is busy, okay rest of the time. Just be honest and say it is one hour for a pizza, not 25 minutes and then it takes an additional 35.
Service is moderately rude, but to be expected in OB. However, a smile and a thank you wouldn't hurt anyone.
Good food, bad service, and absolutely NO HYGEINE! WASH YOUR HANDS!!!!!
75% of the time I go in here, I am usually a few beers deep. The few times (recently) I have been on a mission solely for Pizza, I have noticed something gross. I understand I'm in OB, and "god made dirt - an dirt dont hurt." However have you heard of the germs on paper money? http://abcnews.go.com/He…
2x now (only one of which I said something- to tired for conflict on the second time) the guy ringing up the bill ( and touching the MONEY!!) also goes and touches the pizza with his bare hands and doesn't wash them. I'm guessing by the staffs appearance hygiene might not be there #1 priority however I don't want to eat the bacteria of anyones hands let ALONE theirs.
I want to like this place - but dude.....WASH YOUR HANDS. Barf.
This place overcharged me twice in a row. The blonde surfer dude behind the counter blinks innocently but I swear it goes in his pocket. Maybe I am giving him more credit than he deserves.
I post this review as a gentle warning to other diners and a heads up to the owner. Craving pizza in OB? Skip it.
Very close to Luigi's pizzeria but better beer selection! I love riding my bike to this place and have a pizza and pitcher of beer with my boyfriend! We can hang out here for hours. It's pretty small and cramped but you can walk of the beer and pizza around the beach! I truly love this place!
No crap on tap! Yummy, microbrew beer! There's always something different on tap!
This place has become a go-to for me at lunchtime. When I need to get away from work and eat good food, this place is great. The 2-hour parking around the place usually facilitates an easy arrival.
Pick a slice and they warm it up, then you can go pay.
The crust is the best I've ever had.
You can watch them flip the dough and put it together, then into the oven.
I've actually never had a beer there, but they have a fantastic selection. Don;t get me wrong, I just don't think having a beer in OB is a good idea for me at lunch- I may not get back to work...
I've tried all the different pre-named selections. What I've come to realize is that it doesn't matter what the hell they put on it, the crust makes EVERYTHING so good.
I don't know how it is at night. At lunch, I took my kids today so that went very well. The staff is always friendly. Sometimes, the music is too loud. But lately- I haven't noticed that being the case.
I'm lazy...now that Newport delivers I'm a happy camper. Thanks for crossing Nimitz bros I know its an extra intersection to deal with but your Zah is so good and I'm lazy. I've had 2 pies from here that made my belly smile!
Sgt. Pepper - yum and the pineapple ham one...I always forget the name. Sooooo gooood.
If you aren't lazy & are on Newport stars for being open late and bumpin tunes. Second the beer selection is aces. They have my favorite Albita selections including strawberry seasonal! Ok...ill give you 5 stars.
This NY girl let's you pass my Pizza test
Love this place- Pizza is delicious. Get a pepperoni slice with added ricotta. YUM! The staff is really friendly and helpful. Usually, this is a late-night stop, which is perfect. I love to just sit at the bar, have a beer, and munch on this delicious pizza..
The location is also ideal. It's right on Newport next to all the good bars, and right near the beach.. Great place to stop in during the day, or after a few drinks at some of the close-by bars.. I don't know too many pizza spots I like better than this one in SD. Try it out!
I come from NY and will say the pizza here is legit. Thin crust. Large slices.
Great spot on the patio for people watching on Newport ave.
Beer selection is bomb and the servers are knowledgeable and helpful in selection.
CASH only and there is an ATM on site.
Not a fan of the smoking, but it didn't taint my experience.
Best part: people walking by think the wall is a mirror, but really we can see you fix your hair and boobies :) And yes you do have something stuck in your teeth.
I have always been a fan of this place. Â Why waste your time on a slice of cheese or peperoni when you can order a Ron Jeremy ( all meat), a Hulk ( pesto, artichoke, sun dried tomato, feta), or even a 'Hoff (garlic, basil, ricotta). Slices are a good price as their most expensive one is a whopping $3.50.
Their specialty pizzas are the best although you have to order an entire pie to have one. Some of my favorites are the Tony Soprano (meatball, basil, & gouda) and the Clint Eastwood ( BBQ Chicken).
They even have a vegan pizza for people who can't /don't eat cheese.
I do wish they offered whole wheat crust.
And did I mention their amazing "No Crap on Tap" list?
I was worried when Pizza Port moved to town but as far as pizza goes, Newport has got them beat!
I love Newport Pizza. Â I will concede that the staff can be rude (I think the one especially rude guy doesn't work there any more though, and the last few times I've been there everyone has been friendly), and I will concede that the wait can be long. Â I don't mind waiting for my pizza though, more time for beer-drinking!
Newport has a great selection of craft beer at good prices. Â They know about their beers, so if you don't know what you want just tell them what you normally like and they will sort you out.
Thursday night is locals night and a 92107 ID will get you $10 cheese pizzas and $2 off pints. Â Can't beat it. Â The pizza is really good, thin crust, awesome sauce.
I especially like the vibe at Newport - I can go as just a normal person and enjoy myself without having to feel like I'll never be hip enough to actually fit in. Â And, last night I was treated to overhearing a dude telling his lady about the brewing process - one especially great quote: "and then the hops go crazy and start eating everything..." Â Oh man, it was so amazing!
I don't like that they allow smoking on the (tiny) patio, including at a table that is actually not on the patio but is right next to the patio on the indoors side. Â Dogs are allowed on the patio, but I'd never want to sit out there with a dog because I would die from second hand smoke inhalation before I got my pizza. Â And, although the pizza is awesome, it is not worth dying for.
One star for meaning "no crap on tap" but that's it.
I had the hoff it was ok. the ricotta was good for the first couple of bites but when you realize that's the only flavor your getting it gets old fast. My wife had the hulk and she didn't even finish half. I tryed a bite and didn't blame her for not wasting calories.
Cool bar spot lots of beers. If you don't like cigarette smoke make sure you sit towards the bar there was about 5 people lit up at the patio area.
Go to surfrider instead and get the 2 slices w/ soda deal for 6$ the signature is BOMB!
Sorry Newport p&a I wanted to like you
Gotta update my review to reflect the service & quality of food I received tonight.
I've been trying not to eat cheese, so I wanted to order their vegan pizza. I was super thrilled that they even offered that on their menu. Unfortunately, after our experience tonight, I would never order their patchouli pie (vegan pizza) again.
First of all, the guy on the phone had no idea that they even HAD a vegan pizza option (which they clearly do on their menu), and was super confused when I ordered. The pizza is supposed to come with as many veggies as you want, and no cheese. Sounds OK, right? Well, we ordered a couple of veggies on ours, and when we got the pizza they had totally gypped us on toppings. I would expect since the pizza didn't come with anything BUT veggies on it that it would have been loaded with them, but apparently no. The crust was way overdone/burnt and shattered when we bit into it. We ended up throwing a lot of it away, and it REALLY bummed me out cause it wasn't cheap.
It also took them an hour to get our pizza to us, but the guy did say it'd take that long, so no stars off for that. From the way it tasted, they probably baked it for an entire hour then rushed it over (since we're only a few blocks away).
I don't think we'll be eating here anymore. Shoddy service on the phone, really awful vegan pizza. Just, no. :( OB needs a better pizza place with cheese-less options ASAP!!
Usually a favorite and a must every time I go to Ocean Beach. Â I'm sad to give only three stars this round though.
We walked into a crowded room (no surprise on 4th of July weekend). Â The table that was left was very dirty and we had to get it wiped down. Â The floors were equally dirty. Â The seats are horrendous and very uncomfortable and you feel like you are sliding off of them. Â I kept having to play musical chairs to find one that would do. Â I sure wish they didn't take out the comfortable booths that they used to have along time ago but I know they needed extra room for the masses that come in here.
I ordered the Happy Hippie Pizza and this time around it wasn't as good as the first time I ordered it (I wasn't a happy hippie). Â It needed some salt for taste. Â So my next slice was a pepperoni slice. Â Always a favorite and a sure winner. Â It is fun to watch the girl make pizzas and watch her toss the dough in the air.
My significant other ordered the Deschutes Twilight Beer with his pizza and it was pretty good. Â They gave him a nice size sample to try it before he bought one. Â We spent 16 dollars here today and we got 4 huge slices of pizza, one beer and one Coke. Â Be sure you have enough cash on you since they don't take credit cards.
The music is way too loud here and you have to scream for people to hear you talk. Â All in all it was a fun time I would say despite the setbacks at first.
I have been known to stumble into Newport Pizza a time or two after a rough n tough night of OB nightlife and cocktails... and yes, I actually have eaten this pizza when sober. Â
Drunk Tiff gives the pizza four stars. Â Sober Tiff gives the pizza two stars. Â
However, sober or drunk, the employees here are fucking awful. Â Sure they have their moments (I have gotten free pizza here more than once), but even free pizza can't make up for their usual horse-shit attitude.
Once upon a time, I went in and ordered a slice of THE HOFF. Â Instead I was served THE HULK. Â The guy serving up the pizza said I ordered The Hulk. I politely said, no I definitely ordered the Hoff. Â At this point he got very angry. There were quite a few pieces of the pizza I actually ordered sitting in the glass display, JUST WAITING FOR ME TO EAT THEM, so I asked him to give me THE HOFF instead, to which he refused. I ain't too proud to beg, so I politely asked him again if I could get a slice of the kind of pizza I wanted and again was rudely denied. Â
Feeling quite defeated, I took my nasty green monster pizza and headed towards the door. Â At this point I was given the double flick-off and a "don't ever fucking come back" from the dude. Â I did not go back there for a few months, and when I did, I was shocked to see the same piece of shit guy working there... Â who the hell runs this place?!? Â
Mediocre pizza served with a side of PSYCHO. Â No thanks...
The best beers in Ocean Beach can be found not in a bar... but in a pizza parlor!
This pizza parlor and bar at the end of Newport serves up some fine slices and craft brews at a decent price. Â When you're pining for some carbs to fill up that beer belly at the beginning (or end) of the night, Newport has your back.
One of the most infamous O.B. drinking stories our hero's friends keep retelling him involves one night when he purchased a slice of pie and dropped it on the ground (cheese side on cement) next to a garbage can. Â Our hero then proceeded to pick it up, blow it off, and continue chowing down on that thin crust goodness. Â The pizza is THAT good. Â Or perhaps he was THAT drunk.
TIP: Hang around outside the entrance of the shop just after they close and you can sometimes score even cheaper slices from the workers selling off the leftover pizza at a discounted price.
PROS:
- Great craft beer selection. Â Their motto of "no crap on tap" really is true!
- Some pretty good slices of pie.
- Secret under the table "closing special".
CONS:
- Grungy crowd.
- Servers aren't the friendliest in O.B., and they pretty much do their job like it's a jay-oh-bee.
My first trip to Ocean Beach proved to be an eye-opener for a young and naive southern boy like myself--not just because of the eccentric populous, but because of Newport Pizza.
"No Crap On Tap" is a comforting phrase to a beer lover and the fine folks at Newport keep their promise by packing in some of the best local, regional, and national craft brews on tap. The pizza is a no-nonsense take on an American dietary staple, and while Newport's not reinventing the wheel, they're no doubt giving it a good spin. My Greek/The Hulk slice was pretty good, although the artichoke hearts might've been slightly harder than what I'm accustomed to. The Hasselhoff, however, is AMAZING! I had a Lighting Porter to wash it all down. A better meal for the price would've been hard to find. $6 for a beer and a slice? Yes please!
There's truly nothing that can top good pizza and craft beer by the beach, no matter how long the lines might get....and at Newport they get LONG. Good luck finding a table, but who needs to sit after spending a day lounging around on the beach?
Stopped in the other day for 2 slices and automatically this pizza joint gets an extra star for doing slices. It's so nice to be able to walk into a pizza place by yourself and order a meal perfectly sized for one person. They also get an extra star for having a pretty nice selection of local beer, which for a place as tiny as it was really unexpected. The third star that I'm giving is due to the fact that they are very dog friendly. I'm not a dog owner yet, but I still enjoy seeing them allowed in restaurants for a potential post meal pet session.
Unfortunately for this particular review the stars are stopping there because the staff was probably nicer to the pooches than they were to me. Don't get me wrong if it was outside in public I'd be nicer to a dog than me too, but I was a paying customer and got treated somewhat rudely.
I asked a few questions about the pizza and the guy who fielded them just had a horrible attitude, and this look on his face like "if you ask me another question I'm gonna jump over this counter and punch you in the nose." Seeing that OB is usually full of pretty chill people, I'm guessing his Sampson was away on a yoga retreat or something causing the bad mood. Still I don't like someone else's bad day taken out on me.
The slices I ordered were good, but not the best. Had I not been scared of the outcome of asking another question I may have been able to give an extra star for taste quality. But not yet.
I live close by so I'm sure I'll be back to give it another try. I just hope the dude I encountered either isn't there or smokes some really mellow weed from Mr. Nice Guy before he comes into work.
Amazing pizza slices that you can order to go & eat at the bar next door.
The slices are huge, crispy, & delicious, and I am missing them right now. Pepperoni is awesome.
They lose one star because they are cash only, and I loathe a cash only policy.
If you are in Ocean Beach and do not get a few slices while you are here, then your life will be an empty pit of despair.
All I wanted was a couple of slices of pizza. Â I got a couple of slices of heaven instead.
It wasn't so much that the pizza was good - I had the Ron Jeremy and the Donald Trump and they were sufficient as far as pizza goes. Â I was more impressed with the beer selection.
Yes, Virginia, you could find these beers at any one of our fair city's major beer snob bars, but how many of those bars are located steps from the beach?
Yea, I thought so.
The second slice of heaven was the girl working the pizza oven. Â Something about her working that dough, tossing it up in the air to form those perfect pizza sized shapes. Â The way she spread that pizza sauce on that dough with that ladle, how she went elbow deep into the mozzarella and the way she sprinkled that cheese on that pie. Â And the other toppings - oh the toppings. Â How she distributed that pepperoni over the top of that pizza with machine-like accuracy sent chills down my spine.
Her deft maneuvers - working on pizza, loading up slices in the oven, back to working on pizza, loading finished slices onto paper plates, loading in pizzas for baking - were a welcome respite from my Saturday adventures.
I think it's time for a song...

That girl makes pizza, a pizza girl
she bakes them pies like she out of this world
Her slices are fine, but they can be beat
but that don't matter cause she's oh so sweet!
Pizza girl!
You are my world!
You are so sweet!
And quick on your feet!
Pizza girl!
All I want to say
I wish I had you
Instead of DiGiorno today!
Last Friday I could have been found here consuming (but not able to finish) 1 Veggie slice, 1 Hulk slice (pesto, olives, sundried tomatoes, feta) and a beer I can't remember the name of (Angel's Alley maybe?) Â The service was great- it wasn't busy, and they indulged us by answering our questions... seriously, I know it's a pizza place and pretty self-explanatory, but I'd never been, and I wanted to know. Â They were rocking out to the Misfits when I went in, and there's nothin' wrong with that. Â
The only drawback for me was the size of our beer glass as compared to the price (it was in one of those shallow goblet things.) Â And we all know what a lush I am- I like big beer. Â :) Â But still, $10 per person for 2 slices of yummy pizza (mine was finished for me by my cohort) and a beer ain't bad. Â Now only to move it to my neighborhood...
