This is a great martini bar with awesome music. Â Now only if they can get a real bartender that serves quickly and doesn't forget to actually serve you it would a 5 star place. Â OK, it was busy and he was the only bartender, so , OK. Â This isn't a place for most 20 year olds. Â If you like dancing and cool 50s swing music, you should try it. Â We'll be back when in Asheville again.
Review Source:My wife picked out this restaurant for a nice romantic dinner for our anniversary we were celebrating in Asheville. Â Reviews looked good. Â Had 7:00 dinner reservation; arrive a few minutes prior. Â Seated immediately. Â Waitress was friendly. Â Wife order Chicken Marsala and I ordered a ribeye, medium, with garlic mash potatoes and vegetables. Â Meal arrive about 30 minutes later. Â Immediately presentation was poor. Â Steak was dry and grey in appearance, no juice on plate, cut into steak and it was grey and very tough to cut. Â Have to work to hard to get the knife through. Â This steak should have never left the kitchen. Â Called the waitress over and asked if the steak looked right to her. Â Asked in a nice way... Was being patient but disappointed. Â She offer a replacement steak, but she could not confirm it would be better. Â ((Red flag... Concerning). Â Decided since my wife liked her chicken to try to find something else. Â Manager came over. Â Offered another steak or something else. Â Tried the ribs. Â Looking forward instead to some juicy ribs. Â Wife finished dinner. Â My order came out. Â No steak knife, thought these should be tender, could not cut into them. Â Asked for steak knife really trying to make a go of it. Â Steak knife... Hard to cut. Â I am a fairly muscular man. Â Finally got 3 ribs separated. Â They too were very grey as the might be, but dry except where the scattering of barbecue sauce touch. Â Very creepy. Â Gave up. Â Wife had had coffee. Â Called for the bill. Â They did not charge for steak or ribs, but charge full price for rest. Â Manager did not come back. Â Sent waitress with check.
Went to restroom and it was very dirty and reminded me of a cheap bar or gas station. Â Did not match decor of what appeared to be a classy place.
Will not go back. Â Will not recommend. Â Avoid if looking for good food.
My friend and I dropped in on a Saturday night. Â There was a swing band playing and people dancing. Â We propped ourselves at the bar and ordered drinks. Â Our bartender seemed "far and away." Â When she finally took our order, she gave my friend a Pinot noir instead of the Pinot Grigio she had requested.. Â My friend drank it anyway . Â I ordered the spinach artichoke dip. Â It was smaller than expected for two people. Â As far as taste goes, it was creamy but could not top the dip I had at a hole in the wall place in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
Review Source:You will love this place for the drinks, atmosphere and the live music. The food is average and the service is friendly but slow. We didn't mind since we loved the music and had fun drinking and dancing. Our kids love this place and they are only 8 and 12. They always choose it for special occasions.
Review Source:Really nice meal here. It wasn't particularly  crowded, but it was still on the early side. Had a few local Highland porters on tap. I had the black and bleu salad and it was very good. Ordered the steak medium rare and it was a little overdone. But the veggies were fresh. My husband had the Brie sandwich and inhaled it. Great location in lovely downtown - walking distance from a few hotels.
Review Source:Went there on a Wednesday night. Â Not very busy but a very friendly atmosphere. Â There were two people working the place (Mary and Peter) and they were very friendly and wonderful. Â There was also a band performing...the lead singer (Heather) was great. Â She did all of the greats from the 40s, plus she was also very friendly. Â She came over to where we were sitting several times to chat.
I would highly recommend the smoked trout spread...it came with a small salad and pita bread and was just right. Â My husband had the personal pizza and said it was nice.
The decor was also nice...big comfy sofas and nice lighting. Â We were in from Chicago but this is definitely on our go to list when we come back in town.
I was in here on a random Tuesday night, it was dead. Dead, dead, dead. Butttt that didn't stop this decently sized bar from having an AWESOME live band. In addition, the bartender was nice and on top of my drinks. It was decently priced, and I had a good experience. The live music was an added bonus. I will be back!
Review Source:I wish I'd read Yelp reviews first -- sounds like overall it's not a good place to eat !! (and what restaurant has just a few tables filled on Valentine's Day ? That's a clue.)
Had a party of five so tried many items on the menu - can't say any one of them was worth ordering again. We were the only diners in the restaurant yet service was still only so-so. In fact, while ordering, our server asked us to "hold on" while she left to answer the phone. She couldn't even make her one table feel special !!
First, the positives: Nice atmosphere, great live music and a decent drinks menu including about 20 beer taps and some good wines. The clientele ranged from 20's to 60's. There are several comfy couches if you just want to have drinks and enjoy the music. Now, the negatives: Service was polite but slow. We had to wait awhile for our drink orders to be taken, and quite awhile longer after getting our drinks before our food order was taken. My wife was almost finished with her salad before my appetizer came out. When we got our entrees my wife said that hers was quite good, but my salmon was very soggy and it appeared to have been sitting awhile. I suspect they held it under the warmer due to the appetizer delay.
Overall it's a great place to go for drinks and dancing/music but I would  suggest eating elsewhere or just having appetizers/snacks. Their menu is extensive, featuring a full page of "small plates," entrees, pizzas, sandwiches, etc. I would recommend scaling down the menu and focusing on quality over quantity of items. It's hard for the kitchen to excel with this kind of variety. Improve the kitchen and this place could easily go 4-5 stars.
Classy bar and restaurant in downtown Asheville. Â With dark wood, an expansive bar, couches, open layout and minimal lighting make Olive or Twist a great place to enjoy a good martini. Â Problem is, they don't make good martinis. Â The location and ambience is great, however their food and drink didn't come close. Â Maybe it was an off-night (it was Christmas night, so I wouldn't be surprised), but tried two martinis off their very long martini list, at $9 a pop, which were tasty, but not $9 good (read: not that much alcohol, not large drinks). Â Okay, maybe an off-night. Â Tried their pimento burger with fries. Â Came out on the cold side, small burger, and the fries were terrible. Â But I'm not going to let this damper my review. Â I still think it's a great place (okay, so maybe the service was a bit off too...but again, it's Christmas, right?), as it has all the right elements of a great restaurant/bar, just don't set your expectations too high when checking it out. Â I think a great time to visit is when they have live music, which may help balance out some of their areas of improvement.
Review Source:We stopped by on a chilly Sunday afternoon for Sunday Funday! It was fairly empty when we arrived for the 4pm fball games, and didn't really strike us as a place to watch football but it had the fball package advertised outside. My boyfriend tried two of their martinis and thoroughly enjoyed both! I stuck to draught beer, which they have a good local selection in addition to a few more mainstream choices.
The service was not bad, I did notice closer to 6 or 7 it got slower as the place filled up a bit more with the dinner crowd.
As far as good we only tried two apps, the calamari was pretty good but the spinach artichoke dip was pretty disappointing, watery, and where was the spinach and artichoke?!?
We enjoyed our time but wouldn't rank it as a place we'd definitely return to.
Came here for desert and dancing with bf and his parents.
The saturday live Jazz band was very nice and played a good assortment of music. The dance floor was large enough and it wasn't too packed.
We didn't have anything besides the Monte Cristo cocktail. It was amazing!
Only negative was the service. I think they were understaffed - had difficulty placing an order... then they ran out of martini glasses...
In the end, it was a great time!
The husband and I stumbled upon Olive or Twist by complete accident. Â We were about to call it a night, after bar hopping. Â But when we heard the lounge singer with backup honky jazz band, we knew we had to stop in and check it out. Â Not that we are too terribly into honky jazz, but we dig the retro vibe of lounge singers. Â We actually ended up coming here both nights during our Asheville visit.
Olive or Twist has your standard martinis, but they have some exotic flavored ones too, which definitely peaked my interest, as Appletinis typically don't do anything for me taste wise (but they do get me drunk). Â The 2 martinis I had were the Astro Pop and Lavender Lemon Drop. Â The Astro Pop tasted just as you would expect and it invoked nostalgic memories of eating those red, white, and blue popsicles as a kid. Â The Lavender Lemon Drop was OK. Â Unfortunately, the first time around the bar tender accidentally used salt instead of sugar on the rim of the glass. Â Salt and Lavender-Lemon do not go well together. Â It's an honest mistake and the bartender did fix it.
The first night we went, the people watching was fantastic. Â There were a bunch of old farts slow dancing to the honky jazz. Â It was cute and I hope to be one of those old farts one day. Â But apparently one of the guy old farts had a few too many martinis and got into a fist fight with another guy old fart after someone rubbed on his lady friend the wrong way. Â I couldn't help but find this old guy fist fight to be a bit on the funny side.
My girlfriend and I went for dinner on Valentine's Day. After a snafu at another local restaurant, I made last minute reservations through Open Table just 30mins prior to our reservation time. We showed up a little early only to find a sign that said "Please seat yourself" and maybe 3 other couples in the restaurant. We sat down, and had a good meal. The Spinach & Artichoke Dip appetizer was really quite good, as were the Fried Green Tomatoes. I had the Bone-In Ribeye which was a special that night. It was well cooked, though wasn't the best cut of meat. More chewy than better ribeyes I've had in the past. Cooked appropriately.
Overall, I would say our meal was pleasant and the food was pretty good. The ambience was a little awkward with such a space and only a handful of other people there. There were only two waiters staffing both the restaurant and bar.
I tried this restaurant while visiting Asheville on business.  The restaurant occupies an interesting building on the edge of downtown.  We arrived around lunch time and found the dining room near empty with only a few other diners.  The menu comprised of a good selection of sandwiches and salads along with personal pizzas all in the $9-15 range.  Sandwiches are served with a choice of hand cut fries, home made chips or onion straws.  I ordered a veggie hoagie with fries.  The food arrived quickly, hot and fresh.  My sandwich had a flavorful mixture of peppers, onions, mushrooms  artichoke hearts and fresh spinach.  The roll was a little soft and would have been better on a crustier bread.  The fries were excellent as was the service.  Would visit again.
