We stopped in our local neighborhood bar & grill for lunch largely because they were a participant in the fundraiser for JJ's and oh how we were rewarded.
We were greeted and seated immediately. We were warmly and enthusiastically greeted by our server Diane. Â She explained the specials, offered advice (it's been quite a while since we'd been in) and fetched our drinks.
I had the soup/salad combo (you can combine any salad, soup or sandwich into a combo which I love - some restaurants mysteriously restrict these options). I chose the clam chowder & bleu pine salad. The clam chowder was the best I've had in Kansas City hands down. It was thick & creamy with large chunks of potato & clam. MMMMMmmmmm. The salad was delish also with a tart citrus vinaigrette and just the right amount of bleu cheese for balance.
We'll be back!
O'neil's is a terrific restaurant tucked away in a strip mall in Leawood. It has the most loyal customers of any restaurant in Johnson County. This isn't a restaurant for people that are looking for trendy upscale fare. O'Neil's is all about comfort foods like Pot Roast, mashed potatoes and Apple Pie. They do these kinds of foods exceptionally well. The servers are all very attentive and the place runs like a well oiled machine thanks to the owner who is always on hand. He seems to know everyone in the place.
Here's a couple of my favorite items on the menu. These have never let me down and I'm always thankful that I have come in after ordering these.
-Somerset Chicken Salad
-Pot Roast
-Salmon Burger
I always order the mashed potatoes with Cabernet Sauce. I'm addicted to that stuff.
Good but not amazing. Â Just another KC Irish pub that isn't really all that Irish. Â The food was decent, the atmosphere and service were decent, but nothing was especially remarkable.
Since we have been on the tour de bread pudding since getting back to KC, we had to try it here too. Â It was old school bread pudding, made pretty traditionally, but a little too slimy inside for my taste.
Food itself is a 3 or 4 (pick and choose), and the specials are often good.
Bar is a 1. It's comfy for customers but it's a cramped, weird set-up for the bartenders, so they have my sympathy, there.
But, cocktails are sloppy, beer can quickly go flat because the glasses sometimes have a film, bar service is slow, and it appears to be a challenge and a low priority to keep things -- and hands -- as clean as they should be.
When I eat there with family (they *love* the food), I drink water, if anything.
Given the ick-factor of the bar, in particular the problem with hand washing and general food safety methods (e.g., grabbing used glasses across the rim and then touching garnish??), I'm not thrilled wondering about the kitchen. That knocks it down to a 1 overall. Blurg.
The average age of O'Neill's patrons has got to be at around 65. Â Those old people must know what they're doing because the food here is great. Â
The past couple times for lunch I've gotten the Canterburry Pasta. Â Some times before that I've had the Pot Roast and Jambalaya. Â All dishes are awesome- really large portions, a diverse mix of veggies, and all sauces used in those dishes are very flavourful. Â
I also want to point out that service has always been solid. Â The wait staff is friendly, fast, and sometimes quite funny.
Very good neighborhood bar and grill. Â We've been going to O'Neill's since they were at their old location, and we're still big fans after they moved. I cannot disagree more with the reviews that state it went downhill after it moved to the new location. Our experience is that the food and drink quality is consistently high and the meals are very tasty. Service has always been good and prices are very reasonable. Â New location is clean with a nice decor and the outdoor patio is nice with good shade. Bathrooms are *always* clean which is a great sign that someone loves and cares for this place. Â Lots of TVs with sport events on at all times.
I routinely order the Bacon Chicken Wrap with french fries and a beer (my favorite). The on-tap beer is always fresh, never flat or stale. Â I'm also a fan of the beers they tend to keep on-tap. Â Sam Adams and Boulevard beer are always a given and they mix-up a variety of other beers as the seasons change. Â The fries are always cooked properly in fresh oil and seasoned lightly. I've never - EVER - Â had them be soggy, stale or cooked in over-used oil. Â That's more than I can say about most bar & grills in Overland Park. Â The chicken wrap is always with fresh lettuce & cheese and grilled chicken. Â Someone is clearly doing an excellent job of quality control at this restaurant.
My wife loves the Somerset Chicken Salad with tortilla strips, spicy pecans and garlic ranch dressing. Â She also gets the tomato soup and always comments on how good it is. She typically orders wine and has always been happy with the quality.
Pot roast is a special here and is very good as well. Â Burgers are good and fresh, but nothing special. Â Just a good basic burger. Â Had their raspberry cobbler once and it was amazing.
Downsides? Â it can be VERY busy in the evenings on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Â O'Neill's has a lot of loyal customers and they pack the house during these nights. Â A lot of blue-hairs favor this place and they tend to eat early, so it fills-up around 5 PM and stays that way until 9 PM. Â If you're a people watcher or want to be seen by others, the outdoor patio isn't for you. Â It faces the back of a Catholic school and there isn't much to look at. Â The exit onto Mission Road is also a pain when you're leaving.
Always consistent, much more than the standard bar food, O'Neill's is a great place to bring family, friends or a client. The staff is very professional and very friendly. They make you feel like you're in your fav neighborhood bar/grille, which they are. This is one of the rare gems that deserves Six stars!!!
Review Source:This place used to be great but then they moved...not so great anymore. Â I've heard this from lots of people who used to love it but say it just hasn't been worth trying lately. Â
Maybe it's the new location, maybe it's that PV has experienced a boom of new restaurants.
Personally, I think the quality has just gone downhill.
I can't believe I had never heard of this place until recently when my friend invited me to a Boulevard beer dinner there.
For the Boulevard beer dinner, they setup a room in the back which could probably be rented out for a small event. Â They had 2 dedicated servers who were very attentive throughout the evening and there was plenty of space for the group of people there, including the Boulevard hosts.
The beer and food pairing was extremely good and I thoroughly enjoyed each combination in it's own way. Â Now I expected the food to be pretty good, but I was very impressed with each part of the 5 course meal, each of which was accompanied by a tasty Boulevard beer pairing.
We started out with Bruschetta and Spinach and Parmesan dip which were both very tasty. We then had one of the best Buffalo Chicken Salads I've ever had. Â Nothing crazy, just a balanced combination and solid flavor. Â For the entree, we had the Irish Pot Roast. Â Best Pot Roast I've ever had at a restaurant. Â Amazing. Â I can't wait to go back and get it again. For dessert, we had the Candy Bar Pie which was sinfully delicious.
Overall a great experience and I look forward to going back!
So usually Yelp doesn't steer me wrong, but can't say this place impresses. It's not bad by any means, just not memorable? The drinks were so-so at best, the food the same. Their waffle fries are great, the fish nothing to write home about. The veggie burger should be avoided at all costs--ew. Of course, few people know how to make a good one.
The waitress was very friendly and the atmosphere relaxed. If I lived next door, I could totally see stopping by and ordering fries. But otherwise, it's nothing to go out of the way for.
O'Neill's is by far the best restaurant EVER! The whole menu is delicious and I always have a hard time choosing what I want to eat every time I go there. The staff is great as well! The managers walk around making sure each table has everything they need and the servers are very attentive and will make sure your experience is pleasant. The atmosphere is welcoming and cozy and a great place to have a meal rain or shine. The patio that they added when they moved is a great addition. They also have a private party room! I can't say enough great things about O'Neill's. You have to experience it!
Review Source:Obviously, O'Neill's is doing something right! Â It's always packed (and has been for years)! Â Eclectic crowd, from younger to older. Â Very popular with older neighborhood folks, with early-bird menu offerings, but by no means an old-folks place. Â I've eaten there numerous times and the food and service have always been good. Â They make a good Reuben sandwich and tasty fish and chips (and have plenty of malt vinegar to douse them in)! Â Not haute cuisine, but a great neighborhood place with good food that's good value. Â What's not to like about that?
Review Source:Well, I have been won over by this odd little Leawood gem. Â It moved locations sometime last year, or early this year, presumably to make room for the monstrosity of a Walgreen's, situated catty-corner from the pre-existing CVS. But that's another story for another day.
O'Neills bar area is set up pretty nicely, with a large U-shaped bar, flanked by 6 (?) booths on either side, and tall tables behind it. Â Lots of rich wood, and dark leather. Â We've gotten to know the bartender, as we're there on most tap special nights; you can even get a Guinness for $2.75 on Mondays! Â I've been to many bars who cut half off all beers EXCEPT this favorite stout, so I give them bonus points for that (though they get a solid 5 stars from me regardless).
My favorite item on the menu is the pot roast - either as an entree, with mashed potatoes & crisp vegetable, or as a barbecued sandwich, the meat is tender & succulent, with great homemade flavor. Â Our favorite dish NOT on the menu is the T&A Nachos - order the Tijuana Nachos, but substitute their crisp, thick cut waffle fries. Â Oh, and ask for ketchup instead of salsa - it's a much better combo. Â They're coated in their homemade steak chili, and gobs of other goodness. Â I've had the cherry cobbler for dessert, but we don't usually have room to add on another dish by the time we've scarfed down our hefty entrees!!
Even on a busy night when we've gone in just for a couple of drinks, we've never been rushed or felt unwelcome. Â You've just gotta check out O'Neill's if you like Irish food, owned by a real Irishman, in a very un-authentic strip mall. Â Oh, and the icing on the cake is that you can stop nextdoor for some Foo's Frozen Custard afterward!
O'Neils has been a part of my life since it's opened and I've never had anything bad to say about it. Even when I was a lot younger and a lot pickier, they always had something on the menu that I loved.
On my last trip, I ordered the Kansas City strip and it might have been one of the best steaks I'd ever had. The salad's my family ordered looked great, and the new menu items, the stirfry and the veggie burger, looked delightful. Everyone really enjoyed their meal. I don't think I've ever had a bad meal at O'Neil's.
They've expanded the restaurant and moved locations since they originally opened, and it still gets crowded! Lots of people love this place, it seems. The staff is all great and fun to get to know.
Can't recommend more!
Yes...I am a fan of O'Neills. Â This place defies all odds with me. Â The interior is faux Irish pub set in a suburban strip mall setting. Â The food is a variety of entrees from pot roast, meatloaf, fried catfish, club sandwhich, and everything in between. Â Why am I a fan? Â This place is hard to explain. Â They draw a lunch wait EVERY day. Â The place then packs in AGAIN at around 4:30 with the elderly folks for their early dinners. Â During both of these seatings (lunch and blue hair), copious amounts of booze can be seen coming from the bar to the tables....not a typical suburban restaurant. Â Then the evening crowd arrives ... a typical largely suburban mix including families, kids, singles, and everybody else. Â The food has always been OK. Â The drinks have always been OK. Â The setting is just OK. Â Why do I like this place? Â Well...it has "it". Â I have discussed the O'Neills phenomenon with many people....and we all agree that some restaurants just have "it". Â The staff is truly professional with career waiter and bartenders that get "it". Â They have daily dinner specials that appeal to their patrons. Â If you open a bottle of wine and cannot finish it...they are happy to cork it and hold it for your next meal (for most O'Neills folks...this will be the following day at lunch). Â This is the kind of place that has made a name for itself within the micro confines of its ecclectic location. Â The people familiar with O'Neills are usually folks that live nearby. Â This place has become their "joint". Â They close at 10pm. Â They are never open on Sundays. Â When O'Neills is open...they are busy. Â They just have "it". Â Suggestions: Â Their Irish Pot Roast is delicious. Â The Kenilworth Club sandwhich is very good and made with an unsliced chicken breast. Â Their "steak sandwhich" is absolutely delicious. Â They make excellent salads. Â There is something for everyone here. Â They do everything here....there is nothing spectacular.....but they have "it" and deserve 4 stars. Â This locally owned place may not woo you on the first try...but no doubt sooner or later you'll understand "it". Â They also added some outdoor seating last week....small area...but a nice touch.
Review Source:Large servings, excellent service, several TV's all playing KU Basketball. Not exactly an Irish Bar and Grill though, as a friend of mine suggested it was. I'm not complaining though.
Prices were great and the food was even better. This was my first time there. Appetizers are suppsedly half price after 9 PM, can't beat that.
We had a brunch buffet here after a funeral, and the food was excellent. The prices, even more excellent. Get this....
40 people, open bar, and food for all, around $700. Not bad! Beers were half price, so I'm sure that made a difference, but still.
I stuck with the Boulevard Wheat Beer, a KC local brewery. Very good, in my opinion. Our food consisted of: hot spinach and artichoke dip (yum), Brushcetta, Burnt Ends, salad, Â Some pasta in a cream sauce that was delicious, and easily, the best hashbrown casserole I've ever had. Everything was phenomenal .
It was a great banquet room as well. It wasn't huge, but it fit us perfectly. We were even about a half hour early and they accommodated us well... And the bartender and servers were all very helpful. They packaged all of our food to go, even though it was catering style, and they were all eager to help and clear plates. A very nice place to have a brunch/luncheon.
My family LOVES O'neils! Â I only count it down because it's so crowded most times - because everyone else loves it too. Â The steak sandwich and the chicken fried steak are fab! Â I've loved everything I've ever tried here except for the chicken wrap which was average at best. Â Very kid friendly, very diverse crowd. Â The desserts are very good, we love the cobblers. Â Because it's so close we just usually order it to go and eat at home rather than wait for a table with the kids. Â They have a separate to-go entrance in the back which is nice. Â Great staff. Â I only had one bad experience when I ordered a baked potato and had to wait forever because they had just run out. Â It would have been nice it the waiter had mentioned that it was going to be a long wait - I'd have switched to something else because by the time dinner came I was starving and the kids were bouncing off the walls. Â But that was the exception to what is normally great service.
Review Source:Ok, Ok. Â I feel as though it's my duty to represent O'Neill's. Â Please, don't let the fact that I used to work there and have family members working there now dissuade you from reading this review :)
In fact, as a vegetarian I haven't sampled most of the food, so it's not like I can just give a blind great review without thinking. What I've learned from O'Neill's, both as an employee and as a server, is that people come here and find an INSTANT favorite. Â The fact that I never worked a shift (dinner OR lunch) without the place going on a wait speaks for itself. Â Wait has been up to over an hour on a weekend night and people still happily stuck around--come on. Â The place is doing something right.
Coming to O'Neill's on a weekend? Â Fridays especially, be ready to wait a while if you get here later than, oh, let's say 6:30. Â The crowd is diverse--the senior set is DEFINITELY represented well here (as the Early Bird Dinner time will attest), but families, singles, girls night out, and prom/homecoming parties are all represented. Â If you're given a wait time, just elbow your way up to the bar (it gets really...REALLY crowded) and order a drink. Â Fridays and Saturdays come with a $5 off bottles of wine special--an incredible deal.
I know that reubens, the Irish pot roast and catfish dinners are all hugely popular. Â The waitstaff is trained thoroughly and through that, many veteran waiters and a great management team, I doubt service will be bad. Â O'Neill's is also known for it's bread pudding dessert.
Seriously, try it out--and come early!
