I can't stop coming here for a midnight snack these couple of days. Their platters are usually good (a bit oily but will change if you ask them when ordering for less oil/ salt).
The dishes really hit the spot for me. The salt and pepper squid is crispy and adequately salty with the garlic and jalepeno peppers. I loved it!
The veggie dish (tong vegetable with garlic) was overcharged (we were charged the regular menu price for a midnight snack dish size)...
Rice is charged $0.50 per bowl.
It was still great.
The second time we came we ordered the black mushroom with soft tofu ("japanese tofu"). It was a delicious experience as well. The mushrooms were sweet and soft. The tofu was pretty crispy with a soft texture after biting through the shell. I loved the taste that was preserved. All due to the good wok heat. :)
I totally recommend this place. The service was a bit horrible (due to a huge party at the ungodly hour that we went... midnight). We were there for more than an hour because of waiting for the dishes. It was fine. I still enjoyed my food.
They're good for pick up as well. Ordered here several times. We just need to call in to order about half an hour prior to pick up.
We ordered our food at 7:20, deliver time quoted as 8:18. OK, I can deal with that. The time comes and goes. I call the restaurant. I am told the driver is right around the corner. 15 minutes later I call back to the restaurant, I am told the driver is in my lobby. I call my doorman, who tells me no one is there. He arrives 5 minutes later.
(just getting started)
The food....first of all it's called de-veining!!!!! Every single shrimp looked like it just pushed back from a hearty thanksgiving meal. YUCK. Â The fried rice smelled like it was prepared in a sealed room with 20 chain smoking cooks.
Of course all the food was cold.
On a bright spot the Crab Rangoon was tolerable, and might even be good had it been even luke warm. Â I don't know what former glory this place might have had to warrant some of these rave reviews, but it could not possible be this place. Â
As my good friend always says "what in the wide, wide world of sports is going on here?!?!?"
I can not support a place that serves shark fin soup, when I tried to ask them if there were actually shark fins in the soup (illegal) they pretended not to understand what I was asking. Totally irresponsible. I understand it is a traditional dish but it is now 2012 and we know better, it is not sustainable.
On another note, a bathroom in a train station would be more clean that Triple Crowns. Gross.
Came again with family and pretty good. I'll say more like 3.5 stars. Great prices and they give a lot. Service was pretty attentive.
Clams in Black Bean Sauce - These were meaty and not mostly just shells.
Black Pepper Beef - Pretty good flavor.
Walnut Shrimp - Pretty good, just wished it had a little less mayo.
Vegetables (Dow Mui) - Fresh and crunchy....I like it a little softer though.
Chicken Dish - This was fresh and I like the sauce that came with it.
Eggplant, Tofu and Green Pepper Stuffed with Shrimp - This was ok, I thought it had a bit of a burnt taste too it from that sizzling platter. I only ate the eggplant one, but my mom and sister didn't seem to care for the tofu.
If you have a big group, this is a good choice as most tables sit 6-7 people.
This is by far the single most ridiculous delivery experience I've had. First of all, let me say that the food (taste) is not bad but certainly not worth the price. This, however, is why they got 1 star.
I ordered sesame chicken, 100 flavor chicken, and chicken fried rice. There was a bone in my sesame chicken, fine...this happens in cheap Chinese food sometimes (though this place wasn't THAT cheap). Then, I find some unidentifiable object in my rice. I think it may have been burnt mutilated fish based on color and texture but I was certainly not going to put it in my mouth to find out. Furthermore, not everyone in my party eats fish (if that's what it was) so I decided to call for a refund. The lady over the phone was having a hard time understanding my request, so I asked for a manager. She said the manager wouldn't be in for another 2 days. After some talking, she puts someone else on the phone who spoke slightly better English. This man proceeded to tell me that if I want a refund, I would have to bring the food back. I told them I would be happy to give it to their driver if he came to get it since this was a delivery in the first place. He then told me I would have to pay for the driver to go back out and get it. I asked to speak to his boss (who was apparently not the manager), but he told me his boss didn't speak English so I couldn't. This whole process took about 15 minutes, and at the end they just hung up on me. Well, I told them I was going to leave a bad review so here it is. Please don't order from this place, this isn't the type of business one should support.
This is probably the worst restaurant in Chinatown. Â The first thing you'll notice is the horrible stench in the restaurant. Â The second thing you'll notice is that the restaurant is disgustingly dirty. Â After that, things get bad. Â The service was atrocious if not non-existent, the food was absolutely inedible - which my stomach agrees with and has seconded for the past week (your toilet begs you not to go to this horrible dump).
To make matters worst, I found out this is not any sort of 'original.' Â This location is where the Triple Crown down the street used to be. Â It has none of the same ownership or cooks. Â The only thing "original" is the idea that a slum landlord can make a decent meal - however, this landlord may be better suited to cooking up spoiled dog food.
My family always come here for family dinners because the prices are cheap and the portions are big. We normally take up 2 tables when we're here so this is the place to go if you have a budget and a big family to treat. The food to me is very oily and greasy. When it's busy the service is VERY slow. Sometimes it'll take 30 minutes for ONE dish to come out after we ordered. Then right after, a whole bunch of dishes come out at once creating clutter on the lazy Susan/table. I personally would prefer dishes to come out at a decent interval ensuring the customers have enjoyed each dish that comes out, but the trend is: wait 30 minutes after you order the food, first dish comes out then every dish comes out at once. So if you like to clutter your table and lazy Susan at once this is your place.
The service here is good, people are nice. Owner is very nice.
The last time we stopped by here we were turned away because of remodeling. Â Now, they are back in business! I had never been here before, but it was a family gathering that brought me here. Â The food here was good and even the elderly relatives loved it. We had the fish soup, jelly fish, sweet and sour pork, crispy chicken, Â scallops, calamari and veggies, steamed fish, abalone, salt and pepper shrimp, and a bunch of other stuff I can't remember! I just know the food was good and was not filled with MSG (because one of my relatives is allergic). Â An extra bonus was that the bathrooms were clean and heated!! Big portions and great taste!
Review Source:I'm always dragged here by drunk friends, but walk out loving it. Â The breaded/salty squid is super good, and so is basically everything else I get. Â All of your normal standbys are very good, and the service is efficient and good. Â I'm always here late at night, so I can't comment on how the service is during normal business hours... usually we are just one of 3-8 tables occupied.
I didn't realize that the OG was really the New-G-Old building. Â Maybe I can convince everyone to go to the new one next time.
When I use to live in SF, the first place I would go when I am visiting my friends and family in Chicago is Triple Crown. No one I know can make salt and pepper anything the way they make it here. The Salt & Pepper Smelt, is the best!! But I love the Japanese Tofu and my BF and his family love the Squid. Yes, it is a whole in the wall and yes they open another location but this is where i have been going since college for the cheap late night menu. Which will also include the beef and broccoli Chow fun, extra crispy noodle, the string bean and pork, and if there is three of us then the black bean and clams. Â I also ask for their vinegar and use to dip the smelt and chow fun to add some sour to it.
Review Source:Dear Triple Crown:
Close down again, and I swear that good, innocent people will die.
My family and I have been faithful patrons for years and when it closed down...well we were lost for a little bit. But I am ever so grateful that it has re-opened-Triple Crown Banquets didn't quite cut it. The food is to die for in all its tasty, greasy, Chinese goodness (Clams w/black bean sauce, the calamari, and the beef chow fun-extra crispy DO IT!!!). 800% of the menu is phenomenal. TC is not a place to bring a date and woo him/her with its ambience. There's nothing classy about it-but damnit this place is amazing. And it's BYOB and that makes it even more amazing.
TC, I am headed your way in about an hour...Can't wait to be in you. Mmmm.
I have been going to this "original" Triple Crown for years and am the biggest fan of the late night menu. Â It's the best deal and awesome food! Â It's also one of the cleanest CT restaurants IMHO.
The BYOB policy makes it extra awesome, but I haven't advantage of that yet. Â Stand out items are salt and pepper pork chop, shrimp with scrambled egg and sauteed ong choy (sp?) with garlic and olive oil. Â Heavenly.
There is a language barrier so, when in doubt, just point to the item you want.
Decent food, albeit salty and oily. But it's Chinatown, that's par for the course. I liked the honey walnut shrimp and the beef ho fun. They gave us soup and this soupy dessert on the house. Wasn't crazy about either but it was free so I can't complain. After dinner I had to walk around for a bit because I felt disgusting. Oh Chinatown, how I love to hate you.
Review Source:this place deserves NEGATIVE stars. I've eaten at this "original" triple crown for years. That is, until only recently. I've since gone over to the other Triple Crown on Wentworth.
This restaurant has the worst service. Led by the female maitre d'. She always used to bring us to the table just underneath a large TV, where it's quite noisy, or brings us to the table closest to the bathroom (and the restaurant isn't even that busy). She refused to take us to the good tables, so we ask us if we can sit somewhere else. She hands us the menus and tells us to go ourselves. What kind of service is this?
Next, after sitting at our tables for a while, the servers would take about 10 minutes to come over and take our order. Still, no tea or water at our table. We had to ask for it.
Food comes - portions are fairly generous, but it's too salty, too oily, and MSG. We always ask that our food be prepared without the salt, oil, and MSG, since we are allergic. They didn't care. They just added ladle upon ladle of the crap unto our food.
We ask for our bill about 10 minutes after getting our food since it's really not edible. They give it to us, and we pay with credit card (chinese restaurants prefer you pay in cash instead of c.c. cause they can hide their earnings "under the table" without reporting it to the IRS- as I've been told by friends who have worked in the industry).
we paid, then started to make our way out of the restaurant. The maitre d' stops us, and tells us" don't ever come back to my restaurant. you're not welcome here". and she starts using the hand motions to wave us out of the place.
What the fuck. I don't ever deserve to be treated with such rudeness and outright discrimination. The maitre d' is right on only one point - I won't ever be going back to "YOUR Restaurant". You don't even own the place bitch. I've discovered the Triple Crown on Wentworth, although quite pricey, to be MUCH better in service and quality.
The last time I came here we had a birthday party with at least 35 people and the restaurant accomodated us very well. They had 2-3 servers working on our tables and being the first table the servers reach my table ended up getting the food first. Score!
BYOB! You can never go wrong with that! My family and friends enjoy drinking so of course they took advantage of it and brought heineken and bottles of Hennesy (sp?). I'm surprise the restaurant workers did not complain to us as to how LOUD we were. You probably could of heard us down the block!
The food was really good this time. I believe we started off with shark fin soup (I never had it before so i have no comparison), but I thought it was flavorful. The crab was nicely cooked in the ginger and onion, yumm so tasty. Our beef chow fun was extra crispy *drools* (it's always the best when it's extra crispy!). I can't remember the rest, but I remember stuffing my face and feeling so full that I was about to burst!
I'm sure I'll be back.
Wow...4 days off in a row kid free! Hes at Grandmas! What to do that's oh so fitting when you have no curfew and are well rested. We found just the thing. Late night drinks at a few local bars and of course topped off with 1am Chinese cuisine. We feel 20 again!
We haven't been out this late in so long. No better time to go than for their half price menu. Yeah portion are a bit smaller, but taste even better past midnight and you just can't beat the price.
2 bowls of rice
Clams in bean sauce
Fish fillets with Chinese broccoli
Salt & pepper pork chops
Blue crab-Hong Kong style. Which is crispy and served dry. If you want sauce try Thai style. 32 + tip!
Are you serious??!!! And we have so much left over. Containers to go please!!
leftover Chinese food is just as good as day 1.
You can steal the name. Â You can steal the crew, but you can't steal the caring service and the customer attention. Â But you can steal the goodwill of 15 years and a great reputation. Â Well, at least you can try... Â and FAIL.
Go to the NEW http://www.TripleCrownCh… on Wentworth and eat well and be happy. It is opened until 2AM and the service is G R E A T !!! I go there every night. Ask for the "On The Wild Side" Menu if you love good, spicy, tasty, fresh, non-oily healthy food. Â
Come to my table and say "Hello." Â And you can Google me at "Chi Kung Gary"
First off, I want to give this place NO stars. Â But, my Singapore Rice Noodles was tasty.
This was by far the worst restaurant experience I have ever witnessed! Â I have worked in the restaurant biz for 15 years now and I have been in the weeds many a time. Â This restaurant couldn't find its way out the weeds with a team of machetes and a GPS. Â
We went there on Chinese New Year, expecting to be busy and have a wait. That wasn't really the issue. The issue was waiting 20 minutes for the complimentary tea. Watching all of the tables around us warming themselves on their tea but us sipping on our water, knowing early that there was no way we going to get refills on our water. When we placed the order, 3 soups, mongolian beef and a very delicious and authentic sounding salty fish and pork belly dish. The server informed me that its a 20 minute wait for the pork belly dish. Alright I said, I'll take the Singapore Rice Noodles. Off she runs to the next table. 30 minutes later we get the mongolian beef dish. No soup for us! 10 minutes later we manage to wave down somebody, anybody and inform them that we hadn't received the soups or the other entree. Much confusion on their part, server comes over and looks bewildered and lost. We explain skip the soup and just bring out the other entree. 10 minutes later, 2 of the 3 soups arrive. Ok great, where is the other one? 5 minutes later the other soup shows. 15 minutes after that my entree finally shows. The server warns me about a 20 minute wait for a dish and I wait an hour for a standard Chinese dish? Â
I decide there is no way I am waiting for a server to bring a bill, so I venture up to pay and am very rudely ignored by a manager. Â Matter of fact she tells me to wait so she can speak to somebody that just walked up in front of me! Â Then promptly ignores me again. Â I tell her that I don't really have to pay I can just walk out at this point! Â I tell her that I am crazy to even be standing here right now! Â Suddenly a bill appears, soups on there that I told to be cancelled! Â
As I left I told all 15 people waiting to be seated to run while they can!
We heard they re-opened, we were excited to come back and eat, but that was where the excitement ended. The odor from the grocery store down stairs got worst.
I found out they changed ownership, but kept they name "Original Triple Crown Restaurant," patrons beware there ain't nothing "Original" about this place. The "REAL" TRIPLE CROWN RESTAURANT moved across the street to Wentworth Ave.
The food was nasty, everything we had was oily and salty. It didn't sit to well in our stomachs.
I'll give them one star though, since they did remodel the bathroom, but I saw a chef not wash after using so it was kinda disturbing when I went back to my table...
Now that we know the real deal behind this place, we will never come back. Adding the word "Orginal Triple Crown Restaurant" is misleading and is a bad business practice, since the "REAL" Triple Crown Restaurant is just across the street and that's the TC you wanna be at! Â The FOOD is 100 times better, cleaner and the staff is friendlier.
OMG!!! Thank you so much for re-opening!!!! I used to come here almost twice a week and was having withdrawls from not coming here!!!!! The food is to die for and I could eat it everyday! Â The new TC was not cutting it. Â I prefer the ambiance and staff here over the "classy" TC anyday!!! Come late night for great food and great deals! Also, it's BYOB!!!!
