I ordered delivery for the first time when I was at work from this spot. The one upside is that it was very fast...20 minutes earlier than quoted, in fact. I ordered the chicken pad thai and the chicken teriyaki. They were both supposed to come with egg rolls, but there were no egg rolls included. The chicken teriyaki said it came with fried rice, but it came with steamed white rice. Both dishes were pretty bland and among the worst thai/chinese food I have had. Did I call to complain so they could try to right the mistakes? No. I didn't think it was worth it since I'm not ordering from here again. There are a million better places if you want Thai, with my faves being Noodles in the Pot by DePaul, Thai Classic in Wrigleyville, Yummy Thai on Taylor, and Snail Thai in Hyde Park. Try those instead.
Review Source:The worst service. They got my order wrong, blamed it on me and then overcharged me saying that if I didn't order over $10 they wouldn't have delivered the food. Ofcourse, I'm told this by the older angry Chinese delivery man at my door after they've already taken my order over the phone 40 minutes earlier. Seriously. Not a joke. I'm not a contentious person but I almost slammed the door in the guys face. Do not tolerate their inconsiderate, lame service for mediocre food. Needless to say the food tasted like crap and I will not be ordering from them again!
Review Source:I used to live in the area and this would be the place I order from when I wanted American style Chinese food. I am Chinese and I find the quality quite acceptible. It of course isn't trying to be authentic, but for Chinese takeout stuff it is always fresh, food piping hot, rice decent quality, and owners friendly. I ordered a number of dishes, even the pad Thai, and liked all of it. I consider this a reliable delivery or takeout place if you live nearby.
Review Source:A below average Asian take-out place. There's pretty much no seating there, and the interior looks old and dirty. I also thought it's really hard to find (it's in the same building as some old hotel).
I ordered a take out through living social. Called the place up to ask for recommendation. They didn't really understand why I was calling at first, but after a while, they told me to get the General Tsang chicken and then bragged about how it's voted best something in Chicago by someone. I didn't find the food noteworthy at all, on the same level as Panda Express. Also, at $14 for the full size, I thought the portion was on the small side. (I finished 3/4 of it for dinner). I'm sure there are plenty of better chinese places in that area.
Worst chinese food I've ever had.
I just moved into the neighborhood and was looking for quick chinese takeout.
They advertise themselves as Pan Asian, I ordered shrimp fried rice, and the thai curry special (w rice and eggroll). The eggroll was nasty. When you bite into it, it oozes mushy bean sprouts and grease.
The thai curry is a fake curry (probably thickened with cornflour).
Worst of all, the food left this icky film/aftertaste of MSG in my mouth. I just realized I haven't tasted MSG in a long time and kind of forgot what it tasted like.
I had not looked up the reviews on yelp until I was about to write one, and I'm actually very surprised at how many good reviews they get, especially like "above average food"..
About the restaurant itself, very tiny, mostly a takeout/delivery joint.
Food came very fast. For delivery, I think there are a lot of other choices for chinese food.
Horrible experience. Restaurant refused to honor online menu pricing once we arrived to pick up the order. Stated that they also had no plan to update it online either as it brings in more business to list the lower prices! Would never go back, completely unprofessional. Food was alright, but nothing special. Very greasy and eggroll was inedible. Go to Jade East - way better prices and food is far better.
Review Source:Great meal, again. The delivery took no time at all.
I had the General Tsang Crispy Chicken and the BBQ Pork Fried Rice. Both were great. This time I used a great Yelp offer. I would call it another successful visit to Tsang's, but, again, I didn't go anywhere. And, I like that.
Remember in the 80s how every single movie showed a scene with the characters ordering Chinese take-out? No? Well, I'm sure there were a few, like... that one where the not popular kid tries to get the popular girl or the guys doing business in suits. Anywho, trends always tend to repeat themselves, so why not get ahead of the ball on this one and order some Original Tsang today!
Delivery takes 40 minutes. I had the Basil Chicken with Rice and Won Ton Soup- Soup was pretty good. It was a generous portion and it was fine- the Basil Chicken I asked for extra spicy- it was not spicy. And it was covered in a sauce- it was Not good. Garlic and Chilie Is WAYYYY better Thai Food- Best I have had in Chicago!!! Go there instead , I would have but they are closed on Sundays.
Review Source:This place is first very small (seats 4-6 people). The lunch special is very funny ($10.00 for entree with an egg roll, and the regular menu item is $9 ?? no soup included at lunch) so you will pay $10 for entree and if you need a soup it is $3.50 and $2.00 for soft drink = $15.50 plus Tax !! what a bad deal for lunch at a tiny place.
I would eat at any great restaurant at lunch for this price. They must be kidding !!
I didnt try the food but I dont think i will for this prices. Sorry Tsang !!
I woke up from a good case of the day drunks on a super fun sunday around 10 pm, craving some Chinese food. Odd, but there aren't a whole lot of Chinese food places that are in Bucktown. So to grub hub I went. Found Tsang's right away, and placed an order, just as they were about to close. I kinda thought twice about it, because they were going to close, and I didn't want sub par food. But I did it anyway. Super fast! My yummy foods were here within 30 minutes. And everything was hot, I burned my little lip on the won ton soup. Delivery guy was nice too. Good food, fast delivery, the end.
Review Source:The food was mediocre at best. The chicken udon noodles were greasy and flavorless. I literally had to add salt and other spices to make it edible. My fiance ordered the chicken pad thai and said his dish was bland. We ordered potstickers as an appetizer. I took one bite out of one potsticker, and I couldn't finish the rest of it.
On the plus side, our order qualified for a free dish of beef fried rice, which was slightly more edible than the dishes in our original order.
I should have heeded yelp's lukewarm review of this place, but I didn't. Won't be making that mistake again!
Ok, so I'm a chicken pad thai connoisseur. Â Tsang's rivals Baisi's. I mean, it's good- it's right up there.
So the chicken pad thai- thumbs up
Hubby got the Kung pao chicken, very fresh and delicious, thumbs up.
White rice and fried rice- average.
Not so good? The pork in the dumplings, won ton soup and egg rolls tastes different. Not my fav. Â The hot and sour soup is pretty standard, not exceptional or anything.
This place is good in a pinch, being that it's literally downstairs and around the corner from us. Â Lan's is still my #1 place, but you always need a back up, like in case the power goes out in your #1 fav place (which actually did happen at Lan's one night, and my husband and I went into a panic!)
So steer clear of the dumplings, pot stickers and won ton...or anything pork.. you should be in pretty good shape!
In an attempt, like all of you, to find good Chinese food, I ordered tonight from Original Tsang.
First off - Â IT WAS SO FAST. In comparison to the standard 45min-1hr delivery time, it was here in, like, 25 minutes, which gets us off to a good start.
The spring roll was phenomenal. It kind of left me wishing I had ordered 5 of them. The egg roll was not as good. Don't get me wrong; it was fine. Just not amazing. I agree with many of the other reviewers in that the crab rangoon was not normal. That being said, I didn't dislike it. It was just, well, different. I was not a fan of the dumplings, at all. While most of the food here is pretty mild, I actually found the dumplings over-spiced. I can't pinpoint the spice, possibly anise? (which I'm not that fond of anyway.) The sesame chicken was pretty good. Not my new favorite, but I can't really complain either. The plain fried rice was fine. The chicken lo mein was actually very good. It was bland, but I've never been wowed by a punchy in-your-face chicken lo mein anywhere.
All around, it was an okay meal. I may order from them again, but will probably continue my search elsewhere. (Unless I have a hankering for spring rolls!!)
WOW!
I love trying all different kinds of food around Chicago, especially Chinese, Japanese, Thai, and Vietnamese. Tonight, I was feeling a little sassy and wanted to go against my usual favorite places and try something new. I picked a great one thanks to http://GrubHub.com (my usual go to delivery guide)
This place exceeded my expectations! (Which I admit aren't extremely high, however, I've had some awful new Chinese/Japanese food experiences)
Very fast delivery (and not a typically awkward delivery guy)
Everything hot and fresh
NOT Greasy (actually feels healthy if you can believe it)
Got to pick half or full orders-which is great since it's just me
Perfectly cooked everything!
I got Chicken Chop Suey, Udon Noodles with Shrimp and Plain Fried Rice
Chicken and sauce is great, great tasting and perfect when I added my favorite Sriracha Spicy Hot Chili Sauce (the Huy Fong kind), the Rice is not greasy or awful at all, and I think it's brown rice..YUM. And the udon noodles- PERFECT! The veggies with it are delicious, as well as the veggies with the Chicken Chop Suey, and the shrimp is plump, juicy, and cooked perfectly (no rubbery, questionable texture and/or dryness).
This place...is one of my new favorites for sure!
I give it 4 1/2 starts, just because I feel like I'm cheating on my all time favorite, Lincoln Park Noodle House
;)
But this place was damn good.
They didn't make a dent in my wallet, online ordering (and tipping with your credit card- awesome), a not-awkward delivery guy, they delivered my food faster than fast (like 20-25 min!) and the food...Very delicious. Yum.
Thanks Original Tsang.. I will continue to try new things spontaneously and will DEFINITELY keep ordering from you :)
:)
3 egg rolls + 1 order of pot stickers + 1 order of chicken lo mein + 1 order of mongolian beef = $40 delivered. Â Huh?? Â Whatever happened to good, reasonably priced Chinese food delivery?
There was something deceptive here, as well. Â The price of each entree was $3 higher on the ticket than it was on GrubHub. Â Looking at the menu they gave us with the delivery, I see they charged us the higher price for a large order (not asked, also not shown online). Â The size of each entree was definitely NOT large, as evidenced by the fact that the beef came with a SMALL carton of rice.
The egg rolls were good, the lo mein was tolerable and the beef was crap. Â The mongolian beef had no sauce and no spice. Â How is that mongolian beef?
Anyway, the endless search for good Chinese delivery in Chicago continues. Â Five years and counting.
Love it, eat here at least once a week. Â My son loves the Crab Rangoon and I love the beef and chicken dishes. Â They use high quality cuts of meat and they are not skimpy on the size of the cuts they use in their dishes. Â The staff is so friendly and appreciative of your business as well. Â They will make whatever dish you want, you do not have to order off the menu and they don't bury your food in gravy as some restaurants in the area do.
Review Source:FREE and fast (30-40 mins) delivery on a particularly drab, rainy night! I ordered the home style bean curd (ask for it spicy), pad thai (generic, large portion for only a half size), and veggie egg rolls (thick, a little greasy, but ultimately very satisfying). I will order from Original Tsang again for the egg rolls and free delivery alone.
Review Source:I found this place to have fairly mediocre Chinese food but considering what we're working with in this city, I thought it was one of the better Chinese deliveries I had and a lot of bang for my buck.
We split the crab rangoon and General Tsang Crispy Chicken with Orange Peel. I'm no expert on either but both were hot, tasty though I think the chicken should have been spicier.
Maybe next time I'll select something with veggies - oink oink.
Yay! Â I found Chef Tsang again. Â My heart was broken when they closed the Wells Street location. Â I mean where was I suppose to order from each and every Sunday of my life?
The old number went to another place and they never disclosed that they weren't the real thing and after a few orders, the cover was blown as it wasn't not my beloved Tsang. Â A little bird told me there was some kind of falling out but that the original was back in business on LaSalle Street.
First off, the girl on the phone is an absolute doll, so friendly and helpful and very polite which makes ordering "unique" (read modified and changed completely from what is actually offered) so much easier. Â The delivery was super speedy and again, very polite, but most importantly, the food....
It was definitely the handiwork of Chef Tsang, delicate balance of flavors, no MSG and really fresh, quality ingredients. Â And again, back to the girl on the phone, everything that was modified was done perfectly, exactly as specified.
And lots of fortune cookies.....I am going to have an awesome new adventure this weekend! Â Yay me!
ALSO! Â JUST NOTICED, NO DELIVERY CHARGE=EXTRA AWESOME!
Quick note: They're actually open until 11pm on Saturday's, but it did take them 45 minutes to deliver.
We gave them a shot last night and weren't terribly impressed. I ordered a spring roll, which was super greasy, and miso soup. The broth was good, but the tofu was strangely melty (no bite to it at all) and there were no noodles. It was definitely lacking without noodles, and it's strange to eat a soup that consists of broth, tofu, and a few onion slices. My bf ordered the sesame chicken which he didn't really like, but I kind of liked it. The sauce was nice and sweet and the sesame seeds didn't overwhelm the chicken like at many other places.
The free delivery was nice, but we didn't enjoy our food enough that we'd order again from them.
I have walked past this place numerous times on LaSalle and wondered how it was possible that they are in business. Â After reading the reviews on Yelp, I finally got up the nerve to give them a try and I was not disappointed. Â The General Tsang chicken was excellent and the delivery was within 35 minutes with a friendly deliveryman (who apologized for being late?!?!?!). Â I will certainly order from them again.
Review Source:The search for good Chicago Chinese food continues.....
I just moved downtown from Lincoln Park where I finally found my go to Chinese place (Lincoln Park Noodle House).
This was some of the worst Chinese food I've ever had. Crab rangoon lovers do not waste your time. SUCK. My Mongolian chicken was bland and just overall bad. I ate about a handful and then gave up and threw it away. The sweet and sour soup was ok. $25 down the hole.
And to top it off the poor delivery guy (looked like a college student) forgot my pop and had to come back. Hey that can of pop was the best part of the meal.
OMG! Free delivery! And it doesn't suck! I ordered from here during a blizzard and it still came in 40 mins! Miracle. This is not the greatest food on the planet. Maybe it's a little bland but it totally works for me. They have online ordering which I love because it is a written record of exactly what was ordered and I have serious dietary requirements/allergies so I need to make sure that everything is clearly understood. My friend told me that this place was a creepy dive and maybe she is right cause I have never been there myself but no matter what the location looks like this is some of the best prepared BBQ Pork Fried Rice I have had. Did I mention free delivery????!!!!
Review Source:I found this place when I was walking around the neighborhood - it's close to Second City and Pipers Alley. It's a cute little restaurant with three tables. They were busy - I was eating alone - and they let me sit at the big table. The food was excellent and the service was great. I ordered an all-vegetable entree with brown rice. It was very fresh and light and flavorful. Everyone was friendly. The owner came out to talk to me - I thought it was just me, but I see from the other reviews, that it wasn't. Simple, healthy, economical food in a friendly, clean atmosphere. I will return.
Review Source:This place has superior Asian cuisine. It is moderately priced, delivery or pickup is fast- and I am not kidding- this food is very very yummy. Any noodle dish or sesame chicken is out of this world!
Another thing I have noticed about other quick Chinese places in the city-is the lack of quality in the meat.
Original Tsang has all white meat for chicken(not rubbery) and very lean red meat as well...
Give this place a chance- you won't be sorry :)
I had quite possibly the best lunch experience at the Orginal Tsang.
First off, Executive Master Chef Tsang is such a nice guy. Â Such a riot and great to talk to. Â He even gave me the recipe to his famous mongolean beef and offered to help me if I had questions. Â Oh, Chef Tsang is a true chef, he proved it to me by showing me his culinary card...he's for real.
Second, the food is asian fusion, covering different styles of asian cuisine: (1) Japanese, (2) Korean, (3) Vietnamese, (4) Singapore, (5) Thai, (6) Hunan, (7) Beijing, (8) Szechwan, (9) Shanghai, (10) Cantonese, & (11) Hong Kong. Â
I had the Dalai Lama Beef with Cumin Hot Sauce lunch special. Â What a deal! Â You get brown rice, a ridiculously good egg roll with sweet & sour sauce, & a healthy portion of meat for only $6.95. Â Also, whatever tea he gave me was awesome and I am convinced it had healing properties.
Give Tsang a try!
This restaurant offers a wide variety of Asian cuisine, ranging from the familiar Chinese (egg foo young, fried rice, Mongolian beef, etc.) to Thai, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, and others. Â
Some of the dishes I've tried include a tasty glass noodle dish, orange chicken, fried rice, and szechwan chicken.
The restaurant is tiny, more suited for delivery or carryout than for dine-in. Â The atmosphere is friendly and informal. Â Prices are quite reasonable considering the quality of the food and the size of the portions.
The only down side is that the place is tiny, not well suited for dining in. Â I would recommend getting your order to go or having it delivered, though to be honest I always wind up eating my food there, because I enjoy the cozy atmosphere and warm welcome by the owner.
