The crust tastes like old school frozen pizza. Cardboard style.

Went here the other day and this guy Tony was working and he was friendly and gave great service! He was funny and seemed to really love his job. He was having fun and in return he made it fun for me.

The pizza was great and the french fries were perfect. I LOVE their cheese sauce. Definitely recommend Pauly's for great food at affordable prices. If you want a good time, make sure Tony is working, too!

He's also pretty easy on the eyes! haha

So so pizza, normal fast food ambiance. Relatively cheap - a plus. Probably more of a two and a half stars.

Good pizza, I guess. My husband liked it a great deal more than I did, but I don't prefer pizza, usually...

Generous portions for a good price.  Yeah I'd have some again. I know he would.

Awful, awful, awful. I wish I could give 0 stars!  This was the second time I ordered from here and they did not do any better the second time. First, the delivery estimate is 50-60 min. Fine. But 75 min later when I finally called, I was told that the drive had an "incident" and should be there soon. I asked if my food was going to be hot and he just hung up on me. Then, when he finally graced us with his presence, he asked for cash when we paid on line with a credit card!  Then to add insult to injury, the pizza had almost no cheese on it. I will never order from here again. Beware!

Ordered a veg pizza and honest to God this pizza would taste good if it was overlay-ed with a Tombstone pizza.  I never had pizza this bad for 17 bucks...seriously, I would stay away and grab a slice from 7.11 or something...eww.

1 slice = a giant slice cut into 2 slices. So when you order 1 you get 2. Not bad...

Like the other reviewers they are right that it does take an unusually long time to heat up a slice. I have a theory that they are frozen or something and that's why it takes so long.. I mean really there is no NYC style display of the pies so them must be frozen and it takes a while to defrost and cook.

Think about it... How long does it take to cook a frozen Tony's.... 8-10... SLice of Pauly's is about 8-10...  But their stuff is better than Tony's for sure...

Get the Malibu slice... Pretty tasty..

this rating is for the pizza and service only.. the service is very slow even when it wasn't busy.. the cashier doesn't greet or smile... few times i came here they just took my order and walk away to talk to their friends... oh and it took like 10 - 15 mins for my reheated slice of pizza to be ready with no one else waiting for their food!

I've tried their sausage pizza and pepperoni pizza.. altho it was a decent price for a big slice of pizza that they cut in twos.. it tasted cheap... oh did i mention they just reheat the pizza the few times i came here? the quality was just not there...

i think i give up on this place.. since the service and pizza isn't that great..

Pretty dirty.  That's gross.  Baskin Robbins napkins?  What's up with that? Too cheap for your own napkins?  Pizza that tastes reheated.  Tummy ache immediately afterwards.  Done and done.

What a disappointment this place has become since "Pauly" took over.  There truly isn't a recipe that they haven't ruined.  It would seem that, in an aggressive effort to reduce cost, they have sacrificed quality.  Was this reflected in Pauly's new prices?  Absolutely not.  As the food got worse, they actually raised prices.  Within a month of the Pauly take over, the price of a large pizza jumped by ~$3.

The food is very below average and the value is terrible.  Please go elsewhere. Chicago has so many better restaurants.  Pauly doesn't deserve your business.

So, so, so awful. Let me preface this by saying, I'm no snob when it comes to pizza. I'm a near-universal fan, from Lou Malnati's, to Piece, to Papa John's. The 2 slices I had from Pauly's, however, both tasted terrible, and to make matters worse, my stomach and I were having a very hostile disagreement within 30 minutes of eating. If you're in  the area and need to grab something quick, just go to Jimmy John's a few doors down and save yourself the misery.

The calzones and pizza are good. I recommend the waffle fries to go with your meal. The prices are also reasonable as far as South Loop joints go.

The one downside is it is a little slow. I usually have to wait 20 minutes for a calzone (maybe that's standard?), but even 5-10 minutes for a slice of pizza, which I assume they are just heating up.

This is crappy reheated pizza. The crust is terrible, the cheese bland, and the sauce isn't noticeable. Oh and the employees are real charmers along with the napkins that say baskin robbins. At almost $5 per slice I can pick up red baron in the frozen food section for less and get a much better pizza. Surely there can't be that many drunk/high people at 11pm to keep this place in business?

This is an enthusiastic 3. 3.5, really.

This location has gone through at least 2 incarnations before becoming Pauly's. I'd stopped eating at this joint altogether because the previous incarnation of it was so bad.

    Third time's the charm!

Stopped by on a fluke because I was going to pass out from hunger before making it to my abode down the street. Got the sausage and...well, if you eat pizza like I do, you know that not all sausage is created equal. The type of sausage, how it's seasoned and also how it's cut makes all the difference between a lousy slice and a great one.

I don't know what Pauly's puts in the sausage, I don't know whether it's beef or pork, I don't know how they season it or how long they cook it. I just know it was damn good!

Enjoyed my slice so much I came back the next day for another. And this is an establishment I hadn't set foot in for almost 2 years.

I have no way of judging whether $4 for essentially one large piece cut in half is a good deal or not. I can imagine that it might be a scootch high for students. The establishment itself is also smallish, minimalist. In other words, this ain't a fancy, sit-down joint. Despite the name, there's not an Italian in sight. For all you see working there, they could have done just as well naming this place "Pablo's"!

Your best bet is a "to-go" order. Is Pauly's better than Lou Malnati's right down the street? Of course not! Blasphemy! Is it a good alternative if you want a quick slice and you need a protein boost? Si!

Being hungry I did enjoy it but not the typical Chicago style pizza I was looking for.  My biggest problem was how bland everything was, especially the sauce.  On the bright side I will say it was one of the most affordable meals I had while in Chicago.  But I've had better pizza by the slice.

It gets the job done for pizza on my lunch hour...the prices are cheap and the portions are huge. Stay away from the veggie pizza but definitely try the garbage pizza.

This is a Pizza Ria, this is like McDougal's in Coming to America. That being said its not all that bad, you will wait a while though for your food.

I have to say I love this place.  Great crisp crust on their regular/thin crust.  And you order a slice and they give you two.  They give you so much, in fact, that it hangs over the sides of the plate.  And the prices are decent and they're open late.  I used to get their wings all the time - the mild sauce is pretty decent but if you're in a hurry, the wings take longer than the za.  Go to Pauly's.  It's good!

Walking back to work from Ace hardware I stopped at Pauly's.  I was happy to see a pizza by the slice joint so i stopped in. The wait was long but it was 12 noon so what do you expect. I had a sausage and pep slice with waffle fries. The pizza was good, not as good as beggar's or italian fiesta, but ok. The waffle fries weren't nothing exciting at all but decent i guess. I will try them again if i'm in the area. The salads looked really fresh.

Came here around 1am while in town for Lollapalooza and staying at the nearby Hilton.  Was very excited to see a pizza-by-the-slice joint still open, and decided to give it a shot after seeing the 3.5 star average on Yelp reviews, and one of the top 'tips' by Ardi E 'I dare anyone to find me a better NY-style slice'.  I have to say, if this is as good as it gets in Chicago for NY style pizza, I feel very sorry for you guys.  In a place like Chicago where deep dish/stuffed pizza is the bread & butter, I should have known better than to branch out of that niche.

Was very disappointed.  Even after bar hopping and therefore losing any sort of discriminating palate, once I opened up the to-go bag and began eating my one slice (which was cut into two slices?), I immediately felt like I was eating a seriously cheap frozen pizza.  Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a frozen pizza from time to time just like anyone, but this is not at all what I was looking for nor expecting.  The crust was not deep dish, but not very thin, VERY crunchy, had clearly been sitting out for a long time, etc.  If you're hungry around this block, I would suggest trying the nearby late night takeout bar/grill just around the corner.  Haven't tried it, but I would have to imagine it's way better than this place.

I've been a fan of the Malibu (white sauce, chicken strips) and the BBQ Chicken Pizza here for a while now. After the Sade concert on Friday, I wanted to top off my ethereal night with a midnight binge of two slices said pizza.

I ordered my pizza, and 5 minutes later someone calls my number only to tell me that they are out of the Malibu pizza. "Would you like anything else? or two slices of BBQ Chicken instead?"

No. I would like exactly what I ordered which is why I ordered it.

I mean, I guess it happens, but I was still disappointed. I asked for waffle fries instead of the slice of Malibu and for the money that they owed me.

Here's the kicker :: I get home and find that they gave me the Malibu instead of the BBQ Chicken Pizza. So not only was it a SEND OFF, but after all of that I still didn't get what I wanted. #EpicFail Pauly's.

This place is okay.  I got the BBQ chicken pizza.  It was nothing special.  It was around $5.  Nice service.  It was very hot inside, there was no AC.  it is better to take it to go.   I'm not dying to go back but will if I need something fast.

My daughter and I walk past this place every day. She always asks if we can go in and get some nachos because there's a pic on the window of nachos.  We go in 2day 2 get some nachos and I felt like we were at the movies. They gave us a lot of nachos and this small @$$ cup of cheese. We had 2 keep asking 4 more. The peppers were not fresh. I know I shouldn't judge a pizza place on their nachos, but the pic was misleading. We might stop in one day for a slice off pizza.

This place knows what it's good at, knows what it's not, and doesn't try to do what it knows it can't do well.

FOOD: 4.5 stars in the glorious universe of gratification food.

To me, this is the closest it's come to NY style, greasy, thin crispy stretchy crust pizza. When 1am rolls around, nothing can quite compare to the first bite into that tomato-saucey, garlicy slice that delivers with no shame.

Garlic knots and boneless chicken wings are not particularly memorable or high-class, but if you are rightfully drunk enough at that point in the night, memorability and class really should not be a serious concern for you.

    PEOPLE:

I've met Pauly, of Pauly's Pizza, the first night I walked in. He is the guy with the gigantic chain of bling around his neck, and will manage to say "extra virgin olive oil" and "Giordanos sucks" at least 8-10 times within a 15 minute conversation. He's a very likable guy with a hatred for fake cheese and a nostalgia for NY pizza while he lives in the Midwest. His life furthermore revolves around extra virgin olive oil and being Italian.

There's an exceptionally bitchy late night phone lady who picks up the phone for delivery. I am not certain who she is, or what she's got up her back end, but these ambiguities seem to make her believe that the fact that their own delivery guy left early= the CUSTOMER is the moron for calling for a delivery an hour before they stop delivery. Perhaps we interrupted her nightly nail cuticle-cleaning routine.

    TIP:

Ask for "ultra-thin NY style crust" full pizza (slices are not ultra-thin), order more than 20 bucks total in food, and ask for "free garlic knots."

The pizza came out fast and fresh, but I found the taste to be a bit generic and franchise-y tasting. Not bad, just nothing that makes it stand out at all. However the staff is super-friendly, and they even opened the doors a few minutes earlier than opening time to accommodate us. If you just need a quick pizza fix and can appreciate great, fast, friendly service, then go grab a slice or two. Just do expect the taste to blow you away.

I tried the garlic knots today. Here we are 3 hours later and  I still smell like garlic.  The knots are a nice size so if you get them you may not want to order them with anything large  because they fill you up. They were well-seasoned and tasty though. I had cheese pizza too. It didn't make me feel all warm and fuzzy like the other time I had it. The crust seemed a bit undercooked and soggy. Not good! Consistency is very important people! Lucky for you that I'm not so put off that I won't return.

Wish I would have found them sooner. Slices are huge but yummy! 4 mins for any slice so you are not waiting long and plenty of choices. The price was good for the slice. Salads are good as well. Staff very nice and very fast.

There are 131 thing about Chicago that I do, in fact love.  I would say that somewhere between 9 and 17 is Pauly's.  Between the slices and the rest, I highly recommend.

Formerly known as "Pizza Ria", it's officially Pauly's now so I'll write a new review. One big slice with one topping cut in two will set you back roughly $3 and change, and they have a fountain machine so you can pour your own drink. The price is right, the pizza while not enormous or really filling, hits the spot in a pinch. They also have huge brownies and the menu also offers salads and Italian ices.

There are tvs on and a nice space to eat in if you prefer, but they do a lot of carry out and delivery. If you live nearby, pick it up - the delivery cost isn't worth the short walk.

My only gripe? The packaging. The pizza is handed to you on a fairly sturdy paper plate, slipped into a bag and stapled. And that's it. Which, and maybe I'm being picky here, means you can't set anything on top of it while you are juggling your keys to get into your building and you can't really balance it over your arm without the plate folding and pizza greasing up the paper bag. I was like, two seconds from mentioning this to the manager last time I was there and probably will in the future. It's not a deterrent, but it's a pain in the patoot.

While staying a few days in South Loop, I took the time in the evening to walk around the neighborhood and see what the offerings were in an area I don't visit often. I stumbled on Pauly's and was smitten.

It's a pizza by the slice place, but unlike other sliceries around Chicago, they take the time to make their pizza, rather than getting it out of the oven ASAP. This allows the crust to get a little harder, a little crispier, and the cheese on top to congeal a bit more. It's a pretty good price, and they bring it right to your table. Not sure how that works at lunch time though. I went in slow hours.

Pretty good pizza in the South Loop.

You can buy it by the slice or get a whole pie. They have garlic knots, and I love those. Imagine a little "knot" of bread covered in garlic and some marinara sauce to dip in. So yums! Staff are super nice and fast too.

You can walk in and order a slice and a few minutes later it's in your hands, ready to eat!

Pauly's Pizzeria is your typical pizzeria.  So don't expect anything else on the menu to be five star dining.

As for the pizza, it's actually quite good (Four Stars).  Sometimes the staff is a little slow, but it's a decent late night option in the South Loop.

Yum!  This pizza was goooood.  I had a slice of sausage--my hubby had the bbq chicken.  We then split the Malibu and all of it was delicious.  (I know, gluttony, right?)

My favorite is really deep dish as I am a born and bred Chicagoan but this NY style pizza was delicious.  The crust was on the thin side but substantial and crispy.   Give it a try!  For $4 you get a huge slice.  In the Loop you cant beat that price.

I've lived here for 5 years now and this place has had a million different names!  We hadn't eaten there in quite a while, so my husband and I tried it.  For the price, its good.  It is not a front-runner for best pizza in Chicago by any means, but it isn't bad.  When you crave something quick and cheap, its great!  The garlic knots are yummy as well!

I was pleasantly surprised at this South Loop pizza place. The Loop has the unfortunate curse of closing everything at 5 P.M which makes it very hard get a bite to eat if you're in the Loop afterwards. Not here...they're open until 2 A.M! At first I was taken aback by the price 4 dollars for a slice of pizza! What they don't tell you is that you actually get 2 slices and that they are generous in size. I had no problems with the taste of my pizza whatsoever. The woman at the front seemed a little confused as to what was going on but, she wasn't rude and she didn't screw up our order. The only thing I wish they would change is the ability to order custom slices. I know I am probably asking for too much, but it would be really cool if you could!

The salads here are terrific.  My boyfriend and I have now gotten a pepperoni pizza and a salad here three times in the last month.  I never thought a pizza place would have great salads but they do.  Also, I love thin crust pizza, and this place has phenomenal crust.  We always have them deliver and the pizza is always warm still when it arrives.  I love this place!

I'm here to drag the score even lower if possible.  This place was decent when it was Got Pizza and then Pizza-Ria.   Chicago can't make a normal style, New York Style, thin crust style, whatever you wanna call it, pizza to save it's fuckin' life.   For whatever reason the midwest can't seem to get the crust right (sorry chicago)...but at least this place used to be passable.  Now it's just bad, overly sweet sauce, crust even shittier than before, the pizza was a sloppy mess when we got it and the delivery took over an hour and a half.  these new owners can die in a fire.

I called here recently for delivery and was surprised by the new name of the place. They are obviously in a transitional phase from the old Pizza Ria to the new Paulys. I can say I wasn't a huge fan of the old Pizza Ria. The people when you called were always rude and quick to put you on hold or even hang up on you. I was very pleasantly surprised to have the owner answer when I called this time. He was very helpful and told me about some of the menu changes. I was happy they had some of my old favs, and some new very good items as well.

Hopefully they will keep it up and this place will continue to get better!!!

This place isn't very good.  It also has no fewer than 3 different signs outside, displaying the chaotic history of this small pizza place. No joke: there's an old Got Pizza sign on the side of the building, the awning says "Pizza-Ria" and the new sign says "Pauly's Pizzeria".

    Back story:

It originally was called "Got Pizza", and advertised itself as New York style. I never ate here, but my girlfriend said it wasn't that good and was extremely overpriced.

It changed names to Pizza-Ria, apparently becoming part of that chain about 1.5 years ago. As Pizza-Ria, it was VERY good and my girlfriend and I were frequent patrons.

Fast forward to Summer 2008. We're not sure about this because we've heard different stories depending on who we ask, but apparently the owner was dissatisfied with the Pizza-Ria franchise, so decided to change names again: to Pauly's Pizzeria.

Unfortunately, the quality of the toppings has declined, the pizza I got wasn't nearly as good as it was when the place was Pizza-Ria, and the prices have gone up besides.

Fortunately, Lou Malnatis is opening up down the street in a month or so.
