POV has, without a doubt, the best view in all of DC. It's an awesome place to meet up for happy hour, if a little pricey. If going with a large group, I would suggest reserving a table, because space does become a bit of an issue when it gets crowded. Lots of elbow bumping and "fullback plays" (using the person in front of you as a shield to navigate through a crowd). The difference between a 3 and 4 star rating for me was price and quality of the drinks. Depending on the bartender you get, it's possible that your cocktails will be severely over-poured and taste less than stellar - at nearly 15 bucks a pop, it's an expensive lesson to learn. But, as I'm sure many have mentioned, the view is worth the trip, even if you only plan on staying for a drink or two.
Review Source:I came here with my girls for brunch last Sunday. I had the French toast and bacon. Eh. It wasn't very flavorful and it was on thick multigrain bread which didn't work for me taste wise. They had chicken and waffles. I heard the chicken was flavorless and you only get a thin quarter of a waffle. Like literally I couldn't even see the waffle under the chicken. To make matters worse a pitcher of a drink, we had the bellini, was $65! way too much. Needless to say, you are paying for the fabulous view here, not the food or drink.
Review Source:The view is amazing obviously- that's the main reason everyone comes, right? (really worth 2 stars alone)
I came here for lunch with coworkers. The place has a totally different feeling during the day which was a welcome surprised. I saw families having lunch with their kids and such. The lunch was REALLY good. I got the chicken sandwich with avocado and calamari for appetizer. Both were really good.
What wasn't good however was the service. It was super slow and non-attentive. One lady even spilled water on my coworker because they were too lazy to hold the glass when refilling the glass with a full pitcher of water.
I won't be rushing back anytime soon but the view and the food are nice for the record.
It is here where I discovered rooftop bars.
The atmosphere, if expensive, is perfect. Where else can you get possibly the best view in DC while enjoying a drink? You are down the street from the White House, so you get a lot of upscale clients here. They also have a separate dance club, if that tickles your fancy.
Drinks are ridiculous. Yes, they are tasty, but if you don't mind spending $15 for a cocktail, I'd highly recommend their drinks. Even their beer is expensive (which explains why I was sober leaving this bar).
There is a line for the elevator that takes forever. There is also no cover charge. It is not uncommon to find 20-somethings drinking with 40 year old hedge fund managers. It is also not uncommon to find bands performing in the W's hotel lobby as you are waiting to go to POV.
If prices were more reasonable, I might be able to give this place a better review.
This place is located at the rooftop of the W Hotel. It is a great place to see a beautiful view of DC and the White House.
I give this place three stars because of the view and the drinks are good, but pricey ($15).
The review is for brunch which I would give two stars. I ordered the chicken and waffle. What a joke. The only option is dark meat and you get a 1/4 of a waffle. Who does that? The cost of rooms there are so high and I can't even get a whole waffle!!! They do bring you a personal small bottle of syrup, which is not necessary. What do they do with those after the meal anyway?
And the pitchers of mimosas, bellinis are $65!!!! Not cool. A plain cup of coffee is $5. Save your money. My friends and I decided we should buy Popeyes, make some waffles and have a bottomless champagne brunch at our house.
Go for the view, have a glass of water or cocktail and get food/drinks somewhere else.
A Chicago friend was in DC on business, so I went into the District to meet her for drinks. I suggested the Rooftop Bar at the W Hotel because of the amazing views of the White House and Treasury. When we arrived, the empty tables all had "Reserved" signs on them, and there were no empty seating groups. We asked a couple sitting on one of the large sectionals if we could join them and they said "Sure." Several minutes later, a waitress came by and asked the couple if they needed another round (both had full drinks), then turned and walked away - yeah, totally ignoring the two thirsty, drinkless people sitting there. I called after her, and she came back and said "I'm only allowed to have one check per table, and they already have an open tab." Okay, a) I'm calling BS on that one - the sectional seats about 12 people; are you seriously going to turn people away because the party of two sitting there has an open tab? and b) you think it might have been nice to tell us that before turning on your heel and walking away? I went to the bar for drinks, and after standing in a crowd three deep, all of whom were being ignored, I suggested to my Chicago friend that we find someplace else. Happily, we found Ceiba (see other review.)
The W is a lovely property and the front desk staff is great; I don't know if POV has separate management, but it's a far cry from the "Whatever-Whenever" Service promised by Starwood Hotels.
Defintely reccomend this place. However, I was there on a holiday weekend which apparently was a little bit different of atmosphere and hours, at least from what I was told. Went on Labor day weekend, this past sunday. I was told they would be open till 12, but then they said they may stay open later due to the holiday.
Well. First of all the place is awesome. beauitful, beautiful views. you can see the monument, and it is rIGHT next to the white house. Absolutely spectaular. It was a little bleh weather wise..a little humid which started some lightening, which actually added to the atmosphere. Pretty.
The tables are all reserved, and when we arrived my friends were first. they sat at a table, and were told that they had to order drinks at the bar. at the bar they asked how to get a table. They said ask the hostess. Hostess was super nice, said no problem, give me five minutes, and gave us am amzing table right in the middle with the best views. No pretention, no nastiness.....server seemed a bit cranky but by end of the night was delightful. We actually closed our tab after about two hours....and the music just got so fun we opened another. At 1:00 place was still hopping....dont know what time they finally closed, I had to leave around 1:30. There was a wedding the had clearly happened and the bride and her party were up there.
Music was amazing. a mix fo now and 80's and oldies, and just great stuff to dance and Jam to. loved it. Sang along to everything. I love how everone says their drinks are SUPER pricey. I dont know. I am from Manhattan. the prices didnt faze me at ALL. I didnt think they were unusally high at all. Their Sangria was excellent, and the cocktail list looked really good.
Anyway, crowd was fun. to me it didnt seem like a lot fo pretention, which I absolutely HATE, so this was a winner for me. SOme girls were all dressed to the nines, in heels and little dressed, and there were some in jean shorts and tanks. I dont know if they require a major dress code, but liked that it was all across the board.
Id definitely come back to this place if I am ever in DC again.
Hands down the best rooftop in DC. Â Who doesn't love getting drinks overlooking the Treasury and White House, with the Jefferson, Washington, and Lincoln memorials visible in the distance. Â The POV Roof Terrace and Lounge remind me just how incredible it is to live in the Nation's capital (the first two times I went I even saw some political heavyweights). Â It also reminds me how expensive it is to live in the Capital. Â Drinks are delicious but pricey ($15).
This place is a great spot for a date or out of town guests.
Good appetizers and phenomenal drinks. Had the blackened shrimp w/ pineapple and it was good for 2 to snack on. Yes, the drinks are pricier ($13-15), but what did you expect for the "best view of Washington D.C."? They get 5 stars for the drinks because they could have given me some crap mixed drink and charged me for it. Instead, I had the best drink of the summer here--the berry caipirinha. I love that the drink is muddled with raspberry (w/o the seeds) and I still taste the citrus notes of the caipirinha shine through. Very refreshing! The D.C. something was also delicious--reminded me of a rich pina colada.
Environment is obviously very nice. The outside is laid out with low, comfy couches good for larger parties and various tables here and there for 1 or 2. The view is beautiful at sunset and extraordinarily relaxing with a breeze. If you're not for the outside, they have an indoor lounge too with floor to ceiling windows.
Our server was very nice. Great people watching spot. I saw a woman wearing a trash bag sweatshirt thing. I swear. She was taking everyone's chairs.
Minus one star for the length of time it takes to get in and out due to the very busy elevators (they need a separate one for the lounge).
Came here last night for an old co-workers going away party. When I arrived they told me the roof was too crowded so we stayed down in the main lounge. The space was pretty big and had lovely tall ceilings. The decor was a bit hit and miss... velvet chairs and chandeliers along with patent red plastic looking couches. The drinks were ridiculously expensive, but they were good. I had two of the elderflower daiquiris. Really sweet and strong, but not a lot of liquid for $15 a pop. Co-workers ordered french fries that were eaten in a flash (and one of the tiny glass Heinz bottles may have been taken as a souvenir...)
I would have liked to see the rooftop, but that will have to wait for another time. And another payday.
I decided to take my girlfriend out for a memorable birthday celebration and from the initial reviews i was a little concerned, but figured for the view it would still be worth it.
First things first, if your looking for a cheap place to drink this isn't your venue, Â the location is in the center of town across from the treasury building with views of the white house, national monument and everything else in DC.
That said we had a fantastic time, the staff was very nice and even accommodated us with a desert after a severe storm blew through and interrupted our dinner for about 30 minutes. Â All-in-all we had a blast, and i would highly recommend this place for a nice evening out. Â Between the views and staff I haven't found any other place like this to enjoy everything that DC has to offer.
This would also be perfect place to take visiting friends and family, but again keep in mind you will spend a decent amount, but its totally worth it for the view.
The view, excellent. Â The food, good but they need more variety. Â I went with a friend and he had reserved our table. Â The atmosphere was pleasant. Our waiter was polite. Â There were all types of people there, families, couples, buddies, etc. Â Really nice. Would advise others to check it out.
Review Source:Okay, okay... it is very pricey but you really can't beat the view! I don't love going here to go out on just a regular night in DC (the crowd always seems a bit off), but I love bringing out of towners to just relax for an afternoon or evening drink! The view totally blows them away and it's just SO DC - with a view of the monument and the White House. I love W Hotels, and this one definitely fits the bill. I especially love when they're playing Marie Antoinette when you first walk in. Taking the elevator up is always fun and it's just a posh modern space. I wouldn't sit here to have dinner (although I have before), but it's totally worth it to come up for a snack and a drink!
Review Source:I've been here a few times, for a late lunch, dinners or for drinks in the evening. Each time I've gone its been with a friend from out of town and between the food and the view, you just can't beat it. I was just there again this past Saturday and enjoyed a nice meal with a glass of wine. The absolute perfect ending to a wonderful day of sight seeing.
The only reason for the 4 star rating instead of 5 is because its a tad bit on the pretentious side (ie. servers that are too cool to smile, reserved signs on every table even though the tables weren't actually reserved). I see enough of that when I'm in LA and prefer not to see it... ever.
Horrible customer service from the lobby to the bar. Â Even on a not-so-busy Tuesday night.
$6 soda. Â Enough said? Â Ok, $18 rail liquor. I seriously thought the $6 soda was just to spite me. Â Pay cash - don't run a tab, you have no idea what will be on it.
You only go here for the view. Â Then leave. Â It's not that special, and neither is the people watching.
The POV Roof Terrace and Lounge is a classy and modern establishment located at the W Hotel. Â We stumbled upon here for their late night lounge hours on Friday evening. Â ID checks in the lobby were swift and we were led to the elevators.
The roof terrace has a lovely view of the city, including a prime view of the Washington monument. Â There's plenty of seating all around with a quick and attentive bar staff. Â On the other hand, the lounge was practically empty and there wasn't any non-table service seating. Â Music was a mix of old school hip-hop (Notorious BIG, Tupac, etc.) and EDM. Â
Drinks were priced on the higher end but overall, they're pretty reasonable. Â I definitely would come back to try more cocktails and when I feel like having a low-key night out in DC.
The view is very nice, but the drinks are way over priced- for $15 I expect to be served a really spectacular cocktail. However, the first time I visited this place I liked it and if you have a friend or relative in town it's a cool place to take them because they will enjoy the view.
I highly recommend making a reservation!
POV on the rooftop of the W hotel is a fun lounge with fabulous views of DC. It's situated right next to the Treasury with the White House behind it. Â The views are stunning and a great place for out of towners-makes for great photo ops, the late night DJ and music adds to the atmosphere.
+ Easy location, a short walk from the metro,a table reservation is free (although you need to reserve weeks in advance),
excellent !
- Overpriced. Bottle service for Belvedere was 300$ and after the server set everything down, that was about all we saw of her. We even asked for water for the table and the server said she would try and make it work. I was thinking.. "we just spent over 400$ and it's that much trouble to ask you for some water?". Â We also ordered a pitcher of the strawberry lemonade at $65.00, plus the 70$ gratuity charge that was added.
- Even if you reserve a table, everybody and their mother are clamoring for the balcony for pictures and crowding you out so it would be better if you could get the lounge sofas on the opposite side of the crowded balcony.
-We were there for a birthday party and the hostess told us if we ate the cupcakes we had brought, the service charge would be $100. I was appalled. I just spent over 400$ and I can't eat a stinking cupcake at a birthday party ?
-It gets super busy so if you don't reserve a table, good luck. You'll be standing the whole time.
- A major negatory was the men's bathroom.. there was pee everywhere. All over the floor ! How the heck does that happen?
- The kitchen closes at 9 or 10pm so make sure if you want food, to order that early.
So overall, the lack of customer service the minute the bottles and drinks were placed on the table really ruined the vibe. Since this place is overpriced, Â I'd rather spend my bottle service dollars elsewhere in DC where the server doesn't give you grief for requesting water. It's still a great lounge, I suggest you save your money- don't get bottle service and expect "service". Just get a drink or two, take your photos and go to another lounge or club to really dance and enjoy the music. To be honest, the lobby of the W hotel looked more fun then the POV lounge. Also worth a mention, the crowd shifts from tourists and hotel guests to a more "late night", no cover-kind of crowd when the DJ started around 10:30pm.
I expected to pay too much for a cocktail.
I knew we weren't going to get seats.
I just wanted a drink outside with a view.
It was a good drink, it was a lovely day, and it was a view you couldn't get anywhere else.
A lot more sunburnt sports tourists than expected, given the shi shi reputation. It was before dinner, and more dressed to impressed were arriving as we left. Not in a hurry to go back, now that I've been there.
5-star view, but that's about it.
We went there on a very quiet Monday night after work, and there were no available tables (no problem) so we stood at the bar. There are no bar stools, which I found odd and uncomfortable. The bartender was uninterested in serving us, and gave a horrible description of the selections. I promise you: he wasn't busy with other customers as it was very quiet when we were there.
Overpriced & pretentious, it's somewhere to go for one drink, enjoy the rooftop view of the White House, then find somewhere else that actually wants your business.
Amazing view and a must-stop for anyone visiting town. We got there around 6:30pm on July 3rd thinking it might be packed because of the holiday. I definitely recommend calling in a reservation even if you're just getting drinks. If you don't have a reso for a table or lounge seat your kind of SOL for seating. That's the only thing holding it back from a 5-star in my book. Great cocktails and solid beer selection.
We also had the Cheddar-Jalapeno Fritters as an app before our dinner elsewhere. Pretty phenomenal.
Fun-but-douchey place for DC area yuppies, affluent young tourists and people on expense accounts. I am typically the latter, and if you can snag a table the view of the White House, various high powered gov. office buildings, the Ellipse and a sprawling view of DC park and monument space are unmatched.
Pricey (a double will run you a dub) and always full on a nice day or evening. This will leave you sort of awkwardly milling about getting into seated people's ways, but c'est la vi. If you have a table (they can be reserved) you are money and can accurately impress/woo/rage with your selected company.
Lots of croakies, pastels and loosened bowties but not a lot of socks. I can sort of dig it.
Food: Â was solid. Â We particularly enjoyed the calamari, shrimp, steamed chicken buns, and rhubarb sorbet. Â Presentation is simple, and the sauces are nice and properly flavored. Â Portions are average for a tapas-style place.
Service: Â was very friendly from the hostess to the server. Â They could have checked in on us a little more often, but overall it was fine. Â There was also a bit of a lag between our first and second order.
Ambiance: Â is their strength. Â The city views are very nice and stretch from the Jefferson Memorial and Washington Monument to the White House and beyond. Â It's a very open design with fans and heaters to help when the weather is not ideal.
Value: Â we spent around $100 for 3 people sharing 1 appetizer and 5 dishes plus 1 dessert and 2 drinks. Â It's not bad for the quality of food and good view.
I've been here twice, both times in early summer. Â You have one of the best, if not, the best view of the city. Â The drinks might be pricey, but it's the rooftop view that you're paying for. Â It's the view of the White House and looking at the snipers keeping the most guarded building in the world on guard. Â It's the Washington Monument, still smarting (but still standing) even after that airplane fighter jet ran into it when Aaron Eckhart was held hostage and Morgan Freeman had to serve as acting president for awhile...but it's being rebuilt!
I also am certain you need to have reservations to sit on the couches. Â The first time I came here, it was after a wedding reception and just an overall party. Â The last time I came here, it was just with some friends. Â My friend was making out with his girlfriend and my other friend and I just walked around and checked out the other bars, whose decor is very nice. Â I walked out of the POV rooftop terrace and heard some women remark, "He's so CUTE!" Â I was thinking, "They're not talking about me." Â But when I walked back in and told my friends about it, they confirmed that they were.
They kept making me uncomfortable in the workplace. Â I feel like I should have been paid.
Amazing view. Great music. Well-dressed and attractive people, The expensive drinks comes with the territory.
I also have to give them a shout-out for their service. I came from work and left a backpack with 2 computers, an e-reader, and expensive sunglasses in it. The staff secured it and when I went to pick it up in the morning they made sure I was the right person and that nothing was missing.
Time of Review:
*May 7 @ 10:30pm, post dinner drinks
The best part of DC is the amazing evening views, and I have to give it to POV for having possibly one of the best views of the mall all the way from the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial! Â Oh did I mention that the White House appears to be a stone's throw away as well?
If you don't mind the crazy expensive drinks that come with the territory ($35 for 2 mixed drinks?!!), this is a great place to people watch as I saw everyone from young professionals to 80+ year olds. Â It's definitely worth a visit, and probably before 11:00 - we waited about 15 minutes for the elevator, and am sure it was much longer later in the night.
We went there for a late night drink on Thursday night. The view is amazing and the ambiance is fine. It was not too crowded on Thursday night so we had good experience. The music was fine and not too loud so we could talk and hear each other without screaming :)
I dont recommend it for anything else that just a late night drink/hang out/dance.
I enjoy it here. I've been 3 times and had a ball each time.
The first time was the best! I went for a birthday celebration and we had a blast! The rather expensive drinks ($15+) were flowing all night, thanks to a generous benefactor. The music was good and the crowd was great! The fire alarm went off about 15 minutes before closing, which meant we had to climb down 80,000 flights of stairs. We were in such a great mood, we just chalked that up to a cool detail to add to the story of an awesome night.
The drinks are pricey, but potent and the vibe was great. 3 solid stars and I can't wait to return this summer!
So want to go out with your friends? They want to be in some hip / swanky / world-renowned bar; POV at the W is the spot to fulfill their needs.
There is first a line to get into the lobby, which takes somewhere between 20 - 30 or so minutes to get into just the lobby. There is away to get passed that though, bottle service or table reservations, and if you're stay at the W it's instant access. Â
Once in the lobby for us commoners, you will wait again in another line to get to the elevator. There is a waitress, and you can get drinks and take them any where but outside, it might just be easier to wait until you're upstairs. Â
Once your upstairs you're in the POV, it's rather anticlimactic. The view is excellent and nothing less than spectacular; however, once the novelty surpasses its posh pretentiousness begins creeping into your senses and you notice it's sort of a trendy but still boring average bar with a view. The above window heat lamps are sort of tacky, it's like they're offering a outdoor experience, but fails heavily when they still cover up the terrace with dirty plastic covers. And the dance floor is about the only redeeming quality at POV.
Drink selection is extensive, my Manhattan was very good, and the beer selection was pleasantly filled with microbreweries and premium spirits. However the $15+ price tag left me feeling a little disappointed and wanting more from my visit. Â Bartenders are friendly, and accommodating.
The Dj was fine, excellent mixes and pretty entertaining. As for the crammed dance floor it's avoidable, with a bunch of dudes lurking around  being envious of the VIP section it's certainly not where I'd come to dance. Â
Leaving is nearly impossible when they close and again you'll look forward to sitting in another long line of people trying to get on 1 elevator to be escorted downstairs. There are no stairways open, and is just awful.
My lasting impressions is totally avoidable and for a pretentious experience such as this it's completely passable. 2-stars.
Went here on Saturday night.
Before the nightclub open at 11pm, it was a line at the lobby from the elevator all the way out to the hotel front door, it was crazy...
I don't know why, or maybe is winter time, but the line moved very fast, they told me they only allow 2 elevators to go up to the rooftop, that's why it was taken longer in line.
The view is really nice, even though is no New York skyline. lol
But still, is over see part of DC, the white house etc
They played good music, the drink are good too, can't share with you if is expensive or not, cuz I didn't pay for any of them. lol
But if you are in DC, do stop by and check it out
BRUNCH: WHAT A JOKE. My friend had to go through more red tape than necessary to buy a house to get a reservation for our party of 8, then when we arrived and announced our party to the hostess they had no recollection of our party's reservation. The service was slow.... 30 minutes to get our first "round" of bottomless cocktails/pitcher but "first hour is free" with brunch? How many times did they feel it necessary to repeat that brunch is a pre-fixed $45 menu?
...Yes, we know. We had to pre-order our entrees to secure our table... which you lost.
JOKE.
Hotel Washington -- Please bring back the cheesy atmosphere and cheesy cocktails for a nice afternoon or evening on the patio overlooking the WH.
We were staying at the W so we figured why not check out POV. We got there at 9P on a Saturday night and it was empty. I know, I know. It's still early. ;-)
The bartenders pour a mean cocktail, but overall the clientele wasn't for me. It was definitely a crowd of young 20 something's looking to mingle. My husband and I left after about 30 minutes and went back to the Living Room Bar.
For me, it was 3 stars, but I think this type of bar is no longer up my alley. When did I become this person?!?!?!
The views are outstanding and the drinks are great, so head on up!
It's all about the view. A magnificent one that makes you fall in love with DC even more.
The bartender whipped up some fantastic cocktails (unsurprisingly expensive - try the mint julep) and we soaked in the general glamour of this gorgeous rooftop bar. It's swanky, maybe a bit pretentious, and has a generally well dressed crowd, although you might spot the occasional shiny muscle-t bound chap who probably feels out of place anyway.
I'm not a fan of The W Hotels and usually stay away, but if the weather's great and you want to impress your date, showcase DC to friends who are visiting from out of town, or go someplace fancy for absolutely no reason - POV could be your best bet.
Geez...the three of us had a drink each (2 bloody Mary's and 1 mimosa) and with tip it was $60. Â Way too expensive and that wasn't even top shelf.
Yes the view on the rooftop is great, but that's about it. Even for being a W hotel, the ambiance was lacking.
It was not busy at all-maybe because their prices are sky high, even for DC!
Short version: over-exaggerated, over-priced, staffed with condescending waitresses. Â THE MOST EXPENSIVE FREAKING COFFEE IN THE WORLD!!
Details: My hubby wanted to end our fun day and eve in DC with drinks at POV, to enjoy the views and relax on the comfortable divans of the hip roof-top bar at the W Hotel. We came up about 9 pm, planning on one quick drink. The host made a big production over "expecting a big party" and not having any open seats at the covered roof-top bar, when we could clearly see there were available seats. After reiterating we only planned on one drink, he ever so "graciously" led us to a table.
We took in the evening city view - quite "fuzzy" thanks to the plastic walls, moving wildly due to strong winds - saw the White House, waited for a waitress to stop by.... And waited.... And waited.... Â I told my husband I was ready to go, I was tired from walking around all day, and didn't feel like playing the waiting / political games. Â He looked A bit wounded, so I stopped a waitress, who was literally walking past us looking into the ground, and asked her to have OUR waitress come by. Â We ordered two Bailey coffees. Â They arrived about 5 minutes later..... Lukewarm. Seriously? I had no patience for this ridiculous pretense, just drank it up in 5 minutes, and asked for a check. Take a guess at the total.... Â Nope.... Â Nope again... Ready?? Â THIRTY FREAKING BUCKS FOR TWO CUPS OF LUKEWARM BAILEY COFFEES.
Oh, puh-leez. I can live without this charade. Been there, done that. Have better places where to spend my hard-earned money.
