I don't like fruit desserts but Recess served me one. More specifically, the BEST fruit dessert of ALL TIME. Rich and salty pistachio streusel, creamy and tangy cream cheese custard, slightly sweet warm apple-pear compote ... top 5 dessert of my life (and it's probably the only non-chocolate entry in the top 20). Â They even put a candle in it (somehow?) for my birthday, whatta nice touch.
During this visit, they also served me one of the best slabs 'o meat I've ever had - venison steak with cornmeal grits, abalone mushrooms, charred tomato demi. Â I truly couldn't stop smiling and shaking my head while eating it. Â It was "please punch me in the face so I know this is real" good.
What else can I say? Â It has been about a year since my last visit, but Recess hasn't changed a bit. Still amazing me with every bite, an unbelievable experience for any food lover.
This is the fourth time I've eaten at Recess so far. Once again pretty much everything was excellent. The food expertly prepared, delivered in a touch of fine dining meets casual environment. The wine pairings were excellent and all in all for what you get everything is quite affordable. These meals remind me of experiences I've had in much larger cities at much pricier restaurants.
Since the menu changes every night, you simply need to check to see if you're interested, but I've just made reservations and shown up and never been disappointed.
Recess is one of the highlights of the Indianapolis dining scene. Â The fixed price (~$60) tasting menu is fresh, innovative, and always changing. Â The ambiance is casual enough feel relaxed, but classy enough to put on your suit jacket for a nice date.
The dishes were mostly hits. Â Their scallops were the best I've ever tasted. Â The steak was cooked, seasoned, and presented perfectly. Â The dessert was absolutely amazing, hands down the best "donuts" I've ever had. Â Unfortunately, the "taco salad" style first dish was a disappointment, there was really nothing new or exciting about it and the flavors were bland. Â For the price point, I thought this could be a lot better.
Service was timely and friendly. Â My only gripe here was that nobody ever described the dishes when they came out. Â Comparable fine dining restaurants in Chicago and beyond almost always go into great detail describing the dish as they serve them. Â Once they take that menu away I have no idea what I just ordered, plus it always seems to taste better after someone just described every tiny piece of food on my plate in excruciating detail using words I mostly don't know.
There is no draft beer but the bottle list is excellent and pulls mostly from local or regional craft breweries. Â I didn't get any wine pairings but will try them next time around.
While I've probably focused more on the negatives, in general this was a great dining experience. Â I highly recommend Recess for a nice night out with the significant other or friends!
Recess is truly exceptional. Â It's an experience- so make sure to set aside enough time to enjoy properly. Â Definitely make reservations and call ahead if you have any special menu requirements. Â I'm a vegetarian and they have always adjusted for me in a delicious way. Â If you decide to do the pairing, it is a LOT of wine, so be ready for it. Â Great vibe and super cool place. Â Parking can be a bit of a challenge and you may want to check with the staff your first time visiting as some of the nearby lots will tow you away, which is a rotten way to end a yummy evening. Â This is definitely one of the top restaurants in Indy and where we take our visiting friends used to the culinary delights of NYC, LA, Chicago, etc.....
Review Source:I've been putting off writing a review because I've been searching for a way for my meager prose to fully describe the soaring mouth symphony that is Recess. I'm still not quite there but I've been there three times now so I'm pretty much obligated to write a review.
The thing that I love most about Recess is that there's always something new and different. That something may be familiar or it may be something that you may have turned your nose up at during any other eating occasion, but rest assured that it will be delicious.
From the fresh, crisp starter salads to the entree sitting in sauce so good you want to drool all over it so that there will be more to lick off the plate to the nutella (!?!?!!!!!) sour cream frosting on your dessert, you will be entranced.
Do not go here on a date, unless you want to always be aware of the fact that you can never satisfy him/her like this food can. You will know because there will be no conversation, just rapturous moans.
The chairs are hard and it can get chilly, so bring some padding or a coat, but not even that can make me knock off a star. MMMMMM.
One of the top 10 meals of my life. If you need more detail than that, here are some specifics: Â
Our menu consisted of:
Beet Gazpacho with shrimp, pickled kale, white hominy puree  (By the way, the shrimp was magical. Forget the large shrimp that a certain restaurant smothers in cocktail sauce to hide the fact that they are otherwise bland and tasteless.  These tasted like a shrimp should.)
Paired with 10 Chateau de Trinquevedel, Tavel, France
Scallop Carbonara with house-made fettuccine, peas, smoked quail egg
Paired with 09 Joseph Drouhin Meursault, Bourgogne, France
(supplemental course)
Seared Foie Gras with miso, mushroom and scallion
Paired with Green Eyes Gruner Veltliner, Austria
Gunthorp Farms Pork Loin with blue cheese grits, red wine gremolata sauce
Paired with 07 Castro Ventosa el Castro de Valtuille Mencia Joven, Bierzo Spain
Buttermilk Panna Cotta with graham cracker crumbs, pineapple and pistachio
(Ordered a Sauternes; supplemental charge)
Food was amazing. Service is stellar. The wine pairings were some of the best I've ever experienced.
My only dislike about the evening was the atmosphere.... to be honest, it's a little cold. I know they're going for the playful vibe (hence Recess as the name) but honestly, it's just not all that warm and inviting. Â Won't stop me from returning though!
One of the best and most satisfying meals I have had in a long time and quite possibly the best one I have had in Indy.  There is no food choice to be made as the 4 courses are set, daily.  We had the choice to add a fifth course (thin sliced sashimi with seaweed salad). The beef seems to be a standard item and ours was delicious. The sweet corn pudding with  blueberries and nuts was hard to imagine, but was excellent. The food is creative and yet unpretentious.  If you like big plates with big portions and lots of sides, this place is not for you. If you are a really picky eater, this may not be the place for you either.  But for everyone else, it will be a great experience.
Review Source:Like most Yelpers and human beings with a mouth that chews, I believe Recess did a remarkable job of satiating my hunger for a well prepared and flavorful meal. Our dishes included a light and tangy caesar salad featuring some freakin' awesome heirloom tomatoes, an umami-rich bluenoss bass in a truffle dashi broth, a perfectly cooked beef tenderloin with crispy pancetta and yellow potatoes, and a German Chocolate Cake that was the best I've ever had.
It's safe to say that I had a damn good meal. I could describe each dish in more detail, tell you about the minimalist decor and solid service... but I'd rather write about what happened after my meal.
Basically the freshness of my meal @ Recess Blew. My. Mind. and truly hit home the fact that I've been overly cost concerned (obsessed?) at the grocery store. In pursuit of a low grocery bill I have been forgetting other important factors.
Since eating at Recess a couple of weeks ago I've been spending more time and money investigating where my food comes from. I've been buying organic potatoes and tomatoes, in pursuit of more flavorful and purposeful meals at home. Â I've been thinking about what type of farm the chicken I wanted to stew was raised on. Local? Free-range? Commercial?
Instead of trying to get the best deal at the cheapest grocery store in town (which usually means most of my produce MUST be eaten in like 2 days or else it spoils), I've been thinking about which herb is the freshest...if buying a ton of cheese is worth the carbon footprint...
I'll always be cost conscious but in part because of my experience at Recess I'm going to think about other factors, too. Dinner at home, seriously, has never tasted better.
I had been looking forward to my dinner here for about two months (we made our reservations really, *really* far in advance), and after hearing the hype and browsing the nightly menu every so often, the day finally came. Â Despite a few minor issues, Recess delivered on every count in spectacular fashion. Â The menu changes every night but I'm going to blabber on about every dish in detail anyways.
First course was a salad with heirloom tomatoes and a lemon vinaigrette. Â I had no idea that just a dang ol' tomato could taste so fine. Â The wine pairing was perfect, the dish was full of sparkling, simple light flavor.
The second course was probably my least favorite of the night. Â It was a sort of soup with striped bass, bok choy, abalone mushrooms, and a dashi broth. Â The flavor was extremely earthy, to the point where I was suddenly reminded of the cattle my grandpa raised - right along with the manure scent. Â The paired wine was a wonderful, lightly floral rose, but it didn't do much to diminish the flavor of the dish.
The main course was simple enough - beef tenderloin with potatoes and bacon, paired with a delicious, almost smokey red wine. Â This was one of the best cuts of meat I've ever eaten. Â The dessert was blueberry cheesecake with a lovely caramel sauce.
Recess gets five stars from me. Â The experience is unpretentious, comfortable, and delicious. Â While the second dish was a bit unbalanced in terms of flavor and the wine pairing option seemed a *bit* expensive, these are minor gripes that are easily forgotten. Â This is a restaurant you should absolutely go to.
Sad when after spending around $200 for a dinner for 2, you cross the street to get an $8 rice bowl from a food truck. Not that the portions are small (I 'd go back to Mesh for their braised pork belly appetizer), just did not find anything special with the 1st three dishes. The lobster salad was ok, the pan fried fluke was ok, but the sliced ribeye on some potato salad with clams just did not worked out for me.
Generally the food is not bad, it was different, but just don't think it was money well spent. Service was excellent though, and the dessert that evening blueberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream topped with bacon bits(anything with bacon is good), was really good. They are supposed to change menu daily (consistency?) so maybe we just went on a not so special day.
I visited this restaurant on a date over the winter. My partner had been once before earlier in the week, and he raved about the place. I was a bit skeptical. The per person price was a bit out of my league, and I probably would never visit on my own. Â Plus, their whole focus is to only offer one menu for the day, which doesn't always leave much option for vegetarians. Thankfully, we had called ahead to see if they could provide a vegetarian option, and they had agreed as long as we made a reservation. Â The food was presented beautifully and everything was very tasty, but I did find the portion sizes to be on the small side - especially for the price. Â I appreciated the unique business approach and interesting experience, but I would probably not return unless persuaded.
Review Source:This place by just be in my top 5 ALL TIME favorite restaurants. Â I have been 3 times and been WOW-ED each time! Â the creativity and freshness of each dish never ceases to amaze me. Â The servers are extremely knowledgeable and friendly, the win pairings are spot on, and the portions are perfect. Â this a a great special occasion place that doesn't require you to get dressed up. Â I have seen everything from cocktail dressed to flannel and bball caps in here which really doesn't bother me at all. Â I really like the modern/retro decor in this place...make a casual yet romantic atmosphere. Â If you want a meal that really knocks your socks off...this is your place! Â Oh, and don't forget to make a reservation...this place books up quickly!
Review Source:It is rare to find a restaurant with a compelling culinary philosophy, an unpretentious atmosphere, and delicious, fascinating food, but Recess delivers on all counts. Â My meal there was one of the most satisfying that I have had in recent memory -- It's an experience that I recommend to anyone in the Indianapolis area. Â As others have mentioned, the menu changes daily, but I can't resist describing my meal in greater detail.
The first course was a salad created using mustard greens from an employee's garden. Â It doesn't get much more local than that. Â Next was halibut served with tomatoes and a spring vegetable risotto. Â The fish was cooked perfectly, and the creamy risotto complemented it nicely.
The third course -- and the highlight of the evening -- was melt-in-your-mouth beef tenderloin served over fingerling potatoes, portobello mushrooms, and spinach in a balsamic vinegar reduction sauce. Â For dessert, we had a choice between green apple and celery sorbet over nuts and caramel, or almond cake with strawberries and whipped cream. Â Each of us chose the sorbet, as it sounded more unique. Â It did not disappoint -- the combination was incredibly refreshing.
The dining area is quite small and filled up quickly, but it never felt too loud or busy. Our waiter, Katie, took good care of us. Â She was laid-back and genuine, but also very knowledgeable and attentive. Â All-in-all, Recess was a little slice of heaven for about two hours -- worth every penny, and incredibly memorable.
It's just as expensive as you might imagine, but you already knew that. Â Yes, it was worth it.
I would tell you what to order and how great it was, but they may never serve what we had again. Â The menu changes with what they are able to source that is fresh and local. Â The servers are top-notch; the atmosphere is modern, trendy, very clean; the food is an adventure and well worth the price. Â Recess offers a great list of wines including Orin Swift, if you're a fan of the Prisoner or Papillion like I am. Â I took my fiancee here for her birthday meal and we spent an hour and a half in foodie heaven. Â I highly recommend Recess for a special occasion or celebration, you will not be disappointed.
Make reservations well in advance.
You know what brought me to Recess? Neil Patrick Harris.
I know it sounds silly, but seeing that both Neil Patrick Harris & Jimmy Fallon claimed it was one of the best meals they've had on Twitter made me think this food was going to be knock it out of the park amazing. I mean these guys live in New York! A foodie mecca! Â So needless to say I had high expectations. Â And I was not let down. Â One of the top 5 best meals of my life easily, maybe even cracked the top 3.
I can be a picky eater when it comes to vegetables and such, but I ate every bite of every course. Everything was just so dang delicious. I even texted my Mom after the first course. "Mom! I ate my whole salad!" This was a momentous occasion.
I read grumblings of portion size on a few reviews here, but I felt they were perfect. I left feeling full, but not so full that I felt I wanted to die. Each course built into the next, and each was one step up from the previous course.
Service was outstanding as well. I would take the last bite of a course and someone would immediately be there to take the dishes out of the way. I dont think my water glass ever got a half inch below the rim. Â
Recess is definitely my new favorite restaurant in Indy and I will be back often.
Recess is easily one of the best restaurants in the city. Excellent food, excellent service, and a warm, friendly atmosphere where people are focused on food and wine and conversation. This is where the foodies come to play.
The menu changes daily, so pick a random day, make a reservation, and prepare to be surprised! Everything we tried was absolutely delicious. Control freaks might have issues with not knowing the menu days in advance, but it works just fine for me! It's expensive, yes, but so worth it!
The food was good. Â The quantity of food was even better, enough to fill you up but not so much that you have to waddle out of the restaurant. Â We opted for the suggested wine pairings... BIG mistake. Â Each wine was decent, but... Â the white wine with the 2nd course was too sweet for the fish it was served with and the red was was super COLD. Â Moral of the story, if you like wine, don't leave it to someone else to choose for you!
Good: Â food, atmosphere, portion size, service, fresh & local ingredients
BAD: Â wine paring, wine temperature, price Â
I have no problem spending money on a great meal. Â And this wasn't the first time we've spent over $100 per person. Â But I really felt it wasn't worth the money. Â I would suggest trying Recess once, but not sure we'll be back anytime soon.
Recess is the best restaurant in the state of Indiana! If you haven't already signed up for the daily menu email than do it now! Even if we have plans for dinner I take the extra 30 seconds to read about the creations that
Chef Hardesty and his crew have put together.
*Make a note, it's not just best in the State for food, the service here is out of this world!!!!!
I wanna love this place, I really do. I have only been one time and it was very good. The food was definitely very delicious and you can really tell how fresh every ingredient was. The problem I have with this place is the portion size. Two of us, we did not do the wine pairings, but I had 2 beers and she had a glass of wine with our meals and our total with tax and tip was nearly $200. Â We both enjoyed everything we ate, but on our ride home, we both looked at each other and said "I am still hungry."
The food is very different and simply amazing, but I dont know, maybe its just me but I would think that after spending $200 on dinner they would have to wheel me out because I was so full.
Maybe we will try this place again when I save up some more money, we will just have to remember to have a snack before we go. Honestly, if you have never been I would definitely try it for yourself, the food is amazing and it is definitely a fun experience.
Recess is one of those places that has been on my list of "must try" for a very long time......and all along, the anticipation, curiosity and excitement has been building. Â They have no menu really, but simply post their daily multi-course dinner on their website each day. Â Everything they list is always so intriguing. Â
Tonight was the night. Â It was Chow Down Midtown, so instead of paying $50, we got to try it for $30 :) Â We couldn't pass it up. Â Two starter options, two entree options, one dessert. Â For $30, it was a steal. Â
First, let me explain the atmosphere. Â Can I just say flipping COOL?? Â Concrete brick exposed walls, awesome lighting, natural lighting coming in from the large front windows, partially open kitchen (so you can see them cooking up your yummies), very clean, very modern and though small, very open. Â Also, sort of an intimate setting. Â This is where you go for a very personal dinner with close friends or maybe even a business dinner. Â NO ONE had their cell phones out. Â Loved that. Â Most everyone had a glass of wine or champagne and they were in great conversation and laughing. Â Fun place.
I got the tomato salad as my starter. Â The tomatoes were some of the most flavorful tomatoes I have ever had. Â The Maytag Blue Cheese was a magnificent touch. Â For my entree, I had the Kodiak Red King Salmon.....YUM!! Â Loved the sugar snap peas on the side. Â Dessert was gorgeous and was a blend of buttermilk panna cotta (delish), strawberry compote (also some of the most flavorful I have ever had), a dollop of whipped cream and a small portion of a cookie (not sure, but it was great). Â The mixed textures and flavors made for a very presentable, but also a very awesome end to our meal.
The service was top notch. Â We didn't feel "bothered", but never needed for anything. Â Nearly 5 star service in my opinion. Â
Our checks came on a Staples clip-board. Â Another unique touch. Â Loved it. Â Goodbye food catching, nasty black plastic check holders. Â Ick. Â
Thank you, Recess for making our night so wonderful. Â I will be back!
Considering all the hype I was a bit disappointed by the service. Â Our server was very sweet but forgot my husband's spoon for his soup. Â This could be just a little thing but for the price $56 per person! we expect nothing but the best. Â
The food was wonderfully fresh - my husbands' spring vegetable soup had just-picked goodness and the mixed greens salad was delicious. However, the chef chose to pair alaskan halibut with a choice of either panko crusted black bass or viking ranch lamb ribeye. Â Two fish courses seem uninspiring and it could be my lackluster taste buds but the two whitefish tasted the same to me.
Also, back in San Francisco when we spend top dollar on a prix fixe meal, every course is superb. Â Here, our dessert the quatro leches, was a bit heavy and my husband thought it was because the dough was not mixed well. Â The accompanying sauces were delicious and the presentation rocked but I wish the dessert was different.
I really wanted to like Recess and I do, but would have liked more conscientious service, tablecloths and every course to be stellar.
We've been here several times now and each time is better than the last. Â The food is phenomenal and I've never had a bad beer or wine here. Â The service is fantastic and you feel pampered from start to finish. Â
I love the fixed menu that allows the chef to play with the food and there's a lot of fun touches to each menu. Â They are completely accommodating with any food allergies or aversions your party might have and they make you feel completely comfortable in a lively, upscale environment.
I recommend subscribing to their daily menu emails, that's how I know when to make a reservation!
Visiting from DC's restaurant scene, and being a journeyman Yelper, I naturally consulted this community's reviews before I chose to dine here last night. Thus I can offer little more than confirmation of what most others have said:
It is a very good restaurant whose strengths lie in superior food preparation and a small, but well-varied, wine list. The interior is purposefully Spartan in that schoolhouse cafeteria way; but the dining experience suffers little from this due to the careful, but not intrusive, service and a relatively quiet atmosphere even when all tables are occupied.
It is certainly not much to look at -- but when your objective is primarily to please the palate, you cannot go wrong booking a table at this establishment.  Thank you for a fine Friday night Recess from the norm!
One of the best dinner spots in Indy. Â Love their event nights! Â The Founders dinner and the Hendry dinner were amazing! Also, I'm happy to see a prix fixe only menu place in Indianapolis. Â Their wine pairings are spot on and also make the dining experience more fun.
Some favorites here have been the caja china pork sandwich and the chicken liver pate.
Love the ambience as well, very modern.. maybe its classroom chic? Â Definitely recommended, especially their event dinners! Â Get reservations for those early because they fill up fast.. (maybe I shouldn't be saying this).
The only aspect where there is room for improvement is their desserts. Â I'm not usually a big dessert person so I don't mind but their desserts (e.g. kit kat) don't seem as inspired as the rest of their menu. Â They're still tasty and there's no problem with execution, they're just not at the same level. Â
Still one of my top two in Indy, thanks for opening a place like this!
Dear great baby Jesus this place was amazing.
I get together with three other friends once a month and we had the brilliant idea to give Recess a try. You should totally do the same thing. Not with my friends - I don't know you - but you get the idea.
The joint just appears on the road. It's not really BY anything (except an amazing tailor). When you walk inside, the exposed walls and 70s office decor creates a very hip atmosphere (but not a hipster atmosphere, which is smell and pretentious.)
Here's how the place works: each night, they have 1 menus (that has one or two choices). You pick which part of the menu you'd like, you sit back and food begins to roll out every 30 minutes or so. You're in for a good 2 hour evening.
And like the video game industry - the food comes when it's ready. Which sounds awful for control freakery. Trust me: it is not. It's awesome.
And...and...and...dessert: schinkey. We all wanted to marry the fried bread pudding balls dipped in butter. Dipped. In. Butter.
They will soon open an adjacent bar, a more casual atmosphere. Just as an FYI.
Recess is ALMOST the best meal I've ever eaten. Almost.
I was surprised when I called 3 days in advance for a reservation and got an 8:30 timeslot. Wow... busy means something.
The menu is perfect for me. I have analysis paralysis when it comes to extensive menus. We made it even easier by just telling our waitress that we wanted whatever wine pairing they recommended.
The night we went there was actually a selection of courses. They had two choices for each I believe. I chose the sea bass for my entree. They had run out of pork loin
The highlight of the meal for me was the second course, which was the Chef's choice. I got to try a bunch of things I've heard about - pork belly, tongue, head cheese. It was awesome. I truly appreciated the adventure.
The bill was spendy, but oh so totally worth it.
I've been back several times now, and all I can say is: GO. Â Don't worry if the menu sounds odd (sign up on their website to receive daily emails with the menu). Â Don't worry if you don't like one of the ingredients. Â If you're ever going to try something new or that you haven't liked before, this is the place to do it. Â Greg and his team serve the most beautiful and perfectly prepared meals I've ever had in Indy. Â
The wine pairings have also been wonderful, very reasonably priced. Â There's also an extensive beer list. Â A lot of thought has been put into these offerings.
The space is small and intimate but not crowded. Â The menu requires almost no choices but should not disappoint even the pickiest eater. The wine list is extensive but affordable. Â The atmosphere is upscale but not at all stuffy. Â Recess is a great choice for a date but also easily accommodated our party of six. Â
I could go on and on about the delicious soup, scallops, steak and bread pudding I devoured; but the menu changes everyday so I won't rub it in too much. Â Â
They typically post the day's menu by early afternoon. Â You may not want to wait until then because they might be booked. Â Roll the dice. Â Make a reservation for next weekend, and go with an open mind.
Lovely from start to finish.
Lovely+funky decor. Â I find a lot of decors in Indy kind of generic, but not here. Â School-themed and slightly edgy but not too.
When we arrived 15 minutes early for our 8:15 reservation, we were greeted warmly and seated at our table which was ready and waiting for us.
Some friends had told us that if you call ahead and tell them you're vegetarian, they will prepare a vegetarian meal for you. Â So that's what we had - the regular night's menu with some tasty butternut squash raviolis swapped in for the entree.
- Green bean / arugala salad
- Zucchini soup with chanterelles
- Butternut squash raviolis
- Apple meringue bar
All local.
A very satisfying 2 1/2 hour meal, a special night with friends.
She'd wear her small black dress out tonight; it was hot and so was she. That thought made her giggle. But here she was: 46 years old and in that dress she looked good; she supposed the yoga must be working. It was Tuesday so that meant dinner at Recess. What else is open in Indianapolis on a Tuesday?
She arrived, her older sister in tow. The strip mall location and the run down college neighborhood reminded her of a tavern she frequented in the late eighties but inside the space was lit up with grey floral chandeliers. The place wasn't wasn't pretty - there was too much concrete and metal to call it that - but lovely, modern, funky. She reminded herself to find out if the chairs in the dining room really were Eames or just knock-offs.
She'd checked on line for the menu that day: gazpacho, trout from Wisconsin and duck. Dessert was peaches with a rich cake but she'd skip that tonight; this dress was a bit tight. The question was whether or not to do the wine pairings. One look from the table of wine distributors dining out together let her know that drinks would be covered tonight - they had more than enough to share, and with some flirting they would.
The gazpacho was a bit crowded with garnish, the trout had too many competing sauces, the duck wasn't fatty but not sauced enough either. These were nits though. Anyone growing their own herbs and vegetables and sourcing from local producers in this town was doing more to represent the spirit of Local than some poseur in California where sourcing is easy. Besides it was still all delicious and the free wine was excellent, even if it meant getting pawed by some married midddle aged man.
So the peaches with financier cake? She'd have that too, the cute couple across the room were enjoying theirs with two different dessert wines and it looked too good to pass on. An extra 30 minutes of yoga would make up for it anyways.
If I could give Recess 6 stars, I would!
It's a very risky concept in a city built upon chain restaurants, and I hope it sticks. You show up, eat, drink and leave happy. There aren't a whole lot of decisions to be made, which gives you ample time to enjoy the company of your dinner companions.
The wine list is small, but very original and they do a great job of selecting wines and/or beers for each course. The food is fresh, local and thoughtfully prepared.
The pricing is straightforward and quite fair: $50 per diner. Add $20 for wine pairings. You can spend twice that at any number of "fine dining" restaurants in Indy (i.e. steakhouses), and you won't get a fraction of the quality for the price.
I wish there were more places like this in Indianapolis! Â It is not just a restaurant, but a dining experience.
The staff is so friendly, the food is great, the service is fantastic. Â It is a small eatery with charm and personality. Â It is not pretentious, which you get a lot with good food. Â You can wear jeans or your prom dress...it does not matter. Â It is one of the few places that actually lets you enjoy eating with out feeling rushed and with out people breathing down your neck to sit at your table. Â You can take your time and enjoy your company.
The menu is set, so you don't get to pick many options. Â If you are a foodie and/or open to try anything, then you must go! Â They will accommodate vegetarians, too.
This is a review for customer service - food will come later.
I called Recess at 4pm on a Friday evening to get a reservation for four later that night. They were booked until 9:30pm, so I took the reservation as I was eager to try the place. The woman I spoke with was polite.
After talking to one of our party, discovered it might not be the best place for us to dine, as the prix fixe menu didn't have any chicken-based or meat-free dishes (each day is something new on their menu, and you don't get a choice. But it all sounds amazingly delicious.)
So I called Recess again, this time got a gentleman on the phone who was indeed gentlemanly and polite. I asked if they could substitute chicken or no meat for the lamb dish, he asked the chef, and said they could accommodate. So I kept the reservation.
Spoke with my friend again, who said in spite of the ability to change the one ingredient, the menu that day wasn't desirable (though it was to me and my wife.) So I called Recess again, spoke with the same woman as the first time, explained the situation, and apologized for having to cancel my reservation just a few hours before we were to dine.
She was unfailingly polite and said they'd look forward to seeing us in the near future. We'll definitely be back - the menu is intriguing, and this first customer experience was smooth & polite - which can make a world of difference (see my review for R Bistro and why I won't return.)
