By far my favorite sushi place!!

This place is simply amazing. There is no corkage fee and a new wine store called 'Paired' just opened up across the street on Buckingham where Kafka used to be.

What keeps me coming back to this place is the excellent food and friendly service. We usually order the 20 piece sashimi platter which features a variety of fresh fish that changes with the daily selection. Everything is very reasonably priced too, especially for how delicious everything is.

When we order rolls we like to get the Spicy Tataki (comes to the table on fire!), the Mafia, or the super white tuna with avocado (we get it wrapped in black rice instead of the traditional white rice). All are amazing!

I also like some of their more adventurous creations- Eric will make a dessert that has diced salmon, white tuna, avocados, tomatoes, and asparagus in a sweet sauce that is surprisingly delicious.

One piece of advice- the place is not huge (maybe seats 50 guests when completely full) so you may want to make reservations ahead of time. Enjoy!!

3.5 stars, but in my experience not worthy of 4. BYOB is a plus, our server was very nice, and the rolls were pretty good. The atmosphere, the prices, and the willingness to accommodate changes to existing menu items brought down my rating.

The atmosphere of the place makes you feel like you're in a strip mall, not like you're somewhere you would pay $13+ for a roll. We went on a Friday night and there were only 2 other tables seated-1 of which sat several college-aged individuals talking very loudly and drinking from the bottle of vodka on their table. Obviously Rollapalooza can't help it when people are rude, but that is the atmosphere they've created.

My fiancé had the Spicy Tataki roll that had an impressive presentation (it came out with the plate flaming) and was pretty good. He had another roll that neither of us remembers, obviously just so-so. I ordered two non-rice menu items-the Martini Q and the Yellowtail Jalapeno. I specifically chose Rollapalooza because I noticed they offered a menu option (the Martini Q) that was a roll wrapped in cucumber. I was trying to avoid rice (eating a Paleo diet) and was hoping they could make other rolls wrapped in cucumber, as I've had other places. They said they couldn't do that and they weren't really able to offer me much information on components of other items I was interested in. They were, however, able to give me the sauces on the side which I appreciated. In short, if you're looking to order straight from the menu you won't have any issues, but they may not be able to accommodate special requests.

They are bit slow, but the rolls are awesome. The Black Monster is amazing! BYOB with no cork fee is a big plus!

Rollapalooza was a perfect date place. Small and cute on the inside. Rolls were tasty but nothing super fancy. Just make sure you get a reservation.

I am so addicted to this place! Its WONDERFUL! Its so fresh, with some citrus juices that makes them even more fresh, light, and beautifully decorated. They all have a perfect combination of flavors! And in carry out and delivery they put it perfectly! Its like eating in the restaurant. Very clean and fusion without the mess of flavors. Just PERRFERCTTTTT!

We accidentally found Rollapalooza while searching for a sushi place near the Theater we were going to. I'm really glad that we made reservations, as soon as we arrived no more than 10 minutes later the entire place was packed! We went on Saturday night though. The place has a great quaint atmosphere, the service was prompt and courteous. I ended up ordering the Koni roll and the Black Monster, THE BEST two rolls I've had in a VERY long time. Everyone liked my two rolls so much that the entire table ordered more! The Black Monster comes with Black rice which is low carb- always a plus. There are 10 pieces so it's tasty and filling.
I will absolutely come here again!!

I've been to Rollapalooza a few times and ordered take out (through http://Grubhub.com) and not yet been disappointed.

The name is misleading. I expected something more like sushi fast food, not a "normal" sushi restaurant. I don't remember what exactly I've ordered or tried, but it's all been good. I didn't notice it in the restaurant, but online you can substitute black rice in the sushi rolls. The black rice adds a nutty flavor that goes well with some of the rolls. Ok, maybe I lied, I remember two things, some kinda of tuna and salmon tartar on crisp somethings, those were really good. The pink lady roll is good too. The rest I can't put my finger on, it all blends together in a whole bunch of "mmmmm"s.

The restaurant is BYOB, which is nice. I do love a good BYOB sushi joint, especially one close to my place. I had no idea I could order delivery on http://grubhub.com, now I'm afraid I won't leave my apartment again till spring.

We had a great time here. The waitress was very nice and helped us order because I don't do sushi often. The place is a little small but it's a nice atmosphere. We were still able to seat 6 of us comfortably. I had the black monster and it was delicious. We all tried each other's dishes and were shocked that every dish was amazing! Definitely coming back again. Oh BYOB was great too and no corking fee!

Consistently good sushi, fun specialty rolls (try the Tequila roll, seriously), fairly easy to get reservations, cute atmosphere, attentive with the byob (they bring you a wine chiller without even having to ask for it). All around great spot.

This is a really great sushi joint, and I'm so glad that I live close to it! My boyfriend and I honestly come here a couple of times a month. It's BYOB, not very expensive, and the fish is always fresh. The decor leaves a little to be desired, and it is a very small place, but don't let that deter you. I have seen a few couples walk into the place and then walk back out when they see the inside. Honestly, I almost did that the first time I went there, but I'm so glad that I didn't! I've enjoyed everything here from the salads, to the sashimi, to the appetizers, to the sushi rolls. They have a wide variety, and I have never tried anything I didn't enjoy. The servers are great, and are always willing to give you suggestions based on what type of fish or taste you prefer. Everyone is so nice and accommodating that it makes you want to come back and give them your business.

BEST SUSHI EVER! Attentive service and great shumai, maki rolls, and miso soup. I ate so much there.

The menu is huge and when we asked our server if he liked a certain roll, he had no problem telling us that it doesn't taste good. I will be returning soon. :)

I don't know what happened to the Rolla I used to know, but it just isn't the same anymore. Their sushi is good but not the greatest, I feel they are missing some secret ingredient or something, that last flavor that makes it perfect.

What do they have? Aesthetics. Not the most creative one but it gives them a good style. They can master your classic sushi rolls, with the tuna and avocado, but their spicy mayo and chef sauce lacks magic. It appears plain.

Their place is quite spacious and the service is good, but their prices don't really compensate for what they have to offer, even on their signature dishes. I do hope they improve. Their dragon roll is superb.

Great sushi at a great price in a relaxed atmosphere. Also the presentation of orange at the end of the meal is the perfect end to a sushi lunch. The black rice was very interesting and added some depth to the rolls. There is an added level of convenience on how fast and easy it is to pop in. BYOB is genius. The owner is nice guy too.

First of all, it is BYOB. My friend and I come here often and really enjoy the atmosphere, sushi and the service. We order the Rollapalooza Blossom, Cucumber Salad, and several other rolls. The Rollapalooza Blossom I definitely recommend, not only is it tasty, it is a low carb sushi roll. This is our all time favorite roll!!!

I would definitely recommend coming here with a group of 2-6 and not anymore. It is a small place but they definitely have great service and never rush. Check this place out.

After shopping all day friday, me and a friend wanted to meet up for sushi. I'm from out of town so I didn't know where the good sushi places are. Our hosts told us most of them are in Boystown. We decided to find a place close to our friend's apartment off the Addison Red Line, and found Rollapalooza on Yelp.

We walked in late friday night about 9:30 or so and we were seated right away. The restaurant was small but cute and cozy. They even had a white chirstmas tree. Points for being festive!

We brought some hard apple cider, and no corkage fee! :D Love it.
I ordered the calamari salad-- which was delicious.
My friend also got the rollapalooza blossom, super yummy as well.

I ended up getting the spicy tataki, which i was so surprised because it came out on a flaming plate :D Super Cool. It was pretty good as well.

Overall I would recommend Rollapalooza for good service and atmosphere.

BYOB without a corkage fee. Reservations available on Open Table, which is fantastic. Location is easy to get to and decor inside is very nice for a BYOB Sushi spot. Location is a tad small, but works especially with a reservation.

Sushi was very very good for the price points. Lots of rolls, inventive menu overall. Food came out vey quick on a Friday, but we were never rushed. Would recommend to any group of 2-6. Much larger and they wouldnt have room.

We were in Chicago this weekend to visit some friends who live in Lakeview right near Boystown. Seeing that we didn't get in on Friday until about 8:30, we wanted something easy, and they recommended Rollapalooza as their local sushi joint.

We walked in around 9:30pm or so, and were seated within a few minutes. The place is very small, but bright, which was very fun for a sushi restaurant. It is BYOB so we went to the nearby 7-11 in advance for some Sapporo & wine. The service was prompt and friendly throughout the entire evening.

Overall, the sushi was average. The size of the rolls for the price is fine - it's by no means cheap but by no means expensive. The quality was good - fresh, flavorful. There was nothing terribly innovative or outstanding - a pretty standard sushi dinner.

I gave Rollapalooza a shot last night and was pleasantly surprised! I didn't get anything fancy - just the Philadelphia Roll (added cucumber) and the Spicy Tuna Roll (added crunchy) and both were great. I opted to pick up my order and it was ready in 10 minutes. Pretty sure I devoured the rolls in half that time. I will definitely order from here again!

Great sushi! Wait staff were very friendly. Try the flaming spicy sushi roll. Very cool looking and delicious. Usually I don't think of dessert in a sushi restaurant but the 2 different bombas were awesome.

It's a fun place... small-ish. I had something with mango and chili sauce, which was very good. The rest of it wouldn't break any molds, but it was enjoyable. There are a couple of other Japanese places on this stretch of Halsted, but I'm glad I went here.

This place never fails to be the best. It is a go-to place for a celebratory dinner or just a nice bit of food. They are incredibly accommodating to my veggie needs and never scoff. They will throw together pretty much anything I request. Try their Rollapalooza mixture. It's amazing. Also, a personal favorite that I made up is mango, jalapeno, avocado, and cream cheese. Mind blowing yumminess.

Yep, I'm a fan. Despite the flippy name. Why? It's a block from my new casa. It's not so jammed full of hot gay dudes that I can't find a seat at the counter on a weekend night. It's BYOB (although don't do what I did and run to 7-11 for a bottle of Menage white). And the sashimi is sooo goooood. I wouldn't take a date or anyone I was trying to impress here (it's no Coast). But it's solidly good and close to home.

Even though the majority of reviews are positive, I thought the sushi was just mediocre. The ginger salad dressing was good, thick like I like it, but none of the rolls are very memorable.

Also, it smelled like a nail salon when we walked in - not a great start. Not too cheap, not too expensive, and the service was fine. It's nice that there's no corkage fee, but I think there are better BYOB sushi places in the city. I'd give it one more try.

It's BYOB, and Binny's is a 5-10 minute walk south on Halsted, so I picked up a bottle on the way. I was a little early, but the servers were very welcoming and were happy to let me sit at a table and wait.

The cucumber salad was a refreshing start to the meal. Don't attempt to figure out how to cut the 20-foot long spiral of cucumber with your chopsticks. Just shove one end in your mouth and chew til you're done (thatswhatshesaid). The shumai, four to an order, were excellent. We tried four rolls from their menu, which was basically so long I zoned out and selected at random when it was my turn. They were all beautifully plated -- I think the dragon was my favorite, flavor-wise.

For dessert, ice-cream filled mochi in strawberry, mango, green tea and red bean flavors were all delicious.

This place was much nicer than I expected. I have no point of reference for sushi restaurants in Lakeview, and there are dozens all within a few blocks of here, but based on appearances and cleanliness alone, I'd come here again before I'd even set foot in some of the others I walked past.

I love this sushi place. Probably the best sushi I've had in the city.

I first went here on a bachelorette party. You walk in and are like, "not the best for a bachelorette party." it's not super fancy, pretty low key. Also, pretty bright. Not really dim like a lot of other sushi places, all done in wood.

However, the sushi is great, and so is everything else we've had. I love the cucumber salad. It's cut into "noodles" instead of just slices. I actually went and bought a spiral slicer just so I could attempt to recreate the salad. Still working on the dressing, which is just delicious simplicity.

The shumai are great, and have lots of shrimp in them. It seems like a small portion, but since you're going to order a billion rolls, you need to save room. Also, you seriously have to check out the white tuna mango tartar. I'll upload a pic so you know what it looks like. It is sooooo good. I could eat it by the bowlful. Tuna, mango, avocado and I think cucumber are layered, topped with a delicious tangy dressing and garnished with roe. Mmmmmm.

The signature rolls are really good. We've been a few time and have by now had probably almost every one. We've been pretty happy with them. When we went last night, we ordered the white castle, the spicy tataki, and the Godzilla. All three were so good, I couldn't pick a favorite. However, the tataki comes out on a burning plate, so points for style! The turtle is also really good, and is shaped like a, you guessed it, turtle. It's head is -made out of wasabi with little octopus suckers as eyes. Cute.

Service is always solid, too, and we've only had to wait once to get a table. One time, we brought a friend from out of town here. I had a bit of a cough. The sushi chef heard me coughing and had the server bring me a cup of hot water to soothe my throat. So nice!

Hits the spot every time. While I only really like sushi in San Francisco for reasons you can probably pinpoint, this place does it right for Chicago.

Highlights:

* Great sashimi
* Excellent rolls
* Superb service
* Inexpensive for the quality of fish
* Great location
* BYOB

Highly recommended for a sushi place. While other sushi places may have a more fun ambiance, I say who cares especially when I go for the quality of sushi rather than ambiance - unless of course it's a special occasion.

Give Rollapalooza a go you won't be disappointed!

I am not a connoisseur of sushi, but I gotta say regardless I really liked it! Granted, it is also a bring your own wine (with no cork fee!), so perhaps the sushi tasted even better a few drinks in! Staff was super friendly, sushi was yummy in my opinion, and it's got a nice decor. Also, a good amount of sushi for the price!
Only downside, which I have heard is common in Chicago, is that wayyyy too many rolls have either cream cheese or mayo in it.. I kinda found that weird and avoided those rolls..

Ever find a one inch-long worm wrapped around an edamame bean? No? Weill I did at this restaurant. Yeckkk!!! Thank god I was feeding my son with them so I actually saw the thing before popping it into my mouth. I suppose there is no way to check for stowaways since the beans are served in-pod but that it definitely a first for me and definitely set me on edge for the rest of the food.

The rolls were tasty but there seemed to be a great deal less fish in there than I am used to. Also, when you order a side of white rice, they just serve sushi rice complete with rice vinegar and sugar. Feeding my baby with that became an adventure with sticky sweet rice getting everywhere. Not my favorite sushi place.

Is it bad when the delivery driver knows you?! I think not!

Had to up the review to 5 stars. My new favorite roll is the tequila roll...perfect amount of spice with the fresh fish.

I'm starting to think the ginger dressing had a little bit of crack in it...a couple days after having it I start dreaming about it!

Placed a large order here through Grub Hub at the end of November and found ourselves gagging on old fish.

We ordered the house salad - this one was really good. We had no idea it would be so big and could be shared - a welcome bonus. Also a bonus that the Sushi and Sashimi combo came with a salad. The dressing was peanut based and better than some of the ginger dressings served at many sushi places.

The miso soup contained very little tofu and wasn't anything special.

The big problem came with the fish we had...

1  Sushi and Sashimi Combination
1  Salmon Avocado Roll
1 Super White Tuna Avocado Roll

I expect fresh fish. It wasn't good. We won't order here again.

Being half Japanese, I expect a lot from sushi places these days. I'm going to give Rollapalooza a 3-star "A-OK" because while I did enjoy my delivery order for the first time, I did feel that there was too much cucumber in my rolls. That's a good indicator of how authentic a sushi place is usually, becuase real sushi should NOT have cucumber in them. Many Americanized sushi restaurants use cucumber and other "bells and whistles" as a filler so as not to go overboard with the rice etc.

Basically there should not have been any cucumber in any of my rolls but there were. Although I will give them credit because my delivery order was timely, the delivery guy was nice and prompt, and at the end of the day my sushi was satisfying without breaking the bank.

I will say the sashimi was very tasty and fresh! Definitely almost made me foeget ab the cucumber haha.

Ordered unagi nigiri, salmon sashimi, spicy tuna roll, and one of their signature specialties the Spicy Tatazaki.

Would give Rollapalooza another go at the actual location next time!

Rollapalooza has a plethora of creative rolls. We ordered several basic rolls and a few unique ones. The bill was normal for sushi places (high), but they did throw in a free Spicy Tuna roll (through Foodler), which made me edit my order to accommodate for the free food.

The rolls were delicious and satisfying. Try the Meguan- the chili paste on top is a different, yet welcoming addition.

The delivery service was speedy and the order was accurate. I would undoubtedly order from here again, especially with the freebie!

Best Sushi in Chicago. It's fresh, delicious, and reasonably priced. It's byob, which is always a plus.

The rollapalooza blossom and acapulco rolls are both great!!

The place is very small, so I recommend making a reservation.
