After visiting LA I have become a self serve yogurt fan, but I was (very sadly) underwhelmed here. Â While they do have many more flavors to choose from than Pinkberry (like cake batter, wild cherry, red velvet) the consistency of the yogurt was really watery and I felt like it was all half melted by the time I brought it to the counter. Â Their topping selection looks large, but also seems fairly limited once you really look at it. Â There are like 8 different kinds of mochi, but they're lacking in the rest of the candy department. Â
As much as I would love to support the local fro yo place, my heart still belongs to Pinkberry!
I eat Fro-yo a lot. This is by far my least favorite spot to get the cold treat in River North/Loop. Been there twice and both times the yogurt came out super watery at first. The texture is off, and I'm not a picky eater. All the other fro-you places are just plain better than this one. The .45/oz pricing is typical, however, I think they weigh the cup (and not subtract the cup weight out). Like I said, I eat a lot of frozen yogurt and try to fill my cup up to about the same place each time. Yet, this place was about $1 more than usual each time I went in. hhmmmm.
Review Source:Self-serve fro-yo shops are popping up lately like nobody's business. Having visited a few now, I have to say there's really not much that differentiates one from another, such as:
*$0.45/oz pricing
*approximately 10 flavors, many the same as other places I've been (tart, vanilla, red velvet, cake batter, etc.) - I many purchase from the same distributor
*brightly colored stores
*toppings that include fruit, candy, syrups, etc.
Despite all of the sameness, there were a few things that stood out  about Royal. First, you can get yogurt smoothies - personally, I'm not a fan, but I think this is a nice option. Second, you can get your yogurt creation in a waffle cup (or at least I assume that's what they're for). Lastly and most puzzling, they have a chocolate fountain purportedly pouring Belgian chocolate. I'm not sure how they use the fountain, it's housed in a plexiglass case and the only access is behind the counter.
Royal is good, no better than their compadres; their biggest issue is their stiff competition around the corner - Pinkberry.
After baking in the sun at the A&W show we needed something too cool off with, and I love a good self-serve yogurt and I got my girlfriend hooked too. Â We walked into what I have now noted as the standard decor of a FroYo establishment; bright, bold colors everywhere and modern tables and chairs. Â
I helped myself to a few samples and quickly discovered this would not be my best FroYo experience to date. Â It was not creamy at all...none of the flavors were. Â It was more of a watery/icy texture. Â When it came out of the machine it was liquid first followed by a semi soft soupier mess. Â I didn't fill my bowl nearly as much as I normally do, and I let the machine pour out the beginnings of the softest yogurt before putting my cup under the stream. Â I'm not paying for a yogurt drink...I'm paying for a frozen treat. Â Fairly standard topping bar. Â My friend seemed to enjoy it, but she's not nearly as cultured in the world of FroYo just yet...the FroYo snob will emerge soon enough.
Meh...it's not for me. Â Plus they don't have public restrooms...so I have to have sticky hands till I get home?
I've been here about 4 times now. Â I think the variety of flavors of fro-yo is great, I'm particular to the Red Velvet or Pistachio. Â Sometimes when I have gone, the fro-yo tastes a bit "watered-down," though there are always a nice choice of toppings that help add more flavor. Â
When I first went they had Rainbow Nerds as s topping choice which was easily my favorite, later visits had them rotating different toppings in and out. Â Nerds was out, though a variety of cookie doughs were in (chocolate chip, brownie, along with a few other unknowns). Â
All in all, i really enjoyed the place. Â I'm more of a load my fro-yo with candy topping versus fruit like some other places have. If you are going to nearby M burger for food, think about trying this place, which is right next door, for dessert.
It's the invasion of self-serve yogurt places. What's this: another self-serve frozen yogurt shop steps of Pinkberry without a line. Hooray for no line.
Same story as the other places: fill your cup with yogurt of choice and add whatever toppings you like. The toppings aren't labeled, but you can ask if there's something that doesn't look familiar. If you want to taste test a flavor, small cups are available at the front. Once you're done, weigh up. It's 45 cents per oz.
I think there's about 10-12 stations, with some flavors switched up daily. They have non-sugar and like one to two non-gluten flavors available. So far, I've had the cake batter and cookies and cream which were both sweet and creamy. The other day I was craving cake batter. Sadly, it was not offered at the time. I heard that if a flavor is popular it tends to run out quickly and may not be available the next day. Hmmm...duly noted. I guess I just have to time it right for my next visit, not that the cookies and cream I ended up getting was bad. It was quite the opposite.
It's in the space once occupied by Cold Stone - between M Burger ( and an alley), and Eggsperience. Outdoor seating is limited and has been occupied the last two times I was there. There's also plenty of seating inside with the AC on full blast. It's definitely a nice way to cool off.
This is a self-serve frozen yogurt shop. Â They only have about 10 flavors and 1/2 of them are tart. Â If I want tart I will go to Pinkberry.
The store is clean and modern.
The yogurt just didn't taste all that good. Â They didn't really have any good flavors and everything tasted tart - I normally love pistachio froyo but it just didn't taste good here. Â I ended up getting vanilla and chocolate - boring.
Plus I think they guy may have overcharged us. Â My friend's yogurt ended up costing about $6.00. Â But then again maybe their prices are just high.
Next time I'll just go to Baskin Robbins.....
