We go to Sazerac when we want to class up our Friday night. Â Best Old Fashioned I've had in town and my wife loves the Thalia, a refreshing and tasty cocktail.
While the rooftop bar doesn't have the views of Sky bar (and who can really compete with that view??), I like it better. Â Easier to get drinks and its more comfortable in my opinion.
The bartenders here really took their time with the drinks, including a few gin fizzes, on a busy Saturday night. Well done! Â Don't get the sazerac though, it will leave you disappointed. I had much more luck with their own creations. It was good - but the prices were really what sold me. :)
Review Source:Sazerac is my favorite place for a drink and snacks. Love taking friends here and go quite often these days. The last time I was in the waitress knew my drink order without asking!
GET THE BUTTERCUP. Seriously, you won't be disappointed. It's sounds a bit eclectic in taste: vanilla vodka, pineapple, rosemary, lemon, cinnamon - but it is amazing. The garnish changes from a lemon zest to rosemary...get the rosemary!
For snacks, I love their kimchee edamame. Super tasty.
The rooftop patio is an awesome place to sit, have a drink and enjoy the view.
Fantastic cocktails and delicious small plates. Â I had the Grassy Knoll, a very bright and complex gin-based drink. Â I'm trying to replicate it at home! Great atmosphere, cozy without being cramped, bartenders were great. Â Went at the end of February, great menu choices (not reflected in their current menu online though) for that time of year. Drinks may be on the sweet side for some people, but they have a good selection of well drinks, and will do the classics.
Review Source:OK, so they have a great venue! Â You can sit outside or in the upstairs bar or hang back in the downstairs bar. They have the most creative drink menu I have seen in NC. Â Great bartenders who lovingly reminisce about the Asheville we used to live in before the late 90's. Â Good music and some very creative food plates on the menu. Â We went back here a second night, in a town with a LOT of great choices!
Review Source:First time in Asheville and my girlfriend and I stopped in for a drink and weren't disappointed! Great drink/cocktail selection (not to mention great tunes)! Had the special xmas cocktail as well as my namesake The Roberto, but the best part was the chocolate covered bacon!!!!! Awesome!
Enjoyed the decor and atmosphere so much that we went back the next nite!!
And I have to say that the bartender Kelly rocks!! Will definitely visit when I visit again!
I see there are many positive reviews on this joint so perhaps they finally hired a few good bartenders. The rooftop bar IS wonderful and they have a great cocktail menu. Unfortunately, none of the bartenders know how to mix any of the drinks on that menu and the service is really slow... probably because the bartenders are all reading off recipe cards. Honestly, it is like watching 15 yr. old try to make a Manhattan.
Review Source:Excellent find. Not typical bar menu, as Chef Alexandria is classically trained - we were fortunate to met her tonight. Great, fun, knowledgeable lady. Try what she suggests, but certainly Try the Scottish eggs -awesome, as is the unusual chocolate covered bacon. Yes, and you have to try it!
Review Source:Great rooftop bar, apparently one of the only ones in Asheville. Good staff, good experience, definitely a place to visit if you're in town.
They make a great Dark-and-Stormy. Giving this five stars for bar and drinks but thought the food was just okay. Had the duck tacos, which were good but I'd rather eat around town and come here after.
We'd been brewery-crawling all afternoon and were in the mood for a cocktail to "cleanse the palate," so we ended up at Sazerac, which ended up being our favorite bar experience during the libation-heavy visit. We got our drinks (and started our tab) downstairs then took them up to the rooftop where we lurked until a table opened up. We didn't have any issues with service, but we were also there pretty early (8/9 PM on a Friday night). We tried the Mosquito, Terpsichore, and Thalia, which were all good, but the Thalia was notably superior (like three more rounds of just-the-Thalia superior). We're still trying to recreate it at home. Also, the rooftop during sunset is great.
Review Source:Love the cocktail menu and some of the unique small plates (the popcorn and the kim chi edamame were awesome)! It's definitely a bar that would be defined by the word "swanky," so it's pricier but fun for a special night out. The insanely slow (and mostly unapologetic) service, however, definitely was a damper and our group would have stayed longer and had more drinks if it hadn't taken so long.
Review Source:While on my first visit in Asheville, I found this place while walking around & checking out window menus. Sazerac caught my eye because I gravitate towards innovative cocktails & they had a entire list full of them. After going back to my hotel & checking out the previous yelp reviews, I was a little wary, especially due to the reviews on the sub-par service. However, the service totally blew the rest of my previous Asheville restaurant experiences out of the water. Our server Kelly was the best! She had a great sense of humor and was always there to take our never-ending orders. Every drink was delicious as well as our tapas (the kimchi edamame is amazing)
Just for reference, I came on a Monday evening & it wasn't the least bit crowded. The restaurant is on the small side, so I could see how it could get busy on a weekend & that could affect service. Don't let that assumption deter you though- the ambiance and the spirits are totally worth any wait.
One of my favorite places for cocktails, which are all delicious. Try them all (maybe not in the same night ;)). I love the bar itself. It's swanky and has a more upscale feel than most of the bars downtown. If you can, snag a seat upstairs on the "rooftop" bar.
The food is all small plate stuff, but it's all good. Service is usually really good especially if you can get a seat at the LLLLLLLLLooooooooooNNNNNNNg bar.
Our first stop on New Years Eve was Sazerac for some cocktails. Great time with so many friends coming from all directions. We spent some time on rooftop bar area and enjoyed the awesome weather. Then 11:50 pm came around and many of us headed down to the main level to watch the Ball drop on TV. Celebrate!!!
Review Source:I previously wrote a pretty bad review for this place. I'm retracting it. Why!? Because I ate there. The food's awesome and reasonably priced. I still think the drinks are too expensive for Asheville, but whatever. I'll pay New York City prices for a New York City quality dining experience.
I do however think there are a number of things that need to be improved with this place. It looks like Target decorated it. The wooden thingy over the top of the bar is pretty cool. Think about it. You've made a Cajun style cocktail bar and you've turned it into a modern take on a 16 year old girl's dream bedroom. It's weird. It should be woody and dark and slightly confusing. Its not a very cozy atmosphere either. booths maybe? There was an odd LED spotty fixture over our table. It was super bright. And there are TVs also. Kind of antisocial atmosphere.
There was an issue with the service also. The service itself was awesome. The bartenders were extremely nice and helpful. I live in New York and I understand that you order bar food from the bar and you don't ask your server to split up your checks etc. Being born in the south and waiting tables there, I understand that southerners first of all don't want to deal with anything like that and aren't going to start. That's where the disconnect started. There were two bartenders who were tending bar and serving people. JUST TWO PEOPLE! Talk about a shitty job. While I was there some lady freaked out at one of the bartenders. The bartender basically told her to fuck off which is something I love seeing. Totally enhanced my dining experience. The place is awkwardly shaped to have cocktail waitresses, but something needs to be done to accommodate for that. I felt like a lot of the guests were really uncomfortable as a result. Hire a barback maybe? A barback/ server?
So another visit to my hometown and another visit to Sazerac. Â Located pretty much centrally in the town, this bar is a bit more upscale in its look and feel.
You'll see a good mix of folks from locals to folks from Charlotte (as I did on this particular visit) to tourist........and God knows where in the heck they came from *wink*.
This time I stayed away from the fancy cocktails, but rather consumed a particular beer I liked. Â Service was good, though I find I always have to "call" bartenders over to service me...why is that? Â If you seen an empty beer bottle I would think you want to offer me another one....bartenders at this place just don't see it that way....it almost has a European feel when they do that...like it is an honor for us to be there giving them our money and business? Â But as a working American, I don't see it that way...love the space and location, service...eh....A-Ok. *wink*
This is truly a hip Creole restaurant with an oh la la modern interior. Two rounds of incredible cocktails later - honestly some of the best potent potables we've ever had. I sipped a classic Sazerac. Brian downed a Melpomene: Tragedy a magical mix of tequila, apple, lemon, ginger and garnished with a jalapeno slice. Food was good, but honestly not very filling. We had the Pan Seared Scallops and the Roasted Pork Loin. Just go for drinks and you won't be sad.
Review Source:Love! Well let's be honest, I may just be in love with Asheville, but this is one of those spots I could see myself becoming a regular at if we locals. Â As soon as we walked in I felt at home. Â The bartenders were attentive and willing to discuss the various drink options....the downstairs bar is this long almost old school diner/dive looking spot with flat screens above the alcohol which played old black & white movies.....and just fun people socializing and having fun. Â We ventured upstairs to check out the 2nd floor bar and were happy to discover a roof top! Â Scored a table outside and enjoyed our late night cocktail under the stars and in some NC summer heat. Â Was the perfect way to end a great weekend.
Review Source:Wonderful drinks. Â Terrible service. Â
I frequent Sazerac a lot because I love their cocktails. Â However, the last couple of times I've been there I've had terrible service and I'm going to give my ratings accordingly.
I brought my mom here for a cocktail and sunset on the outdoor patio. Â Upon arriving we waited at least 10 minutes before anyone came to our table. Â I finally went to the downstairs bar to inquire if I needed to order there and was told the waitress would be right up. Â When she finally arrived, we ordered two cocktails and two waters. Â The cocktails arrived after about 10-15 minutes. Â The waters never arrived.
When we asked our waitress for a check, she instructed us to settle up at the downstairs bar. Â A few minutes later, we stopped at the downstairs bar where the bartender proceeded to check out 2 tables that came down after us. Â We were obviously there first with credit card in hand yet no one acknowledged us. Â When I inquired about this with him, he basically said it wasn't his issue and to find our server and bring it up with her. Â
On a positive note, the cocktails were great and you don't have to tip for horrible service.
One of my favorite spots. The drinks are excellent, some appeal to me more than others but the staff are knowledgeable. They always help if I have trouble deciding. Â The staff are always on top of it. My friends and I always receive great service. Â I haven't tried much of the food but the lump crab soup is very good.
Review Source:Beautiful decor, very modern. Came on a rainy night where my roommate & I witnessed a first date, a wine/cheese tasting, & a bridal shower party. There are two floors and a balcony. Long and narrow even though it's big.
I had the recommended Terpischore, which I didn't really like. My roommate had a sweeter drink, the Love Poetry.
A few friends and I were in Asheville on vacation and wanted to try this bar out based on other reviews and ratings.
The bar is quaint. Â Though we can on a slow night, I can see how the tight space can get quite crowded. Â We only hung out on the first floor so I don't know how well the second floor and deck size out.
The bartender was very friendly and quick with service. Â He seemed to know everyone who walked in.
Though I only stuck with a few beers, the beer/wine/alcohol selection seemed pretty vast.
Overall atmosphere is just fun. Â People getting noisy and obviously enjoying themselves.
If I were to visit Asheville again, I'd probably stray away from this bar though.
Came here for the sazeracs, stayed here for the other drinks.
Thought it was great to see a bar named Sazerac in downtown Asheville, after trying their sazerac then moving onto their other great drinks I was hooked. Â They have a very creative mixed drink menu and apparent from some perfectly prepared mint juleps, I've had some other fantastic unconventional drinks. Â I've only been to their first floor bar, but it sounds like they have a 2nd story and rooftop? Â The first floor bar is a bit cozy (not a lot of room to walk through the bar and the tables to the side), but has character. Â They also offer a mainly French menu, that looks really good.
Pros:
Fantastic Drinks
Nice atmosphere
Cons:
Can get a bit crowded
Drinks are a bit pricey
I hate bars but this one may have changed my mind.
Sazerac is large, unfortunately I was unable to experience the deck,  and very sparsely decorated. But the sparseness in decor is easy to ignore when you taste the complexity of the drinks and food. In the drink category we had  the Melpomene, Thalia, and Terpsichore. Each one was decorated with a main component of the drink (jalapeno, basil, and ginger) and were well mixed. The Terpsichore was my favorite  the grapefruit and ginger complimented each other nicely. One of the bartenders gave us a recipe for the Thalia which was really nice.
Most of the food on the menu looked exquisite. But the creme bruelle was the standard. Nothing really stood out about it and it didn't crackle enough.
I would avoid the desserts, but the drinks here are fantastic.
a good place for an evening drink. romantic atmosphere and very good lighting. a nice place for a date night on the roof top bar.. or a fun time around the sofa with girlfriends and a SAZERAC!!!!! the selection of drinks is nice, and i would like to go back and try the snacks.
a nice change of pace for asheville... reminds me of a place in chicago called rodan!!!!
Like so many places in Asheville, this place was HUGE. Two floors plus a roof deck. I was there on a Thursday night and it still wasn't remotely crowded. This can be good or bad depending on your perspective. I was in the mood for socializing, so it was a bit of a bummer.
Friendly staff, great drink menu - I only wish I'd been hungry to try the unique and eclectic menu.
Sazerac, named after it's namesake drink, is a cute little place to grab a cocktail and "upscale snack" in Asheville. It definitely has a bit of an "artsy vibe" to it- perfect for this town.
While it was too cold during my visit to sit on the rooftop deck, I hear it is quite nice. We, instead, sidled up to the bar and ordered a drink. They have a nice specialty cocktail list- with all kinds of things from Sazerac, to Pimm's Cup to Mint Julep to Kir Royale. I settled on my old stand by of "goose and soda" while my friend had a beer. We also ordered the cheese plate as the people next to us were enjoying it and after a hectic day without lunch it seemed like the perfect compliment.
Our drinks came up quickly, but that cheese plate was a bit elusive. So much so that my friend actually cancelled the order since we were heading out to another place for dinner and needed to leave. The manager came over with it right away- full of apologies (they had gotten slammed and the kitchen got backed up). He then comped the cheese plate and we were happy campers once again.
It was a simple plate- a little blue cheese, a little brie, some white cheddar, candied walnuts, almonds all served with toasted bread. It was just the right size and served as an appetizer for our dinner reservation a few blocks away.
Love little places like this where they want you to be happy and they pour a good drink. If I lived in Asheville- Sazerac would be my "go to" bar. Perfect for meeting friends, a date or even just relaxing alone.
