I visit Scratches now and then. Â Today I was "Jonesing" their Mushroom Burger. Â I usually thoroughly enjoy this burger. Â Today, however, it let me down a little. Â I asked for it to be cooked medium but the burger I was served was medium well to we'll done and in some serious need of basic seasoning such as salt and pepper. Â Even though today's burger was a bust, I will order it again because I know how good it can be.
The server came over just as Happy Hour was ending and asked if we would be interested in having another beer. Â He also reminded us that Happy Hour was almost over and suggested that he go ahead and add the beers to our tab before it ended to ensure we still got them at the Happy Hour price. Â Awesome suggestion. Â In addition, he kindly offered to hold bringing the additional beers over until we finished the ones we already had. Â Since it was an extremely humid evening and we were out on the patio so holding our beers was much appreciated. Â This type of customer service coupled with my previous mushroom burger (and my other favorite, their Brooklyn Pastrami sandwich) is why I 4 star rated this establishment.
I love Scratch Magoo's although I don't get there as often as I'd like... It's really not that far from where I live, but it's one of those places that when I go there, I feel like I'm on sort of a mini vacation. Â It's a quaint little area, and I always make a point to stop at the Brandywine Zoo for a bit, and then take a nice walk by the river... Â A couple of times a year, I make a day of it and always stop at Scratch Magoo's for lunch - I've never bothered to try anywhere else...
Review Source:I went for St. Patrick's Day. Â They dealt with the crowds very well, even though this does not seem like the kind of place that is used to having that many people in it. Â
A nice list of interesting beers. Â I was sticking to liquor at this point in the night, but the list was impressive. Â The mixed drinks I ordered were simple one liquor drinks that don't need any skill to make, but they were prepared quickly (and pretty cheaply, which was unexpected on a holiday). Â
Quick service, even though the bar area inside was pretty cramped. Â The interior has a darker, sort of trendy look to it. Â The back room is wall to wall tables, which seemed to let people carve out a section of the place for themselves. Â I enjoyed spending time out of the patio, even though it was pretty cold. Â There is a second bad out back, which had a more casual look to it. Â The patio seems like it would be a big hit during warmer months.
Great bar to go to after work. They have some really good mixed drinks and craft beers. Went here on St. Patty's day as well and it was super packed! Tons of fun but I would say that most of the people that come in to this establishment are like 26-27 and older. Had their shrimp tacos and they were delicious. Love their guacamole too!
Review Source:What can I say. Â One of my Trolley Square/40 acres go-to establishments. Â Excellent, and I mean excellent beer list. Â Craft beers from all over. Â Every style of beer is repesented, and the staff and manager can speak extensively on each one. Â They know their product. Â If mixed drinks are what you have a hankerin' for that is covered, too. Â I had probably the most perfect extra dry vodka martini with three olives and no wood made for me here. Â It can sometimes get crowded and hard to make your way through the bar, as the front is very, very narrow. Â
The deck area is one of the best in Trolley. Â Top three, I would say. Â There is a bar out there, and you can also dine alfresco. Â
The food is excellent. Â I've sampled just about the entire menu, and have not had a bad meal there yet. Â The burgers especially stand out to me, as do the cheese steaks. Â Also give the other items a try. Â Adult Grilled Cheese, pastrami and the salads. Â The kitchen is fast and fresh, and everything is made the way I ask. Â The specials are excellent. Â Check out Taco Tuesday or the burger specials! Â The drink specials are also a great value.
Weekend brunch is wonderful, with a special menu, and specials on Bloody Marys, Mimosas, Orange Crushes and 007's. Â
The staff is friendly, courteous and very knowledgable about their products, from drinks to food. Â This is a popular bar and can get very busy any night of the week, so sometimes you may have to wait a couple minutes at the bar, but that is the same anywhere on Delaware Avenue.
Also, get a Shemp Card. Â It's one of the best rewards programs I've ever been a part of. Â I can get rewarded for eating great food and being a flagrant alcoholic? Â Yes, please.
I highly recommend Scratch Magoo's. Â They made me feel like a regular from the first time I went there. Â Check it out, you won't be sorry.
After time at the http://Delart.org, stopped here, after seeing it on Philly Foodies. Nice, local bar. Clean. Friendly bartender. Good craft brew bottled selection, but we opted for a Hendricks and tonic, and Absolut peach and soda. Ordered chicken white bean chili, more like soup though. Thin broth with little flavor. Also ahi tuna bites, ordered rare, got them well done. Ok, 0-2, so far. But the nachos were wonderful. Crisp chips, lots of cheese, nice sweet sauce, sour cream, chicken, quacamole, and fresh sliced jalapeños. Would go back if in the neighborhood.
Review Source:After a long day of moving into our new place, we headed to Scatches for a late dinner. It was our lucky day...$2 tacos on Tuesday! Wow, the tacos are great. The tortilla is slightly grilled so it gives the taco great flavor. Comes with a side of sour cream and guacamole, too. Highly recommend the tacos (steak or chicken).
We ordered the salmon Greek salad...this was great!! Nice piece of salmon with asparagus, artichokes, feta and roasted red peppers over mixed greens. The homemade dressing is good, too. Huge portion for salad, I ate the other half for lunch the next day.
The server recommended the buffalo chicken sandwich and wow, this was amazing! Homemade buffalo sauce, great piece of chicken and homemade roll. This was amazing!
They have a great appetizer menu and the beer menu was amazing. The interior is really nice too, looks like a restaurant you would find in Philly. It is a great location and only a few blocks from our new place. It seems like it would be a fun place for drinks on the weekend and happy hour.
Scratches. Â I've been drinking and eating here for over 15 years, and I must admit it has gotten better over the past 3 of those years. Â Someone in management or in ownership made the call to step up the beer and the food, and ever since the interior make over the whole atmosphere has improved. Â I do miss the days of my early twenties lounging on the back deck deck (remember the old one), sippin dollar beers, but I digress... Anyway, Scratches is a Trolley Square staple, and has a pretty solid Happy Hour with good beer and food specials. Â I have recently friended them on Facebook, and now get sent the daily specials for lunch, HH, and late night. Â I can highly recommend the $5 burgers, selection of Happy Hour apps (great wings, pot stickers, and hummus), and the beer selection is now excellent. Â Scratches now offers a multitude of seasonal, and micro brews along with the typical Yuengling, Miller Light, etc. Â The newer patio/deck area is decent, and a great spot to suck back a few cold ones in the warmer months. Â Oh yeah, they still do beer bucket specials.
Review Source:I like scratches for two reason Happy Hour and late night beer buckets. This place used to be divey and filled to the brim with gross guys but after they remodeled it the clientele changed more yuppers and the like now frequent this place which explains why they decided to start serving brunch. Great idea poor execution they have 6 brunch entree options that are all standard and subpar. The brunch Bevs were BOOTY WHACK my mimosa tasted like cough syrup Blah! My brunch date wasn't a fan of her Bloody Mary either. The food just didn't do it for me the potatoes were way to large in size and some of them were over cooked and others still a little hard. The portion size was great but id rather get a little less food id actually enjoy than a large mass of Blah. The breakfast burrito was ok nothing to write home about. I probably will stick to Scratch's for my calories of the liquid variety
Review Source:This is my last review of the places we went on our Delaware road trip. This doesn't necessarily have to do with Scratch Magoo's but what is the deal with people in Delaware and their staring? I'm not exaggerating when I say people were starting at me and my friend like we had two heads.
Ok, this place doesn't look like a "Scratch Magoo's". To me a place named that would be a dirty Irish bar. This place looks like some place in a magazine or something. I guess I'm saying it's more "upscale" then the name suggests. But to it's credit/detriment it might be the first place I've seen people wearing fedoras and sweatpants. But what else should you expect from Phillies fans.
The service was mediocre but the food we had, crab rangoon and the philly cheese steak rolls were good.
The bar selection was decent and had stuff I wasn't familiar with.
There was an outdoor area but it was cold and rainy so I didn't explore. All in all I'd go back to check out happy hour and sample more beers.
The only thing was we tried to go to Kelly's first but they were closing so they said the best bar, besides Kelly's, was Scratch Magoo's. Really?? I hope they meant in the neigjborhood.
Great staff who make sure to keep up with our multiple $10 buckets and put up with our crazy jukebox selections whenever we drop in. Â We're usually around when "Strokin" and "Tenderness" are played in close succession... Â
The extra space they got between the front bar and the wall after the "Scratchy McUpscales" remodel was a lifesaver. Â Oddly, the weekend crowd fluctuates from packed to empty to packed again... Â We usually stick to the inside bar, but the outside is pretty nice too.
I haven't eaten there too many times, but what I've had of the typical bar fare has been good. Â There's lots of beer choices for those who aren't into light beers. Â They also accept the Shemp card if you frequent Shellhammer's and Tyler's.
Easily, my favorite bar in Wilmington, never a cover (even on Loop nights), plus I met my wife there!
The only other thing I can say is go there...Now!
I am a regular @ Scratch's primarily due to their delicious Tijuana Turkey Burgers (which are 1/2 price on Mondays)! Â They have affordable drink specials which I really appreciate as a girl on a budget : ) Â The staff are fantastic - Jason, Pete, Rachael, Brian, Chris, Dan - attentive, and always make sure I enjoy my experience. Â The atmosphere is chic and comfortable. Â The outdoor area is awesome in the warmer weather - especially the "living room." Â In my opinion, best bar in Trolly!
Review Source:Trolley Square may have a lot of bars, but none that really keep me coming back for more, except for Scratch Magoo's. Their beer list actually goes past light beers (don't worry, the buckets of ___ light are still offered), and the food is honestly pretty darn good bar food. But what makes Scratch Magoo's stand out is the outdoor area. There is a cabana type area that makes you feel like king/queen of magoos if you are so lucky enough to grab that location. The rest of the outdoor area is nice too though, they do a good job of having you forget that you're in wilmington, de.
Review Source:I am a regular at Scratch's as I happen to live only about 100 steps away from their door and have been going there for about 5 years. I eat out for a large portion of my meals and I have to say that on any given day if I am undecided on where to go, I will choose to eat at Scratch's most of the time. While I am very fond of many other bars in my neighborhood most of the dishes here just appeal to me more.
My favorites have to be the sandwiches and burgers. The sandwiches, such as the Tuscan and Chicken Focaccia, are just the right blend of interesting ingredients and standard classics and are all clearly made very well and very consistently. The burgers, in my opinion are the best I've ever had, except for maybe Col. Mustard's in college... but it's a close call. Even better 1/2 price on Mondays!
They have great specials on most of the weekdays however I would like to see maybe a Thursday special and maybe a Sunday one too like they used to have. I really like the remodeled look however I loved it plenty when it was all dinged up too : )
The beer selection is great and not only do they have a lot of interesting things in bottle but a great selection on tap also. I couldn't believe it when I saw Dogfish Head Chicory Stout on tap once... nice! Also, the selection is always rotating which is even better. Personally I would like to see maybe a few more foreign beers in bottle and maybe a regularly rotating Dogfish Head tap, currently it seems that they keep a rotating variety of Victory on tap all the time along with the standard domestics that I occasionally drink as filler.
Lastly I think the staff that works there is great. Very attentive and always accommodating even when they're ridiculously busy. I always feel welcome and feel right at home. The prices are pretty reasonable too as far as being in line with what I would expect for a bar in this area and of this caliber.
I would highly recommend getting a Shemp Card too, I love the addition of this and I can't tell you how many times I've maxed it out... not sure if that's good or bad : )
If you're ever in the area Scratch's is a sure to please choice!
I like Scratch's very much. Â Please allow me to break it down:
Beverages - Scratch's has one of the better beer selections in Wilmington, which keeps me coming back. Â They always have two or three craft brews on tap and an excellent bottle list. Â I have not done much in the way of wine or mixed drinks here, but why would I when I see Lancaster Milk Stout on tap as soon as I walk in.
Atmosphere - They remodeled recently and everything looks very chic. Â In fact, they probably could have gone a little more casual, but I like the decor very much. Â There is also a nice outdoor area that is secluded and a great place to sit in the warmer weather.
Service - Always been great. No complaints.
Food - I have eaten here a couple times and everything has been delicious. Â I think the burgers here are definitely the best that you will find in Wilmington. Â
My only caveat is to steer clear of this place on Friday and Saturday night unless you want to tackle your way through a crowd of rowdy 21 years olds...but that could be said about any of the trolley bars. Â I guess I am just getting old...
Very good Sunday brunch. Had the breakfast burrito and it was delicious. They also had great brunch drink specials.
There is a beautiful deck in the back that is open when its warm and makes for a great brunch experience.
I've only been to as a bar (not restaurant since it flips at night) once and it was before it was remodeled last year.
The remodeling is great and a little more chic then some of the other bars in the area. It's really the only place I'll go in Trolley Square that more often resembles a hangout for the cast of Jersey Shore and not a place for young professionals. Scratch breaks that mold and offers good food and drinks in a nice environment.
If you get tired of Rooney's or Logan house this a solid place for Happy hour. Â They have 2 dollar beers and half price appetizers which will keep you from spending to much money. Â Also, the outdoor area behind/onside of the restaurant is great but is hard to get a seat unless you are there early. Â I would have given this place another star but the place is very narrow which can make it hard to move around in once there are a couple people by the bar.
