We got a take out on a late Sunday afternoon, and I really liked the food here. We got Dal Makhani, Butter Chicken, Paneer Makhani and Veg Biryani, and the dal was some of the best I've had in a while.

The veg biryani quantity was amazing, enough to feed four people, and it tasted quite decent as well. A good value for money place.

This place is solid for an indian fix when you want a little of everything. Price is amazing-everything looked fresh and the server kept going over to stir everything up or refill. Service was very good and although it isnt a pretty interior I would hardly say it was dirty. Fresh naan-tandoori-all solid. Spice level wasnt enough for me but seeing that indian is not something that is easy to whip up at home I would say this place is great for your indian fix--on a budget!

ummm, I don't think I'll come back here. There was nothing terrible about this experience per se, but the food was below average (albeit priced accordingly) and the cleanliness was questionable.

Buffets ALWAYS freak me out a bit. All I can ever think of is how long the food has been sitting out for and what fly had the misfortune of hovering to close to the food only to be sucked under into a delicious, yet slow demise. But I by pass those thoughts and still eat here anyway. For the price it is an amazing deal and the food is A-Ok. I am no professional when it comes to judging authentic Indian food but it's tasty, the staff is friendly and you get your moneys worth. I come back here a lot and actually like it better than Viceroy which cost more. Keep that Naan comin'

Buffet is always under $10, Family pretty much goes here for there food every time we are in town. Food is hot and they bring out flash cooked naan's and tandoori chicken with your buffet.

This is a dive.  So for all you dive fans, just go ahead and bookmark it now.  The weekday buffet is solid, the price can't be beat.  Tastes were good, spicy just right and whether I got the meat curries or veg both were tasty and were pretty good when I mixed them into each other.  I remember coming here many years ago and liking them for the spice level and taste of their curries.  Glad the tastes were still there the other day.

In the restaurant they have signs posted which indicate a charge if you waste food.  I find these kind of funny, a few points why.  They have situated a great many seats in here to maximize on money intake.  They have chosen shoddy tableware and seats that are comfortable for about twenty minutes max.  When the buffet has a charge lower than most other buffets on Devon, they could ask if you want that sloppy plate to go for that so called charge.  Just saying.

Now earlier I mentioned this place is a dive.  See the other day I was standing by the front door to my place.  I have been thinking about painting for some time, to add a new zest to the place.  Looking at the walls made me reminisce the walls here at Sher-A-Punjab.  The walls at the restaurant are fucking filthy.  Downright nasty looking, with definite war stains from buffet goers of years past.  Dated? Fuck yeah.  They need to hire a cleaning service with a steamer to go to "town" on their interiors.  Hot water wash the walls, tables, floors, heck they could do the ceiling while they're at it.  A new splash of paint everywhere would be great as well.  You'd think Gordon Ramsey stopped by, if only they would update.  Alas.. they probably won't and will keep the look as it adds to the history of the place.

Not the best Indian fare I've had, but for the buffet, this place is a pretty good deal! Their samosas are some of the best I've had. However, their vegetarian options are kind of disappointing. They have a sign up that says if you don't finish all your food they will charge you extra, which I find funny but can respect.

No! No! No!  A friend and I went here today.  We sit down to eat, take a few bites of food, and I glance toward the chair beside him.  A huge COCKROACH is casually crawling around on the chair back on the chair beside him!  We lost our appetites and let the waiter know. He says nothing, but removes the chair.  What was disturbing is that he behaved as if this wasn't an uncommon event and didn't seem very surprised there was a cockroach strolling around.  He didn't apologize or anything and just returned to the cash register.  My friend and I went up and told him we didn't think we could stay and eat after that.  He just said "okay," and we left.  UGHHH.  I'm still creeped out!

Had the weekend lunch buffet here the other day, and for $7.95 you really can't go wrong. I was basically the only caucasian in a sea of Indian peeps here so I knew I was in good hands. I dug the food and the for that price, who couldn't...

    Enjoy Suckas'!!!

Honestly, just as the star rating indicates, this really IS AS GOOD AS IT GETS!

I have been a loyal customer at Sher-A-Punjab for 4 years now.  With so many options up and down Devon Avenue, you can't go wrong with this place.

Yes, it may not have the classy marble tables and countertops, or new carpeting, or fancy chandeliers or lighting like many of the other establishments nearby.   But what they lack for in decor, they more than make up for the taste of the food.  A good number of well rounded options to please any palette, food is always hot, and the buffet is perfect!  You can eat until your heart (& stomach) is content.  You can even wrap it up with 2 or 3 options in the buffet desserts!

I will continue to try other places around the neighborhood, but if I am aching for some curry in a hurry, to Sher-A-Punjab I will run to in a flurry!

Uhm, I'll pass, thanks. I love, love, LOVE their Downers Grove location. It's easily my favorite Indian food restaurant. Clean, delicious, close, and friendly. So when some friends and I were looking for a place to go on Devon Ave. for Indian, I obviously recommended their Chicago location. I beyond was embarrassed to have brought my friends here.

The curries were old tasting, under seasoned, thick. Dosas were soft and mushy, yet clung together and tore apart when you tried to take one on to your plate. Offerings were few. Bathrooms were filthy. Staff was nice enough, but nothing like the staff on hand at their Downers Grove location. Pretty much the polar opposite of their other location.

I felt like it was a wasted trip to Devon Ave. with so many other delicious Indian food restaurants within walking distance from where we parked the car. We obviously could have stayed out in the 'burbs and received better service.

2 1/2 stars.  I took my friend here for her first time eating Indian food.  There was nothing "Wrong" but it was still disapointing. Looked fine and served at the correct temperature, but the versions of butter chicken, lamb stew, rice pudding were not quite right.  And I was so sad about the lentils, they were my least favorite of any place.  The Tandoori chicken was moist, the Nan was good, but I would reccomend going elsewhere.  For her first time this wasn't the best representaion of good Indian food. I wish I had taken her elsewhere.

This little joint could be easily missed as it's in the heart of Devon Ave. where you can find many indian restaurants around. When I walked in, I was not impressed with the way it looked...Pretty basic and nothing exciting. I expected mediocre quality food.  I quickly changed my mind when I tried it. The lamb was what stood out. I've had good and bad lamb. This one is by far one of the best ones I've had. It was tender, juicy and flavorful. The rest of the food was just as good (i am just a sucker for nicely prepared lamb).

One thing I didnt like was the fact that they did not serve tea masala in the evening. I like my chai at any time of the day.

The last time I was here, C4 had a great experience.

We told our host for night about our club and she happily gave us suggestions for other places to try and others we should maybe try to avoid. I appreciated that she was honest and seemed interested in our venture.

Because the food is not as spicy as I would like, I have to dock a half of a star. The other half of a star is because the butter chicken is a little too plain for me. I've had extremely good butter chicken elsewhere. Why can't they all just make it the same exact way to perfect goodness!!!?? It's okay, it wasn't bad.

I love the fact that they have a few chutneys for me to play with and that their samosas are made fresh (never frozen!).

The buffet is only 10 dollars with 1 dollar tax and NOT limited to just lunch. They always do dinner buffet too. Definitely worth your while to stuff your face here at Sher-A-Punjab.

I cannot believe more Yelpers haven't mentioned how filthy this place is!  The food tasted okay but even though this place is BYOB, there is not enough wine in the world that could make me overlook the horrible sanitation.  Keep in mind this is coming from a woman who has eaten street food from vendors in Cambodia, Thailand, China and India.  I can turn a blind eye to a certain amount of grime but it never stopped at this place.

The menu was greasy and stained.  Carpeting (always a poor choice in a restaurant) was dirty, the tablecloth had food smears on it and worst of all, there was some sort of nasty food residue/splatter all over the wall.  Every time I turned to look at my husband during the conversation I marveled at how the stains and bits of stuck on food got on the wall.  Was there a food fight?  I won't even mention the bathrooms.  I would love to call the health department on this place.

Also, there is no ventilation.  It was a 58 degree evening and I (a girl who's always freezing) felt like I was dining in a swamp despite being in short sleeves.  Both husbands had to undo a couple of shirt buttons and it wasn't due to spicyness.

Had our friends not been already seated with their bottle of wine open when we arrived, I would have walked out.  I love a good bargain, but I'm afraid this $10 buffet has turned me off Indian for a while.

Continues to be my favorite Buffet on Devon! Lots of choices to choose from, But for me I always get the Lamb and Butter chicken. The samosas are huge and ryita(SP) sauce is a must. The Tandoori chicken is always full of flavor and if you like naan they always give you more than you can eat.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that the restrooms are always dirty, but on this last visit it was a surprise to find it fairly clean. Also I would like ice in my ice water.

This is definitely a must and should be tried at least once.

Came here for dinner tonight with an Indian friend of mine. The meal was... an experience, to say the least.

Upon sitting down, the waiter asked if we wanted the buffet; we said no, and he was incredulous, but ultimately gave us dinner menus. We started with an order of samosas; a no-brainer at most places. Then, one of the strangest things that I've ever seen happen at a restaurant in my life transpired. The waiter came to the buffet (right in front of our table, literally), with a plate. My first thought was "oh that's nice, he's gonna eat dinner - must have been a long day at work." I saw him lay a napkin on top of the plate, place two samosas from the buffet on the plate, and serve it to us as an appetizer. The samosas weren't bad, but I was more than a little put off by this - when one takes the plunge on a deep-fried item such as a samosa, one expects them to be freshly prepared, at a minimum. The meal could not have started more inauspiciously.

To my pleasant surprise, this meal came back harder than Illinois against Arizona in the 2005 Elite 8. Vindaloo packed a serious punch, with none of the caustic burn which dominates the flavor profile of lesser vindaloos. The rashmi kabob was delicious, flavored with yogurt and lime, and simply grilled to tender perfection. Both of our naans (aloo paratha, garlic naan) were excellent accompaniments. This was pretty uniformly amazing Indian food, which managed to pull off the small miracle of making my experience a pleasant one after the samosa screw-up.

All in all, I'm understandably put off from dining in at this establishment again; there is no excuse for serving samosas that have sat all day at a buffet to a diner who ordered them a la carte. However, I'd definitely eat here again in a format that didn't necessitate waiter service - the lunch buffet is a steal at $7, and the food was delicious enough for repeated carrying out.

I have been here twice in a few years, and I am more than willing to drive the 40 miles to get a piece of that lunch buffet!

The Rogan Josh is excellent, if bony. The Gulab Jamun is great, and I loved the tandoori chicken...Naan is great, I bogart as much as my fat as can, the Indians here don't mind, they are nice people :)

Highly recommended for a cheap, filling and somewhat spicy meal! Love this place!

Went here for lunch buffet. WHAT A STEAL! I had about 10 or so choices of delicious and fresh Indian food. It was more than i could handle. i was stuffed.
Sure, the decor isnt great, are any restaurants on Devon that glamorous? I think not.
For the price, the quality of the delicious food, and the selection for under $10? its worth the trip. Delicious Naan bread and Tandori chicken on the side for free?
ok enough! im stuffed already! :P

I really enjoyed the lunch buffet here.  It was an incredible deal.

The restaurant was empty when I got there at noon on Saturday.  Literally empty.  We were the only ones there.  That made me nervous, but I'd read reviews about the food.

The buffet had a lot of good of good options.  There were large well spiced samosas.  They brought nan and tandori chicken to the table.  (And the chicken was actually moist unlike a lot of places).

There was a good variety of options on the buffet, chicken, lamb, vegetarian.  It would be easy to find something for everyone here!

This seems like a great place to have a large group lunch on a weekend.  We had the whole place to ourselves, the service was good, the food was good, and our total was under $21 for two people including the tip.

    One word - SPICY!!
    Samosas? spicy.
    Butter chicken? Spicy!
    Tikka masala? SPICY!
    Kebab? Spiiiicy!
Even the Saag paneer was spicy, a shocker for me who is used to mellow spinachy goodness.

Luckily their Lassi was up to the task of quenching my mouthfires. They also had some of the finest garlic naan I've ever tasted. Come for the naan, stay for the spicy!

I have to comment on the crispy cheese fritters, they were totally delicious and hilarious. Chicken-fried paneer slices! It tasted like KFC meets Pizza Hut cheesey crust.

I like the casual feel of the place and will be back to try the buffet.

    Ringa ringa ringa.

I have driven past this place 100 times, and always wanted to eat here.

So, I gathered up two of my favourite homosexuals and drove up to Devon in my mid size SUV.

The first thing I noticed was that all the wait staff were middle age men - and that the restaurant was exceptionally clean.

Sadly, it was also rather empty.  Which possibly meant a few things :

    a) The food was bad
    b) It wasn't busy
    c) My press agent had booked out the whole place for us

It turned out the answer was b).  Which ended up being a good thing because we got exceptional service.

To start, they place a plate of hot tandoor chicken on the table.  You just wander up to the buffet, and grab a plate and start dishing.  I started with palak paneer which is a pureed spinach with paneer cheese cubes.  I also grabbed some basmati rice, and sat back down.  The table was already laden with silverware and roti.  But who uses silverware to eat Indian food?

When in Rome! (or Mumbai!), just eat with your hands.  Its more fun and authentic.

Second trip was for some butter chicken and more rice.  Food kept coming out of the kitchen, and replacing empty bins on the buffet.  There were actually a few other people eating - besides the handsome men I came in with.

I ended with galub jamun, which are like little donut holes soaked in a warm sugary syrup.  Very delicious.

Then the bill came.  A whopping $30 for all three of us.

We then left to do a quick grocery shop in one of the city's best markets, and grabbed an icecream at Patel Café.

If you are eager to try Indian food, this is a great place to try it out.  The price is right, and the variety is amazing.

Also, there might be hot homosexuals eating dinner there.

It's hard to say there's a Indian/Pakistani restaurant that I don't like.  However, in terms of quality, this is probably towards the bottom of the list.  I've been twice and both time were similar.  I found the the buttered chicken and biryani to be extremely salty and the tandoori chicken was quite puny.  The naan was fine.   The buffet has the basics, but nothing standing out as wonderful.

There is one positive note about this place.  When all of the other Indian buffet places are closed during the crossing over from lunch to dinner (3PM-5PM), they are still open.  Pricewise, I believe it's the cheapest buffet you'll find.  However, spend a few extra dollars to actually enjoy it.

So last week, I'm cold chillin' at the pad, winning and shit, when I get the following text from Krsna:
"Want to go to Devon for dinner? I'm driving."
I replied, "A. You don't know how to drive, especially on the right side of the road. B. Homie don't dig on no fish."
Krsna: "Not the seafood Devon. The street one."
    Me: "Ite"

So an hour later, we're rolling 3 deep in a rented A3. (Did you know zipcar rented Audis?) My 2 'mos are up front pumping the Eurotrash Ibiza Megamix with me, the breeder, in back, knuckles white, hoping I don't find myself deceased in the back of this Nazi sled due to user error.

Somehow, we made it, ate the buffet, and went to the nearby grocery store, where I got the best spicy dehydrated mango ever!

This is the only buffet place I go on Devon!  I didn't know jack about Indian/Pakistani food when I first started college.  Then I met my friends who took me out to this place.  Boy was I in for something different.

Let me get something straight - this is one of those shitty looking with a questionable bathroom sort of places.  But the food is cheap and delicious.  I still eat here.  The buffet's still good, the mango lassi almost perfect, the naan warm and as good as naan can be.  (I don't claim to know Indian/Pakistani food well at all.  When something tastes good, it's good.  I stick with my rule.)

If you're looking for the a quick fix for Indian food, this is a good place to go.  The dinner buffet has a bit of everything; butter chicken, lamb, samosas, salad, and the usual suspects in vegetable dishes.  Also included is tandoori chicken and fresh naan.  Your tall glass of ice water is refilled religiously.
Atmosphere? Meh.  But the service is quick and staff is friendly.
Buffet dishes can run spicy, so order off the menu for the kids if you want to play it safe.  Great for families.  High chairs available, but no changing table in restroom.  Actually, you probably should skip the restroom if possible.

I've heard about this place as both great and terrible and I think it runs sort of in the middle. After dining at Punjabi Dhabha the week before, this place didn't have to try hard to impress. And maybe it didn't try hard, but I was, relatively speaking, pleased.

See, there were some ups and downs here. Ups included the wide vegetarian selection with saag paneer, mattar paneer, two types of daal, vegetable curry, masala dosa, etc. in addition to the usual salad and samosa appetizers. They didn't have my beloved pakora, but the variety of other options more than made up for it.

The food here is spicier than at most buffets, more medium-hot than super mild, which I appreciated. I love the options that buffets give indecisive people like myself, but I always want to add more heat.

Also a bonus was the delicious, warmer and fresher than average naan. The naan was soft and chewy, with a few of those thinner, crisp areas that help break up of monotony of the pillow-y goodness of the bread. My roommate, the meat eater, also enjoyed the tandoori chicken that came with the meal.

The lassis were passable and the desserts (both kheer and gulab jamun) were good. The problems, which I came to begrudgingly accept, were that the "paneer" in the above mentioned dishes was really tofu (c'mon, you can switch them if you must, but tell me the truth), the sauces were labeled as "green hot sauce" and "red sweet sauce" or something similarly random (I assume mint and tamarind chutneys, though I'm not sure), and the bathroom had terrifying mirrors on 3 of the 4 walls so that dozens of yourself watched you at all times.

Still, the food is worth the trip, given the low cost and plethora of options. Just make sure you dig tofu and use the bathroom before showing up.

Definitely my new favorite haunt on Devon.  Their buffet is about as good as it can possibly get for the price.

We dined like kings for a mere $7.95.  If there's one thing that burns me about Indian cuisine, it's the fact that they want $13.95 for some marinated chicken chunks and then have the balls to make you pay for the rice. Not here.  Their buffet has all of the usual suspects (chana Masala, butter chicken, Lamb Gosht, curried lentils).  The food tasted sublimely fresh, the service was friendly and unobtrusive and their Samosas were some of the BEST i've ever had.

    Yum Yum Yum -

A well sized buffet that is consistently good. I've eaten here about 4-5 times now and every time I leave feeling satisfied in every aspect. I was on a special diet for a few months ...no onion or garlic and every time they would make special dishes for those of us following that diet without any hesitation or problems.

The price is great, and even though most people are getting a buffet the servers are still attentive to all the tables and bring you water, chicken and unlimited delicious bread...mmmmm.

I will continue to frequent this place...it's my fave Indian buffet. Make sure you try the cheese and peas dish...so good!

I had gone here a few years ago and while the service was good I didn't like how it looked but that has really changed!

The place looks great, clean, nice, and well lit but not too bright.

The buffet is the 8.95 and filled with deliciousness. I love their samosas, their lamb, the rice, well everything out there. The food is fresh, tasty, and filling. The waiters are kind and efficient and my water glass was always full. They also bring you tandoori chicken which is a nice addition. Good naan and punjabi!

It is a great price to get all you want of great food, not substandard at all. I am looking forward to eating here more and can't wait to take friends. After my not so great Hema's kitchen experiences I am glad to find a place that's affordable and tasty!

My fiance swears by this place so I've been here a few times. Last night we were craving some deliciousness, so we made the drive up north to Devon Ave. As we were walking to Sher-A-Punjab I saw all these other fantastic buffet places and I felt they were calling to me. But no....Sher-A-Punjab it is.

    And boy was it.

I filled my plate, sat, down, and took spoonful after spoonful of deliciousness. Sopping up all the curry with the naan. I didn't try any of the tandoori chicken, but my fiance ate it all! I might have filled my plate more than once, but we don't have to go into that here :)

Oh, and I had the little dessert balls to top everything off. Honestly, I've got no idea what these are. They taste like donutholes that have been soaking in a honey mixture. Texturally, they are mushy and wet. Taste wise? Sweet tooth heaven.

Sher-A-Punjab is definitely worth trying. If you don't like it, no biggie. You'll only be out 10 bucks. But if you do like it, nom nom nom nom. You have so much to gain! (in pounds that is)

When my parents suggested a Punjabi buffet place on Devon, I was more than skeptical, I was gripping myself. I certainly dispelled my notions when I saw the buffet and saw kadhi on the menu. For the uninitiated, kadhi is a staple Punjabi dish that best showcases its staples: yogurt and chickpea flour. This dish, when made well, is a culinary triumph. Let me tell you, the bands were marching for this version.

Yes, I admit my four stars are biased by this said kadhi, but we have to give hats off to this Lion of Punjab for offering gulab jamuns that are like clouds floating in rose flavored syrup, ginger laced saag that makes your mouth sing and a chaat bar not just on the weekend but in the middle of the week.

We'll be back when we're on the strip and maybe we'll see you there!

Sher-A-Punjab gets 5 stars for getting me started and summarily hooked on Indian cuisine.  I was taken up to Devon to foray into Indian faire and we settled on this place because it was open and cheap.  I filled my first colorful plate and dug in.  Love at first taste.  It's a hike, but I returned there several times that summer and it was great.

Now Sher-A-Punjab gets 0 stars for making me and all my friends sick last time I was there.  Also, I was there during the food changeover and the stuff floating about inside the steam table under the food dishes is disgusting. I'm a little sad that I got a peek into that steamy underword.

The food is delicious, the price is right, and most times it doesn't make you sick. Hopefully that was a fluke, as I'm sure I'll find myself here again very soon.

How does this place have 3.5 stars? Well if you look you'll see virtually all reviewers are pardesi (if you don't know what that word means... exactly..) The food they serve here is just substandard; it's as simple at that. The chicken mukhani is just a cream sauce with pink food coloring and the tandoori chicken has so much red food coloring on it I think I may have permanently saturated the cones in my retinas. The lamb and goat, if they have it that day, are just bone and gristle.  Every time I pass this place on my way to the places on Devon that are actually good, it's either empty or filled with people who have no connection to the subcontinent whatsoever. Some advice, if you go into a desi restaurant, especially on Devon, and you don't see any South Asians eating there, that's a huge signal to keep walking. Please, go to Sabri...

The name means "Lion of Punjab." If this is the food that they served them, then no wonder there are no lions left in Punjab...

Like everyone else, the food is good enough, value, blah blah blah.  There are better.  I've been to worse.

THE ONLY THING IS that they should really take down the exterminator bills from the wall behind the cash register.  Can't they at least not shatter my illusion that the place is somewhat clean?

Pretty good food and you cannot beat the price. The butter chicken is good but, I like the lamb curry better. The chicken biryani is good to just OK depending on the day. Their samosas are awesome.

I specially like the fact that they bring a sizzling plate of Tandoor chicken and naan right to your table. The naan is yummy. The minus one star is for the inconsistency in biryani.

They also have mini-dosas. I like the fact that you can get little bite size pieces of dosa instead of the huge ones. I have not tried the vegetarian section (because I totally discriminate against vegetarian food) but, my friends swear by it. They like the dal, sambar, and cauliflower dishes (ewww, cauliflower).

A decent option, if you are looking to experiment with Indian food. Or if you want a variety.

I really like Sher-A-Punjab. It's not fancy on the inside by any means but their buffet is great and well priced. You get tandoori chicken with your buffet and it's usually less than $10 a person (minus drinks). I really like the Mater Paneer and Sag Paneer. The samosas are great!

The staff is friendly and they have a pretty good amount of seating.

Again, as with any restaurant on Devon Avenue, you want to go on a weeknight if you're driving or else it will take awhile to find parking.
