Once upon a time, in this same location, there was a Thai restaurant that was one of the worst places I've ever eaten. After many assurances from other people, I finally had the pleasure of dining at Snow Spice.
Snow spice quickly became one of my favorite Thai restaurants. They make a spicy pad Thai that could burn off the worst day. They also made a delicious spicy tofu salad.
Today, following a week off near record setting suckage, I ordered dinner online. I decided to mix it up and I ordered drunken spicy noodle instead of pad Thai. They no longer had the spicy tofu salad on the menu, so I ordered spicy mushroom salad. When my order arrived, delivered by a young boy on a bike in the rain (poor kid), I excitedly paid and ran upstairs to dive into my meal. Unfortunately, I found that my vegetarian noodle dish was filled with beef. I called and explained--about three times-- what occurred and they agreed to send a replacement. I went on to the salad. Unfortunately, I'm a vegetarian and a person who does not eat fish, and it smelled and tasted like fish. It wouldn't be so much of a problem if the menu had listed fish, fish sauce, or fish paste as an ingredient. Yuck.
What's more, my replacement Drunken Spicy Noodle was not spicy. It's listed in the menu as "spicy" drunken noodle, and when given the option while ordering to choose mild, medium, or spicy, I chose spicy. The original dish--which I did pull a piece of broccoli out of while waiting 45 for the replacement-- was spicy. Did they change it because the delivery kid (who called to confirm my replacement order) saw I was white? I feel like every time a Thai restaurant realizes I'm white they give me a mild dish. Yes, I am aware that I am super pale, but I also love spicy food. Next time I order spicy bring it on.
I don't know what changed since my last order, but get your act together!
Their delivery speed is excellent, and the food quality is consistently very good. Love the peanut sauce that goes with their chicken satay. Their wontons are always crispy and delicious. I'm not sure their curry is necessarily authentic, however it IS delicious, just the right amount of spicy, Â and the veggies are top notch. Fried rice is solid. On several occasions I've had them include a bonus side with my order for free, which is just awesome.
The owner actually made my delivery once and he was incredibly friendly. All in all this is my favorite delivery spot in the neighborhood.
As someone who wants to find more Chicago places that offer good food and healthy options, Snow Spice is a great option! I strongly recommend their veggie tofu soup: it has perfect broth and huge chunks of silken tofu. If you add water you can stretch the soup further without affecting the flavor, so I like to buy a large and have it for four meals!
Review Source:I've been coming to Snow Spice for a couple of years now and it is definitely my go to Thai place. Food comes in generous portions and always tastes great. I always order the Basil Chicken and Panang Curry. Definitely the best I've had in Chicago. Even though this place isn't really a dine-in type of restaurant, the owner is extremely nice and welcoming. Overall, this place is an all-around good place to get Thai food, with great prices.
Review Source:Food is great and portions are generous. Â For take out, it's def a five star place. Â The only reason I don't give it 5 is, there's no real reason to dine there. Â Very small and no ambiance. Â But staff is friendly, food is amazing and price is great. Â We get take out from there weekly, it seems
Review Source:This place needs to get control of their delivery staff/grub hub connection.
We got our food well over 40 minutes after they told us we would. The food was cold so it took away from the flavor significantly. That being said I dont think it would be that great hot and fresh.
Regardless, I wont be back after this expensive lesson.
I really enjoy the food and delivery only took a half hour! Chicken wonton soup is excellent, crab ragoon is very good, everything else is pretty good.. Â I just didn't really like the fried the tofu. Â I also recall when their website worked it they advertise MSG free. Â So, that really motivates me to continue ordering from them. Â I also recall that when their website worked you could order online for a specific date and time. Â That's nice. Â Otherwise ordering from http://hubgrub.com works super!
Review Source:I chose to order Snow Spice last night, because my friends raved about it. Â Perhaps it's under new management or something, because the only thing that made my experience worth while was the crab rangoon.
I originally tried ordering online to get the 10% off coupon, but my browser flipped out right before I was about to hand over my credit card info, so I called instead. Â Almost an hour and a half after I had called, Snow Spice called me back. Â The driver had apparently been to my house 30 minutes before that and couldn't reach me on my phone (according to the woman who called me). Â Funny, because I had my phone next to me the entire time I waited and it never rang. Â She said she would call him right away and have him head back to my house.
Another 30 minutes later, I got a call from the sassy driver. Â He was sharp and rude on the phone with me. Â When I went out front to meet him and get my 2 hour ordeal dinner, he berated me about what kind of phone service I have, the pain in the ass my apartment is, and how I need to leave the gate unlocked (which is impossible). Â Funny, I've never had any other delivery driver make such a scene about my front gate.
Of course once my roomie and I opened our dinners, they were luke warm at best. Â The sassy driver also forgot our drinks, but at that point we were so fed up that we didn't call to get them delivered or to get refunded. Â My crab rangoon was amazingly delicious, but my pad thai was sub-par at best. Â The roomie enjoyed her cucumber salad and egg drop soup.
The icing on the cake of this whole ordeal is that I woke up bright and early this morning with the most upset tummy! Â I will never order from Snow Spice again.
This place is pretty good. That's really all I can say. It's not the best thai in the neighborhood, but it's definitely not bad. The decor isn't much to speak of, but they've always been friendly to me (I do carry-out lunch specials mostly) and their prices aren't bad. Can't speak on the delivery, I've only done take-out.
Review Source:We ordered from Snow Spice last night when our two favorite Thai places were closed and we just HAD to have Thai. Â We should have waited. Â It wasn't awful, but I'd hesitate to call it adequate. Â Maybe if I lived closer it would hold slightly more appeal, as it is really cheap. Â Here's what influenced our two-star rating:
1. Â Delivery took an hour and 25 minutes. Â Dude, we're within your delivery area. Â It shouldn't take that long. Â
2. Â Pad Thai (which we both ordered) was....meh. Â Noodles too broad, not much flavor. Â I'm okay not being punched in the mouth with flavor as long as it at least tastes fresh. Â This did not. Â
3. Â Hair in our fried tofu. Â Yeah. Â See, here's the thing. Â I know this happens. Â If the food is awesome, I'll quietly remove the hair and not say a word. Â Luckily, this never made it to either of our mouths, but I did see it and the tofu wasn't tasty enough to make that okay. Â
4. Â I never thought I'd say this, but the soy sauce that came with the free potstickers wasn't salty enough. Â
Strong points of our experience:
1. Â You can order sauce all by itself. Â Yay! Â Why don't other places do this?
2. Â Price is CHEAP. Â You get what you pay for, but I understand budget-conscious folks crave Thai, too. Â
3. Â Crab Rangoon was soooo crispy and pretty yum. Â Thumbs up for that one. Â
4. Â Free stuff if you order over $15 worth of otherwise meh food.
Yummy thai food. Since i work around the area i find myself eating there atleast once a week. Their chicken pad thai is yummy and so is the chicken fried rice. For about $6 you can get a lunch special which is very filling. I haven't had my thai food fix this week yet and i am craving it really badly.
Review Source:My go-to place for fast, cheap Thai food! I order the Pad See Eiw a majority of the time and believe me when I say they are FAST. I hang up and they're nearly at my door. The food is always hot, they are the nicest people (the woman knows my name and address by heart a la Sex and the City complete with a giggle) and the noodle dishes are a lot less greasy than other Thai places.
I'm a devout Joy's fanatic but when I need some hot delicious Thai in my belly PRONTO, I order here. Tres reasonable too. $7-8 for an entree. Yippee.
I usually order Thai from Spoon on Western but recently have been disappointed. So I decided to try someplace new and came across Snow Spice on http://GrubHub.com. I think this will be my new place to order from now on.
The delivery was just slightly over an hour (I did order through GrubHub online, so I might try calling next time) but was still hot enough when it arrived.
The Crab Rangoon were amazing, just the right amounts of creamy filling and crispy wonton. The egg rolls we received with our coupon were sort of mini egg rolls, and had a very light "shell". I think veggie only. Nothing to write home about but I wouldn't say no to another try either.
I also ordered the Panang Curry which had a good amount of white meat chicken and bell peppers. According to my taste buds, it was spicy enough to be noticed without taking away the ability to taste or leaving your tongue numb.
All in all, I'm really excited to find a good Thai place that delivers to me!
Side note: if you order online from GrubHub, they have a number of coupon options depending on the amount you order.
Ordered for the first time tonight through GrubHub. Yummy!
Crab Rangoon - ***** Good stuff and a sweet chili sour sauce, yummy.
Papaya Salad - ***** First time, delicious!
Pad Thai - **** One of the better Pad Thai's I've had.
Egg Rolls - *** They were free with my order over $15, not bad.
This food was really good! We ordered it on grubhub, so we got an order of free pot stickers (with $15 purchase), which is always good. Â The dishes were spicy, but still flavorful. The potstickers were ok...I don't know if I'd get them if they weren't free. Portions were good, food was hot when it arrived...overall a great dinner!
Review Source:I found this place on GrubHub and it's my go-to for Thai delivery.
You know those nights where you're too tired to cook, and too impatient to wait for someone to deliver food that says they'll be there in 30 minutes but really it's more like an hour, or more?
Snow Spice isn't one of those places. Â It's always super speedy, and the food is pretty good. Â I love the crab rangoon, it shows up crispy and never soggy and the sweet and sour dipping sauce is yum. Â I've only ever gotten delivery from here, but I anticipate the day when I can actually eat the in joint itself. Â If the delivery is top notch, I can only hope that in house service is just as tasty.
I got this stuff for delivery, and it came in 30 minutes on a Monday at 7pm. Â It was pretty good I had the panang curry extra spicy and it met my expectations. Â The crab rangoons were extra crispy which is nice. Â Since I got this delivered I can not speak for the restaurant. Â But if you are looking for cheap average Thai cuisine this place is all right. Â The bonus is if you order through grubhub they give you free pot stickers if your order is over $15.
If you are looking for avearage cheap thai cuisine this place is worth trying.
I love this place. Â I too was bummed when Thai NIppon closed. Â I work next door and it was the closest Thai place and the place to go once a week for lunch. Â SoOoo when Snow Spice opened I was skeptical but brave, and was one of the first of my co-workers to try it. Â
I usually get the Pad Woonsen because it never disappoints. Sometimes it's a little too "greasy" but it's still always very good. I always have them make it extra spicy, and the owner lady knows me so well she always puts in 2 extra hot sauce containers for me and always gives me chopsticks. Whenever I've felt adventurous and gotten a diff entree it's always been yummy. I was never brave enough to try the Mexican food in this place, and they've recently taken down that extra menu. Good decision! And now they have this special that if you dine in you buy one entree and you get the second free!! Where can you get that in Chicago?!!? Â
Super nice lady that owns Snow Spice, I heart you, your establishment, and your hispanic cook. Â -=)
So far I like it. Â A very tiny little place, and they seem to be branching out their menu with Mexican items, which I'm sure not many people try. Â Who goes to a Thai place for a burrito?
My order for papaya salad was delicious! Â Probably the best I've had in the city, and I've been ordering it for the past three years or more. Â It was spicy, filled with peanuts and green beans, and had some cabbage in it as well.
The Crazy noodle was also very spicy. Â You know how some places put that little chili pepper graphic next to certain items? Â It indicates spiciness, but how spicy is always a gamble. Â Usually, I say "SPICY!" when they ask me how hot I want my dish, and it always comes out just medium hot. Â But not Snow Spice! Â Oh, Lord, get yourself some Zantac 150 and a giant glass of milk. Â
The Pad Thai is OK, but I'm not even a fan of the good stuff I guess. Â
If you order more than 15 dollars worth of food, make sure and get the free eggrolls. Â They are vegetarian I believe, and are very good.
My boyfriend and I ordered delivery from here because we were both starving and too lazy to cook. I was really craving something from Thai Oscar, but it was Sunday and they don't open until 4pm. We found this place on http://grubhub.com and saw that this place was open and delivered for lunch so we gave it a shot.
The food didn't take a long time to arrive, which was nice... and the man who delivered it was very friendly! However, after looking at the food.. I could already tell that it wasn't going to be as good as the other thai restaurants in the area.
After ordering three different entrees (we wanted to taste a lil bit each.. don't call us fattys!) we could see that these dishes were just noodles and veggies... (mostly broccoli). Where are the sauces that give each dish a distinctive taste? Where were the spices? They were too plain. Even the appetizer, crab rangoon, was plain cream cheese inside a fried wrap. Nothing else. I mean.. I could do that.
However, the prices were really cheap.. so I guess you get what you pay for. Next time I think I'll wait until thai oscar opens to get some more tasty thai food.
I was crushed when Thai Nippon closed "for remodeling" but Snow Spice has not let me down. Â I've been there about a half-dozen times since they're re-opened, and my review is the same as it was for Thai Nippon: always delicious and reasonably priced. Â Literally everything I have tried there has been great (though I've never tried their sushi).
edit to add: Â While it's still a pretty small place, since they've taken out the sushi bar there is a lot more room for customers who want to eat in.
Located in the building which used to be 'Thai Nippon,' Snow Spice is the seemingly revamped and overhauled version of it's former self. Â I watched the small little restaurant open and couldn't wait to give it a try. Â I was a bit afraid that another Thai restaurant would open within a few blocks from three of Chicago's best (Roseded, Spoon, Opart). Â Nonetheless, I was very impressed with the meal. Â
To start, I noticed they served bubble teas and swung in with my girlfriend to check it out. The teas were well priced and of excellent quality. I had lychee fruit and she had strawberry. Both fresh and delicious. We grabbed a menu and ordered take-out a few days later. The menu is extensive, offering everything from salads to noodles to curries. We started with the spring rolls and some pot stickers. The pot stickers were very nice, crispy and delicious. As for the spring rolls, they were heavenly. Made with a sort of firm rice paper (which actually resembled paper), they were stuffed with firm tofu and a variety of vegetables. They came with a nice little plum sauce and melted in your mouth. For an entree I had the Crazy Spice Noodle. It was really nice, not too greasy with a good amount of heat and very well prepared vegetables. Â
The restaurant itself is small, cozy and bright and would make for a nice intimate dining experience. Â The owner is extremely friendly and the service was super fast. Â I will definitely go back. Â It's a welcome addition to a neighborhood with so many good Thai restaurants and is definitely as good as the rest of 'em. Â I just hope that more people break out of their comfort zone and give them a try.
