Its on the better side of burgers. Not as great as Five Guys or Zinburger but better than fast food or diner places. The food overall is good, however the cooks don't know how to follow ticket instructions. I guess they think since the toppings are free I'll give them all to you. And it happens every single time.
Review Source:I love this place. My favorite thing is the Stony's Chicken Sandwich. It's so amazing. If you like chicken, and you like sweet tangy flavors, that's the way to go.
The lobster roll is great too, but you can only get that in the summer.
This place is a local favorite, and it is for good reason.
I really enjoy Stony's especially on Wednesdays when it's buy 1 get 1 free for Seton Hall students - I get 2 sandwiches for like $7 or something. Their menu is always expanding and it's nice that there's a casual place around South Orange where you can sit outside. I believe they even have live music sometimes.
My usual is the Stony's Marinated Chicken Sandwich with the red onion & Japanese mayo (except I order it with no pineapple or tomato). I also get Sweet Potato Fries. They may have changed them up recently, as usually they are kinda soft and mushy, but last time I had them they were really crispy... even somewhat on the burnt side. ... I don't care because I love sweet potato fries either way and not many places around S.O. offer them.
I've always wanted to try their seafood, and since my last visit I've put the milkshakes on my 'To Try' list as well.
Ok, ok, I am amending my ways. Stony's has grown on me. Their patio seating and fish burgers and tacos make me feel like I'm back in SoCal....I like feeling nostalgic.
Ice cold lemonade or chocolate shake on a hot day, patio seating, a nice live band, and a light summer lunch-really hits the spot!
We got breakfast from here two days in a row so I can only comment on that, but have to say it was the best breakfast spot in the area by far. I went with the breakfast burrito both days and it was filling and delicious. They give you a few choices of what you want in it so that helps in customizing it to your tastes. The outdoor patio in the back is a nice place to sit, relax and enjoy your meal at your own pace when the weather is nice. The indoor area isn't too big so I'm guessing if the weather isn't cooperating it might not be the best atmosphere. The food is good, but the 'fast-food' order it at the counter-style does throw you off a bit. It's in a good spot and they do breakfast right so we'll definitely be back and most likely try some other meals there too.
Review Source:Love Stony's. Some of the best times I had last summer were sitting outside, eating a veggie burger, and enjoying the summer heat at Stony's!
The veggie burger is really out of this world. If you like veggie burgers that are TRULY vegetables and not soy-based meat-wannabe's then you'll love the burger here. Comes with a great bun, your choice of cheese & toppings. I normally get mine with swiss, cherry peppers, lettuce, tomato, onion and bbq sauce. But, I'm crazy, so get what you like.
Their shakes are good, they're not super fresh. The make them with milk, ice cream and flavored syrup. I like mine the REAL way with REAL fruit, etc. But, for what it is, it's good. The fries are also just "ok" but, people go there for the burgers, not the fries.
Everyone is friendly and it really is a great place for a quick bite, the prices are reasonable. For my bf's burger, my veggie burger, fries and 2 shakes it was a little over 20 bucks. That's really not a bad deal in my book.
When I walked in I was ready to like the place: independent, with a good selection of fast food items at reasonable prices. Just what a good, local burger joint looks like.
Unfortunately the food turned this predisposition to disappointment. The "bomber burgers" took a while to come up. One taste showed why - they were cooked to dry, tasteless oblivion. Why? My wait could have been a few minutes less AND my burger much better if it had been grilled less enthusiastically. The bun and toppings were so right. Why ruin the meat? I was part of a party of three, all having burgers. All arrived as if the cook had been instructed not to leave even the slightest hint of pink in the meat. They could have at least asked whether we preferred our burgers somewhere between well and overdone. Because we would have requested otherwise. What we got were should-have-been-good-burgers cooked into meh-at-best-burgers. No reason for that.
I don't even mind that the fries are frozen. They could do better, but the fries don't suffer too much for it. They were much better than the burgers.
Doubt I'll be back, but if I were a local I'd have a talk with them about their burgers. They could easily do better, and there's no reason why they don't.
The food at Stony's is nothing mind-blowing but it's very solid and I do return here probably about once every month or two...so if you're looking for a burger, chicken sandwich, etc., hit this place up.
The reason for only three stars is that everything else just feels off. Â There's no service to speak of, and things tend to move at a leisurely pace. I always find myself thirsty since they keep the drinks behind the counter (and without a server for refills)...this is a big turn-off for me with salty food...if I want to refill my drink 1 or 2 times I should be able to do it for free and without having to walk back to the ordering counter to ask for a refill. The place seems to have a hoighty-toighty attitude for what it is and a bit overpriced.
Stony's is a great neighborhood place. Fish tacos are yummy and are perfect with a side of sweet potato fries. Â The patio is a very chill place to sit and eat on a mild evening (when you can get a table...that's the sign of a good eatery, i suppose!) byob and enjoy live music during the "peak season". Â Fast service and friendly staff! Â Hope you enjoy it, too!
Review Source:Eh. It wasn't bad... it just wasn't particularly good, either. I had a burger since I figured it would probably be the best thing they had, and it wasn't bad... it just wasn't that good either.
But if you're looking for food that's not bad, with pretty good prices, this is your place.
I Really wanted to love this place its Cute and has a nice Location ,but Dissapointing burgers for a burger joint and the weak service  are not a good combo especailly when better options are close by ....My son went in the other day and thought that the place was dirty and for 14 year old boy thats saying alot ,,,,
Review Source:I like this place. Â Recently stopped in for a veggie burger and a chocolate milk shake. Â They have nice outdoor seating in the back and prices are good. Â The veggie burger was falafel-like in that it had that fried outer layer. Â It was quite tasty. Â Ambiance could be better. Â There's artwork on the walls but it still feels sparse. Â It also feels a little dingy inside; the place could use a good mop and shine. Â You also can potentially wait awhile to get your food. Â But that being said it's convenient (right across from the train station), and if you don't go at a peak time, I imagine you would get your food more quickly.
Review Source:This is a result of 4 separate visits.I have no complaints.....outstanding service, best in buns, amazing sweet potato fries ,home grown tasting tomatoes, wonderful beef ,friendly service. I admit I tend to go off-peak hours ,but I like to eat a little earlier than most .Only complaint is difficulty in finding parking in the area. Better than 5 guys because it's broiled, so less fatty ,and better quality meat.
Review Source:Well I love the place as I take the family and become weekly regulars easily once /twice a week minimum. As stated it is truly a great and needed addition to South Orange. They have great burgers but I am into the chicken sandwiches which are great and do not leave you feeling bloated. My wife loves the fish that is now cooked outdoors and they always cook it very well.
The outdoor location is awesome especially the sand dunes themes is really neat. The outdoor music acts are all first rate and the staff is pretty much attentive. It would be nice to just have the meal delivered and not have to stay alert waiting for your number to be called, as that is always disturbing the mood.
One thing I can say if you have a problem, Stoney is there and will listen and address your problem or request if at all possible.
All in all great outdoor sitting area, good basic food and love the fries.
The burgers are delicious, the sweet potato fries even more so but I specifically signed up just to rave about the "fish shack" out back. My boyfriend and I went there for dinner on Saturday (looks like we just missed some live music, bummer) and it was aaaamazing. We both had the fish tacos and split an order of grilled clams and a side of asparagus. The fish tacos were some of the best I've ever had, great flavor and great sauce, the clams were garlicky, HUGE and fresh, the asparagus was only so-so (only 3 stalks and cold). I know this place has changed hands many a time but I'm really praying this place sticks around, at least for the summer.
Review Source:A great place for a quick lunch or dinner, I love the Stony's salad (w/ chicken) and the sweet potato fries!
My kids like the burgers and the milk shakes. Â They deliver (major PLUS :) during the evening hours and they even pack the milkshakes separate from the hot food - love that attention to detail!
Enjoy!
First rate burgers, perhaps the best in the area. Very basic, and if you are looking for spicy or unique flavors, this isn't the place. But it is the place for a great burger, with a great bun. Fries and sweet potato fries are quite good....shakes are incredible. Would love to see them add some better sides, plus some legumes, like beans, green beans, or a top-notch salad. That said, the restaurant doesn't promise more than it delivers, and it is a great addition to the South Orange community.
Review Source:The burgers, which come in single and double patty versions like Five Guys, are very lean but bland. Like Five Guys, you can add as many toppings as you'd like for free but don't be surprised if they forget to give you what you requested -- they left out our tomatoes -- and the assembly is sloppy. We got a large order of fries which was a mistake because they  tasted like the frozen crinkle cut variety and very oily.
The fountain that was left behind when the place was Terrance Allen is still there and looks like no one has cleaned it in ages as the glass was streaked and the whole thing exuded a mildewy smell that was unpleasant to sit next to.
Pretty good place for burgers and fries. They also have hot dogs, milkshakes and some other stuff. They keep the menu short and simple.
This place is pretty much a Five Guys burger joint ripoff. The burgers come in 2 sizes, 1patty or 2 patties. Variety of toppings free of charge. The exception is that they don't go crazy with the amount of fries they give you like Five Guys does. I had the sweet potato fries and it was DELICIOUS! I would go back just to eat those fries again.
I ordered 2 bacon cheeseburgers (1-single patty, 1-double patty), large sweet potato fries, and a large vanilla milkshake for 2 people. The bill was just shy of $20. Good place to grab a bite before heading over to the SOPAC movie theatres.
All in all, they had good burgers and fries and I would return. I think they also deliver but only during certain time slots.
