very terrible place, I met the owner and had a brief talk with her about the way she ran her stores. She has two locations, one in Ravensworth and another one in Burke. The stores are not good quality, they sell cookies that you can get at giant for the same price and better quality! the coffee is horrible! I am never going to come back to this place and i advise all who are thinking of going to think again and spend your buck elsewhere.

Excellent for breakfast and lunch, and they have lots of great Swiss and German products on hand. The seating is limited, and it's often very busy. They do bring your order over to your seat rather than needing to wait for it at the window. They also make beautiful cakes and a variety of other pastries and baked goods.

My daughter ordered a black & white for her daughters birthday.  There was no chocolate flavor in the "black" portion, which was brown, and no cake flavor in the white part.  It was all a bit dry.  The icing was similarly devoid of flavor.  If you but a cake here, take a photo and then throw away the cake.  Maybe I'm spoiled because my wife, who does not bake for a living, can throw together a better cake in an hour and a half.

I ordered my wedding cake from this bakery, I could not have been happier with the result. They listened to my needs and the final product was utterly beautiful. The only way to understand is to see the picture of this beautiful cake. But the taste was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Thanks Swiss Bakery.

I was expecting a lot more from this place.

I was eying the strudels and asked the waitress behind the counter for a recommendation of her favorite.  She had none.  This left me discouraged as I hope to see small shops like these have a staff who know and enjoy the products they serve.  I decided on apple.

Based on the apple strudel and iced coffee I had, I felt like this place was ordinary. The pastry was on the drier side and tasted like it had been sitting out too long.  It didn't have that light flaky quality I like in my strudels.

The decor of the shop itself was nice and had a large assortment of items to choose from.

I may need to try other items to give a more extensive review, but from what I've tried, I'm not encouraged to.

This place is wonderful!  I called Thursday morning to ask if they had cakes in stock or if I had to order ahead of time for my husband's birthday.  The young lady who answered the phone was really nice and told me that they could set aside a cake for me to pick up that evening after work.  She recommended a 6" cake because it was just the two of us, and even listed off the different flavors for me.  I picked a mocha cake, which was a white mocha, not the chocolate mocha that I would have expected, but the lady on the phone made sure to let me know when I ordered it that it was a white mocha cake.  She took my payment over the phone, and all I had to do was pick it up after work.  Everything was perfect, and here's the kicker: I ride a scooter, and the cake made it all the way home in the trunk of my scooter in perfect condition!  It NEVER slipped.  Okay, so now I'm impressed.  The cake looks awesome, the bakery was filled with delicious-looking treats, and when we actually cut into it, holy cow.  Delicious.  It was super light and sooooo tasty!  The mocha flavor really came through brilliantly, without losing the chocolate accents.  YUM!!!  I only wish they had warned me it was going to be this good.....I would have ignored the recommendation to only get a 6" cake.  (But it's better for my New Year's Resolution this way.)  I will definitely come back here for the next birthday in my life- or maybe for any reason.  Or no reason.  Wow.

LOVE this bakery! Purchased a chocolate cake here for my hubby's birthday several years ago (he is very picky about his cakes/cookies/etc). He now requests cake from Swiss Bakery every year. We love it and with it close by, we often go here for desserts whenever going to a friend's house for dinner. THe Napoleans are fabulous and the sugar cookies for kids are even great for adults!

The Swiss Bakery is set up very much on the model of a European market cafe. Breakfast and lunch are served until 2:00 p.m (3:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday), but the bakery and market hours are longer.

Well, I had to have Wurst! I ordered an Oktoberfest special, choice of Wurst and two sides. I had a Bratwurst with Sauerkraut and German Potato Salad and added a second Wurst (Knackwurst) for $4. On a previous visit I had a regular Bratwurst that included a roll, with German Potato Salad, and mustard. Very good! Other hot and cold dishes are also served as well as soups and salads and seasonal specials.

The Swiss Bakery has a market area with cheese, wine, beer, and chocolate imported from Switzerland, Germany, and Austria. There are also German-style meats produced in the Mid-Atlantic region. It is a bakery, as the name implies, with many confections and pastries on display.

The only downside is that orders tend to come out slowly.

    We'll be back here!

I'm not too much a fan of their cakes (a little dry in my opinion) but the pastries are to die for.  We also really like their semolina bread.  It doesn't always seem to be available, but we are sure to get it when it is.

These people know what they are doing.  First they serve a great cup of coffee followed by a cooked to order breakfast that revolved around a potato pancake almost too big to finish. But all this pales in comparison the pastry.  I had a simple cheese danish and took a peach raspberry tart today.  Great balance of sweetness to acid in the fruit tart.  Yum!!  The staff is well trained, heads up and gets you what you need quickly.   Very good breads and savory treats too.

The Swiss Bakery creates its special occasion cakes at the Springfield location. We worked closely with Lauren on the design of the gender-reveal cake for our baby shower and they did an amazing job. It was almost sad to cut into it. What artists! The cake itself was moist and light, the filling was not too sweet, the cream under the fondant was not too heavy - just right. Their pricing isn't inexpensive and I do wish they offered more flavors for the cake itself, but we worked together to find a way of making my ideas work with their processes so everything worked out. Gorgeous work!

    Another hit, thanks to Yelp!

While out running errands, the husband and I decided we needed coffee.  I have become increasingly more reliant on Yelp to guide me in the right direction so I pulled out my phone and was guided here for a very pleasing experience.

The inside is bright and pleasing with a little shop area selling wine, beer, and European sweets and groceries.  We browsed a little and then wandered over to look at the menu, despite neither of us being super hungry.  We wound up getting the tomato and mozzarella sandwich and the much-heralded pretzel.  The sandwich was  quite good -- nice big slabs of tomato and cheese with basil aioli and olive spread.  The pretzel (or more accurately, the Obatzda) was the star, though.  The pretzel itself was perfect, warm and tender and obviously boiled in salted water instead of just piling on coarse salt as an afterthought.  The little mustards were nice; I liked having the sweet and traditional both as options.  But hte Obatzda!  OMG!  I've never had it before so can't comment on authenticity, but I can say it was freakin' delicious.  It's a spread made with Brie, onions and paprika and was totally delicious.  We'd come back for that alone.  (Though now I'm dying to try their bratwurst.)

We did get our coffee though it was only so-so.  My brewed cup was weak and my husband's espresso pull was too long.  Tastes like they use mediocre beans, too,  but I admit we're a bit of coffee snobs.

The selection of pastries and cookies was tempting, but we opted instead for a little cup of the blood orange pomegranate sorbet.  Words cannot describe the fabulousness.  I think I need a moment to think fondly on it. .......  AH!  SO DAMN YUMMY!!  I'm very, very glad we live close enough to bring home a pint of this next time we're out and about.  Because, oh yes, we'll be back.

Amazing. I studied abroad in Switzerland in undergrad and it is so great to find a place with raclette, German beers, and good French pastries. It can be pricey; I usually go when they have a coupon on Specialicious. The Bavarian pretzel sandwich with Gruyere cheese and good German meat is to die for. Their ice creams and pastries really are delicious. It's the attention to detail and focus on quality food that gets this place a five-star rating.

    Two words: Bavarian pretzel.

Yes, we tried several pastries and they were all lovely and very European -- delicate and not overly sweet, just as others have mentioned, but the lowly pretzel is what sticks in my mind.  The tender dough with the slightest hint of sweetness contrasted perfectly with the lightly salted exterior.  None of us could stop eating it.  Next time I'm in the area I plan to head back just for that, and may even bring some back on the plane with me.

The service here is always friendly and super helpful.  I've only come in to purchase a few of their baked goods but I thought I would write that I recently got the French Fruit 6" cake from here and it is quite heavenly.  Oh so fluffy!

I've always wanted to try something from their cafe menu.  They serve breakfast from the cafe menu M-R 7am- 2pm and lunch 11am- 2pm.  On F/Sa breakfast is 7am-3pm and lunch 11am-3pm.  Next time, I'm planning to try the bratwurst or chicken panini.

Like European style baked goods? This is the best place to go. My wife had spent time in Germany over the past few years and as far as I know, this is the best match to our experiences with German and Swiss bakeries. They have authentic lunches too...ham and cheese on a laugen roll.

This place tries to be too much!! Bakery, wine shop, ice cream, and other little grocery items

I've only experienced the cookies which honestly weren't anything spectacular. They reminded me of those generic cookies you find sold in the tin cans around the holidays. They don't have me running back for more.

The cakes here on the other hand looked amazing and I'd be totally willing to come back if I were looking to buy some pastries or cakes for a party. They also have a big assortment of ice cream on hand.

Although I like their grocery selection, their breakfast pastries and their fondant cookies, I am not too impressed by their overpriced refrigerated pastry selection.

Every time I get a pastry that's in the refrigerator, it's cold and frozen.  The last time I got their Napoleon, the cream/custard was rock hard and I had to whack it with a spoon.  Even then, it didn't taste good at all.

Their creme brulee (also a refrigerated pastry) looks absolutely disgusting.  I don't think they caramelize the sugar on top with the torch because the sugar doesn't look browned at all (which you know, is why it's called creme brulee.  Bruler is French for "to burn")  The others creme brulees in there were watery from the condensation.  Yuck and yikes.

I know they don't make those pastries fresh every single day (my friend used to work here and told me about their inventory system), but still, at least they could pretend like they did to make my mind feel at ease.

If I'm going to get a French pastry like the Napoleon or creme brulee, I'd much rather get it at a place like La Madeleine, a chain restaurant.  No, they probably don't make theirs fresh either, and they probably don't even have a pastry chef, but at least it looks and tastes decent and you don't feel too bad about handing over that much money for, let's be honest, crappy pastry.

Other pastry shops I recommend are Pastries by Randolph which is in Arlington and Pastry Xpo in Merrifield.

I just can't go there often... I buy too much, I eat too much... Addictive.

Pastries (croissants, danishes, eclairs, you name it) are really good, ice cream- depends on the flavor. Cakes... Haven't found one really good yet. Too sweet and often fatty for my taste. Not very European, more American, in my opinion.
Haribos are made for Americans too (made in Turkey :)), to my disappointment (and yes, there is difference between German and American ones. Even the colors differ). Breads are good, but very small and expensive. I go with Whole Foods breads instead.

I say buy the pastries in bulk, skip most of the other stuff.

know what you're walking into and you won't be sad you went....you might be sad about the weight you put on after wards but that's for another website!

It's a store, it's a bakery, it's a coffee shop, it's cake shop and it's gotta a little of everything but the 'everything' they have is spot on!

It's authentic and so clean and fresh inside.
There are a few spots to sit and chat/eat/drink and a few tables/chairs outside.

    I love this place!

Good ice cream and sorbet.  The pear sorbet is incredible.

The wife and I wanted to see how many samples we could get for free before the clerk started to get a little annoyed (the answer would be "eleven-teen" for those of you playing at home).  Anything more than one customer in the shop and the staff gets very nervous and stressed

My wife and I went there Friday night to the Springfield location and was surprised on how empty it was.  I had really high hopes of this place but right now can't give it more stars.  We ordered the creme brulee, a tiramisu and coffee.

The tiramisu was good but I thought that the dark chocolate shavings on the top was too strong.  I also could not get the cellophane wrapper off the dessert so eating it was kind of difficult.  My wife though that the creme brulee was OK, but we both agreed that Grounded had a better version.  The coffee was really weak and had no flavor.

While the place was very clean it needs more atmosphere.  I wanted to feel like I was in Switzerland, but it's quite not there yet.

[cue fog machine and saxophone music]

...and as I emerged through the grit and rubble of the dark city streets, a fair-haired angel walked in to my life.  Her ruby lips parted, and spoke their sweet melodies to my tired and weary soul.

"Would you like to try our homemade ice cream", she asked.  Would you like to try our homemade ice cream.  That was the nicest thing anyone said to me all day.

Her eyes flashed like heat lightening, and her apron pulled tight against the soft curves of her silhouette.  I drank her in like a tall glass of iced tea on a hot summer night, and flipped three crisp bills on the counter.  I met her gaze, and loosened my necktie.

"Yeah", I said.  "I'll try your ice cream."

I was able to take my eyes off my angel just long enough to see the menu board.  Decisions decisions...I sorta felt like Chocolate, but the Cinnamon sounded good, too.

My angel tossed her hair and I watched the cascade fall softly below her shoulders.

"Let me ask you something," I said.  She leaned over the counter, and rested on her elbows.  Her skin looked silky smooth, and her hair smelled like honeysuckle.  "If you were an ice cream, Angel, would you be Chocolate...or would you be Cinnamon?"

Her lips curled into a smile and she gave me a wink.  "Well, if I was an ice cream, Stranger, I guess I could be whatever you wanted...from the warm cinnamon of a country kitchen to the milky chocolate of your favorite dreams."  She lightly bit her lower lip and batted her long eye lashes.

I had to admit I believed she could be any ice cream I wanted, and that chocolate sounded pretty damn good to a guy a like me.  "Yeah...I'll take the chocolate."

She gripped the scoop in her soft hands and glided to the dairy case.  I watched her handy work through the glass, as she swirled the scoop through the cold ice cream.  Her warm breath formed puffy white clouds over the mounds of frozen cream and sugar.  Our hands grazed as she passed the cone over the counter.

    "Two ninety-nine", she whispered.

I glanced at the bills on the counter.  "Keep the change", I said, and turned toward the door.

    "Good night, Stranger", she called.

I turned and met her gaze.  "Good night, Angel.  I'll be around."  She smiled, and I turned back toward the hot streets of the city.

5 stars - Really good ice cream, and so many delicious baked goods on display.  I'll definitely be back.

FINALLY  a fruit tart that is as good as it is in France or Switzerland.  Expensive, but I'm willing to pay for that!  The baguette was quite good as well.  I tried out a pint of their homemade sorbet, the green apple.  I must say I'm a sorbet connoisseur, so I was excited about a new flavor... but this one fell a bit short of my expectations.  The flavor is there, its great... but the texture is a bit odd.  It's like a cold mushy apple, but not like applesauce.  It's very strange, not terrible... but not worth the 5.75/pint.  This is a trip down 495 for me, so it'll take a special reason to come back, but that's not saying I won't.  FYI There is a $10 minimum to use your credit card.

When did this place open, and why didn't I realize until now that it exists?

Instead of birthday cake for a recent bday, I got several of the mini desserts/tarts.  We got the chocolate raspberry cake, carrot cake, lemon roll cake, a fruit tart, and an apple tart thing.  The lemon roll cake was my favorite; it had this nice and tart lemon curd.

I'll have to check out the gelato and the other ice creams they have next time I go, which will probably be, like, tomorrow.

    ==========================
I've been back several times now.  I can't tell which desserts are the usuals and which are on rotation, but they're very good.

We tried their white peach champagne sorbet.  A little icey, but very good.

I also really like their breads.  I can't remember the bread names, but the Vienna? or whichever one it is that looks kind of like French bread is nice and crusty outside, pillowy softness inside.  They have a sheet that lets you know which breads are being baked on which day of the week.

OMG! I am in love. Based on  Mary S's review, the kids and I tried this place out today. I repeat- OMG!  We left w/ creme brulees, crispies, biscottis, and fruit tarts. Did I mention cookies? We probably bought more cookies than we can eat in a reasonable time- but what the hell!  Raspberry fingerprints, german shortbread, lemon poppy seeds, chocolate layered square things, chocolate pyramid things- cookies by the pound.  The kid love me for this "discovery", my thighs will be hating me, and I am on such a sugar buzz right now that I probably shouldn't be allowed to drive- or be out in public. Would another OMG be tediously redundant? Oh well- I love this place.

I have been to both locations of this little treasure.  The baking is all done in the Ravensworth location after their expansion, so you get the same quality at both places.  There is a window where you can actually watch the pastry chefs at their craft.  I actually watched my fruit tart being created.

I have had their breads, pastries, and assorted tarts and have ordered cakes for special dinners.  All were fantastic and tasted great.  But the cookies...............I am totally addicted.  They usually have several varieties to choose from.  The Ameretti are out of this world-especially when they are fresh out of the oven and soft and chewy-heaven.  In addition to the chocolate chip, peanut butter cookies (which are all wonderful), they have several Swiss cookies which are indicated by a little Swiss flag sticker.  These are all worth trying.  I can't remember all the names, but they are all good. There is a square cookie that is made of a stack of slivered almonds, held together by honey or sugar that is delicious too.

The Ravensworth has a little seating area where you can eat your pastry -or whatever you have bought, drink your coffee and peruse all the fun and interesting products they have for sale on the shelves.  They have European/Swiss candies, jams, jellies, coffees and in the refrigerated case, they have deli type meats, yogurts and cheese.  They have an ice cream case with delicious ice cream and sorbets-try the Coconut-yum-0!  Like I said-you get the same quality at both locations, and as of this writing, they are re-doing the Burke store as well.  It is open for business during the rennovation.

My cousin (who lives in SField) usually has a dessert from the Swiss Bakery when we have dinner with her.

Last time, it was chocolate and creme--anyway, I licked the box.

The icing and creme filling were the best I've had.

Seriously, nothing artificial.  No mysterious ingredients, no off flavors.

    Just Delicious.

She tells me that THIS is the spot if you are a gingerbread house nut.  Apparently they get crazy during the holidays with deliciously detailed (read lots of icing and candy) houses that you can bring home to yours.

I love that they are a green retailer.  Yelp! code writers--we should denote this with a special icon or something on yelp to say "thanks" for taking care of our planet.

Thank you for writing such a thorough review Allen D!  I can tell you're a committed advocate for them.  And I'll go back for strudel this weekend!
