This is my go to place whenever I am in a compromised situation at 1am and really want food. This obviously is not the greatest Mexican restaurant in the world but it is always there, always delicious and always cheap. The staff there are great and I enjoy honing my spanish with them and they will help you find the right words if you are a bit rusty. This is definitely a drunken go to that will never disappoint, nor will the crowd around you in the early morning hours
Review Source:Catching up with a friend after work and he offers up Taco & Burrito House as a meeting spot. I had eaten a rather hefty supper and only had room for somthing light. And what was my definition of light?
Chips and guacamole.
Holy moley! Taco & Burrito House is already a hole in the wall and you always get the best food at holes in the wall. I swear the chips were warm. And you don't pour chips from a bag and heat them up. As to the guacamole, all you big box restaurants that make guacamole, you need to take lessons from Taco & Burrito House. So, the chips and guacamole were good enough. I will have to return and try some more comida de Mexico de Taco & Burrito House.
I gotta parrot the sentiment that this place has the WORST delivery service in Lakeview.
This hurts me to even write. I'm not a disgruntled first-time consumer. I'm a loyalist. I proudly flew my Taco & Burrito House flag. This was my recommendation for drunken late-night. This was my recommendation for a quick lunch. Taco & Burrito House was, in fact, "my jam." So much was this place my jam, that I was willing to overlook the uneven delivery times. I was willing to overlook the delivery drivers inability to ever use my buzzer (cell phone minutes ain't free, homey). I was even willing to overlook the sorta cold delivered food and the congealed cheese. But what I cannot overlook is blatantly rude and disrespectful behavior.
The driver forgot my sodas and, upon returning with more, BERATED me and called me a liar. This dude literally accused me of trying to steal. I was livid. He almost made me act outside of my Christian upbringing. Instead, I told him where he could shove his Cokes and shut the door in his face.
So congratulations, Taco and Burrito House. You've just lost my business and the business of those I regularly bring to your establishment over what comes out to about less than .75 cent in merchandise.
Had I written a review after my first visits to this restaurant, it would have easily received a 4-star rating for delicious food, prepared in a timely manner, with stellar customer service. But I didn't. My third visit was my first 'late-night' trek there and it was absolutely awful. The sign clearly says open until 2am, but when I arrived shortly after midnight the staff had more or less packed it up for the day. The cashiers attitude was deplorable. Instead of asking if my meal would be eat-in or carry-out he says, 'This gonna be to-go right.' They refused to serve me french fries because they had decided to clean the deep fryers early. And when I finally received what was supposed to be a fish burrito, I opened my to-go bag to find all the ingredients for a fish burrito, minus a tortilla. I did not pay $10 to receive a taco salad. I will probably never patronize this place again.
Review Source:Please PLEASE listen to me.
I once stored my keg (for the parade the next day) in the basement they share with the 2 establishments that share the building with them, whom I am friends with. Â They had big vats of cold, COOKED refried beans just sitting there, UNCOVERED and exposed to the elements down there. Â There was a sewage leak which drenched the cardboard boxes filled with tomatoes, avocados, and other vegetables, some rotting. Â Their basement was repulsive. Â I was told by the other businesses that this was not a one-time thing---THIS IS ALL THE TIME. Â
Now, we won't even get Horchata there. Â It's a shame because we lived directly across the street for 3 years, and had been going there for awhile. But when we saw their stored food fermenting in the basement, rotting in water seepage and sewage, we were SHOCKED. Â We have warned our friends and neighbors ever since. Â If you drunkenly head into this place to eat (as it is between 2 bars), and wonder why you're puking when you get home or have diarrhea the next day? Â It's because you ate bad, rotting, greasy fermenting slop. Â
I'm sorry for all of you that have eaten here, as I have. Â STOP, PLEASE!
Love their 2 taco with rice & beans lunch special. The price is right. The food is consistently fresh and flavorful. It's standard mexican fare-nothing unique. Portions are large enough to fill me up. Service is quick but I've only gone there for lunch in the late afternoon. There's never a wait. Â It's a small restaurant, nothing fancy. Just your typical hole in the wall Mexican joint. Â I'll keep going back.
Review Source:Live update (from a loyal customer)......
"Can I get a large size hot sauce please, one of these?" (holding up small cup as given ONCE before and ready to throw a $ in that ever present Chicago tip bowl shoved in your face). "But the green sauce is hotter", he says. Â "The red is fine", I reply (furthermore the green stuff is disgusting and gives me Montezumas revenge o.k.?). Â
Get home with........that disgusting, GREEN sauce. Â A whole container of it too! Â This place can't get an order right for a single order carry-out if their Chicago lazy a**'s depended on it. Â
Ask for ground beef, you'll get that chewy, undigestible "steak" crap (possibly even chicken). Â Request extra hot sauce with $2 thrown in the "bowl"......you won't get ANY! Â
Lazy Chicago cash collectors, right here! Â You deserve better for the housing prices you're paying here fancy "Lakeview East". Â Where I'm from, they appreciate our business.
I'm sorry I'm not going to learn your dialect to get what I paid for but here goes.......cinco in a row F-up!
I'll go here again and lean my ass over the counter to make sure they get it right - BEFORE paying!
Put 'em in their place. Â They're a stereotype of Chicago lazay. Â Those days are OVER "world class city". Â You have to earn that $$ (and tips). Â EARN!
Maybe they're selling something out the back door and the restaurant is a cover, that's all I can think of this place.
Steak fajita burrito.
It's fucking awesome. I fantasize about this thing and plan when next I should have one. I had 3 burritos for 3 days straight.. it's sooooo good with the tomatillo sauce. That's how much I love these things. I pre-gamed with the steak fajita burrito before a night of official drinking- that's how I do it, I pre-game with food cuz I'm fat like that and then? I'm ready to go!! Throw it up later?? AS IF! That beautiful burrito stays in! Â I'm not so crazy about the tortilla being grilled but whateves. The burritos are about average size, I always get the large- not abnormally large or any larger than other burritos out there so it's pretty easy to conquer it all in one sitting. It's very satisfying when coming home tipsy and serves as the perfect goodnight kiss I say. The carne asada nachos don't dissapoint either. Not incredible but pretty good and hefty with melty cheese sauce and half of an avocado sliced on top. I asked for no lettuce on mine. Lettuce- what a waste. I don't claim to know what's authentic as I don't think they really aim to be since they serve burgers here but it didn't offend my taste buds and stomach so I think we're good here. I hate being offended via my mouth. It pisses me off.
Another huge plus? there's no minimum for credit cards. Holla for a few dollars!
I just had lunch at Taco & Burrito House for $5.00! Â How? Â I went on to LivingSocial and check out the local Lakeview deals. Â You get Two tacos, rice, beans, and 12 ounce soda for only $5.00! Â Go to LivingSocial now, eat in the neighborhood and save some money too! Â My tacos ROCKED!
Review Source:As far as cheap Mexican food where you get what you pay for, this place is the epitome of mediocre Mexican restaurants. I think my favorite food I've ever gotten here was the breakfast burritos they have here. They are a fairly good size and made very quickly. They also have horchata and some sort of pomegranate drink.
I recommend the horchata, skip the pomegranate. They used to have a special for tamale's for $1 and they were a fantastic deal, but they've upped the price since then. Their nachos are also pretty good, they throw on a good amount of ground beef, guac, jalapenos, beans, and salsa.
They have burgers, fries, and some other "Classic" American foods, but something about getting a burger at a Mexican joint doesn't appeal to me.
Long story short, if you come here then get their breakfast burrito or any burrito, nachos, horchata, or tamales. Oh yeah, they also deliver.
One star is far to much credit. So lets just say, maybe the counter service would in essence be worth that. So I will allow it an assumed star.
This is the definition of horrendous delivery service. First of all, it took over an hour to receive the order. When the order was received the "cheese" was destroyed and coated EVERYTHING in the bag. The container for the nachos was reduced to a flattened pancake with crumbles of nachos within. Apparently they did not realize that styrofoam is a weak material and would not hold up well at the BOTTOM of all the other items.
To top it off, the "food" is abysmal. The greasy, cheese laden paper bag that housed the "food" would likely taste no different than the very material housed within. But I don't think I could have stomached tasting anything else from this delivery.
I will NEVER order from this place again. What a Joke.
long day at work, anxious to just get home, relax...but wait...what to do for dinner?? Â Walked by this place and decided some nachos sounded pretty good. Â I have walked by this place many times but never stopped in. Â I have to say I'm pretty satisfied with the nachos and the prices. Â The staff was very friendly, they prepared my food quickly, and the nachos tasted pretty darn good, and for the price, I got a lot of nachos.
I ordered the vegetarian nachos and they loaded it up with everything, there was sour cream, cheese, guacamole, tomatoes, onions, lettuce, jalapeno peppers. Â Cost me just a little over 5 bucks with tax.....not too bad. Â I definitly would come back to this place, and I'm looking forward to checking out some of their other items....burritos, tacos, tortas, quesadillas, enchiladas....lots to pick from.
Chain? Yup! A bajillion of these joints throughout the city? Si! Do I love them anyway? Si, si, SI!
I'm obsessed with their beef nacho supreme! Hellooo lotsa guacamole! For the first time today I tried the fajita burrito. Oh man! I can't decide if this is good or bad. The burrito was amazing! The bad part is it's so close to my apt and so not good for me. Love!
After a certain time of night, East Lakeview becomes a ghost town and there aren't many options for when you're buzzed, coming home from the clubs, hungry, and in need of anti-ralph insurance (come to think of it, anti-Ralph insurance would come in handy too; I keed, my Dominican doppelganger).
They're not doing anything too crazy here but they're not doing anything badly either -- which puts them above the rest of the nearby competition. Get the chicken burrito. The burritos are sorta grilled, so the tortilla is a little crispy. I like added texture to my food, so I enjoy that. If you like a softer tortilla, let the guys know. I also like to order sans sour cream and they're cool with that. You can get in and get out within a reasonable amount of time and even though these guys, undoubtedly, deal with way too many drunks to ever stay in a good mood, the customer service is good enough.
Final price at around $5. Belly full. Buzz quenched. ralphing abated. Success. You can definitely do worse. No, really. You can. I have. Come here for some (sorta) late(er) night Mex-eat-an.
Interesting little dive. Â Nothing fancy here. Â The pork burrito I had was happy diversion from your standard Mexican fare. Â Firstly, Â there is no rice, so if you're a carnivore you're going to love the extra meat. Â The meat is cooked on a flat top grill so there is a good sear to it and a flavorful bark with a little crunch. Â The seasoning is bold, but not overdone. Â In fact, I enjoyed it so much I didn't put any sauce on it at all. Â The tortilla is crisped on the flat top and there is a definite crunch without being overly dry. Â The moisture balance is definitely on the less sloppy side, but then it isn't loaded with runny refried beans or extra salsa. Â
It isn't mind blowing, but if you have craving for cheap tasty Mexican, but want something a little different, this is your place.
I was pretty excited to finally live near carry out mexican food that wasn't Chipotle. Nothing against Chipotle, of course, I like it, but it's not mexican food.
Anyways, I tried out this place. So far I've only tried the quesadilla and the nachos, but both were good, and very reasonable. The guys that work there are always friendly and get the orders right. I disagree that it's dirty. It's definitely not the most luxurious restaurant in the world (I wouldn't expect a taqueria to be?) but it's not dirty. It's just your typical light up board menu with a few tables, late night joint. And the food is good, that's what counts, right?
BLEECH. Â Must. Get. Intestines. Back. Into. Abdomen.
Nasty, gritty little dump. Â Icky table cleanliness. Â No restroom for customers to wash our hands in. Â You get what you pay for here, but the prices, service and speed can't be beat. Â I'll face it: I didn't eat here because of their reputation, but places like these seem to fester in the East Lakeview neighborhood. Â Literally, there's a dumpy Mexican food dive every other block. Â it's just that this might possibly be the worst.
I'm not going to rant for long. Â Suffice to say I thought my enchilada dinner was passable, and it's one of the few places that I might actually go back to once my colon calms down.
This place has a lot of things I like in a everyday, neighborhood burrito joint. Â
Its a hole-in-a-wall and does not aspire to be more. Â You can see your food being made in front of you and the guys cooking are super friendly. Â The older guy who is there half the time reminds me of an old Hawaiian guy I worked with in college. Â The prices are low and the take out bags feel heavy.
What I don't like is the food (at least most of it). Â
I gave this place a couple of chances. Â The nachos were soggy. Â The burritos were sloppy and falling apart and taste as poor as they looked (go across the street to Buena Vista for their mole burrito instead).
However, the fish tacos are great. Â
Only come here if you live within a 3 block radius (not worth more travel time). Â Get take out of 3 fish tacos (about $2 each). Â You will get double wrapped mixture of well seasoned tilapia, pico, and cilantro. Â Use the limes they give you and open a cold beer. Â You will be happy and full.
I lived in the neighborhood for two years before I ventured in here. I was afraid of it... afraid of... well, I don't really know.
Anyways, finally, one fateful day maybe a year or two ago, I tried the fish tacos and loved it. It was juicy, flavorful, and cheap! I do find that these can be hit or miss depending on who's making it (and even if it's the same guy making it).
It can be extra spicy, or too dry, or worse, lacking in cilantro/lime. However, I'm still a fan despite these setbacks.
Recently, I've branched out to other offerings: huevos rancheros, chorizo con papas, horchata, and the guac with chips. I'd say all are all right. I enjoy this horchata more than the one from down the street at Janitzio.
I looooove Mexican, and the rave reviews of this place made me want to give it a shot. First of all if you're going in there to eat, its not a sit down restaurant, its basically a watered down Chipotle.
I got the chicken burrito, which was ok, not that flavorful, the chicken was dry and crunchy, and the lack of rice in a burrito which I have been accustomed to was a let down. I also got a side of guacamole, who can resist avocado goodness, and was also a little let down. The flavor was lacking and it was very blended almost too creamy. Ill give it another shot if Im around, otherwise I suggest walking down the street to Chipotle.
Caution the portions here are huge and they pile on the toppings. Â I got the beef nachos with beans, cheese and guac and they were huge! Â Two people could have eaten these and still had leftovers. Â I also got a side of chips with guac. Â If anyone knows me they know I hate soggy chips so this was a necessary purchase. Â However, the chips here stay really crunchy through almost the whole meal. Â Also they gave little 'ole me a cup of guac and this cup was enough to feed a table of 5 or 6 people! Â Also their medium drink is huge, it's probably a large at most other restaurants.
Oh yeah and it's CHEAP! Â Let me say that again...CHEAP! Â Don't come here expecting gourmet food or a gourmet set up. Â It's not and it doesn't pretend to be. Â It's quick, it's fast, and it's cheap! Â Oh yeah and it's good!
And one last disclaimer...I wasn't drunk when I ate here. Â Seems like it's a good drunk stopping spot but I went completely sober.
I made an excursion to Lakeview today. I passed all these places I wanted to eat, but my craving was for fish tacos. I used to live down the street from this place but now I'm in the South Loop, Land of No Tacquerias :(
So I crossed my fingers and hoped that they had the delicious fish tacos that I once had. Lucky me!!! FISH TACOS!! I was super excited when I ordered. I waited patiently while pretending to read stuff on my Blackberry.
"miiiss. fish tacos," says the cook. YAY! They were ready super fast. I went to the counter and oooooh...it looked sooo....goooo.... HUH? oh wait!! why is one much smaller than the other one!??!? hrmph! One taco was perfect and the other was like the runt of the litter. It barely had any fish on it. I remember coming here before and they were really generous. That sucked. Well at least it was still tasty. Tasty little runt.
It was such a nice day out today so my friend and I had planned to meet up for lunch at the noodle place just up the street from here but because it was so nice out, we decided to go for a walk and window shop until we saw a place that looked good...
and so i asked her, "Hey you like mexican food?" And she said, "sure" and so we went in... The place was empty... We ordered our food... The staff was nice... I got 2 carne asada tacos with beans and rice and an horchata...
... It hit the spot right? So i'm good...
If you've got a case of the munchies, a visit to Taco & Burrito House is just what you need. Chicken quesadillas = $2 each. Be generous with the tomatillo salsa, it's so tasty. Perfect for late night cravings! And the staff is so nice and patient, considering they have to deal with so many drunk patrons...
Review Source:I love this place. The food is actually pretty good for the price you pay. I love their steak nachos that comes with guacamole, beans, sour cream, mayo, and melt/ nacho cheese - amazing.
The place open early and close late. If you are trying to find a place to eat after midnight, this is the place to go.
I love their chicken nachos here. BEST nachos in the area.. Chicken is freshly prepared, with generous portions of the hot peppers, sour cream, guac, it's SO GOOD!!
Pretty good cheese fries too!
Huge portions for cheap ( I think the nachos are around $6, and fries around $3) and they deliever too. They're open late night - perfect for the after bar cravings.
Nachos - their carne asado nachos are awesome. Â I can eat them any time of the day and they do not skimp - instead, they pour on the refried beans, the yummy nachoey cheese that drips, lots of guacamole, tomato salsa, mozerella cheese and jalapeno peppers. Â DELISH and all for only $6.25 - one of the best deals in East Lakeview!
The best part about them - they're open super late so their nachos are available for late night munching, too!
This place is the bomb (for a taco/burrito place). Â
First of all, it is a great location (I can walk there). Â
Number two, the food is fast, good and cheap. A "dinner" platter (steak fajitas/refried beans/rice) is $6. Â Okay... so their burritos aren't comparable to those that I have had in the Mission District in SF, but whatever... the food here is still good.
Number three, they are open late, so that when you are totally hammered any night of the week, you can stumble on by and stuff you face (Chipotle closes by 11pm, I think).
Number four, if you want to drink some more, you can bring your own. Â Yes, you can bring your own beer (Corona, Miller Lite, or whatever). Â They'll give you these big styrofoam cups so you pour your beer into them. Â They'll also give you fresh cut limes, too, upon request for your Coronas.
Number five, they have cute Mexican decor with ceramic tiles on the walls and matching tables. Â There is a Latino music station playing in the background.
Lastly, they have a Spanish-speaking staff. Â Everytime I go there with a friend (that is a female), they'll ALWAYS say to me, "Es tu novia?"
And I'll respond with, "No... solamente es mi amiga."
"Por que' no? Â Ella es muy buena." (giving me the look that the girl is really hot.)
I love this place.
