Yum! We ordered delivery on a Sunday morning...and had the best verde chilaquiles...maybe even ever! Â It's easy to do chilaquiles wrong, but these were everything right! Â Perfect flavor and spice. Â Of course the chips were a little soft, but not soggy. The steak burrito was huge for the price and the fajitas were also fresh and hit the spot. Now our new favorite Mexican takeout because the prices are reasonable for great Mexican food. Â (Especially compared to other south loop-ish places like Carbon & Cantina).
Review Source:Very nice Mexican restaurant with a small bar in the front. They have a chalkboard with a different dollar special for every day of the week. Of course, I went for my usual: burrito suizo and chips and salsa. The chips and salsa was pretty expensive, but then even the small size is giant!
The food came out remarkably fast, and the portion size was so large I ate it over two meals (and I was VERY hungry!) The burrito was delicious, though the chips could have used a little salt and tasted like they came out of a bag, and the salsa was lacking jalapenos and was heavy on the canned crushed tomatoes.
Overall, I was pleased and will be back.
I love, love, love this place!
Legit Mexican food at great prices, friendly staff & strong, delicious margaritas! (1/2 price on Thursdays)
I typically go for tacos, quesadillas, sopes or burritos - no complaints here, I'm happy with my food every time.
One Friday after a particularly trying week, I went to dinner with a friend & saw this drink & ordered it - thinking it was a regular margarita with 2 mini coronas... Not at all. It was gigantic & delicious!!! Since my friend doesn't drink, I was going it solo... Let me tell you, I've gotten more out of those $24 than I ever would at any bar.
It's essentially 3 margaritas (in one fish bowl of a margarita glass) with 2 full sized Corona's flipped into it. It tastes like iced tea with lemonade. Yum! Careful, though, if you're not sharing, it will: Mess. You. Up. Trust me.
I recommend this place for food and/or drinks 10/10 times. You just can't go wrong, especially not for the price.
I've only tried the Horchata and the steak tacos. Â Both were good. Â The Horchata is sweeter than usual. Â Tacos were solid, but nothing special. Â The owner chewed out the cashier (in Spanish) for offering me a plastic to-go bag. Â Not a problem because they were already in a paper bag.
Review Source:I sign up for Yelp just because of Taqueria La Mexicana! This restaurant is in my neighborhood and we have been there a few time, always left happy, full, and very satisfied. We use http://restaurant.com coupon so the price is nice, but even without the coupon the price here is very reasonable.
The food is great. Spiced pork: awesome. Shrimp cocktail: cooked just right, not too raw, not overcooked, we kept digging and fishing out shrimps (a lot). Fried red snapper: super crunchy, freshly fried.
Settings: very nice, deco like a small town eatery in Mexico. The kitchen can be seen from the tables.
Staff: awesome: very helpful, smiled all the time. Feels like family. There was a boy in the family doing homework on the counter.
Not bad of a place to grab a quick bite. the taco's here are not too bad for the price, it is a little better than taco bell, but then taco bell is not really considered an authentic Mexican restaurant.
Specials of the day's are usually posted by the front door, they usually have Tuesday $1 tacos (beef or chicken w/ lettuce and tomato - and it is tasty) that I take advantage of in this downward economy.
There is plenty of metered and residential parking but be aware that when there is a White Sox game, you require a parking permit or you will be given a parking ticket.
We had no idea what to eat on a very boring, cold, dreary Saturday night, so we decided to stop in here, since we had always wanted to try it out. Â
I decided to have a sope de chorizo and noticed that they made tamales on the weekends, so I had tried one chicken and one pork. My boyfriend had the carne a la mexicana (or something like that). His meal came with rice/beans. etc My stuff was a la cart. Â
This restaurant serves alcohol...but we both went the non-alcoholic route. Â The complimentary chips were ok, nothing special...neither was the salsa...it was not hot, and there was really nothing to it. Â More on the watery side...very tomato-ey. Â meh. Â
We also received a complimentary cup of soup which was a nice treat, considering how nasty and cold it was outside. Â It was tasty, the pasta was a little overdone, but what do you expect..it was pretty late, and I'm sure it was sitting in a pot somewhere for a while...but it was still pretty good. Â
As for the main food....the sope was really big! Â The sope itself was soft, and I appreciate that. Â some places they are hard like cement disks which means they are not fresh. Â the flavors were ok, I kept wishing, however, that I had some aguacate, or guacamole...a little dollop would have been nice...I don't know it needed a little something. Â It was good, it had beans, chorizo, lettuce, tomato, sour cream - I can't remember if it had cheese (it may have)...
The stars of the show were the tamales...by far! Â If for no other reason, I will be returning to this restaurant to get the tamales. Â I usually only eat tamales once or twice a year, and even then I am really picky. Â Maybe it was the nasty weather, but for some reason I ordered tamales, I figured if I didn't like them, my boyfriend would eat them.... Â well, that didn't happen. Â Let me just say that I am also a meat snob and if I see even one weird piece of meat, I won't finish the rest of the meal... so the chicken tamal, was made with shredded meat that was perfect, not a fatty piece in there in a green sauce, but damn it was kick your ass hot!!!!! Â But it tasted so good, I just cooled off with some of the sour cream from the sope and dove in again for the kill. Â WOW so good! Â Now I was too full to eat the pork tamal that evening...but the following day I had it and it was just as good...only it was shredded pork, in a mild red sauce. Â SO YUMMY!!!!! Â
My boyfriend said he also liked his carne a la mexicana (or whatever it was called). Â It was some beef strips in a red sauce and as he sat there with a runny nose, he announced to me that it was also hot as hell...
The staff was very friendly. Â No complaints in that department. Â
The cost for the meal was only about $20, but I ended up buying more tamales to go ($1.50 each) to it went up to about $27.
It's the Mexican food you expect from a place with an unbelievably compact restroom. With that established, Taqueria La Mexicana earns points with the complimentary soup and affordable knock-you-on-your-culo margaritas.
Don't let my bathroom comment fool you, the decor is more stylish than the average hole-in-the-wall taqueria. Standard 2 TVs, warm, inviting colors, neon lights and a stocked bar with seating make this place a cut above some usual haunts.
The staff have been incredibly cooperative. Once they packaged up the complimentary salsa to take home, another time they split a bill for 6 people despite all the trouble that goes on once the meal is finished (my friends need to learn to speak up beforehand!)
The burritos, tacos and other standbys are good but give the dinners a try, you won't be disappointed.
This place has been up and down in terms of the quality over the last several years. Â For awhile, I actually stayed away from the place for a awhile. Â Fortunately, I learned through two of my sisters that the place has definitely been on the "good" side of things for awhile. Â
I absolutely crave the Al Pastor burrito. The seasoning of the pork, mmmm... Spiced just right and always cooked to perfection to my tastes. I always ask for everything (minus sour cream and cheese) and ask that they also add onion and cilantro. These are perfect ingredients to add on and are a perfect compliment to the pork. Â
The rice and beans are good enough. Â Again, nothing exceptional. Â What can you really do to the beans to make them better? Â Maybe a little bit more moist (but not super runny like at other places). Â I usually put a dollop of their salsa in the beans and it becomes a total treat. Â
Speaking of the salsa, it's usually very, very good. Â A nice combination of ingredients and a good amount of chunky onion and tomato to make it good (but not borderline on a pico de gallo type affair). Â The chips that come with it are usually fresh but I'm not overly crazy about them. Â They are simply okay (as opposed to the chips at Mama Nena's which are really fresh and good). Â
I have to say that I also enjoy their steak. Â It's prepared very well, good flavor and you get a pretty fair portion. Â So, if I find myself not craving Al Pastor (lately, that is rare), I will order a steak taco dinner on flour tortillas with everything plus that onion and cilantro add on request. Â Â I am always deliciously satisfied with the dinner. Â
The chicken is cooked and spiced simply but it's very good. Â Juicy and very pleasing. Â I will sometimes order that in the form of a chicken burrito or taco dinner... again, with everything plus onion and cilantro.
The tortas are a hit and miss affair, I must admit. Â I think the bread was toasted nicely but the most recent one that I had was with their Milanesa (breaded steak) and I was not too impressed. Â The sandwich was dry and the breaded steak was very unremarkable and borderline bland. Â
Now, the Al Pastor torta was a much better experience and the overall sandwich benefited from it. Because the pork is more favorable and moist, the balance of the toasted bread and beans was balanced out by it. I enjoyed it. Â
The cup of soup they give you when you come in is standard but pleasing fare. Â I jazz it up a bit by adding a couple of spoons of that great salsa and it's another treat I enjoy. Â
Right now, as I type this, I am enjoying their Horchata in a huge "to go" cup. Â I enjoy it greatly. Â It's got a nice smooth flavor and is my second favorite (Tio Luis is the champ in this category) in the two neighborhoods I go to for easy access meals when I'm not out and about.
I'm sorry, but for being a total hole-in-the-wall the food here in amazingly good. Â It's fresh, it's flavorful & it's cheap! Â My absolute fav are the chicken enchiladas with mole. Â There's just something about their mole - it sings! Â I have had the pastor enchiladas as well, which were good also, but the chicken is particularly tasty. Â My boyfriend is hopelessly hooked on their chicken tostadas, which he gets everytime. Â The salsa is a perfect combination of heat, cilantro and tomato as well. Â Not too much of anything. Â We are starting to consider this our -GO-TO hole for fab, authentic cheap Mexican & WILL keep going back.
Review Source:The service (for carry-out) was efficient and friendly. However, the food was underwhelming.
The bread for the torta was dry. The chicken was good quality but not really flavorful. The steak in the tacos didn't seem like it was very high quality; I had to pick out several pieces of fat. Maybe they're better at vegetarian stuff? My companions got cheese enchiladas and the nachos and they seemed happy.
It seems cute inside. On the small side, but with a number of tables plus a bar.
When I trek here it's for the al pastor (Which is 5 star!). Nothing else. I've tried other menu items but they were either your typical Mexican fare or just unmemorable.
Actually, I would have to say to stay away from the Burrito Suiza (Actually, i'm not sure what it's called, but it's a burrito with a sauce and melted cheese on top of it.) The tortillas they use for the burritos in general have a really weird smell to me. Almost metallic? Weird, I know, but whatever that smell is is really unappetizing.
Sorry, didn't care for this place!
I ordered a torta de carne asada and it was just no good.
The bread just completely fell apart and it was so messy!
My boyfriend had the nachos al pastor and they were very greasy.
They skimped on the meat too!
We were just left completely unsatisfied.
I swear, everytime I pass this place, whoever's with me always gets an ear-full!
During my college years in Chicago, I was a frequent patron of "La Mex", as we affectionately referred to it. While the other kids would do their studying at the library or coffee shop, we'd head to La Mex to get our school work done over chips and salsa and pitchers of strong-as-f#ck margaritas. Rarely were there more than two tables with people. The waitress/owner would often be relaxing at the counter up front, watching her telenovelas on the TV. She'd usually turn down the volume so we could concentrate.
The food at La Mex is just good, solid, tasty mexican cuisine. No fusion bullcrap, no stupid gimmicks. I usually ordered the enchiladas de mole which were delicious. I can't recall all the other items I ate there during my years in the neighborhood, but I was rarely disappointed.
The staff and owners were always very friendly and I should hope La Mex has retained its quiet, simple, no-frills charm amidst the dangerous creep of glass-faced condos and ritzy apartment buildings.
Taqueria la Mexicana is a little spot tucked into a building just west of Halsted on 35th. As you walk in- you are reminded of a diner with a short counter with a few stools and simple table, chairs and a few booths inside.
On the night we were there- there were only two guys working the place, the cook and the "jack of all trades" guy who was the host, bartender, server and manager all at the same time. We were told to sit anywhere and chose a booth back in the corner.
The menu has alot of options of menu combinations to single items to specials of the house with nothing over $10. Chips and salsa were put down in front of us and were replenished when needed. We also got some complimentary soup (sort of a pasta vegetable blend) all before we ordered.
We chose simply; the Tostada combination for my friend and Tres Amigos for me (I wanted to try a little of this and that and this combo had three different items). We also ordered a beer and one of their highly touted margaritas.
The food was quick to arrive and was just as quickly devoured. While tasty- I think we were both hungry enough that anything would have been quickly put away. As for the drinks? I say stick with the beer. The margarita had that overly sweet taste of a premade mix, and while strong and big (there are two sizes and the large is LARGE!) I didn't really care for it.
This place is really reasonable. Dinner for two with drinks was only $28 and they take credit cards which is always a plus in my book!
Since most of the bars down this way don't serve food- this will surely go on my list as a place to get cheap food fast on those nights when you need a little fill up!
Another one of those reviews that for the food it's a real solid three star place, not anything to rave about but just a good meal. Â However due to a friendly and very competent server you throw in the fourth.
This is a simple but clean neighborhood place, not large and they have counter service with stools for a real quick bite or some local conversation with the cook, who also sent us off with a nice thank you as we left.
We both ordered dinners, me the enchiladas with mole sauce, not the best mole but tasty. Mole sauce is subjective, I've had better, my husband tried it and like it more than some other places. He had steak tacos which he enjoyed served up with onion, cilantro and lime, in other words the right and proper way! Â Plenty of food for the money, don't order apps unless you're real hungry. She also brought us a some chicken soup, nice touch.
When we ran out of salsa, she gladly brought more and also brought the verde salsa out too. Our water glasses were kept full, service a was attentive without hoovering over us.
I'd come back to try other things, they do serve alcohol and they had a sign up about great margaritas, didn't try one, maybe next time.
Two things about the rest room, first it's a onesie so there is a lock on the door as you enter, use that one because if you close the stall door it's literally inches from the toilet, and I mean inches. Also please fix the heat, it was cold in there. The dining room nice and warm, then you hit the restroom and question, do I really want to expose my cheeks?
All and all, just a nice place with good food and stellar service, best of all not run over with trixies, chads, and other weirdness. If you have to ask what I mean...please don't show up here and ruin the mood.
I have to Mexico 12 times in my life time and this is very down home type of Mexican spot. If you found it in a mid size town In Mexico, it would be the best place in town to eat. Here in Chicago, we are very blessed with restaurants of all strip. This one was a great find IHO.
Having said all that, the food at this place is 3 cuts above most of the Mex spots I have eaten at in my 55 years in Chicago.
After I placed my order, the server came by with the baskit of chips , Â salsa verda, and a reed sauce with a nice bite to it. Then came a boal of killer bean soup. This was a nice touch on a cold raining day.
I ordered a carna asada burrito, with a side of beans. The meat was fresh, tender, spiced just right. It was smothered in a home made sauce loaded with onion, green pepper, galic, and the taste was out of this world paired with the beef. The beans were 1st ratet with cheese and a nice sauce on the side . My wifes tacos were big, fresh , and nicely garnished. The locals keep coming in for to-go sacks of food.
I needed the beans like a new hole in my head.If I had 3 days I could never eat the whole plate. No filling , just meat. It reminded me of burritos I used to eat years back, in Denver Co. long before Mexican food was on every corner like it is now. The price for my self and my wife to over eat with a tip was abont $16.00. I can't wait to go back and try the rest of the menu.
where else can I go to get fantastic Mexican food and drink for $15!! (4 beers and entree with tip). I watched a Sox game here with a friend since we were hungry and most of the bars nearby do not have food. It was fantastic. The people who run the restaurant are really nice and make amazing food. Domestic Beer is $2.75 (or was it $2.25). When we went to pay the guy even cut us a break for the beer since we ordered what would be more than a bucket price. Alright!! They also take credit or cash so that was nice since we didn't have time to stop at the ATM before coming to eat.
