This is still the best place to shoot pool in the Berkeley area. I love they have one of my favorite beers on tap, Death & Taxes, they had the SF Giants game playing on their TV by the bar, friendly staff, and random music playing in the background (brownie points from me for whoever put a Blackstar song on the playlist). If you're not into pool, there's also a shuffleboard at the front and pinball machines near the outdoor patio area. Plenty of booth seating at the front if you just want to sit down with friends and chit-chat or something. Depending on where you get your pool table in the back, you might get to sit on a couch.
Review Source:This place was pretty awesome. I wish there was a place just like this in San Jose or the city. We got there around 9 so it wasn't filled with college folk yet, but the age range was acceptable for someone nearing 30. Good music, TONS of space, 3 areas for pool, lower, upper, and 1 table in the rear patio. Also lots of little nooks for people going for drinks after a date or whatnot. Nice, big bar and friendly bartenders and multiple bathroom locations for the ladies.
I liked that it felt truly like a pool hall upstairs and truly like a fun "let's get wasted" bar downstairs. Probably gets a bit crowded later with the influx of the college crowd, which could be annoying or fun depending on what you are looking for.
I would be back for sure  if I was in Berkeley more often.
Very loud bar and very crowded but very fun at the same time. There are rounded tables, where a big party can sit. There are random couches, stools, pool tables. Plenty of room just to stand. Getting a drink is a mission though. The bar gets surrounded with a huge crowd and it takes around 5 minutes for the wait to even order a drink. If you do get your order taken, might as well get mulitple ones so that you can make the least amount of trips to the bar. The music playing is always good, mostly Top 40. The decoration is pretty, very under the sea theme. There is also a different special everyday. It's usaully good.
Review Source:OKAY so this place is a perfect blend of good and bad music (you know the really bad pop song you wake up singing but you're not sure why i.e. Come &Get It and I Love It) and of course they play it way too loud. Must be 21 which is great so then I don't feel too old shooting pool next to the coeds.
To sum it up this is one of those hangouts you go to when there's nothing else to do but you always have a blast once you're there, well at least we do! Cheap drinks & cheap billiards!
Minus one star because we always seem to have to wait for a table even though they have at least 20 billiards.
Pretty much one of the only on-and-poppin' spots around Berkeley on a Thu/Fri/Sat nights that has something other than a full bar and music, and that is pool tables (lots of 'em), shuffleboard, and darts. I've come here on several occasions, mostly Fri/Sat nights and if you show up around/past 10-11 it tends to get pretty crowded, sometimes to the point that you can barely move through to the bar to order a drink and a couple times we've had to wait an hour to get a pool table.
I do enjoy their special cocktails, great selection of beers (Moose Drool is a current favorite) and the waiters are pretty awesome (and not bad looking at all). Alcohol is very affordable and they have special drinks too. Can't go wrong with this place if you're looking for something fun to do around Berkeley besides stuffing your face.
You'll be sure to meet some characters here every time you come (or at least that's my experience). One note - beward of the crowd, this is a very mixed one - you'll get SOME students, some locals and people out of town and some really random people who drink a bit much and try starting fights (witnessed this once) but bouncers seem pretty on it so it should get cleared up quickly ;)
Overall if you want something besides a restaurant/bar, this is it! If you're looking for a club though, SF is the way to go.
Thalassa is my FAVORITE BAR in Berkeley!
Oh man! My college days were packed full of wonderful, unforgettable, forgettable, and crazy nights at Thalassa. Everything from the atmosphere, to the pool tables, to the one hot guy bartender is so good!
Drinks - Fairly priced, not cheap, not expensive. More on the stronger side, but not overpowering that you get wasted really fast.
Pool Tables - Just a great place to hang out with friends and play a couple rounds.
The only one negative was that music was always WAY TOO LOUD! Like you would have to shout to your friend sitting right next to you. Especially if you sit in that area with the tables next to the bar.
Pretty sweet. I don't live in the area, but was at Thalassa for a friend's birthday. It's exactly the kind of place I'd be at every night if I lived in the area.
Good, cheap drinks. And they carry some great beers that I haven't been able to find elsewhere.
It gets crowded and loud later in the night, so try to come early to grab a seat or pool table.
Great space for drinking here. Full bar with loads of pool tables, a bit of bar space, and some booths for privacy. Not too many beers available, but it's not a bad selection at all with scrimshaw, lagunitas, and other staples. Definitely more of a sit-and-chill kind of bar, but man were there some creepy people at this place - think 60+ year-olds with 20 year-olds. Kind of gross, but I still want to hang here.
Review Source:What's better than dranks and pool, combined? Â Answer: drunk pool!
As you may have guessed from Facebook evidence, this is a classic place for birthday celebrations. Â You feel so special when they ring a bell while presenting you a free birthday drink. Â Also, it's at a rather convenient location (within walking distance at least, unlike Albatross), has long hours on all days of the week, and it's good for groups because it's so big with a lot of booths and pool tables. Â
The ambiance is truly unique--everything from the palm-shaped fans to the plastic mermaids perched on your collins glass to the blue bubbles behind the bar to the pufferfish lamps all create a unique tiki theme. Â The closest you'll get to an escapade in the tropics while at Berkeley.
Service is hit or miss. Â Some of the bartenders are really friendly, but others seem like the people who college students and favor normal people.
The one thing I really dislike is how terribly WEAK their drinks are. Â They're generally good in terms of taste, but it burns a hole in your wallet if you were planning to get drunk. Â Not only are they somewhat pricey ($10 AMF) (no happy hour booo), but incredibly skimpy in terms of alcohol (downing an AMF has the same effect as a sprite). Â I would go for their specialty drinks rather than ordering generics.
Drinks advice:
(++) Dark and stormy: Not ominous at all. Â Gingery, spicy, liked by everyone.
(++) Irish spring: whiskey-based, not fruity but tasty.
(+) Sex on the beach: yes it's a girl drink, but they make it well.
(+) Tokyo tea: less well known sister of the AMF. Â Not strong, but complex and interesting.
(-) Strawberry letter: way too fruity and gin is meh.
(-) Buttery nipple: really sweet, considering it's caramel schnapps and Bailey's.
(-) Tequila sunrise: IMO tequila tastes best in shots. Â For cocktails, I prefer their gingery tequila one but I forgot what it's called.
(-) Cuba libre: one of the cheapest drinks on the menu, but tastes like cola gone bad.
(--) Mai tai: bleh.... all you taste is rum.
(---) AMF: weaksauce! Â And it's in a tiny glass almost entirely filled with ice.
And keep in mind they serve absolutely no food, so eat before you come and expect to get the drunchies when you get home.
Just like when you're having too much at a party, the night can easily slip away into a quick blur of colorful (but overpriced) drinks, tipsy stumbling around in the dark, and memorable half-memories :)
I went on a Sunday night for my friend's 21st birthday. This place was OK, and the bartender was friendly and everything, but they didn't offer her a free drink which I thought was weird...Luckily, the place was actually fairly crowded and we later found some nice men to buy her birthday drinks (and me, for being her cute friend).
The main problem was the bartender's drinks SUCKED. We had the worst Long Islands I've ever had in my life (pure alcohol and lemon--did not taste like tea at all, which if you know how to properly mix a LIIT it should come out to be), and we had two different white Russians which he first put way too much vodka in, and then way too much Kahlua (and we hadn't said anything to him about making a change, he just clearly has no consistency in his drink-making). Unfortunately I don't remember his name, but he was a good-looking (thank god for his bartending future), white guy with brown hair.
Of course, I still give it 3 stars cuz too much alk is better than too little, and it was a fun scene, with lots of pool tables, couches, outside seating, and inside seating. It's all right. I'd probably go back since in Berkeley there are slim pickin's for bars, but I'd make someone else make my drinks.
Neat place. There's a huge pool room that is always packed. I went with a group of around 8 people and it did take some time for a table. I want to say we waited around 35 minutes so be prepared for that. However, they do have a nice bar to tide you over with! I actually really enjoyed this place. You'll fit right in if your a college student. If you want less of a laid back environment you can enjoy the booths and "lounge" area in the connecting room.
Drinks were just like any other place.. nothing crazy special about them.
Great for dates, fun with the the girls/guys, great for groups &&& a full bar!!! Shots, shots, shots shots shots shots!! Tons of pool tables and I have never had to wait an absurd amount of time for a table which is a plus. Thalassa has a really nice atmosphere that just makes you want to have a good time. When I cant decide what to do with my friends I always suggest, "let's just go to Thalassa" because I know it is a place everyone will enjoy.
Review Source:I'm gonna start this off by being honest: before turning 21, I was the kind of person who would scour Yelp reviews of campus bars for words like "underage," "fake," "ID," etc to see what my chances were of getting in. Â Verdict: yes, you *can* get in underage, but not on busy nights and certainly not when they have more than one bouncer. Â Don't be dumb or call attention to yourself and you shoooould be fine ... though, I did get denied once or twice. Â Oh well.
WITH THAT BEING SAID: Thalassa is a'ight. Â Just a'ight. Â It's kind of a weird, sad crowd on the off-nights during the week, so I wouldn't really recommend it unless it's for a special occasion. Â Their bartenders are patient and knowledgeable though -- I've pulled the dick move of ordering a Long Island no ice, with an ice cup on the side more than a few times, and they do nothing about it other than wink and serve me with a smile. Â
On weekends it can get crazy crowded though. Â Go with a few friends and keep an eye out for tables that look like they're about to clear out, or don't be afraid to find another small group and share one of the bigger tables together. Â Their pool tables are nice but EXPENSIVE so be prepared to get charged by the quarter-hour (or some fraction thereof). Â Kinda wish they had dancing but oh well, you can't win 'em all.
They make a mean Moscow Mule btw. Â But their Old-Fashioneds kinda suck. Â Again, can't win 'em all. Â At the end of the day it's just another funky-looking, dark, campus bar.
I first came here on my 21st birthday with a group of friends right at the end of that semester's dead week. It was surprisingly packed considering how many hours were left before finals began. I wasn't in there for too long, since I couldn't even get in until midnight and the place closes at 2. But I did have a good time while I was there. One of the employees was nice enough not to kick me out or give me a fine for throwing up in the pool hall haha...
Since then, I've been here for friends' 21sts, celebratory events like the end of finals, and just to play pool with friends whenever I drop by Berkeley. The best time to come play pool is in the afternoon or early evening before more groups starting flowing in trying to get a table. Overall, it's a great place with nice staff and decent drinks to enjoy a night in Berkeley with your friends.
A chill spot for drinks and pool. Came here a few times and had a pleasant experience with the pool tables and pool sticks considering how worn down other places are. The bar is a little on the smaller side so it get difficult to order drinks when it's crowded but other than that, no complaints.
Review Source:#135. Thalassa was the only bar I kept going back to when I was living in Berkeley (we're not going to count BTC at Bear's Lair). Â It's close to campus. Â Next to the bus stop. Â And everyone and their mother goes here for their birthday. Â Can you blame me? Â Their drinks are mixed well and are pretty reasonable. Â I love their round booths too. Â You'll have to come here early to be sure you won't be standing around all night though.
Good drink and good company means a good night here.
You'd think that at pushing 25 years old, I'd be able to get into a bar without issues, but never fail Thalassa! Every time I come here I have to show another form of ID or something with my name on it to prove who I am. I guess I should take the compliment?
Good drinks, outdoor seating is nice on a warm night. You might get stuck waiting for a pool table for a while, but there are other games and things to occupy yourself with here easily.
One of my favorite places to hang out, and one of my top spots in Berkeley. Let me start by saying the drinks are pretty good and decently priced. Mixology this ain't, but free refills on soda and juice is pretty had me pulling a Buster Bluth, and the cocktails are pretty good too.
Now thay the negatives are out of the way, this place has everything. Pool, darts, good sesting, an outdoor area, you name it. It's great for groups of any size, especially if some people in your party like to play darts while others like pool and pinball. There's a lot of room to spread out if you have a big group, and it's not hard to stake out a place for a small group either. Overall, a great place to go for a night of fun n' games - I'd even drive from Oakland if I had to!
Oh, Thalassa. One of my favorite nightlife spots in Berkeley, unless of course you go on a Friday or Saturday night and want to spend 30 minutes waiting in line for a drink and over an hour for a pool table.
Piece of advice from a Berkeley grad who has been to thalassa more times than I can count: GO SUNDAY-THURSDAY. We used to come here on a Tuesday night and it was quite enjoyable. Also, if loud music and dim lighting isn't your thing, stick to thalassa during the day- it's a fantastic pool hall, but in the evenings has more of a club-like feel where you are likely to scream at the top of your lungs in the ear of the person next to you so they can hear you. Personally, I like that type of nightlife environment. But if you don't, then this might not be the place for you.
Unlike Chez Panisse, this place could burn down and nobody would care.
Do you want to stare at your friends sipping on drinks with any attempt at conversation being drowned out by terrible music? Go to Thalassa. Do you want to try and swim your way past bros with popped collar polos? Go to Thalassa. Do you like to question your life choices sometime around 1a.m.? Go to Thalassa. Do you want to end up pregnant from some drop-out deadbeat who'll never call you back? Go to Thalassa.
This place seems like the right of passage when Berkeley students turn 21. This is a local bar that is pretty big. There are pool tables in one room and even more pool tables in the next. You have to rent them and usually they are completely packed all night. The only drink I have gotten here is a Midori Sour and I think it is $6-8 which is pretty average for my drink. The place is pretty chill to hang out at but finding seating will be sooo tough. The seats near the pool table are obviously taken by those playing pool so your only options are the booths, couches, and tables in the seating area. They are always packed and most likely you will not be able to find a seat. So you will probably just linger at the bar and stand all night. This place is alright but it is definitely not my favorite place to chill on a weekend night since it is so loud and crowded. You will see people of all ages here at night.
**TIPS**
1) You gotta come here if you are a Berkeley student who just turned 21. Its the right thing to do.
2) Enjoy!
I don't like it here.
My friends seem to, and that's how I've ended up here so many more times than I would choose, but I don't like it here. Too many bros and hos and bitches. Because, duh, hos and bitches are different. And they're all at Thalassa.
The last time I was here, the staff waited until last call to have ALL OF THEM come together to take a shot, so literally the whole staff was behind the bar and not paying attention to any customers. It was ridiculous. Like, I get it, you work at a bar, but don't fucking wait until last call when EVERYONE comes to get their last drink to start ignoring them. I was pissed and my tip showed it.
But I mean, Berkeley is weird and there aren't many other places to drink downtown after a certain hour, especially if you don't want beer.
That's why people go to Thalassa.
I came here Friday night with Judy W. && a few others for the second time && was able to get reasonably drunk at a reasonable price. Luckily we were able to sit at a booth && get away from the bar which was hella crowded, of course. It's loud && dimly lit && a good time, I only wish they served food because I can develop quite the appetite after drinking for 4 hours.
Review Source:Came here on Friday with a few friends. got here before all the tables were taken! Yay!!
I ordered a Dark and stormy .. basically rum and ginger beer? and lime? and fresh squeezed ginger juice. It was amazeballs. lol. I love love love love love it. For 8 bucks, not a bad price at all. I love the ginger juice, it was nice and spicyyyyyyy.
I'll definitely come back here more just for the drink!! and maybe some pool too. I wish they had happy hour drinks... or maybe they do, and I just dont know about it... lolol....
=]
This is by far my favorite bar in the downtown Berkeley/ around Campus area. Do not let the sketchy exterior and lack of a sign or any identifying feature deter you away from this place. Once you are inside the decor is really charming and fun. I think they are going for some kind of nautical, carribean, beach theme. They have a bunch of little fish tanks behind the bar, plastic fish hanging from the ceilings, and anything else nautical you can imagine is probably lurking somewhere on the walls or ceilings. I have never ventured to the pool table area because I cannot play pool and am embarrassed to even try, but the booths and lounging area is really nice and cushy. It is a great place for groups to come and just hang out and have a drink.
That being said, if you plan to come on a Thu-Sat night, be prepared to wait for you drink. They bar is always super swamped and there never seems to be any kind of order. If you manage to elbow your way onto a bar seat, I recommend staying there for the rest of the night because that is the best way to guarantee that you will get the attention of your bartender. The drinks here are reasonably priced ($6-$9 for mixed drinks) and much better tasting than most of the other bars in the area. The music is loud so do not expect to be having any heart to heart conversations here. It is a nice place to have a couple drinks and enjoy the chaos happening around you.
Drinks-wise I would say that my favorite would be the Garden Party. It was the first drink I ever had here and it continues to be my favorite. It is melon flavored and very refreshing. They also make good midori sours and margaritas, basically any girlie drink you can think of, they can make pretty well.
The crowd is not just college kids, but you see a wide array of different characters here, making it very different from a lot of the bars in this area. Overall, it is a nice place to hang out, get a good drink, and play some pool (or watch other people play).
Pool is one of the few things I am bad at that I don't feel bad about being bad at. Drinking rather elevates that apathy, and so any trip to Thalassa is usually spent seated on one of the tall chairs in the billiards room, drink in hand, only once in a very long while standing up to take an impatient shot with obvious and childish reluctance. Inevitably following would be a clarification to my friends that just because my grandfather had a pool table when I was growing up didn't mean I had to be some kind of expert at it. (He also had a dart board, a collection of hunting rifles, and a fishing boat, and I am no good at any of those things, either.)
That said, Thalassa is alright. The décor is its most charming asset - extreme blue and red lighting and sea-themed decorations clog the place, but not as much as the people. Every time I've been, the establishment has been completely crammed, from front window to bar to seating area to pool room. It makes it rather difficult to get a drink from the bar, and hard to lounge once you've been watered, especially if you prefer your drink in your mouth rather than down your front or on the floor.
If you manage to get a table (or even just a few chairs) in the pool room, however, you're doing alright. Often the wait for an open pool table is a bit lengthy, but I usually don't mind: my lack of cue-dexterity and inability to judge angles means I prefer to watch other people play anyway. With skill levels ranging from almost expert to those too drunk to hold a cue steady, you're bound to get a good show. Weirdly, I almost always run into someone I know there (but I suppose that says more about the lack of decent nightlife locations in Berkeley, or a lack of creativity among my friends).
Thalassa is a fun place to go for third or fourth drinks, when you've already worked up a knack for shouting over way-too-loud music (there were nights when I couldn't hear the people I was seated across from at a table) and the deafening hum of hundreds of voices, but it's not a place I would enjoy on the soberer side of a Saturday night.
This is by far my favorite bar in the downtown Berkeley area.
I really like the whole ambiance of the pool hall/bar.
I always seem to come here on a Thursday or Friday night when it's most crowded, but I don't mind the whole wait. Despite it's closeness to UC Berkeley, I find that Thalassa isn't just a typical college bar. It has a wide array of people from all across the East Bay coming to satisfy their hunger for pool and quench their thirst.
The drinks are reasonably priced. I think I paid $10 for two beers, and Irish Car Bombs were $6.
Overall Thalassa is definitely a cool place to spend a Thursday night, and if it's too crowded, I suggest heading over to Kona Club in Oakland. It's owned by the same guy and also has a cool and unique vibe.
This is a great place to go with a group of friends to play a game of pool or shuffle board. They have a cool outdoor area equipped with a pool table for the smokers who often get overlooked at other bars.
Their drinks are pretty strong and the bartenders are as friendly as they get, especially Skyler. He's easy on the eyes too ;)
No but really you'll have a good time here whether you're going with friends or on your own. There's almost always a strange character at the bar you can talk to if you're bored.
Before I start my review, I just want to say that Thalassa is very strict on ID's. Â So for all you college students that are not yet 21 - fake ID's and your friends'/siblings' ID's WILL NOT work. Â I'm not saying I've tried using fake ID's before. Â And I'm not saying I had 1 fake ID confiscated, and luckily got back my friend and brother's ID's on multiple failed attempts at Thalassa. Â Future school admission committees/employers/etc, those were hypothetical situations that I was told about.
Moving on to the review, this was the 1st stop on my 21st birthday. Â I pre-gamed with some friends prior to this destination, drinking half a bottle of wine, two beers, and two shots within a 30 minute window. Â So I get to Thalassa's, got my free drink, standard rum and coke. Â Had about 4 shots within 10 minutes... Then one of my friend suggested we head to another bar to so I can get free drinks. Â As I was walking out...BAM... The next thing I remember was waking up in my apartment the next day. Â Apparently we went to a few more bars afterwards and repeated, but that's a story for another day.
So my experience at Thalassa's was, as you can probably tell, not a very comprehensive one, but I have been back on multiple occasions since my 21st.
Pros:
-they give you a "yack bucket" for you to "yack" in so you don't make a mess (for the record, I did not have to use it on my 21st)
-tons of billiard tables
-cool lounge area
-sick bar
-great atmosphere
-drinks are not terribly overpriced
-sometimes food carts station themselves outside so you can buy food
Cons:
-can get crowded sometimes
-have to wait a while to get a pool table on certain days
-they don't sell food
I remember during my first 3 years at Berkeley, whenever I'm walking up Durant Avenue, I'd think "I wish I was old enough to be in there!" For a while though, I naively thought it was just a 21+ billards area. Turns out it's also a cool college bar lol.
A few of my friends and I decided to go here for my 21st. SO MUCH FUN. I got a free birthday shot (anything of your choice) and playing pool was as satisfactory as I thought it would be. It's moderately crowded on the weekends, but I've found that it's more fun that way with all the interesting people who come up and chat with you.
Overall, the pool tables are plentiful and nicely maintained; the underwater aquarium-esque decor is inviting and interesting; there's also lots of lounge space for those who don't want to play pool. As for the drinks, I like them fruity and delicious and have not been disappointed yet of the countless times I've been there. By far my favorite bar because it's so close and accessible, but also because of the relaxed vibe and pool tables. I just love pool.
If i could give this place 50 stars I would! I've been coming for for at least a good 5-6 years and I can honestly say I have NEVER had a bad night. Me and my friends have sooooo many stories that start off "Remember that one night at Thallasa?" This place is EPIC and me and my friends refer to it as Disneyland because for pool lovers who love to drink. Its the happiest place on earth. But let me break it down.
MUSIC:
Amazaing! If your a fan of MUSIC this place is perfect. They play everything (Maybe excluding country) I remember back in the day they used to have a jukebox but now they hook up an iPod to the speaker system. Its perfectly normal to hear Queen, Dr. Dre, Ellie Goulding, 2 Chainz, AfroJack, Alicia Keys, Journey, Pink and in that order. So if your a fan of all genres this place is for you.
PEOPLE:
The crowd usually consist of college kids. I'd say the age group is probably 21-30s. But there are times when I see older ppl. Hell my dad is in his 50s and we come all the time. But its a really cool crowd. Never once havve I seen a fight or argument. They do have security at the door to check IDs but I've never really seen them do anything pther than that. One of the guys is a sneakerhead so were always talking about shoes. Granted there are times where ppl will come celebrate something and the get suuuuuuuuuuper wasted but never has it came to the point where it was an issue.
DRINKS:
By far the best bar I've ever went to. The bartenders are always nice even when packed. All i do is shots and they always poor heavy on those to the point where I feel im underpaying lol. So I always tip heavy. They usually have a special drink they've made that is usually pretty good. And if for whatever reason your drink isnt how you like it they will gladly toss it and redo it. They have a shit load of beers to, some I've never even heard of. So if thats your thing then your good. There also very helpful with lightweights. My friend doesnt like the taste of alcohol so we asked what she suggest. She made my friend a Mamas Kool Aid which taste just like red (which is a flavor in my book) Kool Aid. It was so good I had 2. And I was DONE! lol.
POOL:
They have about 25-30 tables. All are really kept up. They also have a table outside in the smoking area which isnt regulation but if your out there for a quick smoke is good to get a game on. Prices are pretty resonable to. We stay about 3hrs and usually pay around $20. Be prepared though if you come on a weekend, this place is going to be PACKED! Expect to wait about 1hr-an hour and a half. But if your with ppl and having drinks it goes by fast.
All in All I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!
This is your typical college-town bar. With UC Berkeley really close by, the crowds here, especially on weekends, is mostly college and graduate students. The weekends are really crowded, up to the point where you have to wait hours for the pool tables and a pretty long time to get a bartender's attention.
With that being said, the shots are pretty generous, the drinks are pretty well-made, and the bartenders are really friendly if it's not super crowded. It's a good place to hang out and catch up, and seating isn't too sparse.
Recently, I made a lofty promise to myself. I would try my hardest not to go out just "for drinks." Instead, I would seek out drinking opportunities with some active, social element involved. Basically, I would find excuses to drink vs. drinking as an activity in itself.
This is about as noble as my resolutions get. I'm pretty proud.
Bowling is a great drinking opportunity. Trivia night is another. And now, Thalassa is hot on my radar as another way to downplay the drinking with something far more stimulating: whacking balls with sticks.
Thalassa is pretty epic, and - lucky you - much more than just a pool hall. There's a swank bar area in front, another loungey area in the middle (would be great for a group or party), and then the grand pool room. I didn't count the number of pool tables, but I'd guesstimate about 20ish. Gone are the days of writing your name on a chalkboard waiting to play winner.
I *think* pool prices are charged by the hour, great for splitting between a group. Between 5-6pm, I didn't notice a ton of teeny-boppers like other reviews mentioned...maybe they start to lurk after dark?
Thalassa is most definitely going on the top of my 'excuses to drink' list (after detox season is over)!
The music and the crowd are hit or miss here. What I do love about this place is that there's plenty of space and the drinks are reasonably priced. It's also conveniently located near the Downtown Berkeley BART station. All really great things that make this place a good place to visit.
If you want to play pool, there are plenty of pool tables. There's a juke box and cozy booths as well. You can even bring in outside food if you get the munchies or if you're like me, you need food when you drink.
I like Thalassa. I wish you were closer to me - although that might be a bad thing.
A few of my Berkeley friends and I decided to drunkenly waddle over here after getting ripped at The Graduate.
Shuffle board, lots of pool tables, arcades, and most importantly, cheap drinks. What else can you ask for?
This is totally a college bar though. Me, now in my early 30's, felt a little old in this place. =(
I really love the atmosphere and decor here at Thalassa. I'd say that this bar is one of the nicer bars in Berkeley that are close to the UC Berkeley campus. I've gone twice with my friends around midnight to celebrate their 21st birthdays and I was never disappointed.
There are ample pool tables for those that like to play a nice game of pool while drinking. Thalassa also has a lot of tables and booths for sitting. The booths can fit quite a lot of people so going with a large group isn't a problem.
The "buttery nipple" shot here is really good too. (It's good everywhere actually...) There are a lot of bartenders so you won't have to wait too long to get a drink at the bar. It's a fun environment to be in so if you're 21 definitely check this place out.
