Sliver is a new artesian pizza restaurant located on Center Street, the cross streets are Oxford and Shattuck. Sliver is centrally and conveniently located between UC Berkeley and Berkeley City College. Sliver is co-owned by former employees of The Cheeseboard. And like The Cheeseboard, they one make one type of pizza a day a customer is able to order and eat. Another artesian pizza source for us college students to either eat in or take-away or take-out.
I have wanted to try Sliver for quite sometime. It started when a friend asked me for cafe suggestions as back-up. She was going to meet up with a friend from out-of-town at The Cheeseboard for the obvious. I checked the trusty Yelp! app for alternative suggestions. It was long after the conversation I read the reviews for Sliver. I made a NTS (note-to-self) to come on down for a sliver and a slice of Sliver pizza.
The aforementioned friend and I came to Sliver after our volunteer duty on Monday (15 July) afternoon. The pizza du jour was as follows: Fresh Freestone Peaches, Carmelized Onions, Baby Spinach, Mozzarella, topped with a homemade blend of French Goat Cheese and Fresh Herbs. We each ordered a slice and were delightfully surprised to see one slice of pizza topped with a sliver--half the size of one slice! We were both immediately sold after one bite. Peaches on pizza--oh yeah! And I was quite surprised by the taste of the fresh goat cheese and fresh herb dressing--I was not too sure about goat cheese dressing on a pizza. This dressing was soooo good!
I had to come back the next day before class--that is a great sign to me--and that is how much I really, really liked Sliver! And it was my lucky day--potato pizza! Tuesday's (16 July) pizza: Roasted Yukon Gold Potatoes, Fresh Corn, Mozzarella, and Manchego Spanish Cheese topped with Fresh Cilantro, Garlic Olive Oil, and Mexican Key Limes. I ordered two slices. I tried the available sauces there, the lime cilantro and their red tomato sauce. I decided the lime cilantro sauce was the way to go with the Yukon Gold potato pizza for me. I was so happy to come on Yukon Gold potato pizza day.
Like The Cheeseboard, Sliver does list their pizzas for the week on one of the windows. Unlike The Cheeseboard, Sliver is open on Mondays.
Thursday is pizza with heirloom tomatoes topped with arugula this week. I came back for Heirloom Tomato Thursday and was quite happy I did!
I will have to get La Mére to come downtown Berkeley for a Sliver pizza sometime. I think she would quite like Sliver. A Sliver half pizza du jour should be enough for the two of us.
And I will have to check out Sliver with friends during Happy Hours 16h00 Ã 19h00--that is 4:00 to 7:00 P.M., Monday through Friday.
