a good, local chinese place. the food is far from stellar, but it's fairly priced and a nice place to go and sit down in downtown wilmette. further, people don't seem to really know about it, so it's rarely crowded.

I really love this place.  It has been my grandmas favorite Chinese choice since I was a child.  It's family run and they have some excellent menu items.  Their orange chicken is possibly the best that you will find and the rest of their menu is packed with fresh tasty options.  It's a bit more high end then some of the chop suey shops in the area, but if you're looking for quality meal this is your spot!

Tsing Tao has decent food and the service is excellent.  The owner is so kind. Their lunch specials are very reasonable, it comes with soup, egg roll and entree.  We just went the other day and noticed the prices went up, but that's ok, we still enjoyed our meal. I love their hot and sour soup, it's quite authentic.  Definitely better than most chinese restaurants in the burbs. I like the chop suey, mongolian beef and shrimp with veggies. Ambiance isn't the greatest, but my daughter loves the fish tank. She tries to sit in the booth right next to it. But do we really go to a chinese restaurant for ambiance??? We also do lots of carry-out.

My family has been eating here for over 20 years.  Not because there are no other Chinese restaurants.  This is because the food has always remained consistently good year in and year out.  The menu is very extensive and I think that anyone could find something that they would like.  Recently they have made aesthetic changes to the front of the restaurant, which give it more of a modern vibe.  This is the place that i compare all other Chinese food to, and in the north Chicagoland area there is no place better.

When going I would recommend trying the egg drop soup, or any of their soups for that matter cause they are fantastic.  They make real Chinese food here... So don't order crab rangoons or chicken wings.  Instead try their pot stickers or the bu bu platter because they are incredibly well done.

As for the entrees, there are plenty of options to chose from.  As I am regular I recommend trying the Hunan Beef, Princess Shrimp, Curry Chicken, or my favorite, which is an off the menu specialty of the chef, Richard's chicken.  Seriously though, that last dish has to be tried when dining here because it is absolutely delicious.  This place is the best Chinese food restaurant on the North Shore hands down.  It is a MUST for any person who enjoys Chinese food.

For a reasonable price, you get a lot of really great Chinese food at Tsing Tao. I've been going to Tsing Tao for literally years, maybe close to 12, both with and without my parents.

The dishes are traditional Chinese, family run and owned. The service is prompt, and tea is served, as well as water. Appetizers are really reasonable, unlike some places that charge 9 or 10 dollars for one. We ordered the Crab Rangoon, which is my favorite appetizer ever, Chinese or not. It comes out slightly crunchy, but completely soft and yielding when it hits your taste buds. Highly recommended! Tsing Tao makes the best ones I have ever had.

For about 2 dollars, I got a cup of Egg Drop Soup, also a Chinese classic. Although it is a rather simple soup, it is extremely flavorful and filled with yummy egg goodness. Simple isn't always bad when it comes to soups.

Entrees were Fried Duck and Mushu Beef. Since I've been to Tsing Tao many a time, I knew exactly what to order off the menu. My date let me choose, as it was his first time there, and was pleasantly surprised with just how fantastic the dishes were. He preferred the Mushu, which are thin pancakes filled with various vegetables and then beef, served with a plum sauce. Delectable!

The Fried Duck isa personal favorite of mine; I enjoy ordering things that people normally shy away from. Duck is certainly on that list, but when prepared properly, it is amazing.

A side of fried rice was ordered, and it was good as well, but fried rice usually is. Though according to my date, it was the best fried rice he had ever had, so take that as you will

Overall, Tsing Tao is a hidden gem tucked away in suburban Wilmette, but worth finding. If you enjoy traditional Chinese without a steep price tag, and flavor that leaps off the plate, this is the perfect place for you.

My in laws make a tradition to come every Friday. I take advantage of a good free meal. I have ordered everything from meat to seafood. I have never had a bad meal. Even when I am not present at the table, my lovely wife and Inlaws still buy me a tasty meal to come home. Great place, great staff.

I have been eating here for 6 years.
The babe and I do mean "babe" said there was no rice in her rice soup is nuts.
Also, if you are a Veggi, I suggest you go somewhere else.
Why don't you compare your portly figure to the people who own this place.
They are not over-weight and the ladies who work there---eat there and your husbands would exchange you for anyone who works there.  I KNOW,
I have asked. And now I am going to North Korea to find a girlfriend. That will not be easy.
Tell you what, you try making one of their meals. And feed it to your special someone.
You Americans are spoiled, over weight, lazy, and critical...
    And I am an American.
Besides where else can you go during the Holidays and avoid the MSG.

Eh.  We ate here because the boyfriend is from Wilmette and we were at his family home craving Chinese.

I had the moo shoo chicken.  I was ok.  Plum sauce was good.  BF had orange chicken, which he liked, but I did NOT.  It tasted like they added too much cornstarch and had almost no actual chicken pieces in it.  Lots of breading, not my bag.

We got sizzling rice soup without the rice.  Last time I checked that was kind of the point of the soup.  Pot stickers were ok, a bit greasy but if you like that thing, go for it!

If you're in Wilmette and you have a craving for Chinese, I would say you will probably get a decent meal here...but nothing special.

Decent food and friendly service. The atmosphere is lacking so I doubt I 'd come back but I would do take out. My biggest complaint--very few vegetarian dishes--I love veggie potstickers but theirs have pork, as do many of their dishes.

In my opinion this is more of a take out place that is set up for a dining experience. It's more or less tacky in decor and does not feel clean or organized. The food was not bad but certainly not stellar. We ordered 4 dishes to share and everyone liked them but one. Sorry, cannot remember which. The food is less than healthy and mostly greasy. Front desk taking order was friendly and food did not take long.

Nothing uniquely stellar, but if you're looking for a comfortable sit-down Chinese diner that offers satisfying comfort food with pleasant service, Tsing Tao is more than adequate.

I've seen reviews across the board for this place, but it reminded me of my favorite Chinese restaurant from the south suburbs growing up. From the menu to the types of plates they used, it reminded me of my childhood so this is admittedly biased.

Honestly the mooshoo chicken and mongolian chicken were fantastic! Not oversalted or greasy, just light and tasty. The place was packed and feels like it's been around for a long time with a loyal following. I was teetering between a 4 or 5 but have to go back a second time and sample more of the menu.

I have been eating at this restaurant since I was a little kid. I've eaten almost everything on the menu and I've never had anything that I didn't like. Their food is wonderful and they have the best hot sour soup I've ever had... and I've eaten a lot of it!

I've taken many friends and family here and everyone has loved it. They are handy with the tea and if you run out and ever want more, just tip the lid up. The bu bu tray is delicious and the presentation is pretty cool!

I have eaten here a few times since it is close to where I work.  There are 3 areas that I would like to address.  First the service, If I was rating only on service they would get a 4.5 to 5.  They are friendly and while they could be in my opinion a bit more personable, they do well in this.  Second, the food is mearly average, there is absoutely nothing remotely interesting about the food.  I really don't mind the americanized suburban Chinese, but use more fresh vegatables and don't overcook them.  Lastly the decor.  When you walk in this place you feel like you have a doctors appointment.  When you get to the main dining room, it is soo outdated 60-70's that it almost has a quaint kitchy vibe BUT everything is falling apart.  They have a white room divider that is missing parts, the seat cushion in my booth was unattached and moved around during the whole meal and they had supply boxes stuffed under some rarely seated tables right out in the open.  The owners are really nice people but they need to step up and clean up this place.  If it wasn't so convienient to my work I probably would not eat here ever again.

Came here for a luncheon.  Their lunch special was just not good at all.  I mean, I do like cheap, greasy americanized Chinese food, but this place was just plain gross.  I had their Mongolian Beef that came with rice and an egg roll - the Mongolian Beef had a citrus-y flavor to it, and was too salty.  I wouldn't mind if I ordered the Orange Chicken or some other dish when I was expecting it to be citrus-y, but to get my Mongolian Beef with a hint of orange?  I don't think so.  The egg roll was tasteless, and dipping it into the sweet & sour sauce didn't help either.  Wouldn't recommend this place - I don't see how they keep business - for people with no palette, perhape?

Probably deserves more of a 2.5, but I was sorely disappointed so... 2 stars.

The crab rangoons are average.  Nothing wrong with them, nothing special. The Sesame chicken is terrible.  The pieces of checken are small (like fingernail size), the batter is not fresh and it was dry.

The Tsing Tao beef plate (served sizzling tableside) had no particular taste and was forgettable (thank god for hot sauce, which you gotta ask for).

The combination chow mein tricked me by saying "with fried noodles".  You know what they are?? The fried short potato stick looking noodles out of a package or can that people put in soup.  The dish itself was okay, with a white sauce and many vegetables.

    Not going back.

Typical American Chinese for suburbanites. That doesn't mean it isn't satisfying in a fried crunchy sort of way, but I prefer my Chinese flavored with fresh vegetables and herbs rather than frying.
