It's a solid 4 stars...if you have the right expectations. Yes its a chain but only a small local one so each restaurant really stands on its own laurels and I must say they all deliver. My wife and I stopped in after having a few drinks in the neighborhood with only the intentions of getting a few slices to go so it wasn't a full on, sit down dinner. Our wait was a little longer than expected and that was only because there were too many options to decide from. My wife got a greek salad pizza (barely heated up - her choice but didn't want to make the lettuce soggy), I got a plain, a mushroom and a white piece and all were perfectly crispy and very tasty. It's not the best pizza in the area (although still very good), but if you're just looking for a slice or two and can't really decide which kind to get, then you've gotta go here. You won't leave disappointed.
Review Source:This is easily my favourite place to go while in South Orange. Â I actually think about it on the train ride up every time. Â Their vodka sauce is so damn good, it's probably barely legal. Â I'm sure there's crack in it. Â Before our most recent visit, I'd only had it on their vodka chicken pizza (which, OMG, yum) but this time my boyfriend had it on the cheese tortellini and I was totally sold. Â The pasta was perfect - still had a bit of tooth to it and a definite egg flavour. Â One of these days I may try something else as a main course, but I kind of doubt it. Â I've had their calamari (tasty) and the NE clam chowder (disappointing). Â Pizza and pasta is where it's at, for sure.
Side note: they don't serve beer or wine but you can bring your own in.
Fantastic specialty pizza's at a very reasonable price.
My favorite is hands-down the buffalo chicken pizza... With the crumbled blue cheese on top it's mouthwatering. The fried calamari pizza is a fun experience and even there more 'normal' pies are delicous (such as their grandma's pie).
One of my favorite aspects is that they have whole wheat crust and will happily use it for any pizza.
The other food is very good as well. I believe the Chicken Roseli sandwich is a gem. My only complaint was the one time I got the calzone and it was nothing special at all. Not bad, just fails in comparison to the rest of their dishes.
Good selection of slices.
Slices were thoroughly re-heated upon order.
Amazing dough with a perfect, light crisp on the bottom.
Just the right amount of cheese and toppings.
Could have used a tad bit more sauce, but still all good.
Oooh, their own brand of yummy sodas! Delish!
Clean, lotsa seating, high ceilings, simple décor...all good!
Overall great pizza, there 2-3 days a week since I live and work in walking distance. HOWEVER, since it's winter, they need to heat the pizza longer or turn up oven temperature-- slices have been warm/hot, but on warm side when you get something with meat on it. I mentioned it but they haven't changed yet after last 9-10 visits I've been there over past couple weeks.
Great selection, taste, and service.
Looking at the other reviews...I'm thinking I must have gone on a bad night. I had a late night dinner there and ordered the "Kitchen Sink" small pizza. I should have known from the name that it would be kind of sketch, but the toppings sounded delicious.
Pizza was not delicious. The toppings were plentiful but the crust was so soggy. I couldn't lift the pizza up without the toppings sliding off its crust. I ate it with a knife and fork. I was really disappointed. I like my pizza crust crispy and thin and they only got it half right.
I was sad because this place looks like an awesome pizza joint. Still deciding if I should come back and try their pasta/other dishes...
Not sure what others who have rated this pizza high are comparing it to? Â It was probably the worst pizza I've every had, and the worst caesar salad to boot! Â First, the greens for the salad were not so green. Â They looked and tasted old and a bit yellow/brown. Â We got two different kinds of pizza, and the crust tasted like it was pre-made and not fresh. Â much like cardboard! Â Seeing that the majority of the patrons were kids, this place probably doesn't need to have high quality food. Â I don't think we'll be going back to this place again. Â Dominos would be better!!
Review Source:Yum. Â Quick counter service, and they brought the food to our table. Â I had a small Greek salad and a slice of chicken parm pizza. The salad was quite good, the pizza was OK. Â Nice enough atmosphere, very nice prices. Â I think I'll have to try this place again before I can form a solid opinion.
Review Source:Start with the fried calamari-to die for and perfect with a squish of fresh lemon juice.
Next, any pizza, that's right any of their pies are just wonderful. Good crust-not too thick or thin, nice and crisp, perhaps a couple of charred spots for nice contrasting effect. My boys loved the buffalo chicken pizza with hot sauce and bleu cheese sauce drizzled on top. My daughter adored the vodka chicken pasta.
The salads are good, the sandwiches solid, I doubt you can go wrong with any choice. This is the sort of terrific neighborhood spot that any town would be lucky to have. You can stop in and grab a slice or a sub, or sit down and have a nice but casual meal, with waiter service.
The pizza kicks the asses of Bunnys and Reservoir down the street.
I love this place. Â I go to the other one in Maplewood, too, but this is closer. Â Anyway, get the margharita pizza. Â It's just...indescribable. Â I'm in Chicago, and I have not had any pizza in the same parking lot as this one right in Trattoria. Â Just thinking about this makes me want to go back to Jersey right this minute.
Review Source:Very good pizza. I ordered a plain pie and two orders of wings and the food was really good. The wings dont have sauce on them but they provide blue cheese and hot sauce. The wings were light and crispy. They are so good, they can be eaten without the sauce.
The pizza was very good. I am picky when it comes to pizza and saying that I like this one says a lot. The restaurant looked very clean and its cozy. I will definitely come back again to try some pizza with toppings and their hot sandwiches.
They have tables to eat in as well.
BEST. PIZZA. EVER.
Seriously. I had to go to New Jersey, of all places, to find it, but it does exist.
They say hunger is the best sauce but even if I hadn't been ravenous (after three houses of cleaning a dorm room and moving my sister) this pizza would have been five stars.
There were 30 or so different kinds of pizza, most of which were already made, so after a quick minute in the oven to make the cheese all melty I could put it in my mouth. We got this bruschetta pizza with fresh mozzarella, chopped tomatoes, basil, onion, and garlic that came in slabs 6 by 6 inches and probably 3 inches deep. We also tried their barbecue chicken pizza, lightly drizzled with delicious sauce, which also came in a generous slice. We boxed up the leftovers and took it down 95 with us, where the scent was tortuously delicious, despite the fact that we were both stuffed. Â I regret taking the box out of the car, because it was immediately pounced upon by a cousin who swore she wasn't hungry, just wanted one bite, and immediately vacuumed up the leftovers.
I have no reason to be in South Orange until September and this makes me (for the first time ever about NJ) sad. Â
Trattoria also has sandwiches and salad and pasta. Â But for me, it is all about the pizza.
