Even though I have lived in the neighborhood for years this was my first time trying this place.
First star is for the price. My friend and I stopped in and ordered two hot dogs (which comes with free fries) and two Cheese burgers (We were hungry!). We also got free pops all for $14.
Second star is for the guy working there. He was wearing a Cubs hat so in my book that's an automatic star and he was really nice. He was there by himself and he took the order and made the food fairly quick.
Third star is for them having a the lottery there. I was able to get my food and cash in a lottery ticket.
Overall the food was decent (kinda hard to mess up burgers, hot dogs, and fries), but the portions were smaller than normal which why I'm guessing it is super cheap.
I will probably revisit again, but not go out of my way for.
After a long day of attending parties and hot dog craving came about.
I tried to be good all day and only have the light beer or the grilled chicken, but all of a sudden, I have a craving and it's gotta be after midnight.
Driving by this joint, I had to stop after smelling that wonderful greasy goodness. I pulled over, got a dog and fries for a couple of bucks. The hot dog was delicious! The fries were pretty good too. It hit the spot. Not much else to say.
Got a craving, go ahead and satisfy it.
I had to knock off a star for pricing.
They did have a few changes in ownership.
I don't particularly like the burgers but the fries and hot-dogs are delicious.
You might have to wait on the fries but at least they're always fresh.
Overall good place that I've been going to since i could walk with my older brother.
Most recent Yo Joe's experience was very good. $2 for a dog and fries.
Caught without a car it was the only place within a short walking distance.
General issue Vienna Beef correctly dressed. Fries were fresh, hot and tasty. Â
I don't know any details about a change in ownership, but my update awards an additional star for much improved fries!
Skip the burgers and try the cheese-fries and hot-dogs.
Hot-dogs come free with a side of fries. I think everything does.
Fries are thick-cut and delicious! But topped with nacho-cheese is like heaven on earth.
Kinda craving it now and it's only a block away. :]
This place is perfect for late night cravings.
This place is really not very good. Â
They dont have sport peppers or poppy seed buns both of which I like, the tomato chunk on top was green/white with red at the edges (not green like funk but green like unripe).
I kind of like their fries though, they are like half way between McDonalds style sticks and steak fries. Â Not hand cut of course. Â Someone said they love their cheese fries.... if I ever go back that's what I'd try. Â Skip the dog, 1000s of places do it better in this town.
Pro: it is open super late.
Otherwise, not recommended - traditional Chicago hotdog stand fare - but done badly every time I've been there - but worse - the place is dirty (funkier than Wicker Dog) the staff is sketchy looking and seem like the types that might do unwholesome things to your food for fun.
I don't expect a lot from little hot dog shacks. Â I'm not a snob, believe me. Â I was hoping it would replace my beloved (and now closed and torn down) Toot's that was on Central and Montrose. Â But I found Yo-Joes just a little disappointing.
The food is average, nothing great, certainly not bad though either. Â And their ice cream is OK, but nothing too get excited about. Â And this may seem mean, but the only guy working one night I was here had the personality of a stump of wood and seemed pretty creepy. Â As my wife put it, "child molester creepy." Â Maybe it was the word "hate" tattooed across his fingers. Â Very charming. Â It's just no where as good as Toot's. Â And the place seems to seriously need a good cleaning. Â
In the future I'll drive a little way up the street to Wilbur's for my hot dog and chocolate shake needs. Â It's much better food, friendlier service, and very clean.
I grew up around here. (TOO!)
And coming of the bus from Lane Tech I would always buy something to eat on the way home.
I got to say I liked it better when the first owners owned it. (The Polish owners)
The second owners did a terrible job and had disgusting food until the recent owner bought it.
I LOVE THEIR CHEESE FRIES AND PINACOLADA SHAKES.
And the hot-dogs especially when they are a dollar (winter)
I love Mike he's so nice =]
They accept credit cards but it's more like an ATM.
Oh and I have to add Go Cubbies!
Yo Joes was great when Joe, God rest his soul and the girls ran it. Â the new owners do not do justice to the place. Â I have had hot dogs that where fair at best (how do you screw up a dog) and what they call a Tummy Buster holds no justice to the real Tummy Buster. Â I still remeber the one guy behind the counter telling me it weas not his job meaning make hot dogs. Â There are many better places in the area to eat than here! Â Try if dare!
Review Source:this place was a little better back in the day - when they were yellow, now they repainted blue and white, but still rickety little walk through- they used to roll back the prices to 1975 and you can get a dog for like 15 cents. Â shriners sells vidalia onions once or twice a year in their eating area/parking lot for two cars and they had a serious bunch of women that ran the place and got shit done. Â it was great -- you watch them preparing your dogs yellin at each other, through the window while waiting for your order. Â great shakes, fried goodies (shrooms, poppers, puffs, wings, etc) but the best is their dog, vienna. Â i believe the menu stayed the same but the new owners did extend the hours (open til 1 or 2 i think most days) and added a whole bunch of ice cream creations and have specials all the time, like the "winter special" now i think is two dogs for 2 bucks or something. Â not bad for quick bite. Â a hidden gem that deserves recognition solely based on the fact that they're still there.
Review Source:I was raised a few block's from this place. Â I must say that I've only been here 5 or 6 times in my lifetime. Â They serve solid dogs at an average price. Â It's conveniently located on addison, and is easy access for cubs fans awaiting the bus (which is why I'd give it 2 1/2 stars if possible...GO SOX!). Â Nonetheless, it's a nw side institution and deserves some attention.
Review Source:How can you not love this little hot dog stand? Â They have been around a long time, and they're most famous for their cool exterior. Â The outside of the stand has great paintings that show their support for the Cubbies (and now the White Sox) with all these signs and drawings. Â I used to live a few blocks away and I would get a kick out of their "Cubs' Magic Number" countdown sign. Â They serve your standard hot dogs, beef, fries and other great items, including milkshakes. Â They are nice people who deserve our support.
