Laid back atmosphere, above average drinks, nice staff... all in all a pretty good spot for a casual drink.
My only complaints are that its rather pricey (even if they are nicer drinks) and that the signage is terrible (everyone meeting there did the "whoops I just walked past this place" loop into the entrance).
The space thoughtfully laid out and very quaint. Â I like that it feels like a parlor and the attention to detail is superb.
After arriving on a very hot day we stopped for cocktails at this place. Â The bathrooms are very well laid out and are in keeping with the theme of the place, they offer a free phone charging station which was much needed at the time.
We sat at the bar and ordered 4 different cocktails. Â All were really good and I would go back again for a drink maybe on a less busy night. Â We ordered a bar snack which was just eh.
The downside was that there was only one! person waiting on the entire place- he bartended, served tables and food- there was maybe 30-40 people in the and a good deal of the place was occupied. Â
I felt bad for him and was kind of getting anxiety for him. Â We would have stayed for another drink but it was taking too long (understandably). Â Hopefully they'll be better staffed next time, but I would definitely go back for the drinks and the vibe.
Fabulous lounge with wonderful service. Â I was cold so they gave me a wrap (so sweet and noteworthy). Â The bartenders were as personable as the owner. Â One of the owners (the wife) started up a chat with me leading into a compare and contrast discussion of sorts of our recent travels. Â Great first date spot, with comfy couches, perfectly crafted drinks, and a nice dimly lit ambiance. Â Perfect "French 75"(my favorite). Â
Thank you.
Am I taking crazy pills? Â I am reading the reviews of fellow elite's and everyone is hip hip hooray on this place. Â I am going to have to seriously question the taste of my fellow elites on this one.
This place is bizarre...I can only see this place being good if you were British, had just shot an elephant, and wanted to share stories with fellow poachers about previous African safaris. Â This place has such an awkward atmosphere, it is the cross between a study and a room at your grandparents house that you were told not to go into (same smell as well).
The beer list is mediocre at best and cocktails are moderately priced, but certainly not cheap.
There was a nice old woman who was hoping to make sure everyone was ok at our table in between cigarettes...I am assuming she is the owner and I feel bad writing this because she was definitely nice. Â That said, this place will not make it. Â Just a prediction, but I can't see it surviving.
If you are in the mood for an awkward experience and want to drink in a library this is your place...if not I can think of a lot of other places to get a good drink or beer.
The only thing I can say good about this place is that it is different (underlined twice if I knew how to)...but too many times people equate different to good. Â This is not one of those places.
Upon walking into Tippling Place, I thought we had mistakenly ended up in someone's living room. Â Turns out, we were in the right place...whew!
The decor makes you feel like you stepped onto the set of Downton Abbey (sans Matthew Crawley). Â The bar is in the back and you'll definitely be able to find your way back there, as the place is surprisingly well-lit for a bar. Â But then again, we were there kind of early (9:00), so maybe they dimmed the lights later. Â At any rate, I appreciated being able to see the drink menu.
I ordered the Eastside, which seemed to be a popular drink. Â Gin, cucumber, mint...delicious. Â It tasted like something I would drink pool-side if I was at one of Jay Gatsby's parties in the 1920's. Â
The prices are about average for cocktails in the city and they certainly live up to the standards that some of the other cocktail bars in the area have set before them. Â
An amazing addition to the area and one I intend to frequent!
I like you, 1 Tippling.
You always have room for me, it's never too crowded, the couches are comfy, the drinks are cold and well made, and, well, it just feels right.
I think that you've got what a lot of other craft cocktail establishments have been eschewing in favor of keeping more control over the environment. Which, isn't necessarily a good or bad thing on yours or their part. But it IS different. And much more social.
Your doors are always open, there's no one apologizing for lack of space (somehow, there rarely is a lack of space) to seat you, and the staff is very accommodating of you moving to other tables as they open up and your group gets larger.
That said, the environment here is that much less intimate. But, I'm an extrovert, so who cares?
Tippling Place is a spot where you can drink overly complex cocktails and ALSO maybe meet strangers without feeling like you're intruding.
A+ for you, 1 Tippling Place.
Came here to meet up with friends for a drink or 2 after dinner on a Saturday night. Â Was able to get a table for 6 without any wait at 10pm, which was great. Â For our first round of drinks, the waitress was very nice and attentive. Â But after 11:30, the bar became very crowded and it appeared that this place had only 1 waitress. Â It was not her fault, but we were stuck sitting for over an hour without being able to order drinks, or even just to close out our tab. Â Drinks tasted good, and the ambiance was cool, but I think they needed to have more staff on for a Saturday night crowd. Â The waitress was great and very knowledgeable, but there were too many customers for her to handle.
Review Source:An unexpected find. You'll miss 1 Tippling Place if you're not looking for it, but it's no challenge to walk in and grab a seat. If you're going to 1TP, I assume you want cocktails, in which case, they're top notch and skillfully made. Great for sipping and chatting. If you know what you want, you'll have a good time. Personally, we liked the Penicillin and the El Diablo, but I'm pretty sure you'll be happy with any cocktail here.
Additionally, they've got a small food menu consisting of mostly bar-type food, which changes seasonally. When we went during the spring, they had snacky items like bruschetta and cheese. My party was strictly there for drinks though, so I can't speak for the quality of the food. They also do have a selection of wine and beer, though you may have to ask for a menu. The beer selection wasn't actually half bad and included the usual suspects, such as Miller Light, Yuengling as well as some craftier beers, like Dogfish Head Oyster Stout and Woodchuck Cider. The wine menu only lists grape varietals like "Malbec," "Pinot Noir," etc., so you may have to ask the bartender/waiter to specify. (...Or be surprised!)
Speaking of which, the bartenders and waiters were great. This is a great place to go later at night, but be warned that the crowd does build up.
Last night was the perfect opportunity to end a great night, after dinner at Vernick (wow), with a night cap....or two. Â ;-)
A very cozy and relaxing lounge with sofa, comfortable chairs, tables, any mix of seating you want as well as at the bar. Â Looking at the drink menu was a treat, although I am not one to mix anything with my alcohol, so I had a single malt scotch from the very decent selection. Â But my friend tried a couple of different creative drinks and was very pleased. Â
Not being here before, I thought maybe we could have a nice desert with our after- dinner drinks, but they were without. Â Their menu is a handful or two of small-plate type teasers. Â Next time I will try a couple.
Service, drink preparation and special care of my single-malt was superior (chilled wonderfully without dilution).
My brother and I went here for a bit of a nightcap and we ended up having a much better night than we ever intended. We were greeted warmly by every waiter we came in contact with. The bartenders were attentive and made sure we always had a drink in front of us which was amazing given the amount of people there that night. The small plates we tried were amazing and we couldn't get enough of them. The thing that really set this bar apart was the owner. She was more than happy to talk to us about the bar, the drinks and the city which was great because we're Aussies on holiday in the US and we love to hear about that kind of stuff. As for the previous review I saw about the owner 'smelling of cigarettes and being on the sauce' I cannot even believe we're talking about the same woman. I loved this place!
Review Source:This is a great place to grab a drink. My friends and I went on a Thursday around 6 and it wasn't too crowded. They have a great variety of fancy cocktails, beer, wine, and a selection of small bites. I love the decor. The seating is made up of couches and a variety of mixmatched chairs paired with wood tables. If you like brandy the fish house punch is good. I'm more of a vodka gal so I really enjoyed the moscow mule.
Review Source:Been here twice now, about two weeks apart, and I have not stopped recommending it. The first time was for a date, where the subdued atmosphere and quiet background music made conversation easy, while still allowing for plenty of diversion to fill in those awkward first-date pauses. The second time we were a larger group, and the eclectic seating made it so everyone was comfy. The drinks were fantastic, and both times I tried a selection from the seasonal menu and one from the "standard". Niether disappointed. It seems as though this place, being new, is currently getting a lot of spill-over traffic from the Ranstead room, el ray, and Franklin, but with service, drinks, and decor like this - those guys had better watch their backs!
Review Source:We had another awesome visit for drinks last weekend...I really have never had such fantastic drinks before. The flavors are unique, but they meld so well. The punch of the week was our favorite of the night and the bison grass vodka was very interesting (but I don't think I would order a drink with it again). We got there at 9:30 and got a table, but when we left at 11 it was packed and standing room only. Our only wish was that they played a little background music.
Review Source:My husband and I stopped into 1 Tippling Place with our couple friends from out of town, after Ranstead Room had a long wait.
Wow, what a disappointment. And an embarrassment as a Philly native.
Quickly stated, here's why i am never going back,
- They said they wouldn't do a cocktail (that had egg whites), and I quote, because it was too busy. Really?
- Our guests asked if they had cucumber vodka, which was answers with a condescending chuckle and answered, we don't have flavored vodka here. No recommendation, just attitude.
- More expensive than Ranstead Room, had the exact drink at both places, and not as good at Tippling.
- My husband's old fashioned had small ice cubes. Again, specialty cocktail bar?
I sound like a snob, but if you are going to advertise as a specialty cocktail bar and charge $14 for a drink, at least make it good and have an accommodating staff.
I'd skip this one.
While Tippling doesn't quite offer The Experience of Franklin Mortgage that's by design. Like Franklin Mortgage, it's a bar that takes its cocktails seriously, albeit in a more laid back atmosphere. And the atmosphere here is what really sets this place apart. You'll enjoy the living room-esque feel of it all. It's not a pretentious place where you have to, or feel like you have to, dress up. (Don't get me wrong - it's not a dive bar.)
Try the drink named Gentlelady's Buck (rye, grapefruit, lime, ginger, soda). Guys don't be shy! It's good!
A group of us popped in since El Rey was too crowded. Â It was Friday night after a comedy show and all we wanted was a place to sit and a stiff drink. Â There was no signage and we only knew it was open because we could see people sitting on old sofas through the big window. Â "Not another stupid speakeasy." It's not. Â There is no pretentiousness but a very welcoming staff and even friendly customers. Â
The space isn't large but they do have lots of couches and seats and large tables. Â It was semi crowded, but people were kind enough to share their table with us, and after they left, we shared it with another group of drinkers.
I wouldn't go here if I wanted a $2 PBR. Â Go here if you want a great cocktail. Â Plus, they carry Blue Coat Gin, which is my favorite gin (and local!). Â They do have some food but I believe the kitchen closes pretty early.
A great place to catch up with friends, for a nice date, or to just have a great drink. Note, there is no sign but the owner said a new sign is in the making.
PS - I loved their bathrooms with their private rooms.
Tipling place popped my old fashioned cherry.
Came here with a bunch of friends last weekend and had a blast over "interesting " conversations and the heavy duty cocktails that flowed around us. I stopped in here before around HH time and it gets pretty crowded but we were lucky enough to score seating for 10 with no problem.
My first cocktail was the Vesper - if you are a 60 year old aka a person who loves Gin order this drink. Its vodka , gin and a twist served up. Its  very much like me potent and classy all at the same time.
I switched gears to the brown stuff on the recommendation of my boys. "Stop being such a girl" Â and MTFU they yelled ... as i sipped that old fashioned i fell in love.
I think i found my new drink destination and ill be switching gears to the brown stuff more often.
ONE OF MY NEW FAVORITE PLACES IN PHILLY!!
Tippling opened up late last year and has been serving speak-easy style drinks that in my view are better than Ranstead and Franklin. The place has got a nice casual/Old school theme. My fav drinks here are the Penicillin, Old Fashion, and the Manhattan. The bartenders are skilled and very helpful. If you dont see anything in the menu that you like ask the Bartender, they are great in suggesting different stuff. Weekends usually get packed here so get there early. Be careful of the drinks, they dont taste strong but they are VERY VERY STRONG.
Also they have a great variety of exclusive whiskeys.
I LOVE THIS PLACE.
Best cocktails in Philly. I kid you not. Also, really friendly bartenders, and I swear they make the BEST vespers. It's a really friendly, cozy place where you can hole up with a couple friends on a sofa or socialize at the bar. Gets CRAZY busy on Thurs/Fri/Sat nights, so if you're looking to have a private conversation or trying to seduce your date, it might be a bit harder on those nights. I think they're closed Mon/Sun, but the happy hour features some good deals on wine/beer/cocktails
Philadelphia needs more unique lounges like 1 Tippling!
I fell in love the moment I walked in; the ambiance was so warm and inviting. It reminded me of several lounges I once frequented in Cape Town, South Africa, a type of nostalgia I have not felt anywhere else in the city. After discussing drink options with the bartended, I decided to go with the Candy Pop, and I am extremely thankful I did!
This is a fantastic place to sit and enjoy the company of an intimate group of friends. If you are looking for a fast-paced bar to meet people this may not be your best bet, however a great time is guaranteed.
I recently moved into the area, and after getting rejected from Ranstead Room, found myself at 1 Tippling Place. I loved it as soon as I walked in. Nondescript from the outside, and decorated like a comfortable living room. Not very crowded, plenty of seats, interesting crowd.
I was able to score a great love seat and easily stayed for hours. The atmosphere is very intimate, and allows you to actually talk with the people you came with. All of the drinks were great, and we only left when the lights turned on.
Will be back time and time again.
Love 1 tippling place for small group chats at happy hour or starting off your Saturday night.
The inside is very charming! Small interior with an antique feel. The front of the place has a couple separated sitting areas with couches and lounge chairs. The back of the room runs along the bar and has more sitting options around high bar tables. I recommend the front if its open!
The drinks are exceptionally good and you'll get your money's worth (10-12 dollars). Similar to Franklin and Mortgage Investment Company (if  you have not been you should go there as well :) )
Must Have:
Tequila Honey Suckle! Yum yum yum! Strong tequila at first but completely softened by the honey after each sip. Delicious
happy 2013, yelpers!
small crowd but plenty of seats (bold and eclectic furniture choice, but very comfy!) on a random wednesday night. this place is a lot more brightly lit than i expected it to be, but perhaps that changes when the hour gets later and the crowd gets rowdier.
i'm a sucker for anything with bourbon in it, so my eyes were immediately drawn to "autumn in new york" off the seasonal cocktails menu. Â this was easily the best tasting bourbon cocktail i've ever had -- no hint of any bitter or whiskey flavor that is so often the case with strong bourbon drinks. but don't be fooled, just because these drinks are delicious does not mean they're aren't lethally potent. 2 or 3 of these drinks could easily give me a good buzz.
LOVE the staff and bartenders here. friendly, easygoing and attentive. just the kind of people i'd want to interact with when i'm trying to blow off steam after work or on a night out.
highly recommended for anyone who appreciates good drinks and an environment where you can actually see and hear your good company.
It's like having a drink in your rich aunt's living room. Â If she had damn good taste and a massive antique collection.
The decor is wonderful. Â Queen Anne chairs, assorted antique tables and paintings. Â I love that there is literally no sign of any kind from the street. Â Sometimes people will say that and there will be a small logo, but I did not see anything of that sort. Â If you were walking past and the place weren't busy, it truly would look like an antique store. Â
The service was relaxed, but prompt and attentive.
The drinks were just average. Â They had a pretty ambitious menu, but the drinks we had fell flat. Â Everything just seemed unbalanced. Â The other patrons were also very loud for the atmosphere - does no one use six inch voices anymore!?
Cute decor can only do so much - we would pass in the future.
If you want a "Speakeasy" type cocktail and vibe, and can't get into Franklin Mortgage, or don't want the extreme intimacy of Ranstead Room, 1 Tippling Place is your spot. Â
I LOVE how this place is decorated. It is super cute and cozy inside.  There is a small array of various little seating areas of couches, chairs, tables and lamps.  It really has a homey, warm and welcoming  feel to it.
The drinks are amazing and the bartenders are wonderful people. Yes, the drinks take awhile to make (as you should expect with this type of establishment) but boy are they good. Â They really take pride in their craft, and you can see it in the drinks that they make. The Ivy Gimlet is one of my favorites, and they make a damn good Old-fashioned as well. This is my new favorite place for a nightcap drink in the Rittenhouse area. Can't wait to go back!
So many good things about 1 Tippling Place so I'm deciding to make a list to streamline my thoughts:
Decor- eclectic, shabby chic but not dowdy. Cozy couches and tables are scattered in the front half of the place with the bar towards the back. It really creates a vibe of "sit down, chat, enjoy yourself!" rather than rely on TVs to provide the entertainment.
Music- soulful blues and some modern hits too. Not too loud so it's the perfect place for a good conversation.
Cocktails- thoughtful selection of old time favorites and new concoctions. Example, bison grass vodka otherwise known as zubrowka has only been legal in the US for several years. 1 Tippling Place has two cocktails with this tasty vodka. Major kudos. Plus, the fish house punch when first described to me sounded too sweet, but the bartender reassured me that it was a refreshing cocktail. And indeed he was correct.
One thing I wasn't too crazy about- the food. I ordered the pesto and olive tapenade on a baguette. Eh, nothing special.
Grab a date, a long lost friend, or whoever else you think will enjoy a well-crafted drink and bring them ASAP to 1 Tippling Place.
This is not a bad bar but the lady owner is a bit odd. She greeted our group with cigarettes smells & she was definitely "on the sauce". She went on & on about the bar and how she wanted to build a nice bar for the Rittenhouse area.
Lady, we didn't go to this bar to drink with you and we didn't ask for an explanation or history lesson.
Drinks was solid but the owner ruined it for us! :-(
This place is great! Â After seeing the..go figure...long ass line at FM&I, Co. the wife and I searched for a joint to grab a night cap on our whim of a night out in Philly. Â 1 Tippling Place was what came up and we gave it a shot. Â
Well, let's just say, we were very pleased. Â No line and seats at the bar. Â When we went back in September, they had just been open only a few weeks. Â But the crowd was fun and a cool vibe was flowing in the joint. Â The bar tenders had whipped up a great cocktail for my wife and I had my classic Vieux Carre!
Enjoy the comforts of this place and have a great drink too!
You know what - I really like this place. Â Not quite on par drink-wise, quite as cool as Hop Sing but Hop Sing is in it's own realm in that space.
I've been here a few times now and it's perfect to pop into before/after dinner or a show, you don't have to deal with the wait you typically do at Franklin Mortgage and for what I've had their drinks are better than anywhere save for HS.
Bartenders and staff have been engaging each time and it's quiet enough inside to hear others talk, even on weekend nights. Â Much more comfortable than HS or FM&I Co. in my opinion.
Only gripe of this place is that it is perhaps TOO approachable. Â First time I was here a group that was pretty drunk wandered in, got confused by the drink menu (it's all high end stuff), ordered a round of rum & cokes then eventually left after hearing they'd cost more than $7 each. Â Not sure what they can do to get the point across that this is not a typical beer or "single liquor plus mixer" drink jawn but it was kind of annoying to hear them fumble around for 15 minutes right behind me.
I started coming here because of a friend and I have literally been coming to 1 Tippling every week since... So its been like 7 weeks now. Â That is how good this bar is. The atmosphere is so cozy, and clean, and nice, and the staff is so great. Â Anne the owner came over to me and my friends and introduced herself, she is so warm and really wants to make sure everyone is having the best experience possible! It is so nice to have the manager or owner come over and check on you and your party. Â The bartenders are also super funny and charming. Â
Okay the drinks are off the wall. Â Really really well made drinks. Â I must have tried everything or almost everything on the menu and the menu is seasonal and so well put together! Â Fresh ingredients and the bartenders really know what they're doing. Â
Since I have been coming to this bar for QUITE a while, I have seen it progress so drastically! Its been getting super attention, as it should, and it has become a really nice scene. Â Definitely my favorite bar in the city as of yet.
AND they have hot drinks now!!!!
another great reason to try it out.
The first time I stopped by this place, I have to admit that I was concerned. Â It seemed oddly dark and the group inside looked sketchy. Â Honestly, it just didn't look like it would be my scene, so I promptly left without trying anything. Â The other day, however, was such a pleasant experience. Â The lighting was a little brighter and the bartender was warm and welcoming. Â It was not crowded at first, so it was the perfect place to enjoy some quality cocktails with friends.
I started off with a delightful blackberry, rum, and lemon concoction (the name escapes me) that was served quickly. Â After enjoying that, I switched to the Ivy Gimlet (vodka with lime, I believe). Â It was equally as impressive. Â My friends enjoyed a few of their other cocktails and their wine specials that they had for their happy hour. Â Â
I think that the drinks here are solid and the bartenders are well-trained. Â I will say that it did get very crowded as we were winding down, so the atmosphere was not as enjoyable towards the end and the service slowed a little bit. Â I will definitely still come back, though, and I think this is a great addition to our fair city.
For being a new cocktail bar in a city that has quite a bit of popular cocktail bars, 1 Tippling Place really brings a lot of new charm and character into this genre.
We walked in for pre-dinner drinks around 6pm, and were welcomed to sit at any of the many arrays of living room style seating arrangements that we wanted. There are a number of unmatched, worn, comfortable, and kitschy living room sets nestled around this space. It has the feel of being vintage, bought at a second hand shop, or acquired from your grandma's stash of forever old furniture. It has a very appealing feel both in comfort and charm.
The servers were all very attentive, and offered good advice on drinks as well. They have a few menus, for bar food, for beer, for wine, and a larger one for cocktails. The cocktails are neither pretentious or simple. They have a good variety of both classics and unique drinks. I was a fan of the chocolate old fashioned, which, being an old fashioned fan in general, is not really an old fashioned aside from the method used to make it, but is still delicious.
I think the bathrooms have to be mentioned in their own rite. They have single stall rooms, but for a space this small where you might expect one or two stalls, you get 4 or 5 (can't remember exactly), with a really cool communal sink and awesome wall paper that has ladies stockinged legs criss-crossing it. Nothing annoys me more than a big, popular bar where there is one functioning bathroom that everyone is waiting for.
I had the pleasure of meeting with the owners, Anne and Jeremy, who are a lovely couple and very good hosts. They made sure we were comfortable and well taken care of, and also just chatted with us for a while. I wish them all of the best success with their business.
Overall, as Christina P. put it, you have the best of both worlds here. Unlike a lot of the other craft cocktail places in this city, you get a non-stuffy, non-pretentious environment where you can enjoy good drinks and good conversation without having to feel like you're in an exclusive club with dress codes and rules.
1 Tippling place offers the best of both worlds. You get the classy, I'm just having a night cap in my library type feeling of those speakeasy bars, without having to knock on a secret door or abide by rules. This cute little place is tucked away on Chestnut, and the only reason I knew it existed was because of Thrillist. There is no obvious signage, but you can find their extensive cocktail and small bites menus posted on the wall by the front door.
On my first visit (of many to come), we plopped down on the comfy couch in front of the large open window on Chestnut St. The bartender came right over to take our order, and I got the Bramble (lemon, rum, blackberries). He informed me that they were out of blackberries but could substitute some type of grape (don't remember) and it turned out to be delicious! The drinks run about $8-12 each which I think is normal for a good, strong cocktail. You won't find any sugary peach-mango-watermelon cosmorita drinks here. Just simple, one to three ingredient magical creations that you can sip on while chillin in your library. Ok, it's their library, but a girl can dream.
Walked in and was immediately welcomed by a host (Myles - with a Y, I remember!) took a spot near the door and windows. It's a very cute little spot. It's not very obvious that's its a bar, but if you know what to look for, you'll see that it's a chill lounge.
I ordered the Airmail first, a very breakfast-y type of drink, but I really liked it. I would probably order it in a pitcher if I really wanted to get drunk. Then I think I ordered the Rumble, which is just rum, blackberry, and lemon. It was very strong, but VERY good.
We also ordered the Spinach & Artichoke dip, nothing great, but it was something to munch on while drinking.
The hosts were very attentive and decor, atmosphere of the place was relaxing. Definitely a go-to if you want to just drink, talk and hang out with some good company.
Going back whenever I can.
If the unfriendly man at the front door is any indication of what goes on inside, we will pass. As we approached on Friday at 4:28 he was fussing with a swag of fabric on the door. He tried to ignore us but we are 4 tall friendly people & ask when they open. He mumbled 4:30. I said to our group lets wait a few minutes for them to open. Mr. Fussy looks at us, locks the door & disappears. We wait in the late afternoon heat for a while, but he never returns.
We decide to head over to Vernick around the block on Walnut & are warmly welcomed, treated like they are really happy to see us. We drop over $200 for drinks & small plates & we had a really great time. The foods was great & the staff wonderful!
