If Prince once owned this place in the late 80's, you know it ain't wrong.
The party lives on with a spacious dancefloor, great open stage, four dancer cages, plenty of chill space with couches, and a kickass balcony!
I went on a random event night--- with 4 great acts on the lineup---the DJ system is awesome, there are plenty of bars available and you are bound to meet some cool people.
I just experienced this place for the first time when I came for the Monochrome Ball last weekend. It looks like I'll be reiterating a lot of what I see in a few other reviews before mine, but I'll say it all anyhow!
The location is great and the huge lot across the way was, too. It means I only have to scurry a few feet without my coat, as I don't like to tend to it while inside a club. But then I found that WOOP, they have a coat check. Nice going, kids. Not enough clubs do.
I thought the inside was quite lovely. Lots of rich colors and an interesting layout. It fit our event and I imagined that it would suit lots of event types without being too generic, which I think is hard to pull off. I LOVE the gold couches. How can anything squishy be so gold?! The layout felt comfortable- lots of room to dance and also lots of room to linger around the dance floor without being in the way. And the line of windows along the wall in the upstairs dance floor also made for a spacious feel in what is a much smaller room. To boot, the bathrooms were very nice, which I believe is what tells us how the owners really feel about their clientele. So yay!
The big ol' negative about this place is the price of the drinks. I'm pretty willing to pay a dollar or two more than I think I should when I come out. I'm fairly sure that just means I'm getting old (and we all naturally move towards cheapness, just as our ears keep on growing, right?). But we actually gasped when the bartender said $26 for our gin and tonic and Johnnie Walker Black neat. Gin, she says? Maybe it was a fancy pantsy gin. No, just ol' Tanqueray. So no. No, no, no. It shouldn't cost $26. This is our standard order and we are usually gifted with the pleasure of paying with a $20 and not needing change: $18 for drinks and a dollar for each as tip.
My handy little math machine here says that that's a 44% increase. My brain rounds up and says that's twice as much. My mouth tells friends they shouldn't drink here. In fact, when our friends arrived, I told them exactly that. Â So, owners. please just fix this. It's clear, no? You're overpricing things. I'll be very happy to rereview if this is addressed. Until then, I will definitely keep coming back, but I won't be buying drinks.
Overall a good spot and I hope it keeps getting better.
THE BAR IS HORRIBLE! Over priced and horrible selection. I have been there 3 times hoping that it would get better and the last and third time I finally had to say no more. The bartenders didn't know what I wanted and they were out of a specific liquor without having another comparable selection to choose from. Not to mention the drink minimum for using your card. They obviously are not focusing on the patrons that these great clubs bring to them. There are much better alternatives out there. Sorry but I will not go back.
Review Source:REACH OUT AND TOUCH FAITH!!!
CLUB MODE:M
Price: $5.00 RSVP / $10 after 10:30PM
The Music:
It is my favorite due to the fact that it specifically caters to Depeche Mode music and similar styles. It is awesome to hear a ton of DM on the loudspeakers with all kinds of remixes and covers blended into the mix.
The DJ:
Very accommodating and the music flows with a great pace. Not to fast all the time or too slow. They "get the balance right".
The Bar:
There is a nice 2 For 1 drink special for well drinks if you arrive near opening time, however they do get a bit pricy. Only two servers can create a bottle neck experience and service can be somewhat slow.
Dress Code:
The dress attire is usually more sleek/sexy/sophisticated.
The Clientele:
I would like it to be 21+ mainly because of the maturity of the crowd associated with the style of music. Most are enthusiastic about the music and the environment and generally approachable and talkative.
Dance Floor:
One big open space with some dance cages. No real go-go dancers, just brave souls who want to get some extra attention. The floor has enough space for those who do want to dance and I have never had a problem smacking into people or fighting for space. The sound is also impeccable. One of the best I have heard.
Suggestions:
I have would to have video clips of DM videos projected onto the walls while the music is playing. Open a sidebar up top where the patio is to alleviate the rush of drinks.
Summary:
I come from San Diego, and used to drive from Santa Maria just to go to this club. An avid fan of DM I am biased to the music, but it still has to meld with the experience of the venue. It really isn't that bad of a location and I love the dance floor and sound system. By far one of the best I have been able to experience. The people there do create a vibrant atmosphere, but it still comes down to you if you are willing to say, "hello". There will always be the bad with the good, if you feel shut down, you still have plenty of Depeche Mode to dance your woes away.
-Tristan
I came here once and brought a coworker.
Parking is easy, right across the street and $8. Not bad, pretty standard I think.
The dancefloor was large and the place was air conditioned, which I really appreciated.
The go-go dancer locations looked scary to get up to. Someone's going to break their neck.
The reason for the low rating is the bar. The prices are really high and it's not worth it, the drinks aren't that good (AND they're weak). I was warned ahead of time to not open a tab. You will be charged more and possibly a week or two later AND I was warned that they do not provide free tap water, even though it's illegal not to.
We didn't drink much and we certainly would never open a tab. The music was great and I danced most of the night.
The bathrooms are HUGE, stocked and very clean, so there's that.
Fix the bar, guys. Make it reasonable. You have a lot of potential here.
I gave up going to some of my favorite events because they moved their promotions to this venue. Â Why?
1. THE BAR: Â Not only is the bar awful, with a very limited selection, but the prices are well above the standard for venues of this type. Â I am an avid club and bar-goer, and I have many friends in this business - charging $12-14 for a WELL DRINK is ridiculous. Â In addition, there is no way to pay via credit card without committing to a $40 minimum charge, which is ILLEGAL. Â Lastly, getting a free cup of TAP WATER is nearly impossible, and I had to cite specific codes of law in order to get one on more than one occasion, despite spending over $100 on drinks for my group in one evening. Â It hasn't happened to me, but I have also had at least 4 friends who have been charged more on their "tab" than they actually ordered, with no recourse available. Beyond all of this, the mixed drinks are not well made, and the bartenders are rude, which brings me to:
2. Â THE STAFF: Â For a service-based industry, I have never been to another venue with such horrible customer service, rude security, and awful bartenders.
3. Â THE SOUND SYSTEM: Â I don't know if it is the sound system itself or not, but due to concurrent clubs going on either side of this venue, it forces the DJ to pump up the volume so high, that the music sounds awful and you can't even have a conversation indoors at all. Â There should be limitations on volume for each club going on at the same time in a given night and better soundproofing between the walls.
4. Â THE DECOR: Â Meh. Â It is clean and empty. Â It is ok, but nothing that makes me feel any sort of draw. Â
Really, the best part of this place is the bathroom, which is clean and large and the few promotions that occur here that used to draw me out (Mode:M and other LADEAD events) but really can't compete with all of the negatives, above. If these promotions move to a new venue, I'll never miss a week. Â But unless 333 changes their ways, I have ZERO interest in paying over-inflated prices for crappy drinks and rude service.
I'd give them zero stars, if I could.
There are some pros but a LOT of cons for this venue that the owners/management really needs to address and they might see a significant increase in their business.
First off I should say the only reason I come to this venue is for DJ Xian's events namely MODE:M which is AMAZING!!!! Â I drive over 2 hours every month to LA and stay overnight just for the event. I will also say my first night coming at this new venue I burned through $200 at the bar and I walked out of there sober as could be. After that night I decided to stop drinking in the club so this venue has not seen another dime of my money since then because I do any drinking I need to do before I get there and will continue to do so until they correct their issues.
The pros for this venue are the close and reasonable parking which is right across the street at $8 and later it drops to $5 mid way through the night. Very large, well stocked, and clean restrooms. The best thing in my opinion working for this place is a very large dance floor.
Now for the cons which far outweigh the pros.....
1. The door never opens on time every night you wait until at least 15 after until they start letting people inside
2. The drink special they claim to run only runs til 10:30 (which works in their favor since see above you don't get in until 10:15) they do not always have running, or sometimes the bartenders honor it, or one does and another does it. Add on top of that the well liquor they have for the special is very limited as in 2-3 liquors.
3. When you do get a drink the drinks are not only very light on the liquor but they are extremely overpriced even for LA especially for the size. $11 for a well and $15-$18 for a shelf.
4. They have a minimum purchase required for credit card usage which was $40 and if you open a tab you are severely overcharged and it takes weeks to be charged to your card.
5. Bartenders outright refusing to give cups of tap water to designated drivers or just non drinkers even though it is illegal and charging $7 for a water.
6. Always a new bunch of bartenders who don't seem to know what is going on and they are always rude and very slow. Never a consistency in service.
7. There is ZERO staff inside the venue which can be dangerous in situations. Awhile back a rather intoxicated person started a fight and it went on long enough they got up and wandered off into the crowd. By the time staff got inside to find them they had to go searching for them. Had this person done any actual damage this could have been a very bad situation. This is a very uncommon occurrence with the crowd here though, but it would be better for safety purposes. Even if it is doing things as simple as getting spilled drinks wiped up off the dance floor so people do not slip and fall which happens also.
Now I'm not one to complain and not offer a solution so to the owners and management staff....
First of all open your doors on time and get people in on time. When people are inside they are spending money in your business.
Next run drink specials ALL NIGHT maybe not a two for one special but pick something specific. Talk to your liquor vendor and work on buying something in bulk to get a deal on to run the special.
Lower your drink prices to something more reasonable and you'll see more sales. Isn't it better to sell 2 drinks at $8 and make $12 than to sell one drink at $11 and make $9?
Come up with a better system for your tab system. If you continue to screw your customers you will continue to lose them. Is it computerized or are we using paper or what?
Charging for a cup of water? Really? Bottled I understand but cups of ice and water? Come on guys be reasonable.
Start treating your patrons right because we WANT to spend our money with you and we want to bring our friends and tell everyone about the fun night we had, but when you continue to dump all over us why would we?
I wish I could give this place half a star. Whatever you do bring cash!
I went here for the first time for Club Perversion. Perversion is a goth night and have had a blast there before but not at this venue. We walked up to the bar and the bartender was texting on her phone. She looked up at us saw us standing there and continued to text. We waited for a couple minutes for her to finish her text. I should have taken that as my first sign of horrible customer service, and not bought drinks, but alas it was the only bar and bartender....
I ordered my overpriced L.A. drinks and she took my credit card and I.D. to keep my tab open. We went out on the smoking patio which was the only cool thing about the entire place. We went back to the bar where a women was yelling at the bartender about her tab. The same bartender as before (seemed to be the only one on duty) was yelling back, and instead of getting the manager continued to yell at this girl about her bar tab while a HUGE line of people formed to start getting drinks. Once again proof of HORRIBLE customer service. We learned through mutual friends that the bartender had charged her for drinks that she had not bought. All of this was putting a uneasy feeling and bad taste in my mouth so I decided to get one last round of drinks, and close my tab out.
As I proceeded to close my tab the bartender ran my card and said it was declined. I looked at her shocked, and said, "Please run my card again. I know I have money, and I just used it at the store down the street." She said, "Nope it is not going through do you have another card?" and her attitude was very rude. I of course panicking and the rude attitude was getting very upset. She then told me to try the ATM around the corner. I told her to please give me back my card so I could and keep my I.D. She then told me no she couldn't do that because I had a tab open. I looked at her dumbstruck and said, "How the hell do you expect me to get money out then?" at this point I was becoming LIVID. My best friend finally stepped in and told the lady he would give her his entire wallet to hold so that I could get my card back. She agreed to that but also that she had to keep my I.D.
So off to the ATM they had in the club, and guess what? THEIR ATM DID NOT WORK! I freaked out none of us had money, and the only thing I had was a check. After dealing with this horrible customer service for a half hour she finally gets the manager. The manager was pretty chill in comparison and understanding. He let me right a personal check to take care of the bar tab. Needless to say I didn't leave a tip, and it gets better.
With my card not working I called my bank the next morning. They told me that my card had been declined due to a red flag on the companies machine or something (as in to many fraudulent reports from the business or something). My bar tab was $44 they told me it looked like the bartender tried running $44 twice and it was declined and then tried running it two more times at $66. I was livid! That witch of a bartender tried to pocket herself a $20 tip!!
All in all the lesson here is that this is the WORST customer experience I have ever had at a bar in L.A. as well as very shady. If you have to go here for any reason for an event make sure you bring a wad of cash from you and stay clear of opening a bar tab. And if an older Asian women is working as the bartender turn around and walk out immediately.
The Club Event "Perversion" Is What makes This Random Venue Worthwhile
SITREP
I have thoroughly enjoyed the Club Event PERVERSION for a number of years at a series of different venues, and though without a doubt I will continue to follow DJs Amanda Jones and Bruce Perdew's awesome musical & dance experiences they create, I can say without question this is my LEAST favorite venue where I've hit Perversion. Â
THE SYNERGY OF DANCE & MUSIC & LOCATION
It's difficult to promote and host club-events - this I know - and often at times you find yourself just being grateful that you are able to secure a venue. Â Period.
I've been going to this event since 1999 when it was on Hollywood Boulevard. Â There was a stint at Vertigo. Â Then I caught it off of Ivar. Â Now I'm catching it here. Â I'm not a fan of the room configurations because they seem awkward and it doesn't feel well laid out for DANCING, which is the main reason I come to clubs in the first place.
OUTSIDE PATIO
Now, what redeems this place is the fact that it has a very nice outside 2nd Floor patio overlooking the streets where you can relax, chat, smoke, and get away from the decibelage of loud pounding music if you need that break. Â In fact, I'd say that if I WAS a smoker and a constant chatter & socializer (but I'm not, FYI), I'd probably give this venue 4-Stars - so there's that for more complete disclosure of where I'm coming from.
AMBIANCE & MOOD
So what I experience at this venue is ENTIRELY because of the DJ talents of Amanda and Bruce. Â THEY are the ones that create a most transcendent "Twilight Heaven" I experience. Â NOT THIS VENUE. Â
THE LOWDOWN
So while Perversion remains for me one of the longest running club-events I continue to enjoy, I will only patronize THIS VENUE as long as Perversion is here.
How shall I begin... well, 1st of all it's downtown (ish). Â I am not a fan of this other universe. Â And perhaps on this particular evening it was situational... but good god, if i could have been lobotomized I fear it still wouldn't have helped me make it thru the evening.
I was there to support my friend who was playing live in what was masqueraded as a fashion show with "live performances" in between. . .
Now, I would consider myself a rather fashionable and style savvy gal and let me say... what came plodding down that runway at said event should and could ONLY be considered fashion IF 1. you have cataracts, 2. you hail from the Inland Empire and were cross bred with someone from Orange County 3. you still wear Ed Hardy. TACKY TACKY TACKY!! AND as for the "live performances.... save for my friend and one other group. Â I am not foolish enough to believe that lip synching to poorly auto-tuned backing tracks is an actual performance just because you are partially naked and shaking your booty on stage (and ps... DO NOT eat a bag of cheetos if you intend to wear a cropped top and already have a lil more to love).
The weak $12 drinks and lack of wine selection (they only have Chardonnay) also didn't ease my mood.  AND to top it off, the asshole bouncer at  the door with the strange ear muffs and short man's little dick complex...)who would not allow me to go back inside because I followed my friend who had performed outside (CLEARLY she had.... she was carrying around her instrument in PLAIN VIEW)... I hope you get VD.
anyway. Â just a rant. Â I will never go there again and neither should any of you.
AND YES. Redbull and vodka NOT Rockstar and vodka you dolts!
I went here to support Depeche Mode Tribute band, Strangelove. Strangelove were awesome as always. I had never been to this venue before and was totally beyond disappointed. The band was SUPPOSED to be in the main club, but at the last minute, were put in an alternate sh*thole room due to another event. It was a TERRIBLE venue! You could tell the space hadn't been used in a long time! Dirty, dusty, no class, random ugly couches, awful lighting... actually NO lighting! Looked like a garage... and one side of the speakers kept going out during the performance! The bar wasn't even set up! They were setting it up as we got there... WTF? The bathroom was a disgrace too. I'm hearing the main club is supposed to be nice, but I'm not sure I'd ever go back. SHAME on 333 Live for putting Strangelove in that dump when they were supposed to be in the main club! I hope you gave them their money back!!!!
Review Source:I like this venue! The view of downtown is amazing! The patio is awesome! It's clean. I like how the place sort of meanders into different dance floors and areas. Now for the important part. Sound is pretty good here. The dance floor is of decent size & I like that they have a stage & go go boxes along with furniture on the side of the floor. I've heard some people complain about the heavy fog that their machine puts out but I actually like that. The bar is lacking but I don't drink so that didn't bother me. I also like the way the DJ booth is situated in regards to the dance floor. About the decor, it's very cold, modern, concrete. Simple & clean. I actually like it a lot. Some people might complain that it's not the typical themed or over the top avant garde vibe.
Pros:
-Large space
-Good sound
-Clean
-Cool dancing area with lots of seating around
Cons:
-More of a bar you would find at a rave or underground party than a real bar
Came here to support a friend's event.
BAR REVIEW ONLY
The Bar BEYOND HORRIBLE! The bartenders probably have no idea what they're doing. My friends asked for redbull vodka.. again REDBULL and vodka.. not ROCKSTAR and vodka what kind of bar doesn't have redbull.. not only that every single of their drinks were horrible something i would never want to drink again! 10/10 drinks were undrinkable.. also I asked for patron and since i'm a heavy patron drinker I know what my stuff tastes like.. I take the shot and give the bartender a weird look for what I had in that shot was most definitely not patron.. i call the bartender over and all he says is "oh really thats not patron? maybe i got confused.. I'll make sure its patron next time.. man what the shadys is that... the bar minimum is $40 dollars for those thinking in using your card. Drinks are about 15 dollars..
BE READY FOR PRICEY NASTY DRINKS!
If I could I'd give a ZERO! $5 arrowhead water bottle when you can go to the supermarket can get a 24pk. This place is such a rip off. I hope they close down soon. Absolutely horrible. Beer or cocktails are way expensive. This place looks like it belongs on skid row, it looks ugly. All these new young adults that turned 21 are here not knowing this place is a rip off. Please take this review as a WARNING.
Review Source:Pro: Visually appealing club inside and good music (because our friend was spinning)
Cons: Very poor management
Summary: Went to this club with my girlfriend and brother because we were invited by our DJ friend. Â We were on the list but they said guys were $10 and girls were free. Â No big deal. Â So, we get there at 10:15pm to try to avoid the cover which was supposed to start at 10:30 but again no big deal. Â So, when we walk up to the register to pay its cash only. Again, no big deal, we just needed to get money out of the ATM machine that was a few feet away from the register. Â The register was out of service and they didn't have another one so it was going to be a hike a few blocks to get cash.
So, we decided to ask how much for the bottle service. Â The girls at the register said $130 - $150 which included tax and gratuity. Â We decided to go for the bottle service instead of trying to find an ATM. Â So, we told the register girls that we wanted the bottle service and they said that we had to wait for the bottle service girl.
A few moments later the girl came by and we explained that we wanted bottle service. Â I gave her my credit card and ID and she said that she would be right back. Â I thought this was odd because usually they walk you to your table at this point. Â She came back and said that the bottle was going to be $175. Â I explained that I was already quoted a price of $130 - $150. Â She said that was the rate for people that showed up before 10:30pm but now it is $175. Â I explained that we had been there before 10:30pm and at the time I was explaining this to her it was only 10:34pm. Â Yeah, 4 minutes after 10:30 and we were standing by the registers for at least 10 minutes throughout this whole ordeal.
I asked if we could get the $150 price and a Hispanic guy that was standing nearby shook his head "no" as the bottle girl looked over at him. Â We then just agreed on the $175 price and the bottle girl asked for $20 to take us to our table. Â We didn't have any cash but as she was letting us know that she needed the $20 a few of my girlfriend's friends walked in and handed over the $20. Â The bottle girl then took the $20, my credit card and my id and said she would be right back. She came back a few minutes later then walked us to our table. Â
As she walked us to our table she asked which type of alcohol we would like. Â She gave us three choices which Absolute Vodka was one of them, so that's what we chose. Â After waiting at the table for about 20 minutes we wondered where our bottle was. Â We finally saw the girl who sat us and she said that there was only one girl taking care of all of the tables in the club for bottle service. Â We were surprised and just waited.
About five minutes later my girlfriend and I decided to go look for our bottle service hostess. Â When we found her she knew that we were waiting and said that the price for the bottle was $300 and not $175 and she was in the process of seeing if she could do anything for us. Â She said that they don't even have Absolute Vodka or any cheaper priced bottles including the other choices that were offered to us as we were being escorted to our table. Â I was very surprised and explained to her that we already had an agreement with the people at the door and she said yes but there was a miscommunication somewhere and she was trying to get it resolved. Â She seemed very sincere and I felt bad that management didn't step up to the plate and come talk to us about it to resolve the issue.
The hostess came back a few minutes later with the menu and said that there was nothing that she could do and showed us the bottle list, which the cheapest bottle was $350. Â I asked her what happened to the $300 price and she said "yeah, the cheapest we have is $350". Â She seemed pretty burnt about the situation also. Â I asked her if we could speak to the manager and she said okay and walked toward the front door. Â She came back a few moments later and said "yeah, sorry he said that he can't do anything for you".
By this time it was 11:15pm and we had been jerked around for about 45 minutes. Â The club was not packed at all and it's not even a big named club in an exclusive area. Â I was so surprised how crappy the management decided to handle this. Â If they would have said from the beginning that the bottle was $350 we still would have purchased it but because of their shady practices we decided to not give this club our money. Â We were already in the club and just out the $20 we gave the bottle service girl. Â We told the hostess that we were not going to get the bottle service. Â
I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE, I WILL NOT COME HERE EVER AGAIN AND WILL LET ALL OF MY FRINEDS ON FACEBOOK AND ANYONE ELSE KNOW THAT Â I COME INTO CONTACT WITH HOW HORRIBLY RUN THIS PLACE IS. Â
It's so sad how much potential this place has but the management is holding it down. Â There's so many other places to go in LA and Hollywood that have a vibe that is equal to or better for
UPDATE: I spoke to an employee over the phone about an overcharge I had previously written about, they went through all of the receipts and voided it. They apologized profusely, so all is right in the world. Kudos to them for stepping up, they won me back.
The club is nice (clean bathrooms, great sound, good venue and plenty of seating), though insanely crowded (you'll be waiting a while for a drink).
BRING CASH. $40 credit minimums and slower processing will give everyone around you a headache.
Arrive early is my last bit of advice, the line gets long (at least for Rhonda Fridays) at about 10.
If I can I will give this place zero stars *** we went here to celebrate NYE with bottle service...and they tread me and my party like shit. They offer the worse service and the staff and a bunch of idiots, a guy with glasses comes over our table and snaps his fingers to get out because they gave us the wrong table, like it was our fault. Again, idiot staff that can manage things. They threatened us and moved us upstairs....worse service ever!!!! I do not recomment anybody to go here, spend your money somewhere else's...
Review Source:I guess they replaced Tatou, which used to be here.
Came for the Halloween party on Saturday night, which I will have to admit was pretty much all Asians. Â Took forever and a day to get to our table, mainly because the line takes forever (as pretty much expected) as well as some kind of mix-up. Â If I didn't have already know a promoter friend that took care of everything for me, I would've probably been yelling at someone after waiting for 10 minutes.
I've never been to the old place, so I can't pass judgment on what it used to be. Â Some things were fine...big enough dance floor, plenty of tables all around the venue. Â I'll give em credit with the DJ because they played a lot of house music/good hip-hop, so I have no problem with that.
Major problems however: Â only two bars, one upstairs and one downstairs. Â On top of that, a 30 minute wait for booze. Â I swear I sobered up before I actually got my drink (because we ran out of booze at the table).
Location is good and bad at the same time. Â Good because the parking lot is right across the street. Â Bad because it's in the middle of nowhere in Los Angeles, surrounded by a bunch of office buildings. Â Pretty sure this is hardly the first time this was mentioned, but I'll leave it here.
In any case, if my friend didn't have the hook up, I wouldn't have come here...simple as that. Â But it was a decent night and I had fun, so I'll give credit where it is due.
