I've been here twice and have been pleased both times.
Environment:
The ambiance is pleasantly sophisticated, but not overly so. The brick walls and wood tables add a classic element that is urban, but comfortable. There is usually a crowd, so getting their early helps if you're going to be meeting a few people there. If I were to knock off a star, it would be because of how crowded it can get, but I don't really mind it, and find that you meet people faster that way. I haven't been there when there's live music, but intend to.
Wine:
Since I've only been twice, I haven't had a chance to try the entire menu, but they do have a wide variety to choose from. I've indulged in the $5 specials, one a Tempranillo, and the other a Cab Sauv, both of which I wrote the names of because I liked them so much. Great value.
Staff:
Staff is knowledgeable and friendly, but not intrusive when it comes to service. That balance is big for me.
Food:
Haven't tried the food yet, but will venture to guess I'd be happy with it.
coming to 5 Walnut almost every night of our week long trip to Asheville was a definite highlight. the staff was friendly, the bar was intimate and packed with people really enjoying the atmosphere and music.
it is (sadly) very difficult to find a venue that offers music 7 nights a week, so that alone garners a five star review.
delicious and affordable beer, soulful music and a wide variety of ages supporting the artists "on stage".
if we lived in the area, i know we would become regulars in no time.
So some friends were up at the "nut"...sorry I don't mean that in a bad way...just something a few locals call it.
There is live music just about every night and this evening was the "Big Nasty" band...very fun and fun was had by all.
If you want to people watch...this is the place to do it. Â Plenty of locals and tourist
And as usual I "heart" the barstaff...so nice and they know what I drink.
Great time.......just like every other time..........
Stopped in for a nice glass of wine and a little snack. This is a nice local place and was fairly crowded when we arrived. So it took a bit of time to get service. Great prices and specials on the wine. The snack we ordered was a little skimpy for the price, that would be my only drawback here.
Review Source:Loved this spot! Â Was it because of the live music on a Friday night? Â Or the fact that we had great seats in the open window watching the people wander around Asheville on a cool Fall night? Â Or was it the friendly staff behind the bar?
Whatever the reason, I was glad that 5 Walnut was my first stop during my recent trip to Asheville as it set the perfect stage for the rest of my weekend.
We got here late but the place was jumping- plenty of people indoors and spilling out onto the street in a comfortable way. Â The decor is simple, the beers are cold and the bathrooms are co-ed (never my fav but it worked in this instance) but it is the friendly people who really make this place special.
Next time you are in town- stop by and "sit a spell". Â Oh- and if you are there and are hungry- there is the fanciest hotdog vendor I've ever seen selling dogs just across the street. Â The guy looked like a banker in his dress shirt and pants. Â Oh well. Â It's Asheville . . . . where anything goes!
This is my new tuesday night spot to pregame the Funk Jam at the Asheville Music Hall.
The wine selection is superb, as is the beer selection. Â They offer snacks like fresh baked pretzels and French Broad Chocolates, but I usually just get a glass or three of wine. Â My favorite aspect here is the music! Â They have some great jazz on Tuesday nights by "The John Henrys" and also some classical spanish on Wednesdays. Â It gets really packed and the crowd always spills out into the street for dancing...its pretty crazy.
Any afternoon or evening its a great place for a quick drink and people watching on the streetside windows. Â
A definate must in this town!
Very cute wine bar on Walnut Street. Love the open feel, natural wood tables, nice restrooms, and good selection of wine (and beer). Â Wouldn't order the pretzel again (scrawny, but served with Lusty Monk mustard). Â If the weather is nice, the windows are open which allow for great people watching. Â If not, the place is warm and cozy, a bar you can definitely see yourself enjoying on a cold night
Review Source:This is one of our favorite hang outs in Asheville. Â The atmosophere is great and they have a wonderul wine selection as well as beer. Â
We do not usually get food here, the menu is just finger food and seems like just an extra. Â It is great to hang here, with all the windows open to the street.
The bar staff is always very pleasent.
We stopped in here Friday night before heading to a friend's rehearsal dinner for a quick glass of wine. Â This spot is all Asheville. Â Laid back atmosphere....dogs laying on the floor....girlfriends catching up over hummus & wine with one of their children...tourists and locals alike. Â Daily specials....a great wine list and just a fun vibe. Â I def have this on my list of recommendations for those heading to this mountain town.
Review Source:As their website states, "Our philosophy is simple -- Keep It Fun, Keep It Friendly." 5 Walnut Wine Bar offers wines at the $5-$15 per glass price range, as well as six local tap beers, and light appetizers from local businesses. Even the décor and furniture are made by locals. I elected to try one of the local beer offerings, the Catawba Valley Brewing Company White Zombie Ale, a Belgian-style white ale made with coriander, orange peel, and wheat. Yummy!
Review Source:We ducked into this place after walking around looking at all the shops. I was more in a beer mood and ordered some Asheville Ninja Porter. I was very impressed with offerings of local snacks and drinks. I decided to try some trout jerky too. It was very good. Places like this make me want to just stay in Asheville forever and ever! The bar attracted me with open windows to the street and the sort of laid back yet modern feel to it.
A random rain storm came crashing through as we were there and I can't think of a more perfect place to wait it out. We got to hear it and see it live while being safely tucked away from the rain. Totally awesome!
My friend and I were visiting from Washington, DC and were so pleasantly surprised to stumble across this spot. What a gem! The service was lovely, the white wine chilled to perfection, and the seating next to the open window was divine! What a perfect spot for conversation and people watching. Highly recommended!
Review Source:Great, Great, Great place to go and get "stinky" on a Sunday afternoon. Â I love the open window seating for people watching. Â The bar area is fantasic too. Â The bartender was friendly and we sat and BS'd with her for quite some time while we enjoyed an afternoon of bubbly. Â LOVE THIS PLACE!
Review Source:This has become a "go to" place for my wife and me when we go out for a date/dinner. We get a pre-dinner drink here. The wine selection is great but a nice unexpected pleasure is their selection of local beers as well. Â Last time they had the Pisgah Bacon Stout. Â Never expected to see it outside the brewery walls. Â Intimate, Â often some live music. Â Cool place.
Review Source:We came in to towm for a visit (there's a chance we might move here) and we had a drink here. Â The atmosphere was warm, inviting..they were having a tasting from 5 to 7 which I'm sure happens a lot and they had some nice $5 dollar wine deals.
Bread was warm and fresh...the guy did bring us a skuunked wine from his "nitro" thingy but readily replaced it when we told him.
