Anong Thai is a great Thai resturant in an excellent location- right by the California Blue Line and steps away from Logan Boulevard.
Their pad thai is arguably the best in the city- cooked to perfection and the perfect mix of sweet, salty and spicy (which you can request- I usually get mine as hot as possible) and citrusy with a little bit of lime.
While dining in is nothing special, it makes for a cozy dinner spot and you can BYOB. All in all, this is a Logan Square gem that keeps me coming back.
2 years ago, this place was great, everything fresh. 1 year ago, this place started to lose its edge, most appetizers became deep fried. Now there isnt anything worth it left. I used to go for the Tom Yum Noodle soup, it was very very addicting. Now its no better than most thai places. Its very sad to see this place lose the vibe they had.
If you DO go, eat there. Delivery is an unpredictable nightmare, and carry-out leaves a lot to be desired. The portions are significantly smaller when not eating in. I went as far as to ask them for the "eat-in" portion, but to go. Their reply was "the containers dont fit as much as the bowl". I asked for 2 containers, she said she would "see what they can do". I received one container. Not a big deal I guess, but you would think that it would have been full.
Anong is my go to Thai place. Â It's basically your standard Thai food, but it's always hot and super packed with flavor. Â Crab Rangoon, spring rolls, pad thai, and pad see ew are my favorites. Â If you live in the area, this is the place to go for tasty cheap Thai food. Â BYOB if you're eating in.
Review Source:Well, not sure what happened here. We used to order from them quite a bit. Â Placed and typical order with them....one hour thirty five minutes later after calling three times only to be told the driver was on the way...no one ever showed and their response was...silence! Â Â They had no idea anything about the order and couldnt answer as to whether they had or knew about it. Â There was no we' re so sorry. How can we make this better, or anything! Â Super lame customer service! Â When i told her id probably never order from them again because of the way it was handled she just oh ok.... wow. Â Ok? Â Not how you win customers and stay in business. Â Good luck if you order from here. Â Hard to say what will happen. Â Super lame!
Review Source:I have surprisingly never eaten in this place, as I'm super close, but I get takeout all the time (probably too often) from here. The food is always good (and hot), and gets here in under 30 minutes (I think the fastest has been 17 minutes, and the delivery guy *apologized* for the wait, as though that was a long time).
Pad Thai is good as are the Panang noodles, and the crab rangoon and veggie egg rolls are solid. Can't really go wrong here. It's standard thai food and for the price they give you a lot of food.
Very, very solid Thai takeout in my experience. Â And I've had a lot, since I live 2 blocks away. Â
Have had, would get again: Â crab rangoon, chicken satay, pot stickers, pad thai, egg noodle kee mao, panang curry, panang noodles, basil chicken (I said I eat here a lot, gosh).
Meh: Â lumpia, papaya salad, bamee noodles.
Friendly staff. Â They don't judge me when I order delivery (see above).
Anong is my neighborhood go-to for Thai. It's dine-in area is nothing to write home about, but it's good for a casual lunch with a friend. Also, they're BYOB (and right next store to Providence Wines!), which is a major plus.
Where they really earn bonus points for me is their online ordering/delivery option. It doesn't get much easier that perusing their menu online and being able to pick up 15 minutes later, or have it delivered hot and fresh within the hours (in fact, I'm usually surprised by how fast the delivery is, thoguh I *do* live really close).
Their food is consistently good, and their staff is always friendly and helpful. I order from there more often than I care to admit.
I live about 2-3 minutes away - so the location is fantastic for me. But even before my move, I would travel from the Gold Coast to Logan Square JUST for their pad thai. I'm a huge pad thai fan - and theirs is amazing.
I haven't ever tried anything else because I'm such a big fan... but once I do I'll update my listing.
Other notes: No AC - but now that the weather is cooling off it's not a problem. Service was pretty standard... not fantastic but not terrible. Pricing is reasonable, too - and the pad thai usually serves me for 2 meals, which is awesome. It's pretty spectacular when reheated, as well.
Attention, Chicago! Â You may know me! Â You may not know me! Â But whoever you are, all y'all have an open invite to slap me good upside the head for the fact it took me a month of living five walking minutes away to get myself to Anong Thai.
I can't really speak for service or for variety, because I've only ever gotten takeout or delivery, and the heck does this anglo-ass white girl know about thai food (other than it's pretty dang delish)? Â The hostess when I was in seemed a little harried, a little stand-offish, but nice enough.
But I what I do know is that it's now 8pmish at night and I've got three empty pad thai containers littering my coffee table (after the one order I got to go earlier in the afternoon hit the spot so well I broke and got two more delivered via grubhub) and, for the first time since before the calorie-reserve-sucking hipsterfest that was Lollapalooza, I feel properly and satisfactorily well-fed.
Like I said, I can't really speak for service or authenticity/variety, but if you're looking for somewhere with cheap, good thai food for speedy delivery or takeout, Anong Thai's your gal!
Anong Thai is a quick, excellent stop for Thai food in Logan Square. While I always stick with my favorite--pad thai with tofu--no matter what Thai restaurant I go to, Anong is one of the best. I've only had delivery here (hence the 4-star rating) but I always receive my food in a decent amount of time and it's never too expensive. And like I said, it tastes amazing!
Review Source:I really really want to love this place. Â It's steps away from my apartment, reasonably priced, and the takeout is usually pretty speedy.
However, the service here is usually...lackluster to be generous.. Â The last time we went in, we were greeted with an unenthusiastic "What do you want?" from our server.
Also, there's no AC. Â In July. that's a problem.
My advice? Â Order takeout ahead and get the curry. Â The curry's pretty bangin'.
Took out a to-go order today.
Things to know about me: I am not a picky eater. I eat appropriately portioned food. I enjoy Thai food.
The not so good:
I had the bahmee noodles, because I figured I couldn't go wrong with egg noodles and bbq pork. Wrong. It was flavorless. The pork was tough and dry and the wonton on the side was stale, chewy, and tough. Also, the to-go portions seemed kind of small. When I get ~$7 of noodles (at cheap places like this) I usually have left overs for another meal.
The better half:
I also got a custard and thai iced tea.
The custard is sweet and the texture is very good, but the flavor isn't super interesting (just sugary.) Still it is worth getting if you eat bites of it over time.
The thai iced tea is very good, but also VERY sweet. Also, if you ask for it to-go ask for less/no ice.
If I decide to try it again: I might go for a low spice curry, panang, or pad kee mao.
Food for thought: I think their appetizers and soups might be better than their main dishes. So perhaps it is better to make a meal out of those?
I ordered delivery from this place with a major hangover and the idea that noodles would make everything better. Usually it works. Today, it did not.
I ordered pad khee mao and pad see eiw as well as crab rangoons (hey, grubhub has a minimum dollar order). I love pad khee mao when it is done right. These are not done well in my opinion. The salt was over powering. I did not taste any basil. Usually it's a little sweet and the spicy makes for a great combo. I really didn't taste any spiciness. The eiw was much better. Which is strange, because I don't normally choose to eat this dish. However, I got ripped off on the broccoli. There were only three pieces, man.
The rangoons were just okay. Those were also a bit salty and even though it was imitation crab, there were large chunks of that in there. Not the best I've ever had, but not the worst either. I Â just get so sad when a restaurant uses too much salt in everything. Now I'm hungover, dehydrated, AND bloated. That's not right.
The thai iced tea was pretty good. Not too sweet, and nice and cold upon arrival. Next time I'll ask for easy ice. I pout when my drink runs out too quickly.
This place does delivery Jimmy John's style. It's freaky fast.
Oh, Anong. I really wanted to like you, but my first experience was unfortunately less than stellar.
Dinner started off well. We were seated, and decided to order some apps to start off with. My date ordered the Egg Rolls, and I got the Tom Yum Soup. Even though I'm not a big Egg Roll gal, I did have a taste and liked them. However, the sauce was key. My Tom Yum Soup was a bit too sour for my pallet, so I don't think I will be ordering that again. I did get a fabulous Thai Iced Coffee, though! Recommend.
For the main course, I ordered the Basil Fried Rice with Vegetables. It tasted good, but it was definitely missing something. It didn't hit either of us until my date pointed out that there wasn't any Basil in my rice. Ummmmm, what? I was a bit taken back because it was a pretty crucial element of the dish, I mean come on it's in the name. I was a little more peeved because the restaurant was not busy at all, so they couldn't use that as an excuse.
I eventually pointed it out to the waitress, and she asked the cooks. They said that they "might have forgotten." She apologized and told me to ask them for "extra Basil" next time I come in to ensure they will add it. SIGH. Why would I ask for extra Basil next time, when the cooks didn't even remember the regular amount? She didn't even offer a discount or anything, either. Double SIGH.
Sadly, a pretty mediocre experience all around. Since it is my partner's favorite Thai place (ever), I have a feeling he will be determined to make me a believer. Until then, 3-stars is where Anong is at in my book.
oh curse the lack of half stars. This would be firmly at a 3.5 for me, but as is it just doesn't push into that 4* level. But, anong thai is still very good.
I ordered for pick up from here. The food overall was pretty good, but a bit variable. I ordered the pad khee mao for my main. I asked for it to be spicy and I was happy that they didn't dumb it down. The noodles were very good, but I did want them to be a little bit better. The chicken was also very good, but it was a little dry.
I also got a chicken satay and a shrimp shumai for appetizers. It was weird as the satay didn't have a skewer in it, but it was real good. The shumai was exactly what I expected it to be, which is just fine by me.
The prices are very good. I was able to get all of the above for about $18ish. I used the online ordering and it was pretty easy. But, it didn't have a future order option, though all I had to do was write down when I was going to pick up the order.
Dig it. When the place was taken over from the other owners, I cannot recall the name of the old restaurant, I was pleasantly surprised to see the place opened up as it was so dark before.
Anyway, to the food. Solid Chicago Thai fare. Traditional known dishes. Everything is made to order, I like that. Nothing really distinctive about the food but it has always been consistently flavorful and fresh. Comes straight from the kitchen which is literally 5 feet away. I always see the Thai grandmother and grandfather figures cooking so I trust the dishes.
Pot stickers are great. Noodle dishes are perfect. Awesome Thai iced tea. Curries are above average for the price. At less than eight bucks an entree you cannot expect much more.
Again, dig it.
The Tom-yum soup was a bit of a disappointment, it was flavorless compared to other Thai restaurants I have been to. My fiance really enjoyed his fried rice noodles. Kudos for being BYO.
It is a good neighborhood spot if you are not in the mood to trek up north for better Thai (in my opinion).
Really the only reason we order Anong anymore is because it's close enough that we can walk and pick it up. Â It doesn't taste fresh to me anymore. Â When we break down and order it I almost always regret it afterwards. Â Typically what we will order is pad thai with tofu and red curry with tofu. Â They always start off tasting OK, but by the end of my meal I feel gross. Â
Having said that I wish I could give this place 2.5 stars. Â It's not quite a three, but it's better than 2.
Also, the staff is very nice and they prepare your food very quickly. Â Takeout orders are always ready in 10 minutes.
Pros: Super cheap, super close to where I work/sorta-live, super nice people work there
Cons: Super inconsistent food. It's either not bad or not eatable. For being a little chick, I eat a ton and always clean my plate and have room for seconds, AND my mom is a bad cook so I can and will eat pretty much anything and it doesn't offend me. Howevs, I too often find myself tossing half my takeout (and I hate to throw away food). I'm pretty disappointed because I love Thai food and this is so convenient to get to. Maybe dine-in is better, since I only get carry-out, but I've almost just written the place off unfortunately.
Everything you want from your neighborhood thai restaurant. Â Fresh, delicious, and well-priced food, fast service, and a clean and comfortable dining area. Â
I had the best pad kee mao I've ever tried. Â The Tom yum soup was good. Â And my brother enjoyed his fresh vegetables and rice. Â
I will definitely be back again.
1 1/2 STARS -- I used to like Anong Thai. Â Any Thai food craving, I've had over the past few months has been satisfied by Anong. Â They deliver quickly. Â Liked that especially. Â
One day, the boyfriend and I were walking around the neighborhood and decided to eat at Anong Thai. Â It was my birthday so I had a choice over where we got to eat. Â I really wanted Thai so we stopped by. I regretted it. Â Spent the rest of the evening not too far from the porcelain throne. Â UGH!!!! so DID NOT FEEL Â GOOD. Â I really should take their rating down to 1 star, but trying to remain optimistic for the other times they've been good to me. Â I felt really horrible after that meal. Â I really TRULY TRULY TRULY was upset. Â It was my birthday and I did not want to spend it with the aftermath of a bad meal. Â What a way to spend my birthday night, huh? Again, I was really upset. Â
Needless to say, I haven't been back since. Â Can't take another chance. Â I regret wanting to dine there for my birthday when I could've gone to any of the MILLION AND ONE restaurants in Chicago. what a waste.
Is Anong the most authentic Thai experience in this city?????
...i have no idea. But they do have a great pad thai, good curries, good fried rice, you can get tofu on everything, and it's cheap. Â BYOB, of course - Brett showed up with a messenger bag full of Old Style once and it was the coolest thing ever.
They also deliver, but I live so close that I feel like a loser every time I get delivery. Â Usually when I call to order for pickup, they tell me my meal will be done in 10-15 mins. One week I ate here four times. Â It's more than passable and plenty of veggie options. the proximity to my house doesn't hurt either. Â I wouldn't travel far or go out of my way for Anong, but for a neighborhood joint it fits the bill perfectly.
Being that I live a mere 5 minute walk from this establishment, I have ordered takeout a number of times (they are super fast!) -- always opting for the mixed vegetable stir fry with chicken. Sometimes this dish has a strange, almost pungently astringent smell to it; it's not very appealing and I don't know what on earth would give it that smell. It doesn't make sense. Nor does it make sense that I ignore said smell and eat every last bite.
Veggies are abundant and very fresh, and the chicken is white meaty goodness. I can usually finish an order in one sitting (no leftovers), but it could easily make two meals if I didn't shove it in my mouth so quickly (that's what she said). Â Not bad for $8.25.
It's just .... funky sometimes.
We had been sitting at our computers working all weekend, so there was no time to cook. We figured we'd get dinner from a place we hadn't tried before - Anong Thai.
The food arrived very hot. I had pad kee mao with tofu and no egg (as I'm vegan). It was pretty standard. The noodles seemed slightly mushier than I usually have, but it could be due to it being delivered. There was plenty of heat between the jalapeños and the red chili sauce that was served on the side.
The Tom Kha soup with tofu tasted delicious, but I'm not a fan of the texture of silken tofu chunks. The soup had plenty of sliced lemongrass to complement the creamy coconut milk.
I saw they had sticky rice on the menu. I will definitely try that next time.
Overall a good option to have in the neighbourhood.
I love going to Anong. Partly because it's so close to home. The other part is consistency in service. Whether it's take-away or dine-in I am a big fan. The last visit we had the chicken curry and I had the egg noodle kee mao with chicken. We've had the pad thai (excellent) before as a take-away and it was great.
Delicious! Spicy. And fresh-tasting. Not just the ingredients, but the food never feels heavy. You can tell it's prepared fresh and doesn't have a chance to sit around.
The place is small -- maybe 10 tables -- but cozy and easy to hold a conversation without a megaphone. The service this night was attentive even with one person serving 6 tables plus managing take-away.
Total came to $18 pre-tip for the two of us for entrees. We brought our own stiff Merlot which goes well with the spicy grub. Parking's a bit of a challenge but not impossible. But it's worth it.
Okay, so I've eaten here three times now--two 3-star experience, but my latest was 5 stars all the way. Pad Kee Mao, tofu, all the way. Â I love wide rice-noodle dishes, and the sweet basil and chili is my favorite flavor combination.
I'd tried a few things off the menu, and a few more from my boyfriend's plate. Â They have been okay, but a little off. This dish is right on.
I craved it the next day but wasn't in the area. I stopped at Sweet Tamarind to get the same dish.. eh.. greasy.
(note: all have been for take out or delivery. Â They are really, really fast)
I was skeptical when this place opened in the former location of the mediocre Sai Mai, sporting a seemingly identical menu down to the typeface. Anong, however, is a far superior restaurant. They serve hands-down the best crab rangoon I've tasted, containing actual discernible chunks of crab, which is probably fake, but who the hell (outside of Burma, maybe) puts real crab in a rangoon anyway? There's also some celery in there and some hard-to-identify but delicious seasoning.
The real test, the pad kee mao, is where Anong shines. After learning of Super Star's demise, I despaired of ever finding a palatable pad kee mao in Chicago, but Anong's is almost as if not equally good. There's just something about a top-notch pad kee mao that unifies the flavors and turns it into a special experience. For crying out loud, it was even good when I accidentally ordered the egg noodle kee mao, which features thin, spaghetti-like noodles, instead of the regular pad kee mao, whose wide rice noodles are half the point for me.
My girlfriend wakes up in the middle of the night now and then, jonesing for their Mussaman curry. While I don't find it quite as rapturous as she does, I'll testify that it's quite good.
I'll be brief: Â I only ordered two things. Crispy spring rolls and Curry Beef Fried Rice. Â I don't get too crazy when ordering at a new place. Â The spring rolls were good. Â They were crunchy and flavorful. Â A little greasy, but that doesn't bother me. Â The Curry rice... ugh. Â It was DRY... make you drink a glass of water to wash it down dry. Â
The staff was nice & polite which goes a long way. Â Unfortuantely, I won't go back there. Â Too bad bec/ I live in the 'hood and want to support local restaurants.
Weird, I don't get all of the reviews. Â I mean, it's not the greatest Thai, but there's only few places that really exceed expectations (Thai Aroma, obviously). Â However, Anong has great food! Â I have seriously never ordered anything I didn't like and all of the appetizers we've sampled have been tasty. Â
Lately we've been getting take-out because we're too lazy to eat-in but too lazy to cook at home. Â It's a nice two block walk from our apartment, so the pick-up is super convenient. Â Every time I've ordered over the phone, the estimated pick up has been 15 minutes and they've always been right. Â They take credit cards and cash on pick up (convenient!) and the food is always nice and piping hot when we get it back home. Â Seriously, it's delicious.
I noticed in their window that they are now officially BYOB which pleases me greatly. Â I will be in there soon with friends to have some good Thai food and a nice bottle of wine. Â I love BYOB, especially when it's right down the street. Â I'll keep going here because everything is tasty and the service is friendly.
Sorry guys but only order if desperate for thai.
1) took 1 and a half hour to arrive so obviously it was cold.
2) crab rangoon tasted like it was frozen/freeze dried
3) veg egg rolls were weird
4) pad thai was bland
5) panang curry was ok but mostly bland flavor-wise.
And then I got diahrhia.... sorry if that's too much information!!!
My friends and I just noticed that this place reopened. Â One day it was just closed, which made us wonder. Â But that ended up being good because we found other great Sunday brunch/lunch locations in the area. Â But I digress.
So, sadly, we never knew the old name to the place, it was just "that Thai place" across from Starbucks. Â Since Anong is now open, we decided to venture back and add it to our Sunday rotation. Â We've always dined in, so I noticed immediately that the place looked cleaner, but I didn't notice too much different from the old place. Â Our server was very friendly and the service here is quick.
I ordered the Pad Kee Mao and it was good, I've had better, but it will do. Â My friend's red curry was great, though. Â I'll definitely order that the next time. Â I didn't try it, but my friend ordered the spring roll and had to send it back. Â She said it didn't taste fresh. Â They promptly made her a fresh one to go. Â Hopefully that one was better.
So anyway, a good, solid contender when we want to switch it up from brunch. Â It's good food, great price, and any place with $1 Diet Coke is my friend.
