You can't beat the prices for the amount of food you receive. Â I have had several items from the menu, the ribs, chicken, steak, all excellent and they have the freshest salad. Â The olives and warm rolls are a bonus! Â The cappucino is the best that I've had, smooth, silky and excellent taste. Â This is the best place to eat or take out from for a family who is watching expenses. Â For the amount of food they give you, it doesn't pay for me to cook for my family!
Review Source:Got takeout here again, and ordered the same thing--BBQ chicken with black beans and yellow rice. This time the chicken was pretty dried out, and the rice was undercooked.
I'll be sticking to Planet Chicken in Dunellen from now on, for more consistently juicy BBQ chicken, which is prepared in their marinated Peruvian style, rather than the generally more cooked-to-death style found at the ubiquitous Portuguese joints.
Ordered lunch for the first time today and what a Disappointment!! Â Garlic in Shrimp
1. Â Veins were left in the shrimp
2. Â The shrimp were extremely small and only served 12, if that
3. Â The rolls were thrown in the plastic bag and stale
4. Â It was as if the french fries laid in grease until served
For what they charge I would expect bigger size shrimp or more of it because that is some expensive rice. Â It is there way or no way. Â If you can get Chicken and Ribs Combo, Why can't you get Chicken and Shrimp Combo? Â I have been to many Portuguese BBQs and I will have to say that I will take the drive and get my money's worth next time..
The rolls and olives they serve to start are a nice touch, and the portion sizes are fairly generous, though not crazy. Â Overall I would do takeout from here, but wouldn't eat in the dining room again. Â Our waitress was terrible, really terrible. Â I asked her for extra napkins and it took 15 minutes. Â She had friends in and ignored us to talk to them, look at pictures, etc. Really annoying.
Review Source:I was in the area for a business and looking for a quickie lunch place. Â I couldn't pass it up when I saw Portuguese BBQ sign. Â So based on my only visit, I think it is fantastic. Â The BBQ chicken and ribs dish I had for $10 was great value and tasty. Â Chicken is crispy outside and moist inside. Â The ribs are well seasoned and rightly cooked. Â And the vegetables and olives they give you are much better than I imagined. Â The place is clean and the service was really good too. Â I cannot fault this place but too bad I don't live near to visit more often.
Review Source:Excellent. Anyplace that greets me with a bowl of marinated olives, and warm bread when I sit down usually is a predictor of a great meal. Byob, as well. But this is a restaurant review. Not upscale, but certainly clean and inviting, super-friendly, South American (?) barbecue. I have been there several times and can't seem to move from ordering a full order of the perfectly prepared grilled chicken, gilled on the bone and seasoned with something I can't quite identify, but is outstanding. Comes with a mound of yellow rice (or fries, etc.) and a healthy amount of pickled vegatable garnish. Wife has had the pork ribs, son had the short ribs, and picky daughter's boyfriend ordered the chicken tenders (there were like 6 big tenders - you could have fed four people). It's very comfortable to be there. Families show up for Sunday dinner, a great couples spot for a place to stop by and eat. It's romantic in the fact that it's not romantic. It will be the place they remember going to when they wanted an awesome piece of grilled chicken...with garlic chili hot sauce. Hope this becomes a staple of the neighborhood. Oh, service is a bit slow, as everything is cooked to order, so you're going to wait for that grilled chicken. Have a glass of wine, some olives, talk to your kids / wife / girlfriend and relax. It's like being in your mom's kitchen. Go there.
Review Source:Great place! One of my favorite Portuguese BBQ spots in North Jersey! The place is clean and super friendly. Â Their marinated black olives are insanely good! So is their warm and flaky Portuguese Rolls. Portion size is huge. BBQ chicken is perfect. Their shrimp, chourico, and calamari are also very good. It's a great spot to have lunch or dinner. BTW, BYOB!
Review Source:The good: Food was perfect. Great eats! Â Attentive and friendly staff. Olives were on point. Not too shabby!
The "could be better": seasoning on the calamari. Walls and eating area were a little sparse. But NONE of this should prevent you from coming here and eating yourself into a stupor!
Hit up the backyard today for lunch with some colleagues from work. Happy to say that we all enjoyed our lunch. I opted for the Chicken and Rib combo with beef ribs and sides of veggies and fries. Here are some of the things I liked
1. They serve hot mini Portuguese Rolls and olives to every table
2. Their portions are immense, even for the lunch crowd
3, The waitress was extremely accommodating (allowed me to change my combo from the normal pork ribs to beef ribs, with out Up charge) BTW that was a mistake; the pork ribs f-ing rock.
4. Affordable. Â We all ate like pigs and the bill was not too bad including a pretty Good tip for the waitress
5. Fast. Â we were in and out within the alloted hour we have.
We'll be back.
This is JerZ.
Portuguese BBQs are all over the place and so are the day-laborers that flock to them at lunch. Â These spots are usually straight grimey, greasy and dirt cheap.
Backyard Grill is located in an affluent neib, is clean as hell, day-laborer-free, and the food is straight quality and plentiful.
I just had 2 warm pieces of bread, tons of olives, beef short ribs, pork ribs, fries and rice....$9...what?!
My waitress was the hottest MILF, ever. Â It was really tough standing up to pay the bill...and it wasn't because of the meal.
