Insulted !!!  Spend good money there and a regular patron but appalled at $$$ 25 dollar Cover charge  for Blues Weekend.  Choosing to F@%# regulars over tourist is absolutely WRONG.  I'm seriously disappointed and rethinking NOT to spend my money especially since I know people there.  Love the place and the music but I have NO idea how Jr. Brown deserves this consideration when I've seen him for way less money.  I just saw how GREEDY OWNERS are on BLUES weekend.  Not cool.
Review Source:We continued the Birthday celebration for my lady this past Thursday night. We went to Beale On Broadway we entered the patio the cover was $10 dollars that night it was very reasonable. The Host was very kind I did not have cash on me so he said I could start a tab...Which was very convenient for the cover & our drinks.
We sat down at the tables and the hung lights it was a scene out of N' leans or Memphis on Beale Street itself. I felt like I was in the south when I step in the atmosphere.
What can I not say about Kim Massie.......She is a Must see! She not only sings blues but other genres of Music. If you are Downtown on a Tuesday or Thursday Night and want to hear just Great Music and singer with such stage presence you must check out Kim Massie!
Kim Massie did song requests and She did a special song request for my Lady which made her very Happy and when that makes her Happy I am very Happy!
The Staff was very friendly and kept the drinks coming!
Hard to choose between the best live Blues bar in the city but this is right up there. During the summer there is nothing better than sitting outside at night and soak in the music of some Blues greats.
We have stopped in here after Cardinals games and it is a great place to enjoy some drinks and meet other fans who enjoy the Blues.
Whenever Marquise Knox is playing I always make an effort to get my butt there. He is young but you would never know it with his soulful chords and lyrics.
If you want to check out the Blues in the Lou at its best, Beale should be at the top of your list!!
Went to B.O.B. for some blues. Â The anyways good. Â My friends and I sat in the outside tent area. Â The tables were packed in and the chairs were plastic with sides. This wasn't very good for one of my friends who is quite large. Â After waiting a while before going to bar to order our own drinks, we finally saw a waitress. Â Bathrooms were in need of major repair (hole in floor hazard) and very tiny.
Review Source:I'll begin with a disclaimer: I'm a professional musician, so I suppose in some respects that might make me more critical and in other areas more sympathetic than most.
Our band was on the road in St. Louis to perform a show and we decided to spend Thursday night checking out the live music scene. Â In addition to a Google search of the local entertainment which generally revealed positive reviews of this place, the concierge at our hotel recommended Beale on Broadway. Â She called ahead and we had a table waiting for the five of us, which was fortunate because the joint was packed. Â
The staff was great, drinks reasonably priced. Â There were two bands on the slate, an opening act which went until 10pm and then the local legend Kim Massie and her group who began at 10:30.
I'll echo what others have already stated regarding Ms. Massie--excellent singer; great rapport with the audience; and an amazingly wide repertoire of songs and genres. Â R&B is obviously her bread and butter, but she also sang some Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, country, and standards--and did them well. Â
One reviewer here states that she won't sing unless tipped. Â That is definitely not true. Â Yes, she does solicit tips for requests, but does so in a way that--in my opinion--is neither annoying nor overbearing. Â (And that in itself is a rather rare talent) Â I was also impressed by the fact that the band played over 90 minutes straight before taking a break (most bands do 45-60 minute sets). Â
The volume level was perfect--not ear-shattering loud as in many clubs. Â The mix and sound quality were overall very good, although--and I swear this is not my bias as a keyboardist coming out here--the keys should've been a little more prominent.
The atmosphere was awesome. Â The crowd is about as diverse as it gets: old, young, black, white, and everything in between. Â Very non-pretentious, and everyone there was really into the music and clearly having a good time. Â It's a quintessential neighborhood hole-in-the-wall juke joint, a real gem. Â
I'm not a dancer, but the lack of a dance floor is reason for the 4-star (and not 5-star) review. Â There is a small area in front of the stage where some folks were dancing, but it's cramped and can't accommodate more than a handful of people. Â Of course one could argue that the close confines add to the establishment's charm. Â
If you're in St.Louis and want to listen to some good live music and soak up the local atmosphere, make it a point to stop into Beale on Broadway. Â I know I'll be back the next time I'm in town.
After ending up here two nights in a row, I figured it was time for a review. As I arrived after only being here once, I was asked if I was still drinking what I had the previous night. I'm not a very memorable guy, but that didn't stop this bartender. This is a decently busy place, and for her to remember not only me, but what I was drinking, was awesome, especially since I was only there for an hour. On top of the great service, the music was great as well. Definitely a great place to start, continue, or end your night.
Review Source:When I first entered Beale On Broadway, I felt like I was instantly transported to New Orleans; not necessarily Beale Street, but more like that perfect little blues club you'd find tucked in an alley just off Beale Street. Â This cozy little place offers some of the best Blues Music you can find in St. Louis with melodies which will penetrate your bones and move your soul. Â
This bar can easily be mistaken for just another baseball bar, but don't be fooled by its location near the stadium. Â Don't get me wrong, it's a great place to meet before a game, but it really comes alive late at night with some amazing local and national musicians. Â I was blown away by Eric "Guitar" Davis, from Chicago and of course St. Louis' own Kim Massie is a real treat to see live. Â With live music seven nights a week....it just doesn't get any better than this!
The small intimate feel of this place allows you to sit within inches of the stage inside the building, or during the warmer months when they move to the outdoor stage. Don't be surprised to pay a cover at the door. Â This will probably be the best $7 or so that you'll have ever spent on live music. Â Oh, and the service is great! I'm officially addicted!
For $7 this was definitely a weekend highlight! While I'm from St. Louis, I no longer live in the area-well actually I haven't since I was 3 (lol). However, I love my city & I'm always open to finding the new happs! Well this trip was the perfect opportunity! Came here on a Saturday evening around 8-ish...we heard the wonderful sounds of the Roland Johnson & another singer whose name I can't recall, Wade maybe? My favorite part was that you can bring in outside food! The drinks were decent too, but the service was subpar. Nevertheless I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I would love to hear Ms Massie on a Thursday...I must return for that! This will def be on my list of "musts" when I'm in town!
Review Source:They say first impressions are a good thing, well that is true with my first impression of this bar.  I went to the Beale on Broadway with a group of friends after having dinner,  we got in and were lucky enough to get a table by the stage.  and  let me tell you, for the next hour or so I was so entertained, I am sure everyone there was entertained, but I am only speaking for myself at this time.. we caught the last set of one band and the first part of another bands set and in that short time I became more or less instantly hooked on the place.
The bar doesn't offer food, however you are allowed to order delivery from some of the local restaurants and they even offer a few menus to choose from which I thought was a pretty cool thing to do. Â I am planning on going back to them again for sure. if your looking for a place to hear some really kick butt blues music then head on down to the Beale on Broadway, you wont be disappointed..
Kim Massie has the ability to take requests from the audience and make them sound like she had practiced them to just impress that customer. Â Her quick wit and well rehearsed sliding scale on what to tip depending on the song or genre... made my sarcastic self laugh.
Her backup players showed the talent & diversity to keep up... or just make things up that made the song work. Â The improv after Kim Massie left the stage was jazz mixed with blues feel that made me think I will never hear that exact music again.
No food, but food for your soul
When I want to impress guests from out of town with something to represent Saint Louis I bring them to see Kim Massie at Beale on Broadway. She sings Tuesday and Thursday nights at 10:00pm. Â Though I have never seen her show start a time as she is a true diva. Â There is a $7 cover for the show. Seating is outside in the summer and inside with limited seating and dancing room in the winter. Â Her show is based on audience requests and as a result is always different. Â Audience members will hand her bills with the title of their request on them. Â She sings classics and current songs pulling up the lyrics on her ipad. Â I have even seen her do Baby Got Back. Â
Her voice is amazing but she has an incredible stage presence. Â She is so sassy! She always gets the crowd dancing. Â The crowd is usually very diverse; college students, business men, locals, hipsters, etc. Â The band who plays with her is really talented as well. Â Overall, really high quality music! Â On a site note, Kim just released a gospel CD on ITunes you can check out but I prefer the covers she does at Beale. Â
Beale on Broadway offers a reasonably priced drink menu. On my last visit, we sat inside at a candle lit table in the corner and ordered beers. Â It was the perfect atmosphere for listening to really good music. Â We also got to do great people watching (I concluded that we were sitting next to a group of swingers). Â The staff was really attentive, I even noticed one employee regularly cleaning the restrooms to prevent them from becoming typical bar bathrooms. Â They don't serve food but this has never been an issue for me. Â Their music schedule is posted on the website, they have performers every night of the week.
This is an essential Saint Louis experience! Being on Broadway, it can easily be incorporated to a night out downtown.
I agree with all the other raves, based on our Thursday night visit. We caught the tail end of the Ground Floor Band; next time I will try to catch more of their set! At 945 pm there was plenty of seating in this small place; at 1030, it was packed. Kim Massie was incredible; the crowd was fun; and the drinks kept coming despite the many people between us and the bar. This place made me want to move to St. Louis. There was a $7 cover, which was expected (based on other Yelpers).
Review Source:Came here last night to see a personal favorite blues band of mine from Chicago - Morry Sochet and the Special 20's. I saw this band last summer (yelped about them) at BB's across the street and saw them sell out and rock out well over a thousand people with killer blues rifts and stage presence. What a different venue this was.....talk about intimate! We were able to hang out with all the guys in the band before, during and after the set, while pounding affordable drinks all night. There is no more than 8 tables in the whole place - luckily our wives were able to grab one front and center, while my buddies and I grabbed a stool at the corner of the bar.
Show was awesome, but I don't agree with the location for the band. They are an 8 piece set that was literally playing on top of each other, which seemed to kind of limit a lot of their stage swagger.
Not going to lie... I thought I was going to BB's at first. Â So we were confused to why there was no food. Â They have a hot dog guy outside though and they allow you to order delivery. Â So we ordered some pizza from Joanie's. Â Along with the smith-wicks pitchers we ordered and the show... it was a great night! Â $7 cover was a bit surprising... but worth it. Â
We did $5 parking in the lot behind the place.
Great show!
I liked the people there, and the service!
The inside can be a little cramped, but there's a uniquely decorated outside area with heaters... they have a TV outside so that you can still enjoy the show going on inside. Â
I'll probably try this place out again in the future!
Also fun location... really close to the Busch Stadium and it's real close to the other fun Jazz/Cajun places.
I went here two of the 4 nights that I was in town visiting because I was drawn back after the first night hearing Kim Massie sing. Â She was outstanding! Â No food here and the wine sucked, but I didn't care at all because the entertainment was great both nights! Â The place is small and packed from beginning of the night until closing. Â They lose a star because there was no room to turn around in bathroom.
Review Source:This place is an absolute gem. Â Five bucks to see the area's finest bluesmen honing their craft? Â I feel like the pigeon lady in Home Alone 2 sneaking into Carnegie Hall.*
Intimate, no frills, no nonsense. Â Just coldbeer and good American music. Â I went to college in St. Louis and didn't discover this place until my last semester. Â Aside from not winning the lottery, not finding Beale earlier is my biggest regret from that period. Â
*Symphonies in major cities are required to provide accessible storage lofts for their pigeon ladies.
This place is terrible! Â The "great" Kim Masse isn't all that great. She might have a good voice but not to the extent ppl want to claim she is... and I love jazz, blues, and southern rock that they play there, but her personality is what made me want to leave. I understand it might be a job to sing, but who sits up there for $10 minutes at a time, explaining that if you want to hear a song you need to pay. Not just a dollar, not just five... For one song-- because THAT particular song was expensive-- she stopped singing until more ppl paid her for that song. Five ppl came up and each gave $5 dollars just to have her sing. That is not what entertainers do! I have friends with bands and if you want money or think you are good enough to charge for it then you ask for a cover charge-- which they already do at this bar!! And when she was done singing and on her breaks, she was not hanging with the crowd, not having a drink with friends or just talking with someone. No, she sat there and counted money on her half hour breaks. Again, I'm not upset ages making money, I'm just upset in the manor she goes about making it happen. Â And for a side note, I have been there a few times and my tab is constantly wrong. They won't produce any paper that shows what you ordered, they just charge you. So either the drinks they told me that were cheap was a lie or they are over charging--which is also lying.... It's the first time I ever tipped a bartender less than 20%. Â This mistake wasnt just my tab... It was everyone in my group that night. Â Needless to say, 10 ppl are not going back ever again.
Review Source:I'm a self-proclaimed Kim Massie fan and can't get enough of her endless line-up of blues music & hilarious sense of humor, so needless to say, I adore Beale on Broadway. Like my girl Jelena Z. said, you can't get food here, but you really don't need it... they have plenty of liquor to keep you occupied!
When I spent a few years in Chicago I lived next to an awesome blues club that was literally open 24/7 and Beale on Broadway fills that void in my heart. As a city resident, it's important to me to know that I can go somewhere on a Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday and now it's going to be busy and lively, and this spot is exactly that. They have live music every night and also a "come as you are" attitude. No one's judging here, just dancing and boozing & having an awesome time!
It's quite a scene after a Cards game... lots of ladies in little jerseys acting totally ridiculous on the dance floor. There's also one or two guys you can tell are still dressed from work (button down and slacks) and they're getting wild after being cooped up behind a computer all day. Kim puts on an awesome performance (every Tuesday & Thursday) and her band is really something... three out of four of them perform the entire set with their eyes closed. Seriously... go watch it and see for yourself. They're either sleeping or having so much fun they have to close their eyes to calm themselves down.
This place is real and downright cool and I love it. Nothing better then some blues & booze on a boring Tuesday night!
Live blues, 365 nights a year 'til 3am. Now that's what I'm talking about!
No, they don't serve food. But you can get that across the street at the Broadway Oyster Bar (fantastic music acts over there as well). But after I've spent a few hours at the Oyster Bar, my friends and I like to change up the scene by heading to Beale. It's a bit darker, a little grimier, and more intimate. The performers on this stage are top-notch, occupational musicians... if you're looking for 'real' blues in St. Louis, you've come to the right venue.
There's always a cover (maybe $5-7) but you're supporting St. Louis' vibrant local music scene... here's to keeping it alive! The bartenders are no-nonsense pros - drinks are strong and the beers are cold. And if you get the chance, visit during the warmer months so you can soak up the sparkle of the Beale on the patio. Cheers!
Ended up here on the 4th of July after the show downtown. There was a great live act playing all night. I sat down with a friend from college and was content for the rest of the night. Ended up speaking with a very beautiful girl while listening to some great jazz/blues music...what more can you ask for. If only I had lived there and not just on leave. I will continue to frequent this place every time I'm in St. Louis.
Review Source:If you like blues, this bar is perfect. Especially on Thursday nights with Kim Massie singing. She's fantastic. I love the giant patio and the drinks aren't too expensive. There's always a giant fan going during hot summer nights and heaters when it's cold. There's also always room for dancing. I wouldn't recommend going here when it's too cold or raining because the inside is tiny and gets crowded easily. There's also a giant parking lot right next to it that's usually free.
Review Source:In the summertime, this is where I am every single Tues/Thurs!  Kim Massie brings the house down with her phenomenal voice on the back patio.  The stage is built to look like the front porch of an old house.  A totally diverse crowd - from Cardinal fans to 80 year old  regulars - dances until the microphone goes silent.  If you're there after the kitchen closes and you're still hungry - don't worry! There's a pizza co that delivers right to your table - just give them a call on your cell.  Phenomenal!
Review Source:Fancy this place ain't but then again, that's not what it's going for. Â I'll admit, I'm a little bit in love with this joint. Â Kim Massie plays there on Tuesdays and Thursdays (love me some Kim Massie). Â She goes on at 10pm but there are other great performers before her. Â GET THERE EARLY!!! Â This place fills up fast. Â
Reasonable drink prices and friendly yet to the point bartenders lend to the authenticity of this blues bar. Â They don't serve food but do provide menus to local restaurants that will deliver. Â Nothing like seeing a delivery guy trying to squeeze through the masses to find the drunky who ordered five pizzas for himself. Â Good times! Â
I also love that Beale sports a huge cross section of people. Â A nice mix of men, women, old, young, gay, straight, and everything in between. Â
And, if you luck out and score a table don't be territorial if you don't need all the chairs. Â Show some love and offer that chair up to a stranger. Â You may just get a free cocktail out of the deal :-)
Beale on Broadway - my other "favorite bar" downtown. Â
First - in the summertime, spring and fall, I LOVE their patio. Â The owner extended it (because it was so packed with people every night he had no choice!) and it's still really busy. Â There is nothing like sitting on Beale's patio, gazing at the city, listening to Kim Massie belt out a tune like the diva she is, while watching a train go by on the overhead track right by the venue. Â I feel like I'm in Memphis every time. Â Not that I know of any venues with overhead train tracks in Memphis. Â There is that place with the goats. Â Anyway...
The music: Â The best. Â The owner brings top quality national acts in and you can see blues acts that perform at large venues in this intimate setting (I forgot to mention the inside: Â Exposed brick, dim lighting, people at every table, the stage overflowing with musicians. Perfect). Â The BEST of St. Louis local blues talent performs at Beale as well. Â Any night you head down to this venue you are guaranteed GREAT music.
Beale is conveniently located downtown (200 yards south of the stadium) and is always a lot of fun. Â Good times, great music. Â
Note: Beale no longer serves food fyi. Â This doesn't take away from their stars.
It's about the music and the bar...Not sure what the other reviewers were expecting. Great, thoughtful & fun staff. Kim Massie & band rocked the Sesame Street theme song request to the fullest.
Tiny pub with cool stage indoors. Full bar and outdoor lounge area. Made a great location for a wedding reception. If you're cab-dependent in these parts, make sure to line up your reservation on the earlier side.
We went here last night to see John Nemeth (wooo whoooo) and sat on the patio, which is pretty much the only option. Â Inside there are a few tables, but I guess they use that for the winter maybe? Â Not sure when Rosalind went but they don't have a kitchen there, so the only food was from Joanies To Go which you have to order. Â No one was eating that night that we saw.
We got there early since we didn't know how crowded it would be and even though they posted everywhere that the band would be there at 9pm, they really weren't coming until 10pm. Â That was a real pain and I'm now wondering if they planned that so we would drink more....hmmmm.
Overall, the patio was pretty nice and the bartenders/servers were on it .
Nice to come and just sit and drink on the patio if you like the band. Â Bathrooms are a little gross though.
My first time in St. Louis and I was tired and starving after waking up at 4:45am to fly into the city to play a rugby match. Team dinner was planned at this establishment as it offered live music, blues music. The cover charge was the initial bummer because several of us on the team are practically impoverished. The thought of having to pay to get into a restaurant that you will then pay more money for food and drink was just a bummer. BUT, they reduced the $5 charge to $3 since our party had 20 people in it.
The menu was very limited. Not a lot for the non-meat eaters, and three of us who had ordered red beans and rice got our food 45 minutes after the first person on our team got her food. Really, everyone else was DONE with their food when we three began eating.
The French fries had a strange aftertaste, the cornbread was a bit dry, the beans and rice lacked flavor, my salad consisted of only iceberg lettuce, and the tea was also odd tasting. I don't usually have so many negative things to say about eating establishments, so I am very sad to write this.
However, the staff was AWESOME! The back porch in which we sat had a nice homey feel. The music was great! So, two stars instead of one!
If you are just looking for some good food and a beer, this is the place! The food could use some work.
