While I'm not a fan of sports bars, I went to the Bier Garden because they were running a deal on appetizers and I really wanted wings. I didn't expect much out of them but the wings were AMAZING. I got the dry rub Jamaican Jerk wings and they were so delicious.

Great beer selection and ample TVs for watching a game...

Bier Garden is always a last minute choice because Asheville tends to shut down after 10pm any night of the week.

The first time I visited Asheville we went here after 10pm and ended up closing the place down. My memory was a bit foggy. Ive been here several times since and I always leave wondering how I made it home!

Between their tasty wings, oversized burgers and strong drinks we were dancing up a storm! The music is so loud it lures you in from the road, which is what got our attention but giggly girls don't need much to get excited!

Despite Asheville being a bar city, the Garden has excellent mixed drink specials every night that start at only $5. A shot go Jameson, that is more like 2 shots, was only $4. A complete steal compared to other bars on the same street.

If you're looking for a great place to come after typical sleep hours in Ash-Vegas, head to the Bier Garden. I guarantee you won't be able to sit still when the music starts.

The Bier Garden is an all-in-one restaurant, sports bar, and pub located in downtown Asheville.  A large group of us stopped by on a Friday night for drinks.  It was busy and IDs were checked at the door.

The business encompasses a very large space.  Upon entry, you'll be in the big, cavernous beer hall.  It's filled with communal tables, both high tops and regular tables.  The beer hall has several TVs including a massive HD projection screen, all playing sports.  The beer hall is connected to game rooms with games and activities such as the Xbox Kinect, pool tables, foosball and/or air hockey (can't remember exactly), darts, and a video arcade.  Lots of fun to be had.

The restaurant and bar are in a separate section of the building, but still connected directly to the beer hall.  Like the beer hall, the restaurant and bar have a plethora of TVs tuned to sports.  The restaurant has another giant projection screen.  The restaurant is sort of tucked away in its own little corner, so it's relatively quieter.  Ideal for those looking for a sit-down meal.  However, I'm sure you can order food and drinks from anywhere in the complex.

The staff is friendly and the beer is flowing.  The crowd is diverse, but you can probably count on mostly 20 to 30-somethings and a college vibe.  There's really not much to speak of as far as the facility's decor and ambiance.  Despite the name, do not expect the Bier Garden to look like a traditional German restaurant, pub, or beer garden.  It's just a casual hang-out spot.  It suffices for its purpose and I do recommend it for sports viewing.  Great for groups.

Lots of good beer choices, but something about the place didn't really do it for me,  It smelled a bit bad - think it's a tourist trap.  Just OK.  Probably wouldn't seek it out.

Went there with a group of friends to watch a basketball game last Saturday night.  Great beer selection, tons of TV's,  but the food was horrible.

Our service is usually spotty, but this night was an exception.  Maddee was attentive, friendly and the best part about the night.  She made our bad experience much better.

We ordered the chicken sandwich which was delivered less than 3 minutes after ordering it and it was obviously over-cooked, dry and tough (probably pre-cooked and warmed up).  We ate it but regretted it later.  A half hour later, we ordered the $13 Kobe burger (cooked medium) but it came out less than rare and bloody and the fries were cold.  We couldn't eat it and said something to the manager.

The manager was nice and did what she could by taking the food off the bill.  As soon as we paid,  a different employee came around and took all the condiments off of our table and the DJ started setting up, pushing us out quickly and the game was still on.

Keep in mind, this was a  Saturday night, they were not busy, and we were one of only a few tables eating at that time.

We all have worked at bars and restaurants and appreciate good service, so the only reason we would go back is because our server was really great and recommended awesome beer!  We'll never eat here again or recommend it to anyone.

The biggest beer menu I've ever seen! I had the local White Zombie Ale which has become (during my short visit) one of my favorites. The service was great, but the food was just okay. Next time, I'll plan on appetizers (the beer cheese plate was AWESOME) and not a main meal.

3 of 4 stars (good, casual dining).

    (see explanation of ratings below)

What to wear: anything that shows your support of your favorite team!

Taco special was served in very large, flour shells which dwarfed the meat (and I couldn't taste any cheese).

$15 per person, dessert and gratuity not included.

    About my ratings:

Only fine dining establishments can garner five stars.  Until yelp realizes that a fast food joint cannot possibly be ranked equally with a $100 per person place, I need to draw the line somewhere.  If we were only talking about the quality and presentation of the food, it would be a different story.  But, as we know, yelp's rankings take into account the entire dining experience.

Therefore, I divide restaurants into three categories (and I wish yelp would do the same):

    1) fast food (no table service)

    2) casual dining (table service)

    3) fine dining (linen napkins, no plastic cups, no TV's in dining room, typically more expensive than casual dining)

Fine dining can earn a max of five stars.  Casual dining can earn a max of four stars.  Fast food can earn a max of three stars.

This is just a few blocks from my place. A good neighborhood bar to watch a game or two.

Quite large inside and it's great I'm sometime when they open the windows.

I've never eaten here, just imbibed...........and if you want local.......this has a blending of tourist and locals.

Very Pleasant surprise. I bought a Groupon because the deal was very good - did not really expect to have a great dinner at a bar, but it worked out that way.

Bear in mind - it was Tuesday night, so the place was not crowded at all. We started with the Jamaican Jerk wings and a couple of pints of local brew - fantastic!! She had the salmon salad, I had the fillet - both dishes were excellent. Nice portion, service was wonderful, I was asking myself why I had not tried this place before for dinner. I sure will now!!!

We stopped here to drink some beers and watch football on a Saturday afternoon.  They have an extensive selection of beers, on tap and bottle.  I had the White Zombie which was awesome.  They had the game on several TVs and a huge projector as well.  They also have a game room with a pool table, air hockey, basketball, ect.
Our server was nice but not very attentive.  It did seem to take a while to order our next round of beers each time.  We did not eat so I cannot say anything about their food.
Fun place with lots of good beer!

What a great surprise.  Was not expecting much from this restaurant that looked more tourist trap than good food, but the food was terrific.  I had a grilled chicken salad and my wife had the fish tacos and both were very fresh and quite tasty.

The only downside was the wait staff - while polite - was very slow at a time when it wasn't too busy.

Service aside, if you are looking for simple, good food this place is a good stop.

Great spot to have a beer and watch a game. They have a million tv's with signs indicating which game will be on what tv. They also have a bunch of food which is pretty standard and overpriced. Go for the beers, stay awhile, but grab food somewhere else.

Hard to decide what to give this place. The service was very good- but the food wasn't that great (I had the chicken sandwich and it tore my stomach up that evening). The beer was decent and there were decent prices. A lot to choose from.

It was a good place to watch a game, especially if you can sit in front of the big screen.

The skee ball machine needs repair, it ate my quarters. :(

Don't forget to check in on yelp and get 50% off an appetizer. I wish I had gotten a better appetizer before I realized that!

I hesitate on giving the Bier Garden 4 stars, as my real rating would be 3.5.  I have been here a few times to watch football games and usually to get some food and beers.  I have to say their food is okay, but nothing spectacular.  Interesting enough, the best thing I had was the peanut butter and jelly wings.  Sounds gross, but actually the complete opposite.  The beers plentiful and are reasonably priced, with a few exceptions.  I can see this being a great hangout for college age kids who are looking for somewhere to party later at night.  They do have a game room that seems pretty fun as well, but gets crowded. The service is very very slow.

Just so, so.  This place has potential with the way it was set up, but I found the food to be subpar and the service was VERY slow! They did have a nice beer selection though.

The Bier Garden is huge- several spacey garden patio-type rooms and a ton of beer choices. We didn't eat any food here, but the drink prices were decent. Late at night, the table service is pretty mediocre and the crowd made me think of a college frat party. Definitely not at all like any biergarten that I've ever been to. This will do for some drinks with friends- I could see this being more pleasant earlier in the day.

Don't come here expecting anything that even somewhat resembles a real biergarten.  It's basically a Chile's with a great beer menu, which isn't saying much because every place in Asheville has a great beer menu.  The waitress had no clue how to process the Yelp check in special, so there went my 50% off app.  Service was mind numbingly slow.  After deciding that two of us were going to split a sandwich, we were informed there would be a 2 dollar charge.  This was the only place I went to in Asheville that I wholeheartedly would not recommend, other than maybe to catch a game and just drink.

There is nothing fancy about this place.  However, it is a great place for a quick appetizer and beer.

They have many quality beers on tap and right now if you check in on Yelp you will get 50% off one appetizer.

The atmosphere of the place is just like anything else in Asheville, eclectic.  Sort of like an equal opp sports bar if you will.  LOL

There are plenty of places nearby that are BETTER.

This place is huge, so it's not hard to find a seat, late night, which is when we stopped in for our last beer of the night.  The bartenders were quick and attentive, but I did get sick of seeing one dance around, rapping to the music, trying to impress every girl who stepped up to the bar. I guess it reminded me a little bit of a college bar....which would have gotten more stars from me about nine years ago:-)

Their beer selection is decent, but not even close to the best in Asheville, so definitely don't make this your only beer experience while visiting.  They too, have an "open air" feel when it's nice out, which I find amazing and wish Raleigh did this too!

I was hoping for more out of this place and it was just, well, so-so.

Now don't get me wrong. This had a LOT of ups going for it. Awesome beer list, large venue, decent service and great beer specials.

But it just felt so misguided. It seemed like it could have been a cool, intimate spot to enjoy solid food and beer. But the TVs were obnoxious. I would have never pegged it for a sport's bar.

I didn't eat there, but if I ever get back to Asheville, I'd be inclined to up the stars if the food is better than the atmpshere.

Downtown Asheville, on a cool day. Clouds forming on the mountains, people playing music on the streets. Batter fried asparagus with a Remaloude dipping sauce. The smell of my cheeseburger wafting in the air. I am having a ice tea unsweetened while savoring the crispy french fries and loving the ambience of this sports bar atmosphere. It is turn of the century chic and a great place to grab a drink after work. The noise level is comfortable, and televisions have current sport event going.

A nice experience. I may even come back this weekend for a drink! Fun!

Bier Garden is great for what it is--a pleasant, vibrant sports bar geared towards the younger crowd.

It has an extensive beer list, and most of those beers are very good.  They've got some decent food (I personally enjoy the Kobe Beef Burger.  Because it's Kobe Beef).  The staff is friendly and attractive, and seem to enjoy what they do.

Don't come the Beer Garden expecting lavishness or posh.  For a quick, and casual beer with friends and maybe a game of pool, Bier Garden is a place to go.

Ok, I've been to the so-called Bier Garden a few times, but it has been several years now.  However, The Bier Garden and I are now neighbors, so I feel compelled to write a review.

I'm not going to mince words: I want this place to close forever.  The only way it could be made worse is if it expanded.

The few times I had been there (it has since over-flowed into the shopping mall in which it is embedded), it was a middling sports bar with some arcade games and bad renditions of bar food.  The arcade games were alright, but the service and food were bad at best.  I have no opinion of its quality as a sports bar- I'm just not into that kind of thing, but I suppose it's cool if you are... I'm open minded and all.

If you want a plate with greasy chips, sour cream, and picante sauce... order the nachos, they are sub-par-excellence.  My stomach and heart burn for them.

I now live half a block away and am constantly (on a near nightly basis) awoken by the parade of drunkards shouting "Wooooooo!" like it's the first time they drank too much at a 'kegger'.  Looking at the clientele, I know this is not true, they've been drunk at many 'keggers'.  In fact, you could say that the clientele look down-right keggard.  The drunk parade is every weekend (and some weeknights) from 11:30pm to 2:30am.  For my added enjoyment, there is an occasional tough-guy 'you've got a problem' pre-fight shouting match, a dude using my building as a urinal, and/or desperate shouting for the lost drunk (usually in the form of two or three girls shouting/slurring "where're you going!?!? at another..  These are, after all, a hybrid of party and pack animals).

I'd like to thank the patrons and the Bier Garden staff for creating and maintaining such a super fancy and classy establishment.  I can tell by the volume and content of the yelling that the Bier Garden is practically the modern day meeting place for the Vienna circle and other Germanic intellectual heavy-weights.  Imagine Marx, Wittgenstein, Goedel and Einstein all having a pleasant conversation over beers.  Now imagine the opposite.

Incidentally, I've been to more convincing beer gardens in China..  Let's not kid ourselves, this is a sports bar and bears no resemblance to a bier garden no matter how much you had to drink.

When you're leaving this place, hooting/hollering and stumbling towards your drunk-drive home, just remember that you woke my girlfriend and I up.  again.

Nice beer selection and ambiance. Awful service and food.

The food is ridiculously overpriced. My friend ordered chicken tenders for $8. They came on a paper plate with three "straight out of the freezer" chicken tenders on the plate. No french fries, chips or sauce. I got the nachos which were okay, they skimped on the toppings. My fiance got the "pizza of the day" which was $15 for a personal sized with no toppings. What a rip off.

#Yelp #Yelp365 23 - I wish I could give this place zero stars but that would mean I don't write a review. We strolled into this place and expected bar food at best.

The soup tasted like dirt, it reminded me as a child, tasting dirt while playing ball. It was disgusting.... I ate less then a bite, the server noticed the full bowl and how I didn't touch it and said nothing. Slow service, and bad food.

When they say part dive bar, it's really a dive! Steer clear----

Solid 3 for the food, 5 for the drink selection and atmosphere.

I've been waiting to review this place until I tried the food, and now I have.  The food was not too bad for what is essentially a sports bar.  My wife's chicken sandwich was very messy to eat, but tasty, I'm told.  I got a corned beef sandwich which was certainly ok, but could have benefited from some au jus or something, because it was a little dry.

The atmosphere is great, especially if you just want a place to grab a drink and watch a game or hang out.  The beer selection is pretty amazing, more extensive than Thirsty Monk I'd say.

The food wasn't great, but then again, it's not called the Grub Garden. Beer was great. I especially enjoyed the descriptions written for each option on the drink menu.

We came here after dinner because we heard about a decently large selection of beer that they had.

Sure enough, they had a good number of local brews on tap.  I tried the Highland Gaelic Ale (pretty good) and a Spaten Oktoberfest (awesome- very refreshing).  No belgians that I remember though.  Oh well.  (Also sad that the Thirsty Monk was so poor with their Belgian selection when I went- but that's another review).

For anyone who knows Atlanta, it's basically like a Taco Mac- lots of sports playing on the screens.  We didn't try any of the food, so no comment about that.  Waiters and waitresses were all clad in black.  Guess it's company policy?  *shrug*.

    Just ok.

As I read the reviews of other Yelpers, my first thought was...what are you smoking?

Maybe you were visiting during Herb Fest and got some bad herb.

Visited the San Francisco Of The East during the World Cup and watched
    USA  - vs - Ghana.

Many plasmas and a huge projection TV. They have an excellent menu with a great selection of burgers, fish & seafood entrees and salads,
The beer selection is note worthy. Many local microbrews and bottled imports as well as extensive selection of draught beers. They serve up a very clean Guinness. The Bell's Double Hearted Ale was exceptional.
Also worth trying were the 420 from Atlanta, The Gaelic Ale and The Orange Blossom Pale.

The Kobe beef burger was a meal and the sweet potato fries were delicious. It's in a great location too. You can walk through the building and go up the elevator and enter the surface parking lot across from the Grove Arcade on Page Ave. They have an affordable metered lot.

Service is exceptional, Justine, Lauren and Buck will make your visit memorable. I would recommend it on Sundays during football season.

Trying to be too many things to too many people.

Yes- they have beer, and lots of it. The selection is impressive (it seemed to be more bottles than drafts) but unfortunately that's where the positives end, and keep in mind I normally give high marks for a comprehensive beer list.

When I walked in I was pleasantly surprised to see so many TVs with the games on, so I asked for a table. The problem was most of the TVs are in the smoking section and there are far less in the non-smoking area. Regardless I requested a nonsmoking table. However, the hostess seemed to be challenged and gave my table away- TWICE!  So I ended up just going to the bar, where on a Saturday afternoon the service was terrible.

I was going to eat, but the menu was typical pub grub (not what I was expecting at a place called The Bier Garden) and the food looked less than appetizing, so I finished two beers and left with a bad taste in my mouth- NOT FROM THE DELIRIUM but from the overall environment.

To summarize the place wants to be a sports bar, ale house, and restaurant- the problem is they aren't doing any of them all that well.

I've been to the Bier Garden now 4-5 times.  Always a good stop on a Sunday in the fall to make sure I can catch my Patriots.

This review is for Sunday, Oct 4th, 2009

This being North Carolina.....they still allow smoking in restaurants (until Jan 2010).  So in order to watch the Patriots, I had to sit in the "smoking" section.

We started off with the nachos with chicken.  Very nicely done.  Lots of chips and smothered (but not overly) with the toppings of chicken, black olives, salsa, guacamole, sour cream, tomatoes, lettuce, etc.

For a drink?  Sam Adams Octoberfest.  Good combo.

After finishing the nachos and my beer.  I was thinking I'd have another one before switching to diet coke (I was driving).  The waiter comes back and says "we are out of Sam Adams Octoberfest".  WHAT?!?!?!?  NO WAY!  This place prides itself on having over 100 beers....but they didn't order enough Sam Adams Octoberfest?  I was annoyed.  This cost them a star.

So I got a diet coke.

At the half, we decided to order something else to eat.  I studied the beer list a bit more too.  Ended up ordering the Cuban Panini sandwich with sweet potato fries.

The sandwich was very good and the sweet potato fries were too.

Then I saw it.  "Sea Dog Blueberry Wheat" on the bottled beer list.  NO WAY!  This is a blueberry wheat beer that has a VERY big blueberry fragrance and even better....a VERY big blueberry taste too.  Very nice!  It was excellent.  This saved them a star.

Overall, this isn't a bad place.  Decent prices, decent food, and good beer....and the occasionally fun waiter too.

Parking is not a good thing here, but there is a parking garage a short walk away.

    I will be back.

As we were strolling the streets of Asheville debating on where to grab a beer and a burger, we opted for The Bier Garden solely based on a table that was near the open air wall facing the street.

We were promptly greeted by our server who took our drink order and recommended the bucket of beer as the best deal.  SOLD!  I ordered the 1/2 lb. grilled angus burger medium rare, but was told they cannot cook it less that medium because of NC state law.  Okay, fine - I went with medium.  The burger was very good - great flavor and the smoked chipotle mayonnaise was the perfect condiment to enhance the tastiness.  The fries, well they were fries.  Nothing special.

The best part of our evening was the people watching.  We definitely picked the right table for that!  Good burger, cold beer, great people watching equaled A-OK!

Unbelievable beer and wine list -  over 100 to choose from ....

The service was the worst I have ever encountered ... our waiter was friendly but extremely slow and and once something was delivered to the table he wouldn't return for over 15 or 20 minutes ... it ruined the meal .... my sister ordered a sandwich and after it was delivered she needed mayo but waited so long for the waiter to return ... she gave up and ate it without ... horrible ...

I ordered ginger ale and got club soda and even after I complained and requested it was changed to my original order of ginger ale our waited returned quit some time later with another club soda ... ridiculous .....

I ordered the crab quesadilla - it was so incredible ! One of the best dishes I have ever had (in life) ....

(Blue Crab Claw meat sauted with roasted corn salsa over chipotle flat bread covered with pepper jack cheese, sliced avocado and chili lime sour cream !!)

Part dive bar, part restaurant, part sports bar...this place ends up doing nothing really well. They have tried to accomidate too much and have ended up being half-assed. There are times (mainly during the day) when you can get a good window seat and enjoy the mountain air while drinking a beer and eating a burger. That is about the extent of what you should experience here.

    Not horrible...but not great.

Amusing how this place tries to use the word "Bier" as a fancy way of trying to maybe put a German touch on it?  That's where it ends.  I went here once a while back and it sucked.

The beer selection is average, prices are craptastic and I was surrounded by so many liberal douchebags that I wish the bible thumpers and rednecks with rifles came in to even things out.

I would give this place 1 star, but I feel some pity for this establishment so I'll just leave it at 2.

We went on a weeknight, so there were folks around, but it wasn't very crowded.  We actually went to just have a good beer, but while there we decided to try the green chile wings (so good, just really great wings!) and sweet potato fries (very good, not perfect).

There was a special the night we were there, and our beers were quite inexpensive - a pint of Hoegaarden was $3.50, and a pint of Smithwick's was $2.50.  Those are great prices for good beers.

    We'll be back sometime.

We ended up here after going to a few highly recommended restaurants in Asheville and being hit with an hour wait.  So I guess that was probably the first hint it wasn't going to be great - being able to get a prime seat on a Saturday night!

But it was decent - nothing to rave about - but nothing terrible.  Waiter started out good, but got a little distant after more people started coming in.  Great beer selection (go figure!) and I thought the prices were good - but I'm comparing that to Atlanta.  Steven had a burger and I had a crab sandwich.  Both good - again nothing to shout about.

So for no wait and a cheaper meal - it was decent - we just kind of wish we would have waited at the Lobster Trap for a better meal.
