THE GOOD
I love the hidden spot. It is right off the beach down a wee bit shady alley.
Bierbrunnen had nice park benches in the alley surrounded by dive inside the bar.
This is where the good ends.
THE BAD
The bartender did not know the price of certain beers. After helping the poor fellow figure out a price, we ended up paying $18 for a 750ml bottle of Chimay.
THE UGLY
They were out of stock on quite a number of beers. We were lucky to find the Chimay in the cooler.
I do understand why they would be open before they restocked, but I guess that is what we get coming in the afternoon.
I hang out here to be on the beach, but avoid the beach scene. Â Few tourists, but I can still smell the ocean and feel the breeze. Â Looking for good Deutsch essen? Â Nope (but the food is tasty, especially when they pull out the Big Egg smoker on weekends - killer!). Â Decent beer selection? Â Yep. Â Really friendly service? Â You'll find it here. Â It's laid back and not pretentious, so if your not and are you can find better choices further north on the beach.
Review Source:Interesting beer joint tucked away in an alley in Fort Lauderdale. Â Good variety of beers. Â The offerings have changed from international to a more domestically oriented selection. Â The bartenders are always interesting, the same one has never been there twice. Â The place is getting a bit run down and grungy, but this probably adds to the offbeat hipster vibe. Â There are periodic problems with the tap when one orders beer. Â We've never ordered food here. Â It's a fun place to spend an hour or two with a brew.
Review Source:I'm giving it three stars as I am sentimental, and will always stop in when I'm visiting. Â When you sit on the breezeway side, you can lean back in your chair and see the ocean. Â They do have many beers on tap and have seemed to have switched to more America micro options, nothing wrong with that. Â However, I can remember a time when there were more European brews to choose from and I miss that. Â It always seems that there's a tap line pouring funny when I'm there as well and I get the idea it has changed hands several times. Â It also never seems to be that busy. Â Good for you, bad for their business. Â But I like it, ultimately. Â Easy stroll from the beach or where you're staying.
Ooh, yeah. Â I get the idea they could use a glycol system to chill their beer lines. Â That might solve the sudsy tap problems.
Gotta love this place for the location alone! Â Walking off the beach and then you discover the hidden shady alley with a window you can sit at and stare at wonderful beer taps. Â I don't even drink beer, but I do here.
Thank you for being on the beach, but tucked back to keep the Griswald's away!
Twenty two taps in and tucked away in an alleyway literally a stop drop and roll from the beach, Bierbrunnen was just what the doctor ordered this afternoon. Not any doctor, per se, perhaps even Dr. Spaceman for the 30 Rock folk -- but in a town rife with slender beer selections (pardon me if I don't bowl over for 'Michelob Nothing'), it was really cool to find a spot that prides itself on pouring craft beers, angry beers, beers with personality diametrically opposed to what we might otherwise term 'benign.'
And so it was. There was a pretzel ordered, and truth be told that didn't much blow me away (a - it was a pretzel. b - it was a little leather-ier than usual ballpark fare), but as for the brew, I found myself plenty pleased. And sure, you'll find some well distributed pilsners, but I was impressed that they stocked some (super crafty) stuff that literally has to make its way across the lower 48, like the Rogue Dead Guy Ale. No Einstein stuff, but enough that you have to know what you're looking for and make sure you can get it, even if it's inconvenient.
There are 22 taps servicing a crowd that can never really have enough choices. Enough originality. Enough seasonality. You'll never make all those self proclaimed experts happy. And Bierbrunnen doesn't do the whole deal right. It's still, at heart, a beach bar, albeit one with its brainpan steeped firmly in interesting choices. That, to me, seems an amiable beginning.
Located in a little out of the way alley, near the beach and with a really good, I think 22 selections of draft beers, it's a great place to sit down, have a brew and chill out. In the evenings, on certain nights, it also offers some rather decent entertainment with patrons just about equally divided between locals and tourists. As I've been going here for a good number of years, I've noticed that the number of tourists have increased because, with the advent of mobile devices and various apps, particularly Yelp, tourists no longer have to rely upon merely stumbling into off beat little places like Bierbrunnen.
As for food, Bierbrunnen's cook might be somewhat ethnically challenged by anything German and I really can't say much for their other items either. However, for a good draft beer and an off the beaten path to chill out near the beach, I'm a fan, so I've given it Four Stars.
Almost half of the taps were kicked, the service was slow and the bartender was too cool for the place. Some of the items on the menu ended up being $3 more than stated, which we only learned when the check came around, with the following explanation after we asked what was going on "uhm, i think he's in the middle of changing the menu or something." Another item was listed on the menu as being accompanied by home made mustard. In reality it was another $3 extra, because "it is home made." I understand a lot of places state that prices are subject to change, but a $3 increase across the board? I would expect to be told about this at the time of placing the order. I feel particularly let down, because I was talking this place up to a lot of people.
Review Source:Went here for "happy hour," because we saw their sign at the end of the alley. I put happy hour in quotation marks because after we ordered our beer, I found that a pint was $5. Seriously? Why don't you just punch me in the mouth, and we'll call it "Exhilarated Hour"?
Tried to order a Golden Monkey Ale, but was told that they were out? Again, really? Perhaps you haven't heard, but here in the states, we have a custom where you put a cup over a tap handle if the keg is blown.
Went to the bathroom, but I should've held it 'til the next place; not only was it filthy, but there were no paper towels. Seriously makes me wonder if the staff is washing their hands.
Super friendly service. They offer a variety of beers you won't find in other bars. Bratwurst is amazing. Try the smoked wings. Schnitzel is definitely not a strong suit so don't waste your money. Totally relaxed atmosphere that we love to be a part of. Every time we go there we have a great time and meet loads of fun people. Great view and outside seating.
All these people who poopoo on this place have a skewed sense of what this place is trying to be. This is not fancy and is meant for people who walk off the beach, or local who are in sandals and want to escape tourist traps. It is what it is...just a cool laid back place to enjoy good beer and friendly people.
Wow... what a discovery.
Wanted to find a nice place to enjoy a beer and an appetizer on a Sunday evening before going on a cruise. Â Playoff football was on the TV, but not too loud like many of the other bars along the beach. Â The atmosphere was right, but really it was the beer selection that made us go inside.
Great music on the juke box, we order a schnitzel salad and some potato pancakes. Â They were all out of sour cream that night, so we asked for apple sauce as a side. Â The pancakes were so good, we thought about getting a second order, but instead ordered another round of beers. Â My salad was out of this world delicious, way way above my expectations from a unassuming little beer garden.
Bar tenders were nice, the crowd filled out and we decided to just stay there are drink for the rest of the night.
Amazing dive bar that I'll be back to on my next visit to Ft Lauderdale.
Great beer selection and hidden just off the beach. Â Too bad they charge 5 bucks for a warm foamy Yeungling and 8.50 for a Hopsecutioner microbrew. Â My bill literally had a question mark next to the price of the beer I ordered, which makes me think they gouge non regulars. Â $8.50 for a warm beer in a plastic cup! Â Seems like their taps have temperature issues, which is ridiculous for the price they are charging. Â The setup is divey, location is good, and 4th Dimension plays there often which is always a great vibe. Â It doesn't hold a candle to Fat Cats though.......
Review Source:If your looking for a dive bar right off the main drag give this place a try. Â I was looking for an off-the-beaten-path place for a quiet, non-touristy drink. This place fit the bill. The bartender was friendly. He set me up with a very tasty handmade margarita in a pint glass for about $8.
Review Source:Sketchy "beer garden", but if the German's had a name for this it would be "Strippssemallbeerenscmellin". Roughly translaned: "Stinky beer joint in a strip mall".
Clusters of scary bandidto types lurk in the alley and rear parking lot, the air perfumed by the cheapest of ganja and the permanent being given at the next door salon..
Great draught selection and very friendly service :)
This place is kind of hidden off A1A, though they have a big sign out on the street. It's a pretty relaxed place, and the amount of people there definitely depends on the weather.
It's a great bar to start the night out, have a low-key (less crowded) night, or get silly drunk on German beers.
