Bricciola is a cozy, lovely wine bar in hell's kitchen. I came for a weeknight dinner a couple days ago. The burrata w/ proscuitto dish that everyone raves about is a MUST. So delicious. We also came during happy hour so oysters we $1. Ordered a dozen which were very fresh and delicious. We would've ordered another dozen if we had the stomach space. I had the lobster risotto for my main which was absolutely delicious. The dish came with hearty chunks of lobster and was tomato based risotto. The dish was not heavy the way most cream based risottos are. It was perfectly seasoned and filling. My friend ordered clam linguini which was full of tasty garlic sauce. However, the dish paled in comparison to the lobster risotto. Seriously, the lobster risotto, oysters, and burrata w/ proscuitto are MUST trys.
This place is tiny so don't bother coming with large groups. Also, the primary seating is at a communal bar table so be prepared to get cozy with your neighbors.
I almost don't want to leave a good review because I don't want anyone to know about my new favorite spot in the neighborhood. Small and cozy, this place is a hidden gem. Although the portions are on the small side, everything we had was amazing. $1 Oysters, Octopus Salad, and the Steak were delicious. For the portion size it was a bit pricey, but it was so good its worth the splurge and you don't leave feeling stuffed and uncomfortable. Great for a bite before going out for drinks or dancing. Only downside I would say is the size of the restaurant. Not good for groups as there is just one communal table, and a bar for seating, with little chairs along the wall separation. I feel that we got lucky to get a seat as fast as we did, the place was PACKED. Overall, great place to take a date, or a catch up session with a friend. Definitely will be back.
Review Source:I went int to Briciola to have a glass of wine and make a reservation in person. Â I did this for a few reasons, I had read Rosie C.'s Yelp Review and wanted to avoid any miscommunication at all. Â I sat with a woman and her reservation book and discussed details. Â I asked if I could put down 8-12 and confirm closer to the date. Â She said that was fine, just make sure I called the Friday before. Â Just call the day before. Â She made a point to say several times that everyone would need to eat dinner and I assured her that would not be an issue. Â
I tried calling a few days and couldn't get through on the phone. Â I intended to go in Thursday night to confirm that we would be 12 for dinner but they called me before I could get there. Â The same woman who took my reservation told me that she needed to cancel it and wouldn't give me any explanation. Â I tried to get her to work with me since she was leaving me with no place to host 12 people two days from now and she just kept repeating, "I know. Â I'm sorry. Â I can't." Â
What a nightmare. Â I can't believe how unprofessionally they handled both taking the reservation, (repeatedly harassing me about everyone ordering dinner,) and canceling the reservation with very little notice and absolutely no explanation.
Where do I start? Briciola is this adorable small, but cosy Italian restaurant, with a warm, welcoming host. Since I'm a vegetarian, know this my fellow vegetarians, you will not be disappointed! So many delicious options to choose from! So now for the food,
started off with the burrata (without the prosciutto), impeccable texture, well seasoned, A++
then my favourite, the goat cheese in a marinara sauce. The flavours are rich, and they offset each other extremely well. make sure you get this one!
Then for the maincourse I got the wild mushroom pasta. Yummy! not your run of the mill sauce. Made in a delicious creamy flavorful sauce.
Although I will mention that the dessert was disappointing, our tiramisu wasn't fresh at all.
Top this off with their extensive collection of wine, and you're good to go!
I planned birthday drinks with my friends here after dying to go here for months...and I can't tell you how disappointed I was in the service.
The hostess and the bartender were completely lovely, but the accented manager who took my reservation and served my guests was blatantly rude and ruined my evening. When we arrived, he had a sour look on his face because our party was smaller than expected. I had attempted to call to change the reservation multiple times throughout the day, but the phone was off the hook. He blurted out the specials, writing them down on our paper menu, threw us a pen, and told us to circle what we wanted. When we presented him with the circled menu with our snacks circled (we had already ordered two bottles of wine), he threw the menu back at us, saying, "That's not enough food. That's a snack, not a meal." Well, it just so happened that a snack was exactly what we wanted. It would have been difficult to eat a meal at the overstuffed communal table anyway. As it was, we had to get into our friends' personal space to use our utensils. When we handed our "snack" menu back to him a second time, he took it and literally rolled his eyes at us. Fortunately, though, that paper menu came in handy when he brought us an appetizer he insisted we had ordered. We referred to the menu to see that we did NOT order that appetizer. He let us keep it, which was the one good thing that happened all night.
Overall, the food was delicious, the wine was tasty, the prices were reasonable...but that man ruined my birthday. If I return, I will make sure to sit at the bar--but only if that server is not behind it.
The two signature dishes: Burrata with prosicutto and seared octopus salad! Â Livio is a great guy and fun to talk to. Â We went for lunch and it was empty but I can see why it could be crowded for weekend dinners. Great selection of wines, and it could be a good date place, at off hours!
Review Source:Food was fine although portions were tiny and I left hungry because they forgot my ravioli. Waiter was almost comically rude, leaving mid sentence before I could order and throwing our glasses of wine at us like they were bowling balls. Â Hostess tried to make up for him but couldn't adequately cover the whole place. Â Generally abysmal experience.
Review Source:This is my kind of spot! I was catching up with a friend who I haven't seen in 2 years. She wanted to try this place out. The place is on the small side but the decor of natural exposed wood made it very cozy and relaxing!!
The Venue: Â It wasn't crowded when we went. But we did take the last 2 chairs at the corner of the bar. The place is small and intimate. And you didn't have to scream to hold a conversation with people next to you. There's shelves and shelves of wine on the wall. It's dark inside lit by scattered lights and votive candles. Bright enough to take good pictures with my iPhone.
The Food: For 2 people our bill came out to $52.80, not bad. We had a pinot grigio ($8), rose wine ($9), the Burrata with Prosciutto special ($16), Bruschetta Ricotta ($9.50), and half a dozen oysters ($6). I never had burrata cheese before and it was awesome with a hard outer shell and a soft creamy inside. It went well with the prosciutto and tomato. Definitely a must have. The oysters were $1 each and came on a platter of ice. I didn't care much for the sauce it came with. It tasted good alone with a squeeze of lemon.
I am a fan, so far. I only went once and it was very crowded, though I did appreciate the intimacy factor. (The restaurant is basically one room with a bar and one room with a big table where all customers sit.) The wine selection was great, as was the glass I chose (pinot grigio). I had the Caprino Alle Erbe, which was delicious, and definitely made me want to try their other items. The service was fine. Like I said, it was busy that night, and we suffered the consequences. Seemed like we were forgotten a bit.
Review Source:This place is a literally a hole-in-the-wall...space is quite limited. But, if you can land a spot, you're in for a treat.
We tried the octopus (special), lamb chops, steak tagliatelle (special), and tuna tartar. The octopus dish was amazing...probably the best I've ever had. The lamb was very nicely cooked and quite flavorful. The tuna tartar was fresh and was well-complemented with avocado. The steak tagliatelle a classic take on bolognese and very tasty as well. We had a 2011 cabernet sauvignon (forget the vineyard), but paired with our small plates very nicely.
For dessert, we had the ricotta cheesecake, which was not too heavily and went well with a solid cappuccino.
Best worth a return trip, with many likely to follow.
Briciola is the perfect place for a quiet happy hour. The space is intimate (read: suuuuuuuuuuuuper tiny) with a long bar or community table. If you have agoraphobia, definitely stay away. Lined by walls of vino and votive candles, you'll feel as if you've been transported into the most beautiful of basements.
The food and drinks are relatively inexpensive, albeit delicious. The burrata will melt in  your mouth (but not as much as I would).
I hate to write a poor review because I know how tough servers typically work, but the service was bad and the food was just slightly better. Â It's hard to see how this place has four stars if yelp is functioning correctly.
Service: Our appetizer was forgotten about and when we reminded them, it came after our meal. And they still charged us for it which was poor form.
Food: The food was mediocre. The wine was actually bad (we tried a few) - and at the price they charge that's not acceptable.
Ambiance: Â Prepared to be crunched up at the bar rubbing elbows with your neighbors. Maybe that's a fun vibe in the winter. In the summer, wasn't awesome.
Not at all what I'd expect from a 4 star place.
Great wine bar in an otherwise drab section of midtown west. It has two long rooms: one a bar, and one with a long communal table. Definitely on the cozy side, but who doesn't want to make new friends? The decor will remind you of a rustic, yet modern and clean, European bar/grille. Many bottles of wine to choose from across all price ranges. We split an Italian red which cost us around $35. In terms of food, they offer a variety of small plates along with cheese and charcuterie. All reasonably price between ~$9 and ~$16. We ordered the buratta, spicy artichokes, lamb chops, and mac and cheese. All nice portions and great flavors. My favorites were the buratta and artichokes. The lamb chops were on the rare side for our taste, but they re-cooked them to our liking. The mac and cheese was rich and tasty. It didn't complement our other items too well, but we enjoyed it nonetheless!
Great for a date or upscale happy hour with a small group of friends (if you get there on the early side). Lots of options. Hip atmosphere. Great prices. What more could you want?
Also, check out their sister restaurant, Aria, if you find yourself in the West Village. Similar atmosphere and identical menu.
I read the previous reviews and can totally see where some people are coming from.
Yes this place it VERY snug and tiny- Yes the service can be snarky- Â but all in all it has become one of my go to spots in the neighborhood. Their food is pretty good- do NOT get the baked clams- but DO get the lobster risotto and anything that is served with buratta. Wines are pricey but it is what it is.
The bartender does not want to be your friend- but he will pour you a glass of vino....when he gets around to it.
Wow! What a pleasant surprise.
We stopped in with friends for some tapas. We started with delicious - and properly-chilled - prosecco. A bottle was just right for the three of us. Followed by very good prosciutto served with fresh mozzarella drizzled with aceto balsamico, accompanied by warm country bread. Wow!
We then went with a plate of soppeesata and salami and heaven-knows what other god-given cures meats. YUM!
Price? $105 for three. Not a bad gig.
The place is warm and welcoming, the bartender smiling and encouraging. A definite new favorite in this neighborhood.
I really like the vibe of this teeny wine bar a lot, but there ain't no happy hour up in here. Â You lie, Yelp. Cheapest bottle of wine will run you about $32 not including tax, and a bottle of prosecco was like $50 - yeah, okay. Â I think the glasses range from $8-$10 which is pretty standard for a wine bar. Â Our bottle of Malbec may have been $34 or $36.
There is a communal table next door and round the bar seating on the other side (where I sat and drank my little heart out). Â Staff seemed pretty friendly, and the plates looked appetizing although I made the wrong move and hit up a Mexican joint near by. Â It got pretty crowded by 8pm on a Tuesday, and there were a handful of lovey couples canoodling near the bar so brace yourself.
Overall the vibe really sold it, and I had already had half a bottle with a friend by the time it got crowded and cuddly. Â And then we were out, but I'd come back for a quick bottle before dinner.
This place is amazing!
Ambiance, couldn't get any better. Service, fantastic. Food, all yummy plus I love tapas style Italian. Wine list, pretty good but growing.
I used to frequent this place when it was just a 10 seat bar, they expanded and now the secret is out. So get there early and don't go with more than 4 ppl... Or you won't have anywhere to sit.
Gone 20+ times and have always enjoyed the evening!
Tiny spot but absoulutely perfect! Â
They have an amazing assortment of wines and offer 2 kinds of prosecco as well! Â The food is spectacular and easy to share among 2-3 poeple. Â Nice portions for the price as well.
Superb staff who made us feel welcomed and not rushed even when we were leasurely enjoying our drinks past our dessert course and the 2 small rooms were startng to fill up. Â The ambiance is warm and romantic with the walls lined with bottles and bottles of wine and luminated with little tea candles dotting each shelf. Â It's a communal table setting so be prepared to get close and comfortable to the person next to you. Â It's a tight space but they accomodate everyone it seemed.
Food....we ordered several small plates to share since it was our first time here. Â Had the white asparagus topped with a soft poached egg that was incredibly well seasoned and delicious; the creamy fresh burrata surrounded by prosciutto, tomatoes and drizzled in olive oil and a touch of salt....perfection; warm dates stuffed with gargonzola and wrapped in speck was very very rich and delicius when it was still warm, when it got cooled not so much, but even the server had warned us to eat it up while it was still warm so our fault for taking our time with it; the meatballs were amaze balls and loved that you could actually tate the meat flavor! Â The texture ws smooth but not so smooth that it was gummy. Â Had the grilled octopus and again nice soft textures with alittle bite nice contrast between the sauce that it was tossed in with the new potatoe slices and micro greens. Â Finished the night with their silky smooth Panna Cotta...absolute favorite! Â It wasn't very sweet but so light and refreshing with a simple fresh blueberry sauce drizzled over it, it was the perfect ending.
Stupidly not thinking how much we were going to drink, we ordered their prosecco Rose by the glass when we should have just ordered the bottle but everything by glass is reasonably priced so it didn't break the bank.
Will be back to try the rest of the menu very soon.
I was just there for wine and appetizers with a friend. I really, really enjoyed everything we ordered and had every intention of returning there again. Until we were accosted at the door on our way out, by a manager who wrongly assumed that we had shorted our server/bartender on a tip. In fact his words were: "Was there a problem with the service? Because you only tipped 10% and the standard is 20%." My friend and I had split the check and each paid our portion of the tip in different ways. I paid mine in cash (even though I paid my bill with a credit card), and she wrote hers in on her credit card receipt. Our tip amounted to 20% of the total bill.
When we explained that to the guy, who actually had our bill with the cash and receipts in hand, he finally took a look and realized his mistake. While we would have still been annoyed even if he had apologized, it would have made a huge difference to know that he was contrite or embarrassed about his assumption. Instead, he basically shrugged it off, and told us that the server/bartender had asked him to speak with us.
I think it's tacky to harass someone regardless of how they tip, but if that's your style, whatever (although given how many reviews voice this same complaint it's clear that it's not really an approach that works). But you should at least know what you're talking about and have a stronger case than being better at getting mad than at basic math. Before that happened I would absolutely have gone back (and given a much, much higher rating), but now I will never go and will tell everyone I know to avoid it.
Had a lovely experience that was unfortunately ruined by the inappropriate actions of an employee.
Met a friend for happy hour at Briciola and loved the casual ambiance. Food was great. Service was on the good side of average. We had no complaints and had actually discussed how this would be a great location to get a group together on a regular basis.
As we were leaving the manager stopped us, partially blocking the door, and asked very confrontationally if we had experienced a problem with our service because we had only tipped 10%. Honestly, if we had wanted to tip 10%, that (while shitty) was certainly within our discretion.
In actuality, we had tipped our server 20%, but had split our tip between cash and credit card, which both the server and the manager failed to recognize for some odd reason. This tells me that the manager had felt comfortable confronting customers without doing minimal diligence to confirm there was no misunderstanding on the part of his server.
As a customer, I find it offensive; as a woman, I find it troubling that this person intended to physically intimidate me into providing what he erroneously believed was a more appropriate tip; as someone who worked in the service industry, I think this guy is an idiot to have alienated customers because of a failure to do third-grade math.
I really liked the food and the vibe of Briciola - the staff and kitchen are great. I have worked all manner of crap jobs and can appreciate a manager who is willing to stick his or her neck out for their staff, however, this individual's actions were highly inappropriate and unprofessional and unfortunately, I will not be returning.
Absolutely loved this restaurant! I just moved back to the city last week and it was one of my first stops back - after already eating here almost every time i've been here the last four times I visited the city.
The food is amazing - at least the dishes that each of my dinner companions and I have had. Gnocchi is one of the best I've ever had, but it is a little different as its in a lighter tomato sauce. The fettucine with mushrooms is great and super flavorful. The cheese selection isn't huge, but you don't need it to be with the great options that they have and the appetizers were great as well (beware, the mushroom bruschetta is really a big portion so you might want to save some room for the entree!)
The ambiance is romantic and candle-lit always but the noise level definitely varies. I prefer to go on weeknights since the weekends is crazy packed and since a large portion of seating is community seating, it can be hard to have a conversation with so many other people speaking over one another in a small-ish space. That being said, its still worth going to for the food.
Service is surprisingly good despite the cramped space and especially great when you go on a off-peak hour. I've had the same waiter a few times and he consistently is friendly and really useful with his recommendations.
All in all, its a great place to have dinner and probably my favorite place in all of Hell's Kitchen.
Cozy & solid wine bar and restaurant.
The ambiance is divine with a large communal table set in among racks of wine with tea candles. Â Might not be the best choice for a first date as we could hear the parties next to us but works great for an established couple or group of friends.
The food is solid Italian fare. Portions are hearty for the price so plan accordingly. We ordered 3 appetizers and 2 pastas for two and that was definitely too much. Â Standouts of our meal were the white asparagus & prosciutto (the poached egg is a perfect compliment) and the Mac n cheese was fantastic - rich with a terrific baked cheese topping. Â Also, $1 oysters were a great start to the meal!
Look forward to:
1) generously portioned and affordable Italian "tapas", including fresh $1 oysters
2) extensive wine list
3) cute, intimate atmosphere
Contrary to fellow yelpers, I actually thought the service was superb given the employees are essentially working in a closet-sized wine cellar. Community seating makes this a great place for small parties seeking a little stranger danger.
Food-wise, I expected lighter and more refined flavors from the dishes. No stand-outs worth mentioning, but was overall pleased with my dining experience.
Great little Italian wine cafe.
Excellent choice little eats all reasonably priced.
We had the crab salad, some cheeses, some toast and truffle thing, Â and some other stuff I can't remember.
I also had the mimosa which was kind of reddish-pink (blood orange). It was nice but I still prefer regular mimosas.
I'll def be back.
Service was good and this place is always crowded and they don't take reservations for small parties. Â Make sure to get there early and expect to be BFFs with your neighbors because you will be huddled next to them!
Can't expect how beautiful it is in theater district from the window of Briciola.
Why didn't I find Briciola sooner?
The space is a bit snug but is well worth the little bit of discomfort. It feels like you're sitting a wine cellar. The wine list comes on a small chalk board.
We ordered the octopus special and seafood salad.
We should have opted for a bottle of prosecco instead of individual glasses. At least I know now for next time.
Great little find in the Hell's Kitchen. Get the octopus appetizer, just outstanding. We also had the white asparagus and prosciutto, followed by the gnocchi and lobster arugula salad. Both were out of this world.
The space is very cramped so just be mindful of that. If you're lucky as we were, you'll make new friends with the people next to you. Do not miss out on this place!
Went to get a few drinks with my boyfriend last night. I was having a really nice time here until our bill came. We were sitting at the bar, right in front of the bar tender, and ordered 4 drinks. I think it's pretty standard to tip $1 per drink, so when the bill came and was ~$52, I decided to give more tip than I would typically, and left another $1. $5 tip on 4 drinks.
I signed my bill, and finished drinking my last glass. A few minutes later the bartender came over to me and said "excuse me, you made a mistake on the receipt." I asked where. He said "you only left 10% tip." I said, "well, I usually leave $1 for every drink at a bar (which I think is totally normal and I'd welcome any private messages telling me I'm wrong because...am I?)- I actually left 25% more than I would typically." He said "this is not that kind of bar," and then walked away.
A few minutes later I decided to change the tip - to zero - and looked for the bartender. He was outside, right in front of the bar, smoking a cigarette. I then watched him come in to pour people drinks without washing his hands or cleaning up after smoking his cigarette. When I finally got the bartender's attention, he refused to bring me my receipt and told me "it's done. no you may not have it. it's done." I was very disappointed in this very strange interaction. I went from having a pleasant evening to being mystified by the audacity of the waiter to suggest I might owe...$10!!?...of tip on four drinks that he did not need to mix, uncork, or even walk more than 4 feet to get to us. Totally unacceptable.
Perfect for a date night as long as your comfortable snuggling up to the stranger next to you at one of the two long tables set up in this tiny wine bar. Â I love the intimate setting and the rustic walls lined with bottles of wine. Â I mean, come on- wine is way better than art anyways, right?
The prices are on par with most Manhattan wine bars, but I was a liiiittle disappointed with the weak pour. Â I'm more than fine with dropping $10 on a glass of good wine, but I would like more than a few sips for that price.
All in all, a lovely little Hell's Kitchen nook that definitely deserves a visit.
I really want to like this place. I've been here twice now. It's one of the newer wine / tapas bars in my neighborhood, HK.
My first experience was average. The wine, the food and the service were all up to par, but certainly not breath taking.
My second experience was very lacking. Our Lamb Osso Bucco came out cold, under room tempearture on the bottom. When we complained, his French arrogance came out in full force and he seemed offended. He said would you like me to heat it up and came back with the SAME dish, just heated up, which we were not at all thrilled about. We opted to try another dish, and asked for the Lasagna (half the price of the lamb @ $12). He did bring us the lasagna, but only a very small HALF portion and still charged us for the $24 lamb which was inedible.
This is something I won't stand for. I politely paid the bill and left, but theres' no way I'll be back.
This cozy wine bar has more to it than excellent wines. Â
We didn't even get a chance to order off of the regular menu because all of the specials sounded so friggin' delicious!
Here's the rundown of what we got between the two of us:
- Raw oysters. The mignonette sauce is different than what I'm used to, but still equally tasty. Â At $1 a pop all night long, I'm not complaining!
- Stuffed baked clams. Â Ehhh, these were decent, but nothing to write home about.
- Burrata with prosciutto and freshly sliced tomatoes and drizzled with a balsamic reduction sauce. Â This is the stuff I'm talkin' about. Â Awwwwwesome! Â
- Gnocci with oxtail. Â Yummy yummy yummy, I got love in my tummy. Â The oxtail was rich with flavor and slow cooked until it was melt in your mouth tender. Â The gnocci was soft and chewy. Â Perfect combo. Â
- Souffle. Â Nice and chocolate-y, but slightly overcooked. Â It didn't have the lava yummy goodness in the middle. Â
Service was good. Â This place is always crowded and they don't take reservations for small parties. Â Make sure to get there early and expect to be BFFs with your neighbors because you will be huddled next to them!
All you need for a good time
Great food, great wine, great company.
That was our entire experience here.
We originally made reservations at Thalia's Kitchen a few blocks away for $1 Oysters, but we needed to kill time and ended up here. Â To our surprise, they have $1 oysters here too, plus heaps of wine selections. Â We decided to cancel our reservations and stay here.
On top of the dozens of oysters, we also ordered the Mac and Cheese, Octopus, and the meatballs. Â All great dishes but the Octopus stood out the most, Get on that!
And the dollar oysters are superb, meaty, fresh, and shucked completely with little to no chipped shells. Â
The only thing about this is that it gets crowded quick, and there is limited seats! Â Not ideal for Large groups. Â
I am definitely coming back because it's close to the office.
Most delicious and elegant meal I've had in a long time. Â And it was cheap! Â Amazing value, with each dish on the menu averaging $9.
We ordered our dishes tapas-style and split them, although many of them were big enough for a meal. Â The eggplant stuffed with goat cheese was small, but fantastic. Â Our other dishes were specials for the night and they were also amazing. Â It was my first time trying octopus and it was delicious. Â Not too chewy and cooked to perfection. Â The lamb was so tender that it just falls right off the bone and melts in your mouth.
Now on to the best part: dessert! Â We ordered the cheesecake. Â Not really thinking that it would be anything special, but, hey, I like cheesecake. Â BEST cheesecake either of us had ever tasted. Â It's so smooth and not overly decadent. Â Has a sweet, vanilla-like flavor. The top is similar to creme brulee.
The atmosphere at this place is really great. Â It's super small so I wouldn't recommend going on a weekend night or going with more than one other person. Â The dining section is basically a really long table shared with other people. Â You are surrounded by wine bottles lining the walls; you are essentially in a wine cellar.
Essentially, yes, it is a great place for a glass of wine. Â But you will be so disappointed if you don't get the food!
