I've been to Cafe Lou Lou three times now and I'm just not impressed. My first visit they crammed five of us at a small hightop bar table, strike one. Five adults ordering meals not just drinks just do not fit comfortably at those tiny tables. I ordered some sort of pasta dish and I don't clearly remember anything about it except that I had leftovers and didn't bother to eat them later. My next visit I ordered a calzone. It was ok. Not bad but certainly not the best I've had. My last visit I ordered a buffalo chicken pizza which again was ok. Not great not terrible just not particularly memorable. On this visit our server was also somewhat rude when we weren't ready to order right away and I actually think she went on her 15 minute break while we were deciding because I never saw her once between the time she first tried to get us to order and the time we finally did order. Overall I probably won't return. Too many other good places to go!

Went here on a Saturday evening - right before going to,paint at Uptown Art (shameful plug here). First time at Highlands location. Quirky is a good description of this location.  The entrance is inside an office complex hallway - kinda strange.  Food was good, very large portions.  Service attentive & not intrusive.    Prefer the St Matthews location for parking & ambiance.

Went here on a first date with a hipster douchesack who suggested the location more than once because "it's never let [me] down."

Fair enough.  Not really sure what that was supposed to mean, but hey, I've always had trouble translating douchesack.

The food was fine.  Not great, not terrible.  Good menu variety and portions were average to filling, but not absurdly large.  The service was incredibly attentive (almost to the point of being annoying - water was refilled after every other sip, etc., not a lot of "space" to just enjoy a quiet meal, despite the fact that the place didn't appear to be in a rush to turn over tables).  Who knows, maybe the server was one of the things about the place that never let him down.  Dunno.  Don't care.

Quirky and cheerful interior, with a fair number of disconcertingly bad works of "art," was pleased by the variety of beers (draft & bottled) - I'd probably go back sometime, if not for the risk of running into The Prince of Ick on his BMX again.

Metered parking outside seems to turn over pretty quickly - no problems finding a metered spot or wedging in to street parking nearby.

I used to really love this place--4-star territory love this place, but the last two times I've been I've been disappointed. Maybe I need to stick to the St. Matthews location because my negative experiences both occurred at The Highlands.

This used to be an automatic stop for me anytime I made it to Louisville, but now I wonder what I'm missing out on. I became similarly disenchanted with Lynn's Paradise Cafe. Changing of the guard in Derby city, I guess.

Interesting flavors and combinations, but far from phenomenal. High-priced mediocre.

I discovered Cafe Lou Lou shortly before I moved to Albuquerque, so every time we go back to Louisville to visit family, we hit it up.  The location, decor, and atmosphere make me feel like I've walked into a secret.  One of those off-the-beaten-path neighborhood bars that only the locals know about.  The service has always been exceptional and the food is pretty good.  Some of the dishes are average, but the meatball sandwich is pretty bomb.

I've only been to this restaurant a handful times but after trying something different every time, I can confidently say that it's mediocre. I dont mind eating low quality food if its super cheap, however the prices here are quite inflated. A small salad priced at $6 is absolutely outrageous in my book. Add to that, the sandwiches are greasy and the pasta dishes are all under seasoned and overly cheesy. The pizza isn't terrible but It certainly is not the best in town.

I've only been into the restaurant a few times but both have been less than memorable in terms of the food. Like other reviewers have emphasized, it's a cool atmosphere and interesting local art on the walls.

The real sell of this place is in the fact that they deliver and they make killer pizzas with locally sourced ingredients. Goodbye Papa Johns. Unfortunately, they're not usually very quick about it. A friend known for having people over to her house every weekend always orders a few pizzas from here for a cheap, easy and delicious dinner before any festivities. She definitely got me hooked on their pizzas. The Mediterranean is where its at--love that they add roasted eggplant to the more common ingredients always on Mediterranean pizzas. This pizza is also where I made the discovery that chunks of roasted garlic are actually pretty good.

Even though my rating says 3, it's really a 3.5.

    Off Bardstown Road not Shelbyville.

Make no mistake, the name says Highlands because there are two locations. I choose this restaurant for its convenient location, diverse menu, beer selection, and reasonable prices.

Unlike other Bardstown restaurants, this one is located a little further north enough that there is typically no wait. We had a group of 10-15 with reservations, but plenty of surrounding tables were open on a Friday night.

I now have a new craving dish in my rotation. I devoured the Chicken Portabella and Spinach Wrap. This healthier alternative was a delicious toasted flat bread wrap that kept me on my calories watching path while satisfying my appetite, and only costing me $8 with included side.

This location also delivers to nearby Bardstown residents, which has already proved beneficial for me. It was a hop, skip, and jump to the next Bardstown stop. I'll be lou- lou-looking forward to heading back

The Highlands has many great casual restaurants.  This is definitely one of them.  Italian/Cajon/Mediterranean fusion.  The Lou Lou pizza is fantastic.  Great wine list and heathy menu options as well.

I went for a late lunch today with a friend. I really like this place. It is so cheery and colorful inside!
Our server was very friendly and attentive. I got the Lou Lou Pizza. It's my kind of pizza. And super tasty! And enough for lunch leftovers!

Their soup selection is always unique -- last visit I tried the crab bisque (or some such title) which was a creamy, nicely spiced treat.  I still haven't settled on a main dish item that I love though.

I had to give this place a four.  But ONLY because of the bathrooms.  They are located outside of the restaurant, and for good reason.  They stink, like, well, exactly how you'd expect a stinky bathroom to stink.

The rest of the restaurant gets a 5 though.  Actually, mostly the bread pudding gets a five.  Maybe I should explain myself.

See, I'm on a quest.  Not for the holy grail.  But for something equally as glorious.  I'm on a quest for the Best Bread Pudding in Louisville.  (can I use an acronym? k, thanks, BBPL)

So, BBPL, where are you?  Every single time I see bread pudding on a menu, I ask for it.  Sometimes, even when I don't see it on the menu, I ask for it.  Some places are sneaky like that (read:  Hillbilly Tea).

This bread pudding is in the top 3, possibly even top two, but I'm having a hard time narrowing it down.  Other contenders are BBC on 4th Street (NOT on Main) and Varanese.

It simply melted in your mouth.  The glaze was rich but not overpowering and the texture of the bread pudding was perfect, with a very slight crispy but soaked crust to it.

Oh dang, I supposed to be reviewing the whole restaurant, not the bread pudding.

    The DAD (down and dirty):

Waiter = great, super knowledgeable, friendly, a bit over-attentive.
Decor and ambiance = again, great.  exactly how it sounds, a cafe.  bright green colors, cool pictures on the walls, dinette chairs, etc.
The Name "Cafe Lou Lou" = you know what, I'm not going to tell you what it stands for, because you should ask yourself.  The answer is interesting, and not at all what I expected.

So that's that, Lou it up at the Lou Lou.

It is a fun spot with a great vibe. I love the artwork and how it is incorporated into the menu. That being said, I've been here 3 times for dinner and always enjoyed it, but never been, oh wow, I have to bring friends here. The food is pretty good, best bet is the pizzas, and the prices are reasonable.

My first experience was a 4 star (I really liked the BBQ Pizza) but the last two have been closer to 3. The service was great. Super pleasant waiter. I had the mushroom/shrimp ravioli. Half of the mushrooms were great, but the other half were too tough to cut with my butter knife. I realize they are shiitake and a bit tougher in general, but that was a bit of a turnoff. And I liked the sauce, since I looooove mushrooms. But if they aren't one of your favorite things ever I would probably avoid this dish as that is pretty much what the sauce is.

I do still have to try the Potato and the Hot Brown pizzas. All in all - Worth checking out.

Tip: Half price bottle of wine Wednesday! The pasta servings are big, so generally the smaller one is plenty!

HOLY!! I just bit into a "bleu cheese polenta" dish... and my tongue is thanking me. As is the babe in my belly. I've been so hungry for the past two hours, so finally having a plate of food in front of "us" is heavenly.

Thought I was having a meeting at work today and I'd be ordering-in some Cafe Lou Lou's take-out, but it has been postponed and I find myself down the road from my work at the actual place... so far listening to a mixture of The Cars, Bowie, Zeppelin, The Cure, Phoenix, The Clash, The Doors and enjoying every single bite of my beautiful food. Before the plates hit my table I was thinking, "Are you kidding me?! I'd come here just to take in the freaking music selection!" ... but then I bit into the polenta dish. Awwww yeahhh.

    ~ twenty-five minutes later ~
... okay, I can see I'm not going to finish the "four cheese" calzone in front of me. I've not yet finished the polenta dish (as I'm slowly savoring it), and my stomach is already quite satisfied. The calzone is HUGE. And it's awesome!
This thing is definitely for two people... unless you are a 300 pound man.
The cheeses are lovely: mozzarella, fontina, goat & ricotta. The marinara sauce and the "crust" are befitting a hungry pregnant lady... but, alas, Ill definitely NOT be able to finish the task of eating the behemoth. Looks like my sweet husband & I have some leftovers to enjoy tonight and tomorrow. The bartender guy says I can just pop the thing into the oven and it'll be good as new. Yum!

Eat here. Don't be a big dummy.

Good God... they've just played Muse, Peter Gabriel, Lou Reed and "Under Pressure" by Mercury/Bowie!
This place needs it's own radio station!!

The shrimp & grits appetizer is rockin', too! Definitely something to try!

My husband and myself went to dinner last night and loved it. I loved the wine selection. We ordered an appetizer  and two entrees. The food was amazing and the server was great. We will be back!

Went to my first Meet-up event at Cafe Lou Lou.Dug the interior with the funky artwork. Upon entering, the hostess directed to where the group was seated,it was 6:30p on Wednesday and the place was already buzzing. It must have been the half-priced bottles of wine. That right,half-priced bottles of wine!
There were about eight people there and the server took our drink orders. Wine all around!Of course, they just sold the last bottle sauvignon blanc I ordered or I had to go with a New Zealand Sav. blanc. It was okay for the price. The server was friendly, helpful, and never got flustered even as some of the group was still arriving as singles.
He explained the specials and took everyone's food orders while taking the late arrival's drink orders.
Food came out promptly and everyone enjoyed what they ordered.I got the pizza special of goat cheese, sundried tomatoes, garlic and basil. The dough was crunchy and chewy, very good.
They are a fun group and it is a good place for a fun dinner.I think I'll be back, especially on a Wednesday!

Great neighborhood place. Pizzas and salads are excellent! Nice environment architecturally speaking.  Reasonably priced. Good Highlands (Douglas Loop) choice.

The vibe is fresh, the artwork is funky, and the service is friendly. I highly recommend the artichoke and spinach roll and the calzone is easily enough to feed two for lunch.

All in all, it was a good place for a Saturday lunch with friends. That said, it wasn't necessarily special enough for me to seek it out again over other restaurants in the area but I'm glad I went and checked it out today.

The food was amazing! I had the chicken carbonara and it was very good. I would give 4 stars but the service was bad. The server forgot several things not to mention totally dropped the ball on the flowers I had delivered there for my date... other than that, cool place, the interior was way cool and refreshing with a great menu... I'd like to go again and try other items on the menu...

I love this place. It's walking distance from my house and has a huge menu of really good food. Portions are giant, but leftovers are always fun. I love the soups and sandwiches. We've also enjoyed the pastas and salads. They have also done small, customized portions for my kids.
    I love that.

Mrs. V: AMAZING BBQ chicken pizza.

Mr. V: Their BBQ pizza has been called "crack pizza". I can't tell you about anything else on the menu, as there is nothing else I would have.

I've been to the other location (the old one that used to be a strip joint on Frankfurt Ave. and also when it moved to Sears Ave).  And though I haven't been to the Sears Ave. location in a few years, my mom said it was really hard to hear people because of the tin roof, which I wasn't aware of the last time I went there.

Anyway, we went with my family and had a party of seven plus a baby, my nephew.  Initially, we were in the back of the restaurant but my mom requested that we move to the bar area so that we could watch the University of Kentucky basketball game.  Go figure--my mom is a huge Wildcat fan!  We got a little attitude from the waitress when asking them to turn a certain TV to the game, but otherwise the staff were very accommodating.  I didn't realize that Cafe Lou Lou had a limited brunch menu, as in a quiche of the day and a breakfast wrap sandwich.  I ordered the wrap sandwich and had a side of steamed veggies (there were three choices and this was the healthiest, although with brunch, I would have preferred a fruit cup or something).  The wrap had eggs, spinach, onions, peppers, and bacon and was good but I could not finish it because it was quite large. My mom and grandfather ordered the soup of the day, a crawfish soup with a tomato base.  The soup was delicious and light and I would definitely order this if they have it when I dine here again.

The vibrant colors of Cafe Lou Lou make me so euphoric.  This kind of restaurant makes me want to move back to Louisville.  To me, Cafe Lou Lou and other unique Louisville restaurants make memories.  Cafe Lou Lou will always remind me of Sunday brunch with my family or a late night dinner with a good friend.

By the way, Cafe Lou Lou should create a t-shirt based on the interior design of the restaurant.  I would definitely wear it and be proud that I am from the River City.

I really like this place.  They offer a varied and quality menu of soups, salads, pasta, sandwiches, calzones and pizza.  The ingredients are fresh, the portions very generous, prices reasonable, and staff friendly.  Most of the menu items are healthful, which is a nice change from eating out in Louisville.  How can you go wrong?

The interior is fresh and bright, with (sometimes quirky) local artists on display.  There are a few flat-screens in the bar area, too, if you want to stop in for a drink and watch your game.

They also have a full bar, a dozen or so draught beers, and a fair wine list.  How can it get any better?  They deliver.  BOOM!
