No complaints here.  Great service right from the start.  I had the prime rib and  it was very good.  Not to fatty, just wright.  And my wife had some chicken encrusted wrap thing.  Sorry we forgot what it was called.  But she it's pretty picky and not one complaint from her. Â
Will be going back soon for the lamb, someone next to us had it and it looked yum!!
Over the years I've had many lunches here for business. Â My biggest beef with the place is how dark and depressing it is. Â It also feels like you stepped back 20 years (hint it really needs updating)
Service really varies. Â Sometimes it's quick and other times very slow. Â Food is just OK, nothing special and the menu is a little off for my tastes.
On the plus side it is usually fairly quiet (except for occasional piped in music) and it's pretty easy to get a table.
Better options in the area like Ciao Bella.
We moved to West Bloomington in 2010, and were looking for someplace that wasn't a family dining chain where we could relax, get good service, good wine, good food and unwind after another long business day.
It'd literally been over a decade since I'd been to Chez Daniel, and we had low expectations tied to prejudices around chain hotel dining.
We were SO pleasantly surprised that we now find ourselves going there monthly.
The service is friendly, prompt, professional and never hurried.
Water glasses are always kept full. Fresh bread comes regularly. Best of all, we've never had to hunt down our server when we were ready to go.
The wine list is global and has a good price range.
Portions are ample and a great value for the price. Steaks are always perfectly done. The lamb is beautifully seasoned. Specials keep the menu changing.
The decor is a little dated, but it's clean and well-kept.
We always leave relaxed, satisfied, and feeling well served.
4 Stars for food 1 star for Service.
My wife and I had a $50 Groupon for Chez Daniel, which resides in the lower level of an Embassy Suites in Bloomington.
We waited in the bar area for about 10 minutes before we had to ask the hostess if someone was serving the bar. She replied, "Yes" Another 10 minutes and a bartender showed up. Our bartender would seriously leave for 10 minutes at a time!
We ordered a Nordeast and we got a Philly Cheese steak, a Lobster Club, and a house salad with some bread.
After about 10 more minutes, the food came out and I got another Grain Belt. Â The Lobster Club was not too mayo filled and was extremely filling. The lobster was plentiful and the bread was triple stacked. A very nice club! It was like a deviled ham spread, but with lobster.
The Cheese steak was amazing! I had a few bites and the bread was scrumptious. Almost a full loaf of sourdough or baguette mixture that was just perfect! Â The cheese was melted perfectly and the steak was sliced just enough to make it one of the best sandwiches I have had in a long time. The nice chunks of peppers and mushrooms really made it a hit! I always have to wonder after being in Philly a month ago, why not just chop the crud out of the steak to make it like they do? Not hard. It was super awesome though here.
The coleslaw was spiced just enough to add a tang, and again, not too juicy full of mayo. The pickle spears were great as well!
My wife liked her side salad with ranch on the side. She asked for no walnuts. It came with them, but I chomped on them, no problem. Dippy, dippy into the ranch.
I'll never be back here because of the slow service and for $50, we got 2 sandwiches, a salad, and 3 beers. Not horrible, but it was definitely just a hotel restaurant.
They did have the Gopher football game on TV, so I was pretty happy. The service was just insane though. We didn't get my wife's bread until we were both done  eating though! She loved the bread though! Again they hit the food part out of the park!.
Again, the food was fantastic, the service was HORRIBLE!
When seeking a nice "dining" experience, it's the little things that mean a lot  in addition to excellent food and/or wine.
The name alone raises expectations for a fine dining experience; unfortunately they did not deliver. Â While their food was very good, their service, in general, was not.
First, the food: Â the warm baguette was light in texture with a crispy exterior and tender interior. Â The prosciutto-wrapped asparagus salad was served with some out-of-the-bag spring greens, a poached egg and a few walnuts with a balsamic vinaigrette and it was very good. Â After the salad, small dollop of strawberry sorbet was presented as a palate cleanser. Â It was intensely flavored and a bit sweet for my taste. Â
Since it was a Friday night, their special offering was Bouillabaisse. Â This was my first time with it and I really liked it. Â A light broth with all sorts of fish and shellfish, along with some chunks of potato and a slice of toasted baguette with a smear of (was it aioli?). Â Having had this dish once or twice while in France, my companion said that it's usually served with fresh ground black pepper. Â We were not offered any and just used the shaker on the table. Â Later, however, we saw our server offer fresh ground black pepper to the adjacent table.
As I said at the beginning, it's the little things...
Being shown by the hostess to our table, I found all chair seats sprinkled with crumbs and I gave mine a swipe or two to remove them before I sat down. Â Our server's assistant poured our waters abruptly and briskly, which seemed somewhat intrusive. Â He also tried clearing away our plates on more than one occasion before we were finished with them. Â
Our server brought our selected white wine to us in an ice-filled bucket.  Once she uncorked the bottle, our glasses were repeatedly waaay over-poured.  We found the wine stunted in its beauty because it was just too cold.  We pulled the bottle out of the ice bucket to give the wine a chance to warm up a bit and express its varietal beauty on our palates.  And it did.  Offering $50 (and up) bottles of  french wine, I think that they should be served at some temperature recommended for that type of wine (and certainly not a fully-chilled pouilly-fuisse).
Given the higher prices, I would hesitate before returning.
Mixed experience at Chez Daniel - would need a good reason to go back there for the price. Â Food is excellent and well presented, but the wait staff needs to be better trained to become a high end place. Â My wine glass was filled to the top on occasion, and they take your plates before your dining companion has finished her course. Â It feels like a hotel bar at times, not a high end restaurant, but the food was great. Â they need to spend some effort on their staff - not the fault of the wait staff, but of the management. Â Perhaps they need to take them to a good inner city restaurant where the staff is present but not noticed.
Our wine was very cold when served, much too cold for even white wine, and needed to warm up, but was nice after it had. Â They brought it in a champagne bucket full of ice, and I think it had been in a standard refrigerator beforehand anyway. Â Â
The food - excellent, about as good and well presented (platewise) as any in the area. Â The asparagus salad was very tasty - prosciutto wrapped stems with greens and a poached egg, almost as good as the entree. Â We both had bouillabaisse - excellent, excellent, needs just the fish heads to be as good as a high end European place, and as good as I have had around here. Â Thanks to the chef, many thanks.
If the management would take the time to educate the staff, this might be a very nice place to eat, but until they take the time to get their people trained, it is just another suburban place, but with great food.
Make this the 2nd time that we have WALKED OUT of a restaurant...(the other time was at Chili's in an airport).
We were so infuriated by the horrendous service and poor management that we decided this was not the place we would like to spend our evening. Please let me walk you through our experience...
When we first arrived, we were neglected at the front attending desk for over 10 minutes. If the restaurant were busy, I would understand. However, it is clearly understaffed on a Saturday evening. For a restaurant of this caliber and with "$$$" for cost, you expect a certain degree of immaculate service from the beginning. But based on the other reviews, it is apparent that this is a chronic issue.
We were finally seated at a table in a tight corner of a small room. It was slightly uncomfortable because a party of 4 was sitting so close to us that it really took away from a romantic setting. But we didn't mind that so much.
After taking our seat, we waited a good 15 minutes before we finally decided to tell a busboy to get our waiter's attention. We asked the waiter if he would recommend a drink on the cocktail menu. He asked what we liked, and we said anything that is a customer favorite and is strong, but not too sweet. He looked at us blankly and said to read the menu and see what we liked. We were immediately infuriated by his condescending tone, but we decided to play it out and hope the rest of the evening was not spoiled by this small detail. We ended up ordering the French Passion and the House Cabernet.
Guess what was in the French passion...4 fruit flies - pictures are added to the photos album. At this point, we just had it...poor service at front, poor service at table, drinks with incidental "garnish". For a place that you spend $50/person, this is not where we wanted to waste our money. We immediately picked up our coats and left this restaurant...for good.
We were here on Monday night to celebrate a friend's 60th birthday party. The food here is always great, but this time around the service made me feel like we really were in Paris. I had to ask for my drink to be refilled, and the next time around the waiter refilled everyone's drink except mine. I felt like I should be named Oliver and was being punished for asking for more.
The Ratatouille was exceptional, and was much better than the undercooked potatoes they served with my Chicken Marsala. My recommendation is to go to Chez Daniel Bistro for the Sunday brunch, where the food is fresh and you get to sample a lot more food.
We went there with the groupon. Wont make that mistake again. Â They seated us in some odd back room that felt isolated and unused. Â Service was OK at best.
The groupon was a prix-fixe menu so I asked to see the "full" menu so I could order additional items as I wasn't thrilled with the options..
The bread came out.. warm and tasty. Â Still no full menu. Â The wine we got with the meal was sub-par at best for a "french bistro" so we ordered a $80 bottle of bourdeux. Â That was good. Â I ask a third time for the full menu.. They still wont bring it to me! Â WTF! Â I WANT TO ORDER FOOD! Â they literally wouldn't bring the full menu to me!
I'm not sure if the attitude or lack of service was from having a groupon.. or what the deal was. We went on a Wednesday night, it wasn't very busy and yet service and the attitude was subpar.
The food was good  with the groupon making the price about right.  But the chicken roulade we had was nothing special.  We would never pay full price for what we got.  Disappointed with the options.
The snails were tasty but a bit oily as they were covered in a LOT of pesto sauce. Â Overdressed.
If we could get another groupon without the prix-fixe menu we may go there again to try again and see what the other reviews are talking about, but paying full price there is not an option after our experience.
Very mixed feelings and surprised to see four stars on average. Â We ventured in with a Groupon, knowing exactly what we'd be served. Â We were seated promptly and were brought the prixe fixe menu when we told them we ad a Groupon. Â Our server was very prompt and friendly. Â We chose the escargot with the chicken remulade and the pork chop.
The escargot was easily the worst we've ever had, it was in butter but with no garlic or spice of any kind, almost inedible. Â We asked our server if their escargot usually had garlic, and she told us yes, lots! We told her ours had none whatsoever. Â She said "oh!" but did nothing else.
Our entrees were pretty good. Â Good chicken/pork good sauce, nicely presented. Instant potatoes. Asparagus was fine.
Server brought two chocolate-dipped strawberries with the check but he busboy snatched them away we barely even saw them.
For what we paid I wasn't going to gripe, but had I paid full price ($107) I'd have complained in a heartbeat. Â Even with a Groupon we won't be back.
My wife and I checked this place out on a Saturday night and it wasn't busy at all. We still were seated in the way back by the door into the kitchen. The service was slow but the food was really good. Not sure if we should expect better at a hotel restaurant. We started out with bread and escargo, which I tried for the first time. It was ok, don't think I'll try it again, but the bread was outstanding. I ordered the organic dry aged pork chop for my meal. It was one of the best pork chops I've ever eaten! It came with asperagus and mashed potatoes that were fantastic. My wife enjoyed her meal as well.
Review Source:My hubby and I went here on a Saturday night! Upon entering the resturant we waited for a hostess. Finally, after a few minutes of standing there she showed up. We had reservations which i informed her of, she then asked if we had a Groupon! We did but not sure why she asked us that right away! She brought us to a table way in the back...My hubby commented that " this is where they put all the groupon people"...have to admit it kinda felt tthat way. We then sat at our table for at least 10 min before our server showed up. Then he handed me a pen and paper and told me to write my groupon numbers down... WTF... At this point my expectations were not very high. I was just hoping the food was better then the service .
The fresh bread was Amazing, warm and crusty. Our appitizer was escargo..it was very garlicly!! the salad with house dressing was very good.I did like the sorbet to " cleanse ou palet" . I orderd the chicken rulade and my hubby had the aged pork chops. Our whole plate was wonderful the mashed potatoes did not need salt, pepper, or even a gravy they were so good. My chicken was so moist and tender i couldnt stop eating it. We also do a chocolate dessert that is not even worth mentioning....
Over all if we had another groupon we would go, but we would never pay full price for the food and subpar service.
Wow .. very impressive!
We came here for early dinner last Sunday. It wasnt busy so we were seated right away. The service was great. The server and the assistant worked very well together. The server was attentive, and the assistant was very quick with refilling water and bringing out the amazing french bread.
We started with the mozz sticks. We couldnt tell if they were from frozen or home-made, but they were pretty good .. crispy on the outside with oozing hot cheesy mozz on the inside. I ordered Chicken en Croute for my main, and my bf ordered Chicken Roulade. After we were done with our app, soup and salad, the server brought out small cups of strawberry sorbet for us to cleanse our palate before our main dishes arrived.
Our main dishes very pretty good, and the portions were big. My chicken en croute was a chicken breast stuffed with sausage and then wrapped  with the pastry shell. A little saltiness from sausage, juicy chicken and crispy pastry shell went so well together, and the creamy tarragon sauce made a great addition to the dish. Chicken roulade was a stuffed chicken with red peppers, onions, spinach, fresh mozzarella, wrapped in prosciutto. This dish was really flavorful though the chicken was a tad bit dry.
This is what I love so much about this place. After we were done with our meal, we didnt order any dessert because we were so full. The server then brought us two huge chocolate-covered strawberries. It was such a perfect ending for our great meal.
This review is for brunch; I can't speak to the rest of the menu.
Brunch is a big buffet with traditional breakfast items (bacon, sausage, eggs, pancakes, etc) and savory stuff like marinated mushrooms, asparagus, and fruit. I am a vegetarian and didn't find much in the 'breakfast' area that appealed to me...the eggs benedict looked incredible, but each came with a slab of ham. Why can't eggs benedict just be eggs on an english muffin? Sigh.
However, the less breakfasty items were great. Loved the asparagus, the caprese, the mushrooms, etc. The dessert table was even better--mini cheesecakes and a chocolate fountain. (I'm a sucker for sweets, I admit it.)
I took away a star for the non-vegetarian-friendly eggs benedict but then added it back in for the atmosphere--it's beautiful.
Had a groupon for the brunch which was even better.
I have been there for several times and have always had a great experience. The dining room is a little on the dark side but it would be nice if you're there for a romantic dinner or get away since it's inside the Embassy Suites Bloomington. One of my favorite meals in the seafood salad, you get 4-5 different types of seafood on the salad then a nice raspberry dressing and the dressing was nice it wasn't over sweet or tangy. I also love the French bread they give you before the meal, so much that I usually end of taking half of my meal home because I ate so much bread.
As for dinner they have a great pot roast dinner with mashed potatoes, carrots and gravy over the whole thing. The roast beef melts in your mouth and then the carrots are dripping with the juices from the meat so it just makes you warm inside and feel like home.
Food was very good. Â We ordered calimari for starters - it was clearly fresh and battered and fried to order (waay better than the crap you're normally served when you order calimari in MN) and served with an awesome aioli that had just the right amount of kick. Â For entrees, I ordered the duck - it was cooked perfectly and served with a poached pear, a berry/port reduction sauce and veg on the side. Â It was awesome. Â
We ordered two entrees, one appetizer and two glasses of wine and the bill came to $100-105, which isn't crazy for the caliber of food we were served, but the ambiance lacked. Â The restuarant felt old (not in a good way). Â There was a wedding reception happening and drunk people were yelling from the lobby of the hotel, which you are constantly reminding you are sitting in the middle of. Â
If this were a standalone restaurant with nicer decor, I would have glady paid another $20 AND given this a 5-star review.
I have been to restaurants in hotels that have been fabulous in food and decor. This place failed on both accounts. The prices were very high, cheapest entree was $24, and the food failed to match. The decor felt cheap and it always felt as though you were in a hotel.
I ordered escargot to start. It was the first time I had ever had snails so I am not sure if they were well prepared or not. The sauce they were in was tasty and the snails reminded me of clams. My entree, lobster ravioli, tasted nothing like lobster or seafood. The mushrooms on top were pretty good as was the cheesy sauce but the ravioli itself was about what you would expect from Olive Garden. I didn't want Olive Garden food I wanted gourmet food.
For 2 entrees 1 appetizer and no drinks the bill was $71. Skip this place without a good coupon or expectations of fine dining.
Great French flavored restaurant in West Bloomington. I knew Chef Daniel Hubert a bit many years ago, who started this restaurant. A native of France, Daniel  cheffed at Sofitel before that, . The French Onion soup may remind you of Chez Colette. He has since sold it Chez Daniel. Rack of Lamb at dinner is a great choice. You can also ask for a plate of their homemade potato chips from the room service menu. The Lobster Club sandwich is great for lunch.
Everything is very good, not experimental, but solid. Stellar, friendly service and reasonable prices. Chez Daniel is located in the West Bloomington Embassy Suites (i.e., not the one near Mall of America).
