Great food
Small restaurant, gets busy, make a reservation!
The ceviche of the day was octopus and it was so good. Light sauce, avocados, tomatoes, and the octopus had the perfect texture. Not enough chips.
I ordered the salmon relleno which was supposed to be stuffed with crab but there was no crab at all. Their menu changes so I'm pretty sure I received the salmon en xico. Regardless, it was delicious. Perfectly cooked medium with a crispy crispy skin. The green rice was so moist. Fried plantains had an interesting white sauce on them, pretty good. A girlfriend had the skirt steak volcano and the presentation alone makes you really want to dig in. It comes out in a sizzling clay pot with lots of melted cheese. Big chunks of onions, couldn't taste the cactus, but the molcajete salsa is so so good.
Being fatties, we decided to split the Tamal De Chocolate. A corn husk tamale filled with an interesting chocolate cake/brownie thing, drizzled with a goat milk salsa topped with french vanilla ice cream and decorated with a pecan flavored rompope (similar to eggnog with rum). Worth the calories!!
Service was ok. They were kinda busy, but it was Friday night.
Cozy, cute, and BYOB. All key words you want to hear when describing a place that you're taking a date. If you're not clicking with someone at Chilapan it's definitely not the restaurants fault cuz overall the atmosphere's awesome for getting to know someone.
Food-wise...they have excellent guac, but be sure to order it spicy otherwise it may turn out a bit bland. The ceviche wasn't bad either but I've definitely had better and it varies by the type depending on the day. We ended up with the squid, which is probably the least desirable.
For main courses, tried the shrimp volcano and the salmon relleno. Both very tasty and for fine-ish Mexican food both were definitely priced reasonably. Would have been nice to have a house made hot sauce to top everything, but certainly not a deal breaker.
Overall it's a great date spot with casual atmosphere, attentive service, and pretty stellar food.
Had a fantastic Valentine's Day meal here. The inside is small and intimate, I was glad we had chosen a place where we could actually hear each other speak. We started with the spicy guacamole that was incredibly flavorful and had a fantastic kick. For dinner, we split the volcano with shrimp and steak and the roillito. There was so much going on here! The lava bowl came filled with piping hot proteins, a delicious salsa, veggies, and cheese. Loved that you could make your own tacos with everything inside. The rollito was incredibly tasty, had to fight for bites of this across the table. The skirt steak was cooked perfectly and the sauce on the outside really brought the dish together. For dessert, we shared these caramel crepes that weren't too sweet, but provided a great ending to the meal.
Unfortunately, everything was perfect until the very end of our meal. We had JUST paid the bill and were chatting when our waiter came up to us and said  "if you guys are done, we have another reservation waiting." WHAT. I'm admittedly terrible at dealing with these situations as they occur so we got up and left, but it made me really angry. We were paying customers, it was Valentine's Day, we'd been there for not even an hour and half, and there were four tables of couples still there who had arrived before us. I don't consider myself a complainer, but that boot out the door has really left me with a sour feeling towards Chilapan.
