My husband and I like to consider ourselves pizza connoisseurs, so when we kept hearing the name Danny Macs Pizza come up we knew we had to give it a try. Â After hearing about it from a few friends, I knew it was in a strange location and that you had to ring a doorbell to get in. Â What I was not prepared for, however, was the fact that it's not so much a restaurant, but a bar for the Amvets with a small counter space dedicated to placing your order. Â Word of advice: plan on eating this pizza at home. Â Needless to say, the atmosphere caught me a little off guard. Â
Now, on to the important part, the food. Â We went with a pepperoni pizza on traditional crust and an order of breadsticks (aka "crack sticks"). Â I was excited to find that they put the toppings under the cheese--I don't know why this excites me, but it does. Â The only other pizza place I've found that does this is Bearnos and I just think it makes a difference. Â Overall, the pizza was good, but not great. Â The crust was fantastic, but the sauce was a little too tangy and overpowering for my taste. Â
The crack sticks were the favorite for me. Â They come swimming in garlic butter and you know that just one bit will surely clog an artery, but it's a risk you're willing to take because it just tastes that good. Â I ended up only eating one slice of pizza, but somewhere around 4-5 of the sticks. Â
I wouldn't say that Danny Macs is my favorite pizza, but it is a nice change up and you can't beat the prices (or the breadsticks). Â It's definitely worth seeking out if you haven't been yet.
You'll find this pizza owner inside the Amvets building.
This Mac-Daddy Pizza maker really knows how to layer in the love for toppings, cheese, sauce, and flavor!
The cost is extremely cheep and the portion sizes are generous. I prefer the bread sticks swimming in butter and the works pizza, both are featured in the photos. There is no calorie counting at Danny Mac's so make sure you attend every third Thursday night when there is a Square Dancing class in the back!
This place is so weird. You know the slogan, "keep Louisville weird," well if anyone finds a place more eccentric than this, give me a holler bc I want to experience it. My first encounters with Danny Mac's were innocent enough, I ordered in their pizza and it was delish while reasonably priced. I must say I love their Philly Steak Sandwich with the Au Jus sauce, mmm mm mm. THEN, I took my girlfriend there for a Yelp inspired Valentine's Day and dawg-gone if it wasn't the best V-Day I've had since the second grade when I got three ninja turtle valentine's cards.
Let me get you there first. Upon first visitation you'll sort of ask yourself if you're in the right spot since it's tucked away in the neighborhood and attached to the American Veteran's hangout. Yes, you're in the right location. You then try to open the door, and find it's locked. Yes, you're still in the right location. You must ring the doorbell and get buzzed in if you don't know the secret knock. You will open the door to rambunctious border-line riotous goings on while everyone looks over their shoulder and sort of nudges their chins towards the guest sign-in book before turning back to the boisterous jokes and on-goings. From there you should be able to figure out the rest.
On my very special Valentine's day date, we were courteously escorted under the pink and red streamers to what I'm dubbing the heart room, where the magic happens. It was covered wall to wall with valentine's decorations and all the tables had a single red rose for the fairer of the pair to be dining there that evening. We were sat by the friendliest lady I've perhaps ever encountered who pleasantly informed us that she hadn't waited tables since college, about 25 years ago, but that Danny Mac himself had basically won an outlandish bet and she was obliged to give a helping hand, since Danny Mac's apparently doesn't usually give table service on a normal night.
We dined on pizza and handmade cupcakes from a local baker, and Bourbon and Sprites (the bar didn't have ginger ale) and we danced to the pre-quarter-fed juke box to classics like Merle Haggard and Fats Domino well into the night. Kind of surprisingly, we were far from the only couple in the heart room, which sort of blew my mind, bc I generally give the overall populace a lack of credit for V-day creativity. In the end, I think it was $20 for the pizza, rose, and cupcakes, plus $5 of that went towards a donation for the American Veteran's establishment that was next door. It sure as hell beat the socks off of fighting for a reservation and cramming into a stuffy over-busy underwhelming 'fancy' spot for a hallmark holiday. We had more romance listening to the wistful tunes of Merle Haggard over a slice of pizza served by a delightful woman who had no idea of the kitchen intricacies, I solemnly swear. Â We've gone back probably 3 more times since and wave to our waitress who I assume is a member. Love it. Keep it real Danny Mac's, I mean weird.
