Awesome music, cool vibe, unlike anywhere else in Chinatown. Gets packed on First Fridays.

Hmm. Dragon Upstairs! What a RAD name! Walk up those stairs, with gigantic blood red dragon mural... and it magically transports you back into time, Chinatown, circa 1930. Dark, mysterious, and what's around the next bend?!

The live jazz/blues music is top notch. I know since my brother-in-law, NY trumpet professional, Mike Lewis (name drop), plays here sometimes when he's in town. Couple of weeks ago, it was another group of cool cats, and it was as good as ever.
    Stage literally on your lap.

The music and vintage ambiance is probably 5-stars in my book, but the lack of bar "ingredients" and a somewhat pushy waitress lowered my review to a 4.
Basically I was told they were making me a special martini, but I ended up with something that tasted like a watered down cranberry seabreeze. Oh well, I drank it. Waitress seemed somewhat standoffish. Idk, maybe I didn't wear Axe cologne that night, or she just wanted to push the drinks quicker. Gosh, im so easy to please! Something about tall, young, smokey eyed Asian women... That- you owe me look. All good, I'll be back.

Tip: Yelp Check-In when you arrive and a $3 drink deal should drop in.
Also, Hanks Bar is immediately below Dragon Upstairs. Yes, walk upstairs (hence the name) to see catwoman. Meow.

Wonderful to find this place! A man sitting next to us at another establishment (OK, it was Side Street Inn...sitting at the bar, a grey-haired, bearded man) told us to check out Hank's near China Town...said there's always music playing, usually good music. So we found our way over there...and then followed our ears upstairs -- and man what a cool place! Four-piece jazz band was playing...great tunes...and bar was serving up some neat-looking drinks, which we soon partook of. The ambiance and vibe in there was just what we were looking for -- on our second-to-the-last night in Oahu. The waitron was super cute and friendly -- and of course very helpful ("Would you like another pineapple upside-down cake shot? There's no limit to our Yelp special...")

My husband and I had one of our BEST nights hanging out here in the Dragon Room. Stayed to listen to the second jazz band, for their local CD-release party. Place got packed - but not too crowded. Just all around fun and good times. :)

(Thank you grey-haired, bearded man who sat next to us at Side Street -- what a great suggestion!)

I love this bar.  They let several very axing local artists play.  Thursdays and Saturdays are my favorite days to go.  The live jazz is great.  Sadly no food and the bar is minimal.  It has a tendency to be cramped as its a very small venue.  Check their website before you go out because of there's an event that night you'll wanna show up early.

Our bartender was great! We ended up having a 'dessert' drink night with her. It started with her suggestion for the pineapple upside cake (literally tasted like pineapple and white cake), moving to oatmeal raisin cookie (which I didn't quite enjoy due to the cinnamon), a chocolate donut shot. Everything was delicious and she made them with care. The jazz was spot on for great ambiance and had great conversation with the musicians during their break. Small quaint hole that can get crowded and packed during the popular groups shows. Prices are a bit upscale for my taste, but the drinks were well made and worth the price.

So you say you wanna go Chinatown, but you don't really want somewhere too crowded.  I mean besides the nights when the whole crowd of Honolulu is in Chinatown?  Well, this is the spot.  Why isn't it crowded?  You ask?  Well, first off, you need to climb a whole lotta stairs to get there.  (Hello, it's called Dragon Upstairs, you didn't think it was downstairs, did ya?)  And secondly, it's hella tiny.  You get up there and bam!  There's the bar!  Walk a few steps and bam!  There's some seating, and hey, you can touch the stage!  And the space is so weirdly configured, the whole area isn't on one level.  You go up, you go down a step to get to seats, stage, restroom.  Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if you had to go a step up into the bar service area.  So if you are just stinking drunk, this place is a major hazard.  Yes, that means don't get too drunk here.  Or if you are, stay out.

The bar itself is tiny.  I'm just a beer girl, so I'm just happy with beer and haven't tried any mixed drinks.  So, I'm happy with the bar.  Otherwise, it's a bar in Chinatown that's upstairs.  Go because you like the music, which you should see is either a DJ or someone live.  You've been warned that it's tiny and you may trip.

I went here on a Tuesday night; to hear a friend play some music.

ATMOSPHERE: Cute trendy place. You go up a flight of stairs it's a small place with a bar, stage area and scattered seating. Sounds were good. Drinks to awhile to get to the table from the time of order. The Cosmo I ordered was nice!

PARKING:  Scary, nighttime and in the middle of downtown. You can park at Mark's garage for an expensive flat rate ($10) I think. Or there is parking in the Chinatown garage, where I parked, it was a scary walk back to my car; only because I couldn't go back in the door I exited onto Nuuanu ($3).

It was nice, would I go back? Yeah, cozy, cute great music.

The venue itself is just OK.  The place is small, booze is a little pricey and the beer they served me was warm...a big NO NO.  But i was not there for them I was there to support a friend doing comedy.  The comedy would make me go back not so much the establishment itself.

Whoa whoa...I haven't written a review on The Dragon Upstairs, yet?!  Well, thanks Yelp for letting me know, because this little place shouldn't be left out.

I actually stumbled into this place on accident one night a while back.  I thought that it was where my friend said she was (an upstairs bar in Chinatown...she was too drunk to remember she was in 39Hotel) so I walked in. No cover, first of all, and when I got upstairs I was greeted with the sweet sounds of jazz.  I was so intrigued that I forgot about my friend and I freakin' stayed a while!

Since, I have been there for first fridays (crowded, but cool to watch the bands), for indie hip hop groups (that was a really fun night), and for a few other occasions.  It's a bit offbeat, so if that's how you describe yourself as well, you will probably enjoy it.  The drinks aren't ridiculously expensive (there's a drink deal on yelp, also that I bought), and the vibe is laid back and chill.  Check it out!

This place is a pretty cool little bar that has "unique" live music and a fun atmosphere. I have been here several times, and the experience is different everytime.

The first time I went here, there was some smooth jazz playing and a woman scat singing. The crowd was pretty full, and it was a very enjoyable time. The crowd was very hip, and I felt like a bit of a square... I have been back a couple of times with a similar caliber of entertainment, but there have also been some oddball experiences...

I was out with some friends on the First Friday a few weeks after the first time I had been there, and as we sought refuge from the unwashed masses on the streets, I suggested that we duck up into the Dragon Upstairs. This was an entirely different experience all together. They had a DJ spinning house music on the stage, and there was this girl wearing a tank top, booty shorts and furry boots shaking what her momma gave her on one of the small tables. It was really awkward, made worse by this random old guy nudging me with his arm and inquiring as he gazed up at the floozy on the table, "Is this place always like this?" I replied with a somewhat too serious, "No."

I stopped in here a few weeks ago, and had an equally unexpected time. We came in as the first band was taking down their equipment, and used the opportunity to get a prime seat as the crowd was clearing. We then watched this australian guy set up the equipment for his band for about 90 minutes. It was out of sheer curiosity that we stayed, as I kept expecting him to be done. He tinkered and assembled feverishly, and every once in a while there would then be a loud pop and some sparks flying somewhere and he would frantically readjust his rig. He also must have done this silly little "checkity check" beatboxing routine about 78 times, to get the sound right of course. After the rig was assembled he was joined onstage by a woman with an electric violin and another woman who was to sing. They played a couple of songs, and sadly even though the sound was checkity checked multiple times by the australian dude, I had trouble discerning any semblance of a lyric from the woman singing. The woman playing the violin was truly talented though, and these guys had enough sense to showcase her on several occasions during their set.

Then things got WEIRD, the initial lineup took a break except for the australian dude, and he then invited this crazy looking euro-dude with shoulder long blonde hair and big boxy glasses to the stage. I am not really sure if I can accurately describe it, but the only thing I can come up with is "Spooky Porn Music." The australian dude was playing funk guitar while the european guy, who I now decided looked like that one bad guy in Die Hard, played a theramin. A theramin is an instrument with two metal antennas that sense the position of the player's hands and control oscillators for frequency with one hand, and amplitude (volume) with the other, so it can be played without being touched. (thanks wikipedia) This continued for about fifteen minutes as the crowd slowly started to sneak out. It was by now almost midnight... My companion and I waited for the set to finish, and then snuck out of there too.

I wil say that it is probably hard to find talented people to play such a small venue, but when you do catch one here it is really a treat. The decor is awesome, it looks like the kind of loft apartment that I imagine exists somewhere in the trendiest part of Shanghai. The drinks are not too expensive, and they have the higher end of beers for you to enjoy. I really like this place, and I am always excited to bring someone who hasn't been before.

I am a fan!!.. Spent my last night in Honolulu here listening to good music. Live acoustic R&B band. (<a href="/redir?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fpages%2FMike-Tulba-Acoustics%2F236261869801203&s=262bb9f3d25a7befcab0df7492645f68c00970e3e1874fb28bfe01f3f2ec3c95" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">https://www.facebook.com…</a>) They were awesome!. Cheap drinks. $5 Crown, Goose, and something else I don't remember. But yes.. Come out on Wednesday nights for good music and chill lounge atmosphere. There is a dj that spins good music after the live music.

"This is brought to you by the cool cats at The Dragon Upstairs. Our favorite moody downtown spot for smooth jazz and that ain't no jive."

The gigs they book can really lay down some hot licks. It is a real scene and there ain't nuthin' square about it. Sometimes you gotta pay a couple clams to watch some funky bass licks, so best check their website so you are in the know, ya dig? And if you see me down there, hand me some skin and let's get down and boogey!"

A cozy little respite when wandering about Chinatown late at night. Cute decor that is a cross between opium drug den and a jazz club. Small but large enough that it's comfortable even when it's packed. The only place where I've had a genuine midori sour so I always have to have at least one when I'm there. Prices are a little pricey for Chinatown standards but the drinks are fairly strong. Just not a place that is for the type who wants to get knees up. It's pretty much devoid of much service besides a bartender but it really doesn't matter since it's all about the atmosphere, decor and live music.

It's the only place that so far has made a Midori sour correctly. Just for that I'll give them an extra star.

This place seemed like a nice little gem and had plenty of jazz music. The only problem I had with this bar is that the music really reverberated around the room. The music really wasn't that loud but because of the acoustics I could not hear my friend trying to yell in my ear while we had a conversation. Definitely a great spot to stop in and have a drink while you listen to some good music but not a great place to catch up with friends.

I love this place. The only reason it's getting 4 stars instead of 5 is because the bar is limited and the drinks are a little pricey.

My boyfriend and I stumbled upon this concealed, uniquely decorated jazz bar several months ago and make it back there at least once a month. The music is great! It can be a little loud so if you were planning on having an in depth conversation with someone, this is not the place.

The bartenders are nice as are the cocktail waitresses. If you are planning on stopping by on the weekend, it always helps to get there a little early, around 9ish to get a good spot.

I noticed that they've recently started serving pupus, however I haven't them. The tables are a little small which would make eating at them a little inconvenient in my opinion.

    Final verdict: I'd recommend.

The Dragon Upstairs is perfect for a date night. It's small and intimate! Finding parking was a pain in the booty so be prepared. The band that played wasn't my kind of music (it was a mix between hawaiian music, folk, reggae, blues), which is why I gave it 4/5 stars. Also, there weren't that many seats, this place is really small.

If you were my friend and you asked me where to go tonight I'd recommend this place!

Went here a couple times and i have to say it wasn't the greatest.

First off this place is small with limited seating and is located upstairs from Hanks.  The stage and the bar combined take up most of the space.  when i went here for the first time there was a 2 drink minimum which is not my cup of tea.   The only places i know of that have drink minimums are strip clubs in Vegas.   And the drinks were watered down and pricey.

The 2nd time I came here was for the Yelpmas party.  besides that I don't think i will come here again unless one of my friends has a party there.

The Dragon Upstairs is a sexy little bar. It's a bit tucked away, just past Hotel Street on Nuuanu. You do have to go up some stairs to get to it (obviously), which can be perilous depending on how many other stops you've made throughout the night.

Because it is so small, you will likely make conversation with those seated near you. If you're friendly, that's a plus. The owner and bartenders are also welcoming.

Definitely check out The Dragon Upstairs if you're in the mood for some place intimate and cozy!

This is definitely a place for a much more mature crowd.

A nice hidden spot in Chinatown that surprisingly gets really crowded as the night goes on, but has a great vibe.

There's live music, I'm not a jazz connoisseur, but from those I know who are, this place is said to have the best jazz.  All in all though, the live music is on point.

They don't serve food, but you can bring your own in if you like.

The drinks are classic standards and there's no beer on tap.  Not a place where you're going to find new drink creations or a microbrew.  But sometimes all you really need is a good gin and tonic or dirty martini!

There's limited space, so for a seat, arrive early.  You will definitely enjoy your night if this place is one of your stops.

    Yelp challenge 365 # 35/365

I rarely do the night scene but for some reason, this week was my week to make up for all the days undone.

End up at the Dragon Upstairs. Mind you, Friday (First Friday) would have been a great day to go.... but.... had other plans and .... don't like crowds... so, end up there last night.

Parking always seems to be the problem for me these days. Since I rarely frequent the area, I wasn't sure who / which facility provided valet service... nor did I know where to park in the eves... I end up parking at Pali Shopping Center and walked down a couple blocks to the Dragon Upstairs.

Cut and clean LITTLE bar. good entertainment although I didn't get the name of the entertainer... it was good none the less.

The bartendering group is relatively friendly and the service was great. I think their name for an Apple Martini is Green Dragon... or at least that's what I thought I overheard.

Cute, clean, comfortable...just a few reasons for me to re-visit my schedule and get to the Dragon Upstairs more often....

While I was a tad wary of the big, glittery dragon on the wall (must be the dragon upstairs) that screams Asian fetish, I guess it gets a pass because it's Chinatown? In any case, I guess it just gets a pass because this place is actually pretty cool and the music on First Friday was pretty legit.

The only downside: it's small and cramped. But the upside to that is that people seem to not come here as often because of that very fact (or we just got there a little bit later around 11:30). there are plenty of tables to sit at and some space at the bar to just chill and watch the dancers. But I suggest you get your groove on because the DJ was pretty good--playing the kind of hip hop that 93.9 is trying to resurrect with nostalgia. Got a handful of Beyonce, Sasha and even some Keak da Sneak! It's a rare occasion to get hyphy in Honolulu, but when you can, you better take full advantage.

While I haven't been here yet on the jazz nights (nor did I try the drinks but the bartenders seem to know what they're doing) it's definitely the perfect ambiance to have live music. Small and cozy, I think this is one of those hole in the walls that gets severely missed by Chinatown patrons. However that may be a good thing because you won't be fighting the crowd like you might at Indigo. Also at which you would be paying a $10 cover charge for ladies, and $20 for guys (what is this, Vegas??) At the Dragon--you pay zip.

So I recently moved home from living in NYC and Miami and have been missing nice Jazz and Blues clubs.
Well I just recently found this little gem right above Hank's in Chinatown, The Dragon Upstairs, it has filled my empty void...
This is a fun little dark, quaint, Jazz/Asian decor Jazz Bar, smack dab in the middle of Chinatown.
I've been twice now and have received consistently good service and Jazz both times and really enjoyed myself...
If your downtown and need a nice place to relax for a little while check it out.
    Enjoy...
TIPS: Usually a cover of $5-$10 for the band( so come early ;) ), Corner seat on the side of the band allows for conversation as your not in front of the speakers, checkout there website for what bands are playing.

So I learned that this place used to be a tattoo parlor before it was a jazz bar, and that the dragon on the wall when you come up the stairs is from that time.

It kind of looks like a one of those box nativity scenes you see at Christmas but Chinese and no Jesus. It's cutesy, chic, and red, red, red.

I miss the bartender with the toupee. I don't see him round much anymore.

Jazz clubs are few and far between as are hole in the walls that don't look like they should be shut down for a pointed disrespect of basic hygiene.

Yet somehow, The Dragon Upstairs has proven itself to be a lovely little hidden gem tucked away right above Hank's.

No it's not the cheapest watering hole in Chinatown nor is it anywhere near the largest (I'd probably say easily one of the smallest bars I've been to) but it's got a level of intimate class that is, as far as I've experienced, unrivaled on this island.

Not the greatest spot for large groups as it is a very small space but perfect for dates or going out with just a few friends who would rather listen to some cool jazz (the last band I saw there was Mango Season - they're awesome!) and have a couple drinks (every night I've been there it's a $5 cover and a 2 drink minimum).

I love the concept of this place, which is Hank Taufaasau's second addition to the Chinatown scene. It is an instant classic.

The Dragon serves up some sweet standard jazz, good wells and well-priced wine and beer, even Prosecco to boot -- my version of party in a bottle.  You come here to soak up the music and be transported back to an old-time speakeasy. Musicians range from all over. On any given night you can listen to some of the best local jazz players to transient talent from all over the Pacific Rim and beyond.

Before Hank transformed the second floor above his namesake bar (Hank's), it existed as Dragon Tattoo. Hank got the idea for the jazz bar after a visit to California. He was roaming lounge haunts and stopped in to a neighborhood jazz pub above a local bar, which later served as his inspiration.

When the Dragon Tattoo did not renew its lease, Hank got to work to realize his vision for a neighborhood jazz spot. The bar's decor is a hodge-podge of left over sets from neighboring Hawaii Theatre. It's parlor-style seating is probably repurposed from other venues with heydays now well into the past. But he kept the name and the dragon mural. Good thing because it really sets the tone for the whole place.

It's a great place to party with some of your favorite friends and is available for private gatherings.

Note to hipsters: this place is about classic music, charm, drinks. Nothing frou frou here. But if you have a great cocktail concoction and can keep the ingredients and portions in your head, I'm sure the barkeep will try to accommodate your cravings if they can.

I made back again recently on a Saturday night. I wish I could call myself a Dragon regular, but I don't get out too much. So, I'll just have to settle for aficionado status if they'll let me.

This was the last bar we hit up on a seemingly endless circuit of Chinatown bars on a Friday night. We got there with just enough time to have a couple of $6-Kettles before 2am closing.

There was a band, Captain Kaos playing punk/ rock 'n roll.

The Dragon Upstairs occupies a tiny area. There's only enough seating at the bar for about seven people and the surrounding tables offers another maybe 25 squished-in people.

The decor on the wall is tastefully tacky, like if Jimmy Buffet went tchotchke gewgaw dingbat bibelot gimcrack knickknack Asian. (Go head and read that sentence again.) It's like a hipster's wet dream.

There is one female and one male bathroom stalls.

Like all the other closet bars in the area, there's only street parking or you can pay a limb of your choice to park in a paid lot. Hunt for street parking. It's worth it. Your walk to the bar will be spotted with sightings of benevolent street denizens.

The Dragon Upstairs should be renamed The Cougar Upstairs because after you meander up the stairs you'll find a quaint place populated with cougars.  I use that term loosely here, because "cougar" refers to an attractive older woman (40s, 50s) on the prowl for younger meat (think Ellen Barkin in Ocean's Thirteen).  The cougars here looked more like Margaret Cho wearing leopard print clothes, before she bleached her, uh, chocolate star.  (For single men you're better off going to Bar 35 where the crowd is younger and it's dark enough inside so all the wahines look pretty, even if they're not.)

    Anyway.

I like this place.  Like others have mentioned, it has a nice ambience and I thought that the drinks are not that bad in terms of price (compared to equivalent places in the bay area).  It's also old school in that all soda is by can and not fountain.  We went on a Friday night and watched Ginai and Pierre, who were pretty good.  Pierre--a one man band who plays several instruments simultaneously--is a dead ringer for Kramer from Seinfeld, in both phenotype and mannerisms.  We sat next to Ginai's husband at the bar and had a nice convo and met her and the owner (Hank) briefly as well, so there's no pretension at this place.

    Couple tips:
    1)  Come early (before the specific performer you want to see) because it's *sitting* room only.  If you don't have a seat you're relegated to standing by the entrance with all the single men.  (Unless, of course, that's what you want, cougar lady *RAWR*)
    2)  Bring your best kung fu grip and sacrifical friend (to leave behind for the ragamuffins as you run away when they try to jack you) because you still have to navigate through ghetto Chinatown to walk to this place.

If it wasn't for the unnecessary $5 cover charge I would rate this place the highest possible, but for everything else this place gets Franksabunched with 4 stars!

Stumbled across this place after a delish dinner at  Indigo's on Saturday.  OMG!! I LOVED it... helped that the jazz quartet were FANTASTIC.  I wish I could remember their names, but they play every Saturday.  Awesome musicians.

Someone else said it has a San Fran feel and I agree.  Very hip decor, cool vibe, these neat masks lit from behind.  Even the bathroom was cool.  Someone told me it is owned by an artist and I would believe it.  But da MUISIC!  Loved it.

I agree that it is a little annoying that they charge the cover after you order (we thought we were getting away with something ;-)   but as soon as the band started I didn't care.   Definitely worth it.

First drinks were $4?  But then $8 after that?  Dunno.  At that point I didn't really care.  Too toasted and lost in the music.

stumbled upon this place during a block party in china town.  The atmosphere reminded me vaguely of Temple of Doom with with smooth jazz rather than cabaret.

A very small cozy space.   6 or 8 beers are displayed above the bar but they were out of one of them.  $6 for a corona.  7 dollar mixed drinks according to their menu.

Bar service was kind of slow, but the floor service seemed decent.  I loved the decor.  It is the only bar I've been to in Chinatown that actually looks like it belongs.

They had a jazz duo performing for $5 cover.  My only complaint is that they should charge the cover at the door rather than wait until you're seated and order.

The duo was enjoyable.  Especially Pierre on the piano/bass/trumpet/trombone.

This is not recommended for groups over 4 or 6 as the space is very limited.  nor is recommended for party animals that want to set the town ablaze.  Its more of a chill type location for people who want to be able to enjoy some ambiance, jazz music, and actual conversation.

I left my heart in San Francisco and it found it's way back to Honolulu...at The Dragon Upstairs!

This place is so neat.  It sure reminds me of a place you would find in San Francisco.  I read an article about the place before I visited it.  Hank, the owner had a dream, and he made it happen with a lot of hard work in creating this place.  He actually made the bar himself.  Nice job!

Their usually is a $5 cover, that is added to your bill when you leave.  The drinks are a bit pricey for the area, but this place is worth it.  The wine selection is small, and the price runs from $7-$9 a glass.  But the pour is generous.  For the price of 3 glasses, it might be best to order the whole bottle.  About $35-$39.

As for the drinks. All top shelf liqueurs.  The drinks start at $7 but once again, generous pours.

I am not sure if the place is open everyday.  But you can bet it will be open mostly toward the weekends.  I went on a Thursday night and it was empty at first.  Some people showed up over the two hours I was there, and there was a quartet playing all night long.  I even got a chance to chat with the band members and the owner.

It is a nice place and I hate to see it go away.  Support your local Downtown bars and musicians.  Jazz used to be very big in Hawaii years ago.  It died but is slowly coming back.  Not too many places left, so for those jazz lovers, or anyone that has an appreciation of music, come on out.  You will have a great time!

This is one of my favorite hideaways, but...

    I've never eaten here...

    I've never drunk anything here...

I've never even sat down (it's been packed wall-to-wall every time)....

What can I say, it's just that  c o o l  of an intimate JAZZ infused red/black straight outa SoHo space.

Nice little bar above Hank's on Nuuanu.  Nothing about the bar itself is particularly special, however it is nice to see a place avoiding the hipster vibe that seems to be invading downtown. The beer selection and cocktail menu is poor, and the staff is overworked, but the music is nice.

A good place to go to when you need to get away from the "beautiful people" at Bar 35.

Just a word of warning, this place is small and gets packed!

I loved this place, and I'm having a hard time pinning down WHY.

The wine selection wasn't huge, or great.  The prices weren't cheap (not too expensive though).

But I looooved the ambiance, (the decor was nice...and the chair selection was awesome) and the wine wasn't bad, or expensive.  Over two glasses of wine the crowd went from laid back, bare, and older to youngish and crowded.  There was even a woman who I swear was wearing black vinyl with a fluffly small dog in her lap.

The piano was live, and fairly unobtrusive.  I get the idea that if I'd had a request and a tip he'd have played me something special.

Would love to go back, and if I ever think "hey, let's go somewhere and pay for a drink" this place will top the list.

I LOVE the decor.  Reds and blacks.  Super comfortable seating.  I'm so sad that I missed jazz flute night!  Thanks for the tip!  I love weird and unusual things!

The time the owner was showing us the place (he also owns Hank's downstairs), it was "girls night".  The guys at Hanks were saying they were "Lebanese", checking them out as they went up and down the stairs.
