Arguably the best patio bar in Morristown, the Dublin Pub is a low-key place to enjoy a cold beer and pub food, and during the good weather months, to do all of that al fresco. Â Nothing gourmet here, the menu is all Irish favorites like shepard's pie, corned beef and fish & chips, plus American Irish :) favorites like hamburgers.
On our most recent visit everything went right. Â Plenty of open tables on the patio, check. Â A cool and friendly server, check. Â Kitchen cranking out orders in record short time, check. Â Hot, tasty and reasonably priced food, check. Â Solid Guiness pour, check check! Â Definitely worth four stars.
Bangers and mash was five medium-small sausages on a generous portion of home-made smashed potatoes, with a bonus of a few onion rings on top and all slathered in a mild brown gravy. Â I loved it, reasonable at $12.
An open-face hot roast beef sandwich brought thickly sliced, very likely house-roasted roast beast on bread, covered in brown gravy, with a side of perfect french fries. Â Hard to beat that, especially for $11!
A Caesar salad with grilled chicken was adequate, the dressing straight from a bottle, just average at $12. Guess that salads are not Irish LOL!
Why is this patio so great? Â Because unlike all the other bars in town, here you're not sitting on a sidewalk with a truck tailpipe 5 feet from your beer! Â The pub is on a quiet side street, and the outdoor space is well set back and enclosed by a stone wall. Â It's like an oasis with good beer :)
Oh it's not all perfect here. Â They simply refuse to serve a pitcher of beer, what kind of Irish bar is this!? Â A pint of the good black stuff is up to $6 now, that kinda hurts. Last but not least, absolutely no craft beer on tap at all, just the huge Irish and American names.
A burger is served here, inexplicably, without fries. Â The menu says make any burger deluxe (add tomato, lettuce and fries) for just $1.50 more. Â Silly policy, who wants a burger without all that?
Avoid this place when the community theater has a show! Â You can just forget it. Â
I first tried the Dublin at least a decade ago, this review is long overdue.
So we had a very bad experience today. The place was kind of dead and there was no reason for the mistakes.
First off our apps and salads came at the same time as our entrees and everything was ice cold.
Hot open Turkey with gravy and fries. Fries were ice cold and turkey was cold. Unacceptable. It was sitting out a while because the gravy was congealed.
Turkey club with fries and gravy. Ice cold fries and gravy was flat and congealed.
Bangers and mash. The mash potatoes were ice cold and the onion rings were cold as well. The bangers were ok. Nothing to write home to Ireland about. Or Morristown.
The blue cheese wedge was excellent but it was brought out two minutes before our main course.
The beer was good but this place was a total disappointment. Would skip and try a different place. They have five Irish bars in the area and to serve three cold dishes and miss on each one is not acceptable.
One of the managers Lee came over and took the drinks (two sodas and a beer). What a nasty manager. A real shame. Potato famine to Lea and her business !
Originally planned to go to Brick Oven up the street, but it was packed so we figured 'we like Blackthorne and Thatchers, let's give this place a shot.'. Â And that's the last time I'll mention them all in the same sentence again.
So it's a slow Monday night and the place us fairly empty...not sure if it was the night or the place, but the place was nice enough. The hostess seemed to have trouble figuring out where to seat us (why I can't imagine since only two tables were being used), and then once we were seated it took about five minutes for the waiter to come ask us for our drinks. He was nice enough, but not overly enthused. Â Not awful, but there were 3 tables being used and another waitress was working one of them...it's not like he was overworked.
Anyway, once our drinks came the guy took our orders-I ordered a cup of onion au gratin soup and the Dublin burger (1/2 pound burger with Irish Cheddar and mushrooms and for another $1.50 I got lettuce, a tomato slice and maybe 15 fries) and my two kids order penne with vodka sauce and grilled chicken.
Let me start by saying that my burger was pretty good...it needed a little salt, which is fine, but it was good. The extra I paid for fries was ridiculous as almost every decent place includes fries with the price...which now shot to $11. Â I can't believe it started at 1/2 a pound, but for arguments sake we'll say it did. This was in no way an $11 meal. Nope, no way. Again, tasted pretty good, but for $11 I don't want pretty good, I want to be wow'd.
My cup of soup was very tasty, but, and I say this with scary hesitation, there was actually too much cheese (gasp! Jaws drop, babies cry...did he really say that?!?).
Here's my other problem with this meal. Both my kids ordered the penne vodka, one if their favorite meals-probably had it at 10 different places-always a nice pink creamy sauce with nice slices of grilled chicken. Â Now, if you read that again you'll notice that I don't mention peas. Maybe I'm taking my kids out to the odd places in NJ and NY but I've never, ever, seen penne vodka with peas (little disgusting green balls of ick). Â I don't want to be an ass, but if you're a waiter and two kids order penne vodka, you HAVE to know that A) most places don't serve it with peas and B) most kids hate peas. Â Why the hell wouldn't you mention the friggin' peas?!?! Â You should have seen their faces when their food came. Â All this pea talk aside, the vodka sauce wasn't what I've come to expect from a vodka sauce, and the kids didn't like it. Â The chicken was a chopped up mess-no tender, tasty slices just chopped up chunks with little flavor of their own. Overall their meals weren't good. Â
I started this review with a three star rating in mind, then thought a two. I mean I have had better-better soup, better burgers (especially for the price), better penne vodka, and better service, but I don't like ot hammer a place over one meal unless it is truly awful...and this wasn't awful so I'll grudgingly give them three stars...this is clearly a case of needed a half-star system as it really deserves 2.5 rather than three...
I can't really comment on the interior because we sat in the outside porch area, but from walking through, it's very "irish pub". Â Came for lunch on a Sunday and I was not impressed. Â I wasn't too hungry so I ordered a small bowl of chili. Â Huge mistake. Â It was like eating a bowl of gooey mess, the texture was like elmer's glue. Â Salty to high heaven. Â I would have been better off with Wendy's chili. Â Would come back for drinks, def. not food.
Review Source:Potential for greatness goes right out the window for this place. I get the whole "authentic Irish pub feel" but it lacked so many things.
-- Guinness pour was horrible. I had 2 hoping they would make up for it the second time...um, yeah, no.
-- Food, oh my God it was bad. I had the blackened bleu burger. Â They of course have it on the menu as "Mongey's Famous 1/2 LB. Burgers"...who the heck is Mongey and what makes them famous? The burger meat was dry as the Sahara although I ordered it medium. It was coated...no wait...drenched in this Cajun spice. It was near inedible! And for $2 more you get literally about 5 french fries, a piece of lettuce and a sliver of tomato. I kid you not. My friend had the chicken sandwich which unfortunately today he is paying for due to a bout of possible food poisoning.
-- Prices are not reasonable. 2 Sandwiches and 2 beers each and it was $50. If it tasted good then it would be worth it...
-- Service. Our poor waitress was overwhelmed as the place was busy. The food took a long time to arrive and our drink orders about the same (although the second round came out quicker). The waitress was nice and was at the mercy of a slow bar and cook.
-- Atmosphere. Avg age was 50. Predominantly male. Not a good place for a young crowd to hang out. It's a rather small bar area. Couple of TV's.
I know Pubs aren't known for their food but I haven't had a bad meal like this in a while. I would only return for a quick drink before going out elsewhere. There are so many other better options than this place. It's a shame. I was hoping for more.
Defiantly will not go back here. Â The food was terrible! Â I had the worst chicken Caesar salad ever! Â How can you screw this up? Â The roman lettuce looked very old and not good quality. Â Not much dressing as it was all dumped in the middle. Â We got a burger for my daughter and I felt bad for her, as she is loosing her front tooth and the burger looked like a hockey puck!
We also order some Irish coffee's and thought that would be HOT, but no. Â They were on the cool side. Â At least they can't screw up getting me a beer. Â Oh wait I asked for a Killian's Irish Red at an Irish bar and wouldn't you know it...nope so I had to settle for a Harp.
During our last week in Morristown, our attending doctor took me and the other students out for drinks. His place of choice is Dublin Pubyour - standard Irish bar & restaurant, which I actually like and will take most days over a rip-off, fancy NYC bar or lounge. The décor is what you'd expect, lots of wooden furniture, with a sit down side and more of a bar hangout side with high tables. We actually came here on Halloween and they (and other Morristown establishments) had large bowls of candy for trick or treaters - at a bar, either cute or creepy.
Food here is slightly above average for standard bar fare. I liked the buffalo chicken wings and boneless wings (but I'm usually biased in favor of these), Jalapeno Poppers (not too spicy if you're afraid), and the Bloomin' Dublin Rose (seriously, who doesn't have a version of the awesome blossom these days?!). The selection of beer here is pretty average, with all your bar standards, and I'm about to contradict myself by saying that the availability of bars with delicious craft beers in NYC Â has spoiled me, and I don't really enjoy most of the old standards anymore, but the Sam and Guiness still hit the spot.
Our waitress, dressed in a child-size batman outfit, was pretty sassy, but in a cute, friendly, not surly way. She was pretty attentive to when we wanted to get more drinks or food. The place and bathroom were pretty clean. If you need a spot for a simple, no frills beer to hang out with buddies, Dublin Pub does just fine.
Always friendly service, and always the greatest beers on tap. When it comes to drinking I go to the Dublin Pub first, I'm usually there everyday. Smithwicks!! Their smithwicks on tap is excellent!! I've also tried their food and it's excellent. I know most of the people there now because I've been there so frequently!
Review Source:Dublin Pub is right next to the Mayo Theatre so we decided to have lunch there before the show. Â I ordered the cobb salad, which did not have enough bacon nor eggs, BUT it's a salad. Â The children's burger was quite delicious and it came with an ice-cream sundae. Â Overall it's ok. Â Service was good and it's near the theatre.
Review Source:I dig the Dublin pub because they have Soda Bread, solid Irish beers, and a tiny stage for live music. Â I went there on a rainy St. Patrick's Saturday and ate and drank it up, having a grand old time. During the day it's kind of kid friendly.
On St Patrick's Saturday they hooked us up with some Irishy trinkets - not that that made it more authentic, but it was still a nice gesture.
The dude's bathroom is wacky and close. I believe you cannot access the second stall if someone's in the first stall, which means you might be trapped if you're in the second and someone;'s going for a while in the first. Maybe I was just too drunk. No matter what...I felt closer to my fellow restroom users afterwards.
I had a corned beef sandwich there that was nothing to brag about, but they retain 4 stars until I try the corned beef and cabbage and am not impressed. I enjoyed my Fish and Chips one time also.
I will be back for further evaluations.
My friend was married at The Madison, so after the afternoon reception his family and friends went to the Dublin Pub for dinner. By the end of the night, we had 20+ people in the back rooms.
The service was okay. The waiter was nice and kept on top of the drink orders, but did a really poor job with the food orders.
I had the chicken sandwich without the horseradish sauce, and it was pretty good. The chicken was a bit overdone, but not by much.
For the last 3 years I have been exploring the best Irish Pubs on the eastern seaboard from Florida to New York, so when I got a chance to meet a friend halfway between his residence and mine in Morristown, I was happy to pick the Dublin Pub as our rendezvous (need less to say that the reviews from my fellow yelpers were instrumental in the decision making process).
So let me start by saying that the Guiness Pour was quite good, I wouldn't call it excellent, as I like to see the Guiness settling in front of me after the pour (that way I can tell how truly fresh the pour is), and they brought a settled Guiness to the table. My second complaint is that a good Irish pub never lets you sit without a fresh pint when you are at the end of one, and here I had to get the server's attention to ask for a second pint. In my book this alone would lose them a star, but I decided not to hold them to such exacting standards.
As for the food it was decent, I ordered the Dublin grilled chicken without the bacon and I was served a Dublin grilled chicken with bacon, I guess I will chalk it off to shoddy service. My wife got a Steak salad which was also average, clearly not worth going back for.
Finally, the service left a lot to be desired, considering we went in when it wasn't busy their lack of attention and speedy service makes them lose big.
Overall, I believe that the place was ok, not worth a second visit from me. Currently, my favorite Irish pub would still have to be The Cottage in Teaneck, NJ, go check it out.
There is a sign outside Dublin Pub stating that it is celebrating its 35th year in business so you know that a lot of people have been enjoying this place for a long time. It is the most authentic Irish pub that I have seen in this area. As soon as you get close you can hear the Irish music from inside. They have a full selection of all of the menu items that you would associate with an Irish pub.
I have eaten there 3 or 4 times now and the food has always been good. They can handle groups. I went there today with a bunch of co-workers and they put us in a back "party" room. One of my co-workers ordered the Reuben for lunch  and it was massive. It is an open-faced sandwich that literally takes up the entire plate. I had a chicken sandwich, which I enjoyed. The chicken was good and the roll was fresh.  Another co-worker ordered the fish and chips and enjoyed that as well.  They also have a good selection of beers on tap.
Another nice feature is that they have an outdoor patio.
Also, They had a live band  (playing irish music of course) when I went on a Thursday night a few months back and I belive they also have live  entertainment/bands Fri & Sat nights as well.
Love the outdoor patio, including the use of bluestone on the floor and ledges. Â Unfortunately, the service on the patio needs some improvement. Â The server clearly has too many tables to handle. Â Both times we had to work to get his attention for everything, including the check! Â The second time we were there, part of our party actually left to wait on the sidewalk while one stayed behind to settle the bill. Â Food is mostly mediocre (would agree that the fish n chips are done well), but that depends on your expectations. Â Nice selection on tap.
Review Source:this place scratches my irish crave itch much more than that grasshopper joint.
my first stop in - it was packed... and as a solo diner, i didn't feel like loitering around and waiting for a seat at the bar...
second stop in, mid afternoon, on a holiday, my seat was waiting for me. so i bellied up...
the vibe is great, the pours are generous, and the food meets the need.
i will be back for a pint, and then some...
I haven't been to the Dublin Pub in a few years but I miss it so much that I wanted to give it a shout out. Â As an aside, did I really just say "shout out"? Â What, did I get transported back to 1998?
Having lived on Perry St. for a few years the Dublin was my favorite watering hole. Â How can you not love living in a house that is within a four minute walk to a place like the Dublin Pub? Â I live in SoCal and you can't walk ANYWHERE out here.
Anyway, Dublin has all the normal beer and liquor choices. Â If you are eating, try the fish 'n chips or the Dublin Chicken sandwich. Â The Dublin Chicken rocks. Â It is grilled chicken with bacon and honey mustard on the side. Â At least it used to be!!!!
Gosh, I miss Morristown sometimes.
Truly great establishments don't need to be referred to by their full names. Â Tell someone that you are going to the Met, and they immediately know what you are talking about. Â For decades, the Dublin Pub has existed in this rarefied air in Morris County. Â Tell someone that you want to grab something at "The Pub", and they know you are talking about the Dublin.
I have been going to this place since I was 21. Â Credit the Mongey family with making constant improvements to the place. Â They add rooms, outdoor seating, and menu items each and every year. Â Even with all the improvements, the Dublin Pub excels at the staples of Irish bars: Â good beer and great pub grub. Â They have an excellent selection of beer on draft including Boddingtons. Â On my most recent visit back east to visit my parents, I stopped by the Pub to show my girlfriend what a real Irish pub was like. Â I was dismayed to learn that they no longer served John Courage on tap. Â I know that Boddingtons and Courage are Blighty beers, but they can co-exist with the Smithwicks that Jim Mongey now has on tap as well. Â
If you're hungry, do yourself a favor: order the fish and chips. Â I crave the Pub's fish and chips whenever I am away from the old stomping grounds. Â The nacho platter is also excellent.
The decor is pitch perfect with a lamppost from Dublin and an awesome wall sized photograph of a Dublin street. Â There is a jukebox in the main room that cranks out a great selection of Van Morrison tunes and Chieftains classics. Â
I miss the Dublin Pub, and I'm glad that it is still there every time I go back to Jersey.
