From the looks of things, I expected this place to seriously hit the spot. Â The ambiance was quite appealing which is what drew me in; however, for a $$$ dining establishment I expect that. Â The set up is great. Â The booths provide a lot of space and the corner table is perfect in terms of privacy and arm space. Â I hate nothing more than being squeezed elbow to elbow with other diners.
The oysters were fresh. Â I really liked the presentation of the ice block which kept the oysters chilled. Â Seriously, oysters are mother nature's doing. Â There's nothing to prepare (only shuck). Â Mignonettes are not all the difficult to throw together so for me oysters are oysters unless they aren't fresh. Â I'll give them props for the presentation.
Now to all of the disappointments. Â
Cocktails: Â We ordered the Airmail and Italian Greyhound. My drink was OK. Â Light, refreshing, but not stiff whatsoever. Â My friend's greyhound was watered down. Â I tasted some bitter from the grapefruit but that's about it. Â The drink seemed extremely diluted. Â My dinner wine was delicious, but all the bartender had to do was pour (I ordered a Cabernet).
Starters:
We began with the biscuits with ham & Beecher's cheese and an apple spread. Â It was so dry and crumbly. Â The grilled shrimp dish was disappointing too. Â They ran out of bokchoy (which was fine) and replaced it with kale, but they way over salted the kale. Â It was EXTREMELY salty! Â I love kale, but it would have been nice if she told us beforehand and not as she brought the dish out to us. Â Not to mention... the shrimp tasted frozen -- not fresh.
Entrees: Â
Fried chicken was boneless (nice) over a bed of gravy and side of mashed potatoes. Â The pork dish came with some greens and grilled potatoes. Â Both were mediocre at best.
Dessert:
The whiskey chocolate cake is supposedly their best dessert, but I found it to be dry and lacked any whiskey flavor. Â
After dinner cocktails:
The 10 year old Tawny came in a little dinky glass. Â For $10 or whatever it cost, it was not a normal size pour. Â We questioned this to our waitress and they gave us another one and didn't charge for it -- as they should have. Â On a positive note, the glass was pretty.
My mint tea was good and probably the best part of the whole meal. Â BTW, the tea was $4.50 which was way more than any of the espresso drinks they had on the menu. Â See my photo (typical Asian type tea pot, same as when what you'll see any most Asian restaurants).
Service:
The service was below satisfactory. Â We had to get the attention of another waitress for service and our waitress really didn't check on us much at all. Â
If you're just looking for oysters, this would be a great spot during happy hour at $1.50 an oyster. Â Thumbs up on the atmosphere and cool decor, but I did not find the food to match the $$$. Â I think we probably would have been happier sitting in the bar.
